        Thanks heaps hasher!

Fantastic price. Just ported two telstra services across. I am a Google Music addict too so this is a huge bonus. Thanks heaps.

Edit: also can share data across the two plans which is nifty :)

  • Just ported from Telstra as well. Great deal.

  • +1

Can I buy now and activate later?

    • I think so. Just let them know your intention and also just activate the sim they send out to you, when you're ready… probably can't delay it too long thoughl

  • ++ International inclusion
Up to 300 minutes for standard international calls to selected countries

    • But what are the countries. Cant find the info :(

      • +1

Found it;SELECTED COUNTRIES INCLUDE:Austria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA and Vietnam.

      • Cool

  • Couple of questions:

If I port my number over, does my current service stay connected until i get the sim in the mail and activate (also how long does it take to post)?

    and

Is this available in-store so I don't have to wait for them to mail the sim card?

    Thanks :)

      1. In my experience, yes
      2. Probably not.
  • Thanks OP. Signed up.

  • +1

If the postie leaves your sim card in your mailbox, even though they aren't meant to, your sim will be marked as delivered and Optus will auto start the porting process. They disabled my other sim at 11am.

"Data will be counted in kilobytes, and includes uploads and
downloads. The cost of excess data is $10 per additional 1GB.
If you use more than your included data during your billing
month (either on your mobile phone or any connected mobile/
mobile broadband device), we’ll automatically give you another
1GB for $10. Each time you use all of your data inclusion we’ll
give you another 1GB for $10, up to a maximum of 150GB
additional data on one account per month. Your service may
then be restricted or we may continue to charge you at these
    rates.
At the end of your billing month, you’ll automatically be moved
back to your plan’s inclusions and charges."

Does this mean that for every month you go over by 1KB, they will automatically top you up with 1GB and charge $10?

    • +2

Yep. Over is over. The upside is that they only count in 1KB units, unlike older plans I remember some telcos offering where they rounded all data usage up to the nearest MB.

  • +1

    good deal.
    10gb + unlimited calls $35 per month.
Optus is owned by Singtel right
Singapore Government owned investor company Temasek Holdings corporation has a major share in it. lol

  • +3

Not bad. Still not as good as the $36 a month 10gb/unlimited txt+calls with 5 data share sims deal a while back.

    • +1

Still on this plan, the data share sim is an absolute bonus. Usually it would cost at least $10/mo per a sim (with 1GB extra data).

Still, for some the $1/$5 less (student/nonstudent) is worth more than data share sims.

I'm an existing customer, but on an old month to month plan. I just signed up, and gave that existing mobile number to be ported to this.

It all worked online, but should I expect an email tomorrow telling me that I don't qualify?

    • +1

Were you still on a contract?

      • +1

No. It was just a month to month sim plan, that I'd signed on to more than 12 months earlier.

        • I just want to say good luck. They said to me new optus numbers, or port in from new service. Grrrrrr

        • @Faithgrrl: That stinks. They have sent me an email to confirm my order, so I'm hopeful.

    • I am an existing customer too on the $40 plan. I just upgraded to this $35 plan no troubles at all.
It even shows $35 under my online account already!

      • What! How did you do that? Did you just sign up online and ignored all the sales reps?

        • I did it all online. Never called or chatted to anyone.

        • I called twice. It's pot luck really. If the sales rep says no, just call back and speak to someone else. Worked for me.

        • @t3chshopper: did you sign up from the link or from your account? Are you still on the plan ie on contract or were you going month to month?

        • @bluedufflecoat: I couldn't sign up from my account - this deal didn't show up. I just followed the link, said that I wanted to transfer an existing number and entered my number. They took care of the rest.

        • @t3chshopper: do you have existing data sims linked to your account?

        • @bluedufflecoat: Just BYO phone sims.

        • I just had a go via Chat and was told I'm not qualify.

      • Yep. Just checked and mine is all updated on my online dashboard. Pretty stoked. I even scored the additional $10 off home broadband bundle.

        • do you have $20 off your broadband as well?

        • +1

@kooljp: No. I have the $90 unlimited plan (unlimited data, phone call, fetch tv box and package etc). I think the $20 off only works with newer broadband plans.

  • Good deal!

  • +1

Anyone port out and back in yet?

  • +1

Vaya falling behind - time for me to move. My main question before jumping over to this deal is whether I'd be better off with one of the telstra on-sellers - boost, woolworths or aldi. Optus is fine around town but just doesn't do that well in the country from my experience. Friends with Telstra always seem to have better reception. But what of the on-sellers? You read that they have only limited access to the Telstra network. Any advice very welcome.

  • Does this plan work for data pooling with the $45/m/25G mobile broadband sim?

So in theory it would be $80/m/35G ( if it works )

    • The CIS states that it does data pooling. So, yes that should work if you're on the $50 15GB plan.

  • great deal… left telstra to go to this!

  • +3

Asked Vodafone to match the deal but they declined. However, they offered me 10% discount which is $36/month 10Gb 300mins international calls 12month contract + 4000 Qantas points (~ $25), worked out at Vodafone offered me a better deal than Optus. I am happy with Vodafone because of the $5 roaming feature.

    • Sounds ok, but you kiss out on the unlimited Music streaming

      • that's ok, 10Gb is enough for me, even I listen to music online. I travel several times a year, so I need the $5 roaming.

  • Any carriers that does similar plan but with data sharing sims? Was tempted to go with this one then saw the comment that they no longer do data sharing :(

    • Not sure what you mean by data sharing. I share a data pool with my wife. It's one of their advertised features. Is that not what you're referring to?

