It's Not Cheating: Win7 Pro Back to $50 (Was $119)

This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Just remember its only for those that are eligible (however I'm sure there are alternative ways of getting around the restriction).
"This offer is only available to eligible students, staff and faculty who possess a valid email address at an educational institution geographically located in Australia. This offer is non-transferable."

I was annoyed when the price jummped up a few days before I got around to buying it. Just about to put a purchase through now.

Offer Duration:
This offer shall continue until terminated by Microsoft.
Microsoft reserves the right to terminate this offer at any time.

EDIT: Some of your comments have reminded me of a few things about the offer (which I knew already, but slipped my mind so I'll now share).

  1. Although its called UPGRADE, it can be used as a CLEAN install. I've done it myself. Instructions aren't hard to find via google.

  2. It was $50 from the time the offer started until the end of March. From April 1 it switched to $119. Now its back to $50 for who knows how long.

  3. Yes, you can purchase multiple licences if you have access to multiple (valid) email addresses. However this does breach the T+C (http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/itsnotcheating/te…)

  4. You can pick which install iso you would like (x64 or x86). Or download both. They are roughly 3GB each (give or take 500mb). There is a time limit until the download links disappear however, so make sure you time it right if your quota is tight (which is why I got screwed when the price went up…my internet resets on the 7th of each month).

  5. You do not get the install DVD unless you pay some extra money for it…$16 it seems.

  6. Using the iso you can install via USB (I used Win2Flash to make it install via one of my externals). Installs much faster too, since USB is faster than DVD. I think it was only about 15mins until my Windows install did its first restart.

  7. If I notice any more points in the comments I'll add them here, but I have an exam in the morning so won't be checking too often.

Who is eligble for this offer ??

    • Website says: Current TAFE or Uni students, with a valid .edu.au email address.

Also of note, it's Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE - not full version.

      • +7

in practice, if you have a common *.edu.au email address, you can get it.

Many universities have a .alumni..edu.au email address, which generally works. Also many unis have [email protected] and [email protected], meaning you can obtain it at least twice.

If your uni uses gmail for email, you can take advantage of plus addressing (eg [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], to get it a stack more times.

This all breaches their TOS of course though.

        • +1

          Awesome tip.

Glad to see it back to $50. Had a few friends who were interested but weren't willing to pay with the $119 price tag.

      • +1

It says Upgrade, but you can perform a clean install and the key still works. I bought the 32-bit and 64-bit versions and I've got them both clean installed on my desktop and laptop with no problem.

However, if you want to clean install on a 32-bit, you need to find/make your own .iso since Microsoft only gives the disk image for the 64-bit version.

    • Link to eligible Uni/Tafe also has verification link if yours doesnt provide an email address.

      http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Acti…

    • (oops, I accidentally downvoted you. Sorry!)

    • University staff are also allowed. Text says:

"You must be a student enrolled at or be a staff member actively employed by one of these qualified institutions in Australia."

  • -1

students etc. would like to know how to get one "without" being a student

  • Would appear that is only an UPGRADE not a stand-alone version for $49. No indication if it's 32 or 64 bit either.

    • u can choose whether u want it 32 or 64 bit.

      • Your wording isn't 100%, so I'll just chime in on this one..

Each copy of Windows 7, that I've come seen, includes 2 DVD's, one for 32bit and one for 64bit. So you can install whichever copy you prefer.

        • +1

u wont get any physical media with this deal

        • Note that in this offer you do not get the DVD, unless you pay $16+ shipping.

        • +1

Interesting mine came as one disk with an option at the start of install to choose 32 or 64

Also i have the upgrade and it does install the full version ie does not look for anything pre installed or ask for a vista etc license

  • just got MS Office Pro 2010 thru work for $8.50. nice.

I used ubuntu for years at home and have finally been convinced to come back to the microsoft camp because of windows 7.

After the 10th time you need to recompile your kernel or something to get a printer working, you stop bothering. The laptop I was running it on hasn't had a working intel video driver since 9.04.

      • +2

I have ubuntu/win7 Dual boot, needless to say ubuntu doesnt get a whole lot of use, problematic, poor driver support

    • +2

      thanks for the laugh

    • Linux?? How painful is that,… even for free it hurts. Reminds me of the old DOS days setting up hardware, program incompabilities, aaaghhh!!

      • Vista?? How painful is that,… even for $$$ it hurts. Reminds me of the old DOS days setting up hardware, program incompabilities, aaaghhh!!

      • Bet xywolap has never used Ubuntu.

  • +3

Just to let you guys know, this upgrade version can also be installed as a NEW/FRESH INSTALL. It doesn't need to upgrade from Vista.

    • ditto. I've done that too (spent the extra on a backup disk)

  • +2

There are instructions on how to convert the 'upgrade' into a bootable thumb drive…

    The CD Key is:
    - valid for both 32bit and 64bit
    - usable with a clean install.

