        • Yes it's a convenience shop. They are across each other you can't miss it. I don't think I received emails but I received the cashback.

I stopped watching out for emails they are not reliable.

        • @Sharp: Thanks. mate.

    • B&J now charge $1.50

      • and Rawson charged me $1.00 this time YMMV

    • Thanks mate.

Just a question, why is the Nextra Chase the only entry in the wiki without an associated comment?

      • Not sure, probably user error. :) I'll see if I can track down the original comment from September.

201 sussex street Darling park $0.4

22 Market Street $1, City Conv Store

I spoke to the guy in Market street, he said he had someone come in with 20 cards…

Will hit the Oxford trio of, Connaught, Oxford St and 88 next time
    Thanks to Neil's updates.

    • TWENTY CARDS?! O_O

    • +1

Good on 201 Sussex Street Darling park for not raising the surcharge.

      • +1

        And keeping it low!

    • 22 Market St not worked for me.
It's showing as "MARKET TRADING PTY LTD SYDNEY" in the statement.

  • Ok so that map by Thydzik is pretty fantastic.
Has this allowed us to discover any more Myki stuff? I was discussing this on Page 2 with someone. Do we still have a pretty dismal Myki selection in the CBD / close surrounding suburbs?

EDIT: you Sydneysiders are going gangbusters on the Opal cards :( so lucky.

  • +7

I was so incensed by some merchants openly telling me they increased their surcharge because of this campaign that I called Amex to report them for profiteering and I registered on OzBargain to report back.

Amex seemed genuinely shocked that merchants were charging 5%, let alone 10%+. They asked me to provide names and addresses of each of these merchants so they could take action.

They also encouraged me to report further examples of excessive surcharging to www.takeamex.com.au

If enough of us report dodgy merchants to that link, we may be able to get something done.

    • +6

I went to small grocery shop and they wanted to charge me 30% for Amex. Report to ACCC in addition to Amex.

    • +1

Thanks, reported Ezymart 770 George St Haymarket.

      • +1

        me too, also Rawson place.

    • i think all amex will do is remove them from the map. most small business owners hate amex anyway…

      • The credit card industry has been one of the best marketed financial items.

Really most of us can pay with debit no problems. The majority of people pay it all off within the first month.

But by marketing to businesses that their card brings in customers, they've compelled them to accept it, at the same time taking a 1-3% clip…

On the otherside by pushing points, they've convinced most of us to use credit cards when I debit card would of been fine.

With so many users now, companies feel compelled to accept credit cards.

Logically all business should put a surcharge on all credit cards…

Kinda like how a lot of online payments are done now, free debit .4% visa/master card, amex not accepted or charged extra

    • Sounds good in theory, but plan may back fire and next year no more opal/myki recharges

  • Does anyone know what happens if you leave $250 unused on an Opal card for a long time. Does it just stay there? Can you extract it to a bank account by choice?

    • you need to submit a refund form.

    • +1

expire after 8 years from date of top up. or yeah refund form and pray for them credit money back to you.

I submitted a travel ten paper tickets refund form since early august. Still no money back today!

      • +1

leebungfei, I submitted 2 travel ten paper tickets for refund as well in August. As of today, still no refund of the money. I didn't keep a copy of the claim form and the travel ten tickets, so I cannot validate my claim :(

        • Me too, I submitted back in August/September. Still no acknowledgement.

    • If you've picked up a new card, make sure you tap it on and off at least once, within 6weeks? Or it will be refunded.

Which sounds like an interesting loophole

      • I have got Opal while back on other Amex dral and did notnuse it for at least 3 months the fund still there and not get refunded.

  • I went to Millennium Convenience Store on 1/11 they charged me a $1 surcharge, went again a few minutes ago and charged $2, when i questioned it saying that i was charged $1 a few days ago, the guy said that $1 was a mistake. Not happy! He even said that they dont make money from amex!

    • that's pretty lousy.

Pretty sure Amex only charges 1.95%. $1 is just money grabbing.

      • I believe all credit cards charge a base value as well, AMEX I assume would charge more.

I have to think that there's more to it than we know, than what the Small businesses were told.

I would of thought $1 surcharge whould cover the AMEX charge, and they get what ever they get normally from Opal.

But the fact there are some who are adamantly going no AMEX at all, makes it feel pretty suss.

Maybe some people are putting in more than $20…. $50 would lose them money on a $1 surcharge

The one near DJs and Coco Noir! Don't do what I did and recharge at the QVB one (the one in your post) opposite Town Hall Station gates. Major derp moment there ($2 surcharge if anyone wants to know) and no $10 back.

It's confusing because of the four Lucky Charm stores in the immediate vicinity, only two are Shop Small participants.

