  • For those who have complained to Amex about a store being listed on map but not accepting Amex, where is the appropriate channel to make my complaint? I have looked on the shop small website but there's no contact and not sure if to direct this to my bank (westpac) given this is an Amex promo. Thanks so much

    • I think there's a site called Take AMEX where you can voice your grievances

    • I've had this issue. I called the Amex customer service number but because mine is bank issued (ANZ) he advised me to make contact via Amex Connect (https://network.americanexpress.com/connect/au/en/default.ht…) and fill out a form to get my $10 credit.

But if you are just after reporting a listed business that shouldn't be you can just call 1300 736 659

Nextra Chatswood Chase doesn't take AMEX and surcharge $0.30 for all opal credit card top ups

Wiki failed. Comment failed from previous thread

    • Thanks for the update. That's been removed.

      • +1

Yeah I went and asked for $20 Opal top up thought they take AMEX. Then when I was about to pay I couldn't. Ended up spend $20 on cash…. I was relying on the comments here..

  • Anyone know if Hakataya Ramen Indooroopilly is included?? Every other Hakataya store is listed but not indro! The indro store also has the official shop small sticker in the store, but it could be from ages ago. Weird..

I went there in Sept promo and got the credit from Amex.

  • So QLD'ers where are the places to top up Go Card and receive cashback in Brisbane.
I topped up at EZYMART KING GEORGE Sqaure, 131 Margaret St, Brisbane City QLD 4000. It is located inside the King George square and you have to go down a level to access it.
So, where are the other places.
    Cheers for sharing.

Try the list on the wiki.

I topped up at EZYMART KING GEORGE Sqaure, 131 Margaret St, Brisbane City QLD 4000

      Any fees?

      • No fees.
        They also accept android pay

    • There's two Nextras at Garden City (one on the top floor, one on the bottom floor) that you can do Go Card top ups on, did it successfully this morning.

  • Went 6 places today, actually topped up at 4 places for 2 cards, 4 confirmation for 1 card, 2 confirmation for another card. Emails came with a few hours delay.

1.Village Convenience Store, $2 surcharge, the guy told me AMEX asked them to do so.
    2.CONVENIENCE AT THE COVE, 3% = 0.6 surcharge today.
3.Neutral Bay Wycombe,$1 surcharge, signature and another format of ID required.
    4.Neutral Bay Newsagency $1 surcharge
    5.Nextra Chatswood Westfield, $1 surcharge
6.Nextra Chatswood Chanse, didn't accept AMEX

Compared thydzik's list with Myki's Retailer Map and found Lucky Day Lotto (185 Brunswick St). 3% surcharge (e.g. 60c surcharge for $20 top up).

That makes 3 (Lucky Day, Cigarette Express Convenience, Foodworks) within a 5 minute walk so I reckon Brunswick St is the way to go to get your Myki topups.

  • Merged from Any petrol pump around Sydney participating in Shop Small?

    Hi,

Is there any gas station participating in Shop Small around eastern or western suburbs? Will be great to take advantage of this promotion whilst supporting small business as well.

    • Apparently no. Not on list. Share if you find otherwise

  • This doesn't work if I make a purchase before I register my card?

    • You have to register your card first before you buy

  • Anyone get confirmation emails yesterday? We went to 6 shop small places and 20 hours later, still no email

    • Did you tap your card or insert your card? Also, some shops don't send e-mails like Oxford St Newsagency but you still get the credit

      • I inserted card….no one I've been to seems to accept payWave Amex transactions.

        • They probably don't send e-mails then. If you haven't received your credit by Thursday then might need to chase up on it …

    • I went to St Malo's Bakery in Crows Nest - no emails received. In the past emails have always been received from them within a few minutes.

      • Credits received today despite lack of emails.

      • Oh they take Amex now. Last year's Shop Small they didn't, even though they were on the map.

  • I have 2 nab cards, different card number, both registered for shop small. Spent $20+ at the same place, email came through for one card instantly, credit followed 2 days later. However, no email or credit for the other card, strange…

    • At one of the stores, I received an email instantly and credit 2 days later for one card but not the other and the credit came through 3 days later on the one I didn't receive an email for:)

Just wanted to add a correction for one Opal top up - The Darling Harbour View Convenience address is actually Suite 24, 5A Erskine St, NOT the 24 Erskine St per the Wiki list (just Google "Darling Harbour View Convenience Store"). Went there yesterday and had to walk further down the road to find it as map was wrong.

Also, was not charged any surcharge for Opal top up, paid $20 only!

    • Did u receive any email confirmation from Amex?

      • Yep
"Thanks for supporting a small business in your community by shopping small at DARLING HARBOUR VIEW PTY LTD"

    • Thanks, that's fixed now.

