Just remember its only for those that are eligible (however I'm sure there are alternative ways of getting around the restriction).
"This offer is only available to eligible students, staff and faculty who possess a valid email address at an educational institution geographically located in Australia. This offer is non-transferable."

I was annoyed when the price jummped up a few days before I got around to buying it. Just about to put a purchase through now.

Offer Duration:
This offer shall continue until terminated by Microsoft.
Microsoft reserves the right to terminate this offer at any time.

EDIT: Some of your comments have reminded me of a few things about the offer (which I knew already, but slipped my mind so I'll now share).

  1. Although its called UPGRADE, it can be used as a CLEAN install. I've done it myself. Instructions aren't hard to find via google.

  2. It was $50 from the time the offer started until the end of March. From April 1 it switched to $119. Now its back to $50 for who knows how long.

  3. Yes, you can purchase multiple licences if you have access to multiple (valid) email addresses. However this does breach the T+C (http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/itsnotcheating/te…)

  4. You can pick which install iso you would like (x64 or x86). Or download both. They are roughly 3GB each (give or take 500mb). There is a time limit until the download links disappear however, so make sure you time it right if your quota is tight (which is why I got screwed when the price went up…my internet resets on the 7th of each month).

  5. You do not get the install DVD unless you pay some extra money for it…$16 it seems.

  6. Using the iso you can install via USB (I used Win2Flash to make it install via one of my externals). Installs much faster too, since USB is faster than DVD. I think it was only about 15mins until my Windows install did its first restart.

  7. If I notice any more points in the comments I'll add them here, but I have an exam in the morning so won't be checking too often.

    • Remember the key works for both 32 and 64. If you can get your hands on the installation for either, download the other one.

  • Hey guys

I have the RC on my computer and its now expired so i constantly get the notice saying i need to upgrade etc.

Just checked my uni email and it seems to still be valid.

So is it all good to go from the RC to this upgrade? Is a Clean install needed/possible?

Plus i would rather pay the extra $16 + shipping for the CD copy.

    Thanks

    • There should be no problem doing an upgrade from the RC version. But in saying that, you are still better off doing a clean install - you will have fewer problems in the long run.

The It's Not Cheating download says it's an UPGRADE but you can use the download for a clean install as well.

      • Yeah i was thinkin i would need to do a clean install but just wanted to make sure that i wouldnt have to input any verification of a previous install etc.

        Sounds good.

      • Actually you have to do a clean install of windows 7 if you have the RC version.
(Unless you don't mind hacking the windows installer) link

  • Is the "backup" DVD like an OEM disc, does it come with the product key? Can it be resold or would that be against the licence terms?

    • +1

I'm just guessing but the product key wouldnt come with the disc, and it DEFINITELY would be against the license terms to resell it.

      • Okay thanks. I'm still a bit confused about licence terms. Is it only for the personal use of the TAFE/Uni student? Can it be used in a commercial environment?

        • From the link http://www.microsoft.com/info/au-en/cpyright.mspx

          PERSONAL AND NON-COMMERCIAL USE LIMITATION.

Unless otherwise specified, the Services are for your personal and non-commercial use. You may not modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, publish, license, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any information, software, products or services obtained from the Services.

          • @ozhunter: That appears to be a general terms of use. I was meaning specifically for software bought through It's Not Cheating.

For example, what's stopping somebody with a business or internet cafe who has a few uni friends or their own old uni email addresses from purchasing multiple copies of Windows 7 Pro? This could potentially save hundreds or thousands of dollars for their business.

  • I ordered it + $14 for disk kit. So I will get the dvd sent to me right?

I've ordered this for a machine I'm building a couple of months, So i shouldn't have an issue doing a clean install for that machine?

    Thanks in Advance.

    • "doing a clean install"

The OP said that its a upgrade version. Do they still allow you to use an upgrade version as a full version like Win XP?

  • Office 2010 is AUD $99 now not $50… ripped off !

  • the US "special" price for academic version of Office 2010 is $USD149.. i think that is more ripped off. Count your blessings

  • Good price but I consider linux a better bargain at $50 cheaper.
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx is a free download and replaces everything I need my PC to do.
    No more Windows upgrades. :)

  • Is there a list of University that has joined the MSNDAA network? Anyone knows if Monash or UNSW is part of this program?

    • I'm not sure about Monash but I know that UNSW is.

      Link to UNSW's MSDNAA:
      http://msdn70.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/Storefront.aspx?…

      That's where I got windows 7.

I'm not sure about other universities but for UNSW I think as a requirement you have to be doing a computing course.

You'll be provided a login which you need for that site I linked to.

Having friends doing computing courses also does the trick. ;)

    • type the uni's name and then MSDNAA into google and find out for yourself.