I bought this last year and built a bootable thumb drive to perform a clean install of windows 7, which is the only way to go when upgrading from XP.

    • Well yes and no

mine didn't work as a clean install.
I had to install it, try the key (rejected as it's an upgrade key), but then I just upgraded from that.

      • upgraded from what? You had to use an XP key with a clean-install of this Win7?

        • +1

Nah you install it once, and when it asks for the key and fails you are left with a not really usable machine.

but you can "upgrade" from that machine to another install of win7.

M$ doesn't really care because its still better than most of you guys pirating it instead.

          • @muzzamo: thats right muzzamo

            • @theguyrules: When it rejects the key, you continue on (proceeding to the 'trial version'). After that, once everything is setup, you go in and manually change the cd key and this is where it accepts it. That's the final bit in the clean install process.

              • @schwinn: Windows 7 Full for $50 - bargain in my eyes.

    • There is an application that will do this for as it can be a royal pain in the ass to get working

  • so would this work with a 'student' version of XP that I got off Torrents?

    • I think if you're from XP it forces you to do a full install instead. Upgrade is only from Vista so your torrent XP will get wiped anyway.

      • So are you saying if I have XP, I can't use this product?

        • +1

No it means it will do a clean install if you upgrade from XP.

          • @Shadowsfury: OK. Cheers mate

          • +1

@Shadowsfury: It does not provide the files for a 'clean install' though. It only has the capacity for an upgrade from Vista to 7.

If you have XP you'll need to go through the process of converting the downloaded files into a bootable format (dvd or thumb drive) - do a google on this, there are also some instructions on whirlpool.

    BACK?
i got the 64bit version like 1-2 months ago for $50

the old deal is still there…
although it did say it will end like Jan(?) i was still able to purchase it

    • +1

Read my updated info. Yeah it was available until 31 March then it went to $119 until now.

    • I thought that the price would come down again in the new financial year, but it was definitely $119 when I tried to buy it recently. I am glad to see the $50 price back already.

  • I can only see Win 7 & Office 2010 on that website. Do they sell other MS products?

To people who have taken up this offer, how big is the download for Win 7, and for Office 2010?

    Thanks.

    • That's about it really. I think there's 1 other offer, but its some minor software.

The download is about 3GB, give or take. 64bit will be larger than 32bit.

    • from "memory" my office 07 installation was 32mb…

Also, most universities have a network so you can legally grab the installation file. i.e. aarnet mirror

  • Im going to buy a new PC in few months, is it possible to install this on my current pc then unistall it later when I install on my new pc?

    • I've gone through 3 machines since i purchased a ms office 2007 license key. I formated the old hard drive, and have never had an issue activating with the new one. (i dont know if its illegal though)

      • I've heard about people having to ring up MS to activate their it's-not-cheating windows or office. Can anyone else confirm you don't need to ring up to reactivate?

        • i did it online. took about 5 secs (on a good internet connection)

      • Think MS have stepped back slightly from their genuine advantage days of the last few years. didnt give them a great rep. As long as you dont use widely used pirated volume license key, its not going to matter too much.

Also, if you've just upgraded to a new comp, i dont see the problem in 'transferring'. Your still using it only one computer as per the license. If the worst happens, and you fail windows genuine advantage, there are workarounds for it. You do have the legal version, so it wont be totally 'illegal' in bypassing it.

  • are there any good deals around for office 7?. $100 is a bit steep!

  • excuse the ignorance but what's the difference between 64 and 32 bit?

    • depends on your processor. if you have a 32 bit processor you need to get the 32bit. otherwise get 64bit. 64bit is newer technology that allows for the use of more RAM (ie speeds your comp up). google to find out how to check.

      • Most experts recommend installing the 32-bit version of MS Office 2010 on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. And, apparently MSO 2011 for MAC will only come in the 32-bit flavour.

        • didnt know this.. will be doing this soon. 32bit more stable?

    • +2

What's the difference between 64 and 32 bits? ANS: 32-bits. Well, somebody had to say it.

  • -5

Correct link please. The heading says MS Windows, the link refers to MS Office. Is there a link that refers to both?

    • +5

click on windows 7 in the link provided. its not that difficult.

  • Anyone knows the link to download OFFICE 2010 for those people buying OFFICE2007 in april 2010? it suppose to be free upgrade but where is the link to download this free upgrade?

    Please let me know. thanks

    • didnt know about the free upgrade.. also interested!

  • Difference between pro and ultimate?

    • uhh google?

    • The only 2 major differences between Pro and Ulti is the Bitlocker support and the multi-language MUI support.

Bitlocker is just a drive encryption feature that helps you protect your secret data

The multi-language MUI lets you change your computer's interface language.

See this chart for more info.

