Good price if you like their service, I will never use optus again after my plan end.

    • Is Vodafone better or not?

      • +1

it's better for me with Vodafone in Gold Coast but in Sydney I prefer Optus

        • +1

Yeah Voda seems to be great in SE QLD but I drove down to Coffs Harbor on the long weekend and Vodafone was frustratingly useless.
First time I've regretted Vodafone in ~3 years

        • @theguyrules: I live in Coffs and Optus isn't much better, had their sims for my kids but have swapped to all Telstra now.

        • +4

I had to re-read your username several times

    • Did you check the Optus coverage in your area before signing up?

      • +2

I signed up for this the last time it was offered, switching from Telstra. Its good value, with all you can eat calls and messaging, but the data network isnt quite as good as Telstra - sometimes the network would just hang, only to come back 30 seconds later. It had nothing to do with coverage as such, i was in a 4G network area the whole time.

    • +1

Yeah, they're horrible, planning to cancel this today

      • +2

Optus is horrible. I bought some prepaid sims from 7/11 and coles. I cant activate a single sim now, they refused to swap for new ones and their broadband is good but they make it so hard to set up a direct debit so they can charge more fees

  • Signed up last week to the OPTUS $50 15GB per month deal. Using %10 student discount I will end up paying $45 (if all goes well).

    • I am on this plan paying $36 via education discount and have not come close to 10gb yet. I couldn't justify the extra $9 for 5gb especially since they don't do data share sims complementary anymore. Guess it depends on your data requirements :)

My daughter likes to deplete my data watching Peppa Pig… I had no other choice lol!

          @ShamelessBargains:
If you can plan ahead try adding ss to the start of the youtube url (eg www.ssyoutube.com…..) thank me later ;)

        • @darkb: what does that do? Can't add that on the app though?

Can do in any browser (PC, android, not sure about iOS)
It let's you download it to your computer/device for later viewing ie. save mobile data

        • @darkb: interesting, thanks for the tip.

      • By changing plans, would I lose my two data share sims getting data from this plan?

Virgin also have a $40 10GB plan, Unlimited Calls, and includes data free streaming on Google Play, iHeart Radio, Pandora and Spotify music apps, Data Rollover, the benefit is Virgin's is Month to Month as opposed to this Optus 12 month contract plan.

    • Is it not $50 plan for 10Gb? $40 comes with 7Gb data. link

      • +3

No its 10GB for $40 via a the velocity page and month to month.

        • Link please?

        • Pretty sure that deal expired

        • @ozmu:

It looks like you need to be a Velocity member to get the 3 + 7Gb deal. Although joining Velocity appears to be free, so should still be available.

        • @carkell:

Still available. Add it to your cart and checkout.

And it doesn't ask for your Velocity number either though if it does down the track it is free to join.

        • +1

@carkell: Thanks for that. Deal extended to 19/10/2016 apparently

        • @ozmu:

Time for someone to relist it here :)

  • does this sim qualify for Optus EPL coverage?

    • Nope

      • hmm it's a no from me then

        • It's eligible, but you've missed the free EPL offer.. Have to spend at least $85p/m to get it included now

        • +1

          @roadeh:
Ahhh yeah, I refused at the time to bow down to them, was pretty pissed off at the time. Would have preferred if they left it with Fox. Coverage was better anyway

  • Switched from my $135/m Telstra plan (unltd calls, 4GB data) to this optus one 2 months ago. So far so good. It's what I expected. In major locations in Sydney, eg CBD, Parra CBD, Liverpool CBD, etc no issues. It is not as fast consistently as Telstra in areas outside of major suburban hubs.

  • Very tempted to switch from my Telstra $40/mth with 7.5GB…

Need to get a test sim to see how well the Optus signal is in my area though, last I used them, it was horrible.

  • +1

Not a published offer, but if you chat with Telstra LiveChat they can give existing customers a discount on the BYO Large plan. Published as $70 per month, but they can give very generous discounts. Just link them the deal and you should have no issues getting a price match.

    • Agree with this - able to help friend (Telstra customer- out of contract) yesterday switch to Telstra L plan with $20 discount and 2 GB bonus data - ie $50 for unlimited T&T and 12 GB data. Used this Optus deal as bargaining chip

      • +1

Really? That's a great deal coming from telstra. Well done.

    • I went onto Telstra live chat disconnections after reading whirlpool, and after using this Optus deal as leverage, they matched it for me for $40 as well.

      • +1

What about international calls with Telstra?

        • I didn't ask for any as I have no need. They might give you a credit for an international calling pack if you asked though?

      • They won't do it for me!

        • The price matching that is

        • @Bargearse: If the rep that you get isn't playing ball, you should ask for the retention team. Unless you already tried that?

        • @timdee: reread your comment, only for existing customers, im still with optus and just resigned up my plan for $40. I've been happy with the service and dont have to go through changing providers. Ill let a friend know who is keen on sticking with telstra for country use. Thanks.

        • @Bargearse: Oh no worries mate, all the best.