    Got 2 Myki recharges today:

    • Foodworks (Listed as GERTRUDE ST MINI MART), 169 Gertrude St, Fitzroy. No surcharge, guy was happy to do 2 cards.
    • Cigarette Express Convenience (Listed as YE MAO PTY LTD), 109 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. 25c surcharge

Got an email immediately for Foodworks. The 2nd store just happened to walk by and saw Myki + Shop Small Sign. Didn't get an email for that one but it's on the map.

  • can anyone confirm this as well?

SydneySwan 2 hours 57 min ago new

I was charged $1 today and I recharged OPAL using 3 cards. My son has a friend who works there and he confirms that the Amex surcharge is 5%.

Would explain why some stores have said no altogether

    • It's 5% for that particular store because that store charged a cheaper surcharge to me compared to everyone else who went there.

  • multiple contactless purchases at Amcal, got the confirmation emails straight away.

    • With the same card at different Amcals?

      • different cards, same Amcal.

going to go to another Amcal this weekend.

I find that is the best value for us in WA.

    • I've made multiple purchases of Baby formula on special for $20.99 at various pharmacies across Perth using my 3 Amex cards. Such a great offer by Amex. Wont need to buy any more for a few months lol!

    • 19-21 Hunter is such a rip

  • I've added a few potential Go-card topup locations to the wiki. Basically cross checked between the list of go card retailers and the Amex map, for areas near where I frequent. They're as yet unconfirmed/untested.

    • +1

I can confirm that at least with one business (my father in law's music shop - now closed down). We tried putting two transactions through but it definitely knows you've spent on that business already. Only 1 cashback… oh well. It cost something like 40c to try…

  • +3

    Did the Oxford run,

Connaught NewsAgency, OXford St Newsagency and the 888 Tobacco/King of the Pack.

50c surcharge for the first 2 and 20c/1% surcharge for the 3rd.

Glad I didn't do these 3 first, really made me feel guilty, they come across as old school "mum and pop" stores…. especially 888…a little old asian lady.

I don't see how 50c or 1% is covering the extra charges.

Going to be in a shock when they see the bill.

I'm sure they were all sold the idea that people will come in and buy high profit items, which they would never of had if it wasn't for AMEX, instead its Opal runners…

If AMEX runs this again, think I'll just hit places that charges $1

    • I felt sorry for her too. I hope she knows something we don't.

      • I assume its a son's store or something, doesn't come across as the owner.

Still it doesnt look like a profit machine of a store

        • +1

I think they've got a daughter but I have not seen her for a long time. They are lovely people (originally from Vietnam I believe). The older man appears to be in charge. The old lady knew what she was doing and got it done quite fast. A lot of business in Oxford Square closed down but they have been there forever so the business must not be too bad. I used to buy a lot there when Marlboro Gold was like $8 ($23 now). I quit smoking but bought a pack after topping up to support them. Can resell it to a friend who will be happy to pay $13 or $14 a pack.

I went to Connaught as well and asked the Asian girl if she was sick of doing this. She said 'YES! Too many people' (and she looked very serious) lololol

The old man at Oxford St Newsagency seemed to get used to Opal runners.

        • @Fishy:

Small business like that I assume either own their spot or are on some kinda fixed cheap lease

    • if it wasn't profitable for a business they would've stopped it many shop smalls ago. these newsagents have been there from the start.

      • +1

It feels like a lot didn't know, based on changes within 1-2 days of the month… ie no amex or increased surcharge

        • the owners of the business need to sign up for shop small.

        • +2

          @lamprey:

Yeah I get that perspective, if thats true a lot of them quickly changed their minds afterwards.

Either way I'm not trying to tell people what to do, just speculating background and how I would take advantage of something like this in future.

Used 19/20 for 2 cards… saving last one for a big lunch

Teasing myself to get the supplementary cards though

    • The new "Opal run"…

  • Does anybody know whether merchants are wearing part of the Shop Small costs this time around? I had somebody claiming that this year it was a 50/50 deal… Amex pays $5 and Merchant wears $5…

    • +1

I call BS on that. No way!

      • I don't believe it either, hence was interested to see if anybody could shed more light either way.

    • +3

most doesn't even know they are part of it.

always confused when splitting it into multi $20 lots

      • Which is why I don't believe what some people are claiming that the promotion is at half commission for AMEX.

Amex would make sure their clients knew.

They're finding out at the end of the day… wtf all these amex charges

  • Has anyone had any success doing the rounds on Myki in Melbourne city?
The Wiki page only seem to have success in suburbs.

  • Just topped up myki at The Summit. Two friendly ladies. Two Amex no problems.

    • The one at Southbank?

      • Yes

  • Do the Bay Mini Mart, Kiribilli take Amex for Opal? They're listed on both the Shop Small map & at http://www.retailers.opal.com.au/

    • Why don't you try it and tell us?

      • +1

It's well out of my way but if it's under $1 surcharge I'd make a journey on a Sunday.

Using opal to top up opal to use opal for.