    • The only obvious advantage in ultimate version is BitLocker.

  • Also, Office 2010 is now $100? I thought it was $75 some time ago.

    • +1

It was $75 last week! I was going to buy it (it was Office 2007 with a free upgrade to 2010). Now it's just the 2010 Academic version for $99.

Wish I bought it last week, save yourself the $14 and get the same product in the end (plus there were some 2007 features not in 2010 you could keep). It's currently uni exam time, so most uni students I know wouldn't be looking at buying office in this period as they're too busy with their noses in text books. Which is why I didn't buy it.

      • I think you meant save $24.

        • You're right, with my brain functioning this well let's hope I don't fail my exam tomorrow morning :P

edit: Just wanted to add, we do get shafted on prices somewhat.

          It's $29.99USD across the ocean for Windows 7 ($35AUD). Office 2010 Academic is $79.95 USD ($93.35AUD).

          http://www.microsoft.com/student/office/en-us/default.aspx

  • HAHAHA i see this is back

    wait multiple license

one email = one license or multi??? ;(

    • One email lets you get one 64 bit version and one 32bit, for $50 each. Not 100% sure, but I think the product keys are interchangeable, so you could install 2 32bit versions and have valid product keys.

      • Correct. You can purchase up to 2 copies of Windows 7. 1 x 32bit and 1 x 64bit. This will allow installation in any of the following combinations. As the 32bit & 64bit as the supplied keys work on both 32bit & 64bit windows 7 as they are same as the keys supplied with retail OS that comes with one key and both 32bit & 64bit installation media.

        • 2 x 64bit
        • 2 x 32bit
        • 1 x 32bit and 1 x 64bit
        • hey so if i were to buy 1 key 32 or 64 and i bought both cd's (i prefer hard copy) would i be able to install both? could i interchange that 1 key for both 32 and 64?

          • @thanq: You can not buy one key and two copies of the cd. If you buy 32bit then you can only order 32bit dvd. Same goes for 64bit. If you want to get the one key and use 32bit or 64bit then you will have to download the other version you have not purchased. If you want to change upgrade or downgrade your windows between 32bit and 64bit.

Same as if you get an OEM OS where only one DVD containing either 32bit or 64bit is supplied withen purchased. Not both like a retail package costing more contains.

THIS IS FOR OFFICE 2010, NOT WINDOWS 7

Bloody hell, it's downloading at 50Kb/s. What's the go! Microsoft stuff has always downloaded at over 1Mb/s for me.

Am I the only one having speed issues?

    • +1

      ur capped? LMAO???

      • Nopes, everything else was fine, Office was downloading at 150, then 100, and settled at 50kb/s for the next 3 or so hours.

Tried downloading something else and it went at 1Mb/s, so I point my finger at digital river.

  • Hi Guys If you're getting this deal, it would mean that you're in uni? Why don't you just get it off MSNDAA. Its all free software, I just downloaded Windows 7 pro 32 bit and office project 2010 for free today and you could also get 64 bit free as well. Ask your college about it. A lot of people don't know as they don't really tell you about it.

    • It's not on there anymore. It was only there for like a week when it came out, then it was removed because everyone was just joining to get windows 7 cheap.

      • What do you mean? This is my software list http://msdn70.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/Storefront.aspx?…

A lot of this software I have no idea what they are so still trying to figure out what I should get. I'm gonna grab the expensive ones before I graduate LOL

        • Wth i got jipped lol, this is the one I've got http://msdn01.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/Storefront.aspx?…

          • @ozhunter: hmmm thats no good…I always thought it was the same for everyone. Does your account work on my page? Or you can come to RMIT for a semester :P

            • @fuzor: I did join just to get windows 7, but they removed it hours before I finished signing up. So that was a waste of $19 lol. I already bought the upgrade from Its not cheating in October so no need for me to join. I can't log in to the link you posted.

              • @ozhunter: I cant believe you guys had to pay to join. The software range is so limited

              • +1

@ozhunter: I joined some tech organisation just to get access to Win7 too! And then I missed out by about 1 day. So pissed. $30ish dollars and nothing to show for it except email newsletters that are auto-sent to my bin.

So I gave up after a while then decided I'll just buy it via itsnotcheating, but then they decided to jack up the price before I could get to it.

I think this $50 offer will be more permanent, maybe they found sales dropped off too much when they upped the price.

Office 07 was $75 right until now. I remember I bought that from INC for $75 way back in first year uni.

        • Lucky RMIT is part of the MSNDAA network.
Curtin University in Perth cancelled it's subscription around 4-5 years ago… so now it sucks to get the latest softwares -___-"

  • Hmmm how do I download for both 32bit and 64bit? When I went trough the purchase I had to choose 32 or 64?

    • It's $50 for each version($100 for both). You have to do it one at a time