Note, international minutes don't cover all countries. Had a run in with customer service over a $50 call to denmark…

Just my experience with my first month of Optus data sharing.
Their postpaid data metering system is horrible. I had 3 accounts that shares data. $40 10GB plan, $10 1.5GB data plan and $0 month to month plan. My Optus app, which is supposed to show you metered data takes around 24 hours to show correct metering and seems to take more in some cases.
They send you text and e-mails telling you % of the data used. However these were not accurate and were sent twice in some cases. I suspect they had problems combining the data pool and this might get better after the first month.
Also the data metered before expiry of the month was different from(more than) the data usage shown in bill. This would not have been due to a metering delay as I have used absolutely no data for the last 2 days of the period.

This didn't happen when I was using optus prepaid. Delay in metering was only a few hours at max, and did not confuse me with untimely usage notifications.

Another issue I had, which has little relevance, was with $0 month to month plan data not shared correctly. The plan showed on my dashboard(and still shows) "sharable data - contributing services" and confirmed with 2 Optus reps that the data is shared. However data for this service was metered separately and ended up being charged over $100. I talked to the rep and they acknowledged the fault but would only take $40 off my bill.

I have taken these matters to TIO to have overcharged fee waived and get out of contract with this terrible company. Still waiting for reply from optus.

    • The Optus App updates data usage every 4 hours (which is frustrating)

    • How much data did you end up using additionally? Can't you get apps to monitor data usage?

      • 3GB over the limit. It's not very convenient to use monitoring apps when I'm using multiple devices that share data.

        • +2

Hmm surprised you got charged over $100. I thought it was $10 per extra GB used…?

        • @ShamelessBargains:
Optus $0 month to month plan charges $0.1 for 1MB data. I've used over 1GB on this device.
So it would be the correct charge if the data was not shared.

        • @junoz86: Damn that sucks. Theres is always a catch with those data share sims. Sorry you have had such an unpleasant experience with Optus :(

        • @ShamelessBargains: Nah, I think this plan was not meant to share data with other plans. So I'm ok with not being able to share data with $0 sim. Just thought it's a great bonus though.
However I expected them to honour what their reps informed me and what their system indicated, so not very happy with how their customer service.

    • That is what I worry about. I don't have time to waste on these telecoms who can't get their systems fixed before asking for more customers.

      • Indeed. Already wasted heaps of time.

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up! Was going to do the data sharing plan and give my father a $0 per month one to use Internet, however this post has made me wary…

    • Junoz I have had similar experience since buying 2 of these plans in August based on forum recommendation. Data pooling has not worked resulting in big bills for data overrun, the EPL was not honoured as free on one phone, the student discount was not also honoured on one phone even though we purchased through the UNIDAYS website with all correct student info.

About 10 hours spent being fobbed off by customer service with one final 3 hour session in an Optus shop today which required a lot of paper and arguing to get the bills corrected. Still lost EPL on one phone and no data pooling. Tip for those trying to navigate customer service: make multiple complaints and after about 4-5 goes you make it to the supervisor.

On the surface the plan looks good - but if you have issues then put aside a lot of time. Moved 2 phones from my account to ALDI pre-paid as a result (also from Ozbargain recommendation) - service transfers in 30 minutes and brilliant so far with no bills to waste time.

      p.s. I don't work for ALDI

  • I fell for unlimited txt, its also for selected countries. Had to pay AUD4.96 on top of my bill.

    • Lucky it wasn't $50

  • Does anyone know about the T&Cs for getting $20 off per month if you also have your Home Phone and Broadband with Optus?

Just wondering if this deal will work with that? As well as if it will work in combination with the 10% uni email discount. So $40/month - $20 - 10% equalling $26/month.

    • Pretty sure all those discounts stack.

      • Talk to online chat they will do it for you.
My parents are on Optus cable and I used my student discount + $20 off every month to sign up their mobile plan.

    • Yeah they all stack, I'm only paying around $23/month for this deal.

  • get same deal a couple months back, plus 1 season EPL subscription for free

  • +1

I signed up for a $40/mth - 8GB SIM plan about 2 weeks ago. Once I saw this deal I popped into a store today and they put me on the phone to their sales staff. After a bit of faffing around on the phone I ended up getting my plan upgraded to this at no extra charge. Thanks for the post OP, I now have an extra 2GB a month to burn through.

    • +1

All good, gotta love extra data at no extra cost :)

  • Just got off chat with Telstra. They will not match the price but willing to give $20 discount on their $70 plan and also throw in 2gb bonus data per month. So make it $50 per month with 12gb data.
Their international call and txt is unlimited (a list of country) for both landline and mobile.
Not bad at all with Telstra!

    • Optus had a 15gb $50 plan.