$20, + 50c surcharge to all non-cash non-eftpos top ups, plus another 1.5% for Amex
        $20.50 * 1.015 = $20.8075, rounded up to $20.81 on the system.
Still cheaper than the $1 or $2 shops in the city.

        • $20, + 50c surcharge to all non-cash non-eftpos top ups, plus another 1.5% for Amex

Isn't Amex transaction considered eftpos though?

        • +1

@virhlpool: No. EFTPOS is Cheque or Savings.

    • Bondi Junction EzyMart 26 Bronte Rd is around the corner from Bondi Junction EzyMart 237 Oxford St. Did you miss it or aren't they taking Amex for Opal this time around? They're still currently listed on the Shop Small map.

    • Bondi Westfield has two newsagents. News Newsagency on level 3 and News King on level 1. News Newsagency is listed on the SS map while News King isn't.

      • They don't necessarily have to be on the map to get the credit.

  • Not getting an email after spending shop small.

I used to get the email. Do do you guys get or not get the email

    • No email but received all credits a few days later

  • Well i just had my first bad experience with this promotion. Went to a seafood joint to buy some fish which is shown on the shop small map… go to pay, machine declines card and they say they do not accept amex and its nothing new. Booooo :(

    • It happens, same for me for one place over the weekend. AMEX is usually pretty good at still giving you the credit if you contact them and explain.

      • +1

Agree, I also had my first experience over the weekend that wouldn't accept AMEX. Wrote to AMEX and attached a copy of receipt and have received confirmation they will still be crediting me.

        • how did your write to them ? via email stating your card number ?

          thanks

        • @TheStahh: I logged into AMEX connect, then under contact us, just fill in the form and attach a copy of your receipt.
          Good luck!

525 George St City Convenience had a $1 sign but asked me for $2. I walked out.
139 Pitt St City Convenience also $2 now.
770 George St Ezymart - $3 so I walked out. 15% surcharge is straight up gouging.
Good on Wu's Pharmacy for staying at 50c.

    • 139 Pitt St City Convenience also $2 now.

Do you mean 197 Pitt or 1/379-383 Pitt St? There doesn't appear to be a CC at 139 Pitt.

      • Sorry, it was CC at 1/379-383 Pitt St (street corner)

  • Malvern Authorised Newsagency (114 Glenferrie Road) accepts Amex for Myki recharges.
    3% surcharge.

  • 1/525 George St and 1 Castlereagh Street (Both City Convenience) not receiving email. They don't appear on the small shop map either

  • Brisbane Go Card Recharge Update:
City News & Creek St News: No longer accept Amex for go card recharge :(

    • Thanks, saved me a trip to City News. Wasn't planning to try Creek St News as it's not listed on the map.

    • Thanks for letting us know

    • +1

      Never say never!

I managed to use multiple cards at Creek St News on the 8th November (separate $20 transactions), so depends on who you get at the counter perhaps?
The lady at City News said no Amex but put it through one last time.. previously there was a different person at the counter who just put through Amex no problem..

Benefit of George Street they are much friendlier and you can just tap to pay whereas City and Creek require a PIN.

      • Last time I went to Creek St News, i was served by a guy.
In City News, it was a lady.

I will give it one more try when I see the person changed :P
        Thanks :D

    • Creek St News and Post Office Square News are no longer on the map, i called amex today to confirm and they are definitely not part of shop small right now.

      • hmm.. hang on, so how does that work when I purchased from them < 15/Nov when they WERE listed on the Amex map?

I've checked my statements and all the other Shop Small Credits have come through except for Creek St News purchases.. appreciate any guidance on this.

        • not sure sorry, if it's been a while and no statement credit yet i'd probably give amex a call and tell them that when you bought from there they were on the map at the time :)

        • +2

@yupyup: thanks, managed to call Amex who honoured their card-issued $10 credit, but as for the ANZ-issued Amex purchases, I was advised to call them separately, due to Amex not having access to see the ANZ transactions and credits applied to the account.

Will be interesting to see if ANZ have the same level of Shop Small Access regarding this merchant being 'active' and since de-listing from Shop Small.. will keep readers posted.

        • @TrailerTrash:
Amex Connect are trying to give me the flick, stating that the merchant was not part of Novembers Shop Small which is BS..

Am going to try and escalate otherwise will call Amex to cancel card.. not worth the effort.

        • +2

          @TrailerTrash:

after i realised people could 'pull out' of shop small it made the whole thing alot more of a drag, found myself having to check just before purchases using that stupid map on my phone all the time to see if the merchant was still participating. a bunch of times they weren't on the map, but made the purchase anyway and got the credit! but sometimes they really have pulled out…

i reckon if merchant is in, they should be in til the end, otherwise it just puts unnecessary hassle and stress onto cardholders to be checking all the time!

hope you get your credit :)

        • @yupyup:
          Thanks. Agree 100%.
Still waiting for a response from Amex Connect Management.