        • Well no one will know unless you tell us. And guess what tomorrow is? ;)

    • Have a look on the official list - they might be listed there. If they are then you can assume they do and if they don't, you report them to AMEX and ask AMEX for credit because they were listed.

    • Can confirm it works.

  • I need a way to filter out opal topups (which I dont use) so I can see what other useful things I could be using my cards for :)

  • For Opal, do you need to spend just $20 total (including surcharge), or $20 before surcharge?
    Thanks.

    • +1

you can't recharge opal for $19 etc , has to be $20. so $20 plus fee.

  • Is there a number you can call if the Shop Small credits don't appear? My Amex is issued by CBA

    • AMex says 3-5 days

Though i notice paypass payments got the credit in 24hrs

  • Merged from Help with Shopsmall & Palace Cinemas Query

    Hi all

I am trying to leverage the Shopsmall promotion by buying an annual Movie Club membership with and at the same time taking advantage of a promotion code.

Here's what I am trying to do. If I can get this to work it will be great value.

First, normal annual movie club memberships cost $19 (1 year) and $32 (two years). There is a promotional code StandardStyle19 which I found here.

    http://www.palaceshop.com.au/palace-movie-club-membership-vi…

It appears to work no matter which palace cinema you are a member of.

Now on the Shopsmall map I saw

    PALACE CINEMA
    231 WHITEHORSE ROAD , BALWYN VICTORIA 3103

It appears that the head office is in South Yarra.

When I try and sign up for the movie club at

    http://www.palaceshop.com.au/categories/Movie-Club/

I can get the $13 discount using the code but there is no Amex option. I can however pay by Paypal which can be hooked up to one of my Amex cards.

If I pay using Paypal in this way will I still get the Amex $10 promotion rebate?

    cheers Peter

    • +2

      No

    • You have to go into the cinema to pay with Amex. I am sure they would take a payment for a movie club membership not so sure about the promo codes.

  • +1

I just topped up my Myki at Victoria Harbour Pharmacy. I know the wiki says only 1 Amex per person, but I thought I'd try it out anyway. I'm glad I did.

The last time I went there, each transaction was put through separately and it took quite a long time. After me, I heard from Ozbargainers that they put up a sign saying 1 Amex per person. But when I got there this afternoon, the lady at the counter seemed unsurprised by my request. She knew what to do and even asked me how many lots of $20 I wanted. I had 10 cards, so she put $200 on my Myki and then split it among my cards. The whole process took like a minute. No surcharge, no limit of cards.

    • Where do you get supplementary cards?

I've looked at my CBA and ANZ online account and there is no option for supplementary, only additional which means same card number

      • I don't have any CBA cards (they're the only bank I refuse to deal with), but I do have ANZ cards. I've only gotten a supplementary card for one of them, and I applied for it when I applied for the card. They definitely have different numbers.

  • Anyone have issues with getting the cashback? There seems to be some missing credits on some cards and none at all on other cards. It's been 4 days since Opal Top ups.

    • Looks like the City Convenience at 1 Castlereagh St isn't part of the Shop Small scheme anymore - I put $20 on my Opal but have received no automated email from Amex confirming the statement credit. I can confirm that the Ezymart at 52 Martin Place went through though

      • +3

Not all transactions/cards get automated emails. Best to wait a few days and see if the credit comes through.

        • Can confirm that the statement credit went through this morning. It's a bit weird since all other retailers' credit came through within a matter of hours, but hey, so long as I get the cashback I'm not fussed exactly when it hits my statement!

      • I notice my CBA Amex gets almost all the notification… but my ANZ don't… I believe thats to do with the CBA being the only one that has the technology to get confirmation sooner

    • why is sydney so baised to surcharges on top ups when melbourne isn't???

      • Probably the amount of people using this for opal is significantly higher…

Might not notice the cost on a few transaction… on a dozen..100s…

  • I went to Grocery Zone at 1/44 Park St Sydney today, it is still a $1 surcharge but they said that another item must be purchased in the shop to use AMEX. Didn't bother topping up my opal there.

    • I did mine there and I didn't buy anything else.. I saw the sign there though.. Maybe it depends on the person behind the counter

I tried a few places to get on the deal. Some worked, some do not accept AMEX even though they on the list. I suspect Amex uses this deal to get us the people to go in to small businesses so that the the b. says to themselves, 'Hey maybe I'd better start taking Amex seeing as so many people keep walking out".

    • For sure, its why credit cards are so popular… the majority of us could easily use debit but we use credit because we get points… businesses are scared that they may lose a significant % of customers if thy don't allow it.

Amex pushes this another step forward.

I'm sure it was sold to them as hey they'll come in a buy something that you will make a 50% markup on…we'll just take a tiny 3%…. ignoring the opal factor

Imagine 200 actual purchases were made rather than 200 opal users…