    • hmm. I'm attempting the same over the phone with telstra and getting a bit of the run around -> claiming $10 is maximum discount on $70 plan, i.e. $60 monthly for large BYO; unable to add further bonus data…

Just wondering, would the online chat be going through to a different department? (?more luck that way) Also, were you already off contract today when negotiating or still on (mine's ending v. soon). Thanks for the help

      • +1

I have 2 more months before my contract finishs with Telstra. So I linked the Optus deal and asked for price match. They wouldnt do that but pointed me to their $70 plan with 10gb data. He was willing to give me $20 off and add 2gb data so I took the deal. No contract break fees or anything if I take the deal today. You should try again with a different Rep. I am sure you can get the same deal.

        • thanks mate, i ended up trying again via livechat and getting the same deal -> 12 mo for BYO large ($50/mo with discount) and 12 gb of data. The rep said the data + discount would be forfeited at end of 12 mo term though -> will just have to negotiate again next year…

    • 12 monthly contract yea?

      • Yes 12 month contract

  • +2

Signed up using my student email address, $36 a month is a steal for this. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Does anyone know if the student discount works with Tafe sa edu email addresses?.

What about data free streaming of std Netflix?. Or is that a upgrade I would have to do?.

    • I don't see why it wouldn't work. The criteria is to have an edu.au email address. You also need to go to the Optus student site (linked in OP) and claim a promo code.

One code per edu email address and it's unique.

  • Boost Mobile has some nice prepaid plans at the moment. $50 for 11GB of data, unlimited txt, unlimited calls/txt to standard national numbers, and unlimited calls/txt to 10 countries. The $40 plan is basically the same, just 2GB of less data.

  • Be careful, if you want to port out later there is a $7.50 processing for each service!! Never touching Optus again!! Ever!!
Can't post a link right now but it's there in terms and conditions somewhere. Experienced it first hand a few months ago.

    • Telstra has exactly the same fee, only they charge $8 for it. So don't think this is something that's confined to Optus.

    • Is this because you are on a contract ? or just a standard port out fee?
We have just transferred 6 services to optus… hahah

      • Not because of contract. I was on month to month sim only plan.
Edit: let's hope that you're satisfied with the service for a very long time!

        • Hopefully, the main reason for the switch was the data sharing across sims that don't have a plan.
Oh well, win some and lose some. I will heavily contest that fee if they try it on with us when we leave

  • +1

For those students having problems applying their code on offer.optus.com.au (where you have to place your discount code after selecting your plan), make sure that the website you're visiting has https:// in front of the domain name. I've tried using the discount code and the discount code didn't work before because it wasn't on HTTPS

  • +3

Was paying $24 for this plan, now paying $14!

    $60 - 10% (Uni Discount)= $6
    Online Discount = $20
    OPTUS Bundle Discount = $20

    $60 - $46 = $14. Winning!

    • Wow some nice saving stacking going on there :)

    • Wow how did you get the OPTUS bundle discount?

I am paying $27 for the same plan.

      Uni discount: 10%
      Online offer: $20
Having OPTUS home phone and broadband: $10

      • For the $20 discount.

        http://www.optus.com.au/shop/bundles/20-dollar-discount

        ELIGIBLE OPTUS MOBILE SERVICES:
Monthly mobile phone plans with a value of $30/mth or more
SIM only plans with a value of $30/mth or more

        ELIGIBLE OPTUS HOME BROADBAND SERVICES:
Optus NBN and Optus Cable plans
Optus Reach and DSL Direct plans
        Home wireless broadband

        • Great thanks!

  • My student discount code doesn't work - on closer inspection the email says "Here's your promo code to save 10% off your monthly plan fees on any 24 month phone plan or SIM Only plan. Just apply your code in checkout."

So it appears it can't be used on a 12 month plan. Did anyone get it to work?

    • +1

I requested a student code yesterday via email and it worked fine, another guy here did the same thing and when trying to use his it said it had already been redeemed and the Optus chat weren't able to do anything about it other than to tell him to wait 24 hours and try again. It's only been about 22 hours so far but if he gets anywhere I'll let you know.

      • I only got my code today…maybe it takes a while to work. Did yours say what mine did about the 24 month contract?

        • Yep the email said it's valid for 24 month contracts or SIM only - something to that effect.
I had problems initially with the online sign up so I went to the online chat and gave the guy my edu email address and the code (which was sent to me a couple of minutes after requesting it).

No issues at all, but as I said above a guy sitting next to me did the same thing and they told him his code had already been redeemed. We ran out of time to try it again today so will do tomorrow.

        • @bonezAU: Did the same today - online chat and no issues. :)

        • @churchado:

Awesome. They have promised my SIM card will be delivered today even though the StarTrack Express tracking details say "Ready for Pickup" and "Received Advanced Shipping Notice" with a timestamp of 13:31 yesterday. No scan since then and I'm in Perth.

Have been promised several times on the chat yesterday and today that my SIM will be delivered today and I should ignore the tracking… hmmmmmm. Will see :)

  • +1

I ordered mine a couple days ago with my student 10% off discount, and my first email from them details my monthly as $36 at a minimum of $432 over contract terms. My second email for tracking has a Contract and Critical Information Summary, and it details $40 monthly with NO sign of the 10% student discount at a minimum cost of $480 over contract terms. Should I contact Optus about this?