    • just got back from City News, who are on the map - there was a youngish brunette girl serving (not the red haired older lady), i went up to use android pay, didnt go through straight away and needed signature, by the time she knew i was using amex she felt like she had to let me use the card, so got to use my amex card! Also note there is now a sign on the counter saying something like "AMERICAN EXPRESS NO LONGER ACCEPTED FOR GO CARD, GOLD LOTTO…etc", so it's their official position not to use amex for go card

ymmv, but if you ask for go card top-up and use android pay (they can't see what card you are using), you might get away with 1 amex transaction ;)

  • Merged from AmEx Shop Small - Selby and Other Webshops

I noticed that a purchase at Selby.com.au with my Amex triggered a $10 shop small credit. Nice since they they've got good, cheap TV mounting brackets - also, since their prices include shipping I ended up purchasing 2 items in seperate transactions, so $20 for me!

Any other good webshops that offer reasonable/free shipping that you guys have received a Shop Small credit for?

    • But the T&C states "with no more than one credit per participating small business"?? Or you used 2 different cards?

      • +1

        2 cards indeed.

  • Shopped at my shop small shop today, and didn't receive any email. Will have to wait for the credit to go thru (if it does at all)

  • ANZ card is taking ages to get credit.

  • Just a heads up, CITY MART 525 PTY LTD (525 George St City convenience) does not automatically give $10 cashback. You have to email AMEX and they credit $10 manually.

    • Hi Sharp, how do you email AMEX? thanks

      • +1

Log in to your online account then on the top right corner click "Contact Us" then you'll see "Email American Express" link on the right.

This will open the "Secure Message Centre" where you can send and receive secure messages to/from Amex.

P.S This is for Amex issued cards, no idea about bank issued cards.

    • How do you know its them?

I only have 1 store left that will credit me, I have no idea which one though. Might be this.

      • On amex online account, I can see which store each credit belongs to.

  • Staff at 289 sussex st is so rude.

    • what happened? i went there yesterday and the guy was alright, got charged $1 surcharge but did not get an email from Amex

      • I asked him not to do paypass. He got pissed off and threw Opal and credit card on the table after processing the transaction.

        • hmmmm weird

        • Why not paypass? I think that gets confirmed quicker, instant emails conf for me

        • @Baghern: I never receive email so I prefer not using it.

        • @Tipu:

To clarify - I have CBA and ANZ, I didn't receive any confirmation forANZ but received them immediately for CBA AMEX paypass

  • NSW Convenience Store
    Parramatta
    $1 surcharge
    Signature required

    Received email straight away.

    • Address? there're two in Parra. Is it on church st or macquarie st?

      • Macquarie St

  • Just curious, if I have a supplementary card with same number, but different name, am i able to "double dip"?

    • +2

No. Must have different numbers to 'double dip'.

      • Thanks. If that's the case, it seems Westpac is issuing supp cards with same numbers.

        • +1

          yesss!!

I couldn't register my WBC Supp even though it's in a different name

  • +3

    I did a bit of OPAL harvesting yesterday and can confirm that;

Wu's Pharmacy - still 50c surcharge and very polite service.
Oxford St Newsagency - still 50c surcharge and very efficient.
Ezymart at 20 King St - still $1 surcharge.

  • +1

Did Go Card topups at Ezymart King George Square and George St News this morning using a CBA-issued card. No surcharge, contactless payments at both. Got email notification for the Ezymart payment straight away; no email received fro the George St News payment - though I don't yet see that transaction in my card's history.

    • +1

Further Go Card topups done on 9/11 at

      • Hao & Han - got email straight away
      • Post Office Square News - no email
      • and Nextra Chermside on 10/11 - got email straight away

No surcharge or any other issues at all 3.

      • Is Hao & Han the golden casket next to flight centre? They don't take Amex when I tried today. I don't think Post office square works as it's not on the map.

        • haha beat me to it. can also confirm Hao & Han (next to flight centre) definitely don't accept amex at the moment. i asked the lady at the counter why - it's because they changed eftpos systems (to NAB?) and haven't set up amex on it yet (apparently).

also i just confirmed Post office square is no longer part of shop small at the moment (called amex). see the wiki for more details :)

        • @yupyup: Hmm… could've sworn PO Square News was on the map when I checked earlier this month and added it to the wiki. I didn't get an email after spending there on 9/11, and haven't gotten a cash back for it so perhaps it was removed some time after I checked.

As for Hao and Han, they definitely accepted Amex on 9/11 and I have already gotten the cash back for it.