      • sorry i meant like another sim so i can use the data on my ipad too. Do you mean that you pay for 2 plans or 1 plan?

      • From previous page:

broot 17 hours 23 min ago
is the data share with one-off $5 sim still available? need to share across my ipad. cant find on the site anymore.

yoshi 12 hours 49 min ago
unfortunately its not available anymore. missus tried to sign up (one off $5) and was told by Optus their no longer doing that.. apparently they were losing money on it - according to the rep.

        • Right. Pity that's not on offer anymore as I'd definitely sign on to that.

  • I also have the second sim with optus but won't be able to switch to this plan without changing my number apparently.. Do any of the other telcos offer data sharing with a second sim like optus used to?

    • Just did some googling and I think Telstra does it for extra $5 per month and Vodafone does it for extra $10 per month.

      • Thanks, i'll check it out!

  • I ported over from Amaysim, which used to be the best deal around. This is a very promising deal though.

  • +1

If you have 3 if these ans on the same account, do you share 30gb?

    • Yes. That's how their sharing works.

  • can you tether with this sim in a phone?

    • I do it regularly on the bus. Have used for Youtube and Netflix successfully.

    • I just spoke to customer service and they said you can't hotspot to share the unlimited Music streaming!

I forgot to clarify if that was only limited to the unlimited Music!

  • I currently have a $35 mobile broadband plan for 10GB with free epl with them, and was able to sign up this deal ($35 per month for 10GB with calls and text) with them.So in total i have like 20Gb .Just confirming to those who are unsure if you are able to do it.

  • I'm still on the old Telstra $39 Family & Friends Staff plan! This is tempting… going to jump onto live chat with Telstra to see if they can give me a decent counter-offer. I'd love to have a decent data allowance.

    • I am also on old $39 staff plan and just pulled the trigger to this deal. Optus coverage isn't as good but the best counter plan you'll get from Telstra will be their $40 mx plan but it doesn't include as much as this plan.

  • -1

Good deal but no free intl calls.

    • Did u even look at the plan details or read the 10 comments already mentioning it? "Up to 300 standard International Mins to selected countries"

      • Ok. But where is it mentioned in the post? It says All for use within Australia.. Post should have it clearly mentioned as it's an important feature.

  • I ordered last night (around 9:30pm) and haven't seen any movement on the order at all.

Has anyone else's order moved? They say it should be next business day if ordered before 1pm, but it's not looking likely that it's even going to be tomorrow…

  • Updated my existing telstra no to 70 byo telstra plan and extra 5gb for 40/mnt with 30 monthly credit. Just mentioned that optus is doing this special and they did it to my both no without any negotiations via online chat

    • what's your plan now? I'm on chat with telstra and the best they are offering is the L plan (10gb, unlimited calls) for $55 - otherwise $1000 calls and 5gb for $40. Can you help me squeeze through?!?! :D

      • you're doing better than I am - they only offered me $60 for the L plan

        • I'm still trying!! Will post back with progress ;)

        • @picogary:

Telstra would only offer me L plan with $20 credit, so $50 per month, when I was on chat with them today!

        • +1

          @thriftylashes:
I did this last month with the $40 10Gb Optus deal
The base chat guys are quite stubborn, you have to ask to talk to retention's OR end your live chat and do the survey, select the "my problem was not resolved" action and select live chat to reach a resolution. You will talk to another live chat rep but they will be much more helpfull!

EDIT: Also they put me on the $70 BYO Plan and discounted it to $40 if that helps. Good luck getting it for $35! If you talk to the right rep you never know until you ask :D

        • @rgavin: You did better than me… they gave me the $20 discount (dropping Telstra L plan down to $50) and then added a one-off credit of $60 making the total $45 per month for 12 months, and I don't have to leave Telstra.

        • @rgavin:

I tried again and they wouldn't drop below $50 - the agent claimed this would be break business rules and would lead to disciplinary action against the agent offering this! The agent did increase the monthly data to 12Gb for $50 though.

        • @thriftylashes: Yeah the level 1 sales guys just go around in a circle reading the script. Gotta get the attention of someone who is not paid to be a robot! xD

        • @rgavin: I signed up on-line in a few minutes with no issues. I'm not eligible for any discount though as this will be my only Optus service.

  • Anyone have the Mobile TV package and can comment on the quality of the stream?

    • I got the $40 10GB BYO 12 Month plan recently (same as this but $5 more). I was told when I tried to apply that I couldn't get their mobile TV streaming add-on for that plan. It told me to upgrade to a phone plan (rather than sim).

  • Anyone know how long the credit check takes? Mrs signed up to this plan and chose Friday for the SIM delivery but at the end of the application it asked her to send scanned photo ID and said it could take up to 3 additional business days for a credit check…. sigh.

She has a clean credit history so I guess this just delays the process more than anything else.

    • It depends on who processes your application/your luck. On one of their similar deals many months ago, some people had their applications processed straight away, whereas others, including myself, had to go back and forth emailing them all kinds of documents for weeks. I had been with Optus for over 12 years now (with prepaid though), and I had rage-cancelled my application due to stress and their hard-to-understand overseas staff. I thought about applying for this one, but when I saw that 'credit check' and other info on the deal page I changed my mind. Can't deal with all that headache as I hardly use my mobile phone for text or talk, so I better stay on my prepaid and save some money. Good luck to your Mrs.

      • Strange, I didn't get anything about the credit check when I signed up… what gives?

        • +1

I think it depends on which option you choose for payment. If you go with direct debit, then they don't need to check anything. It's just when you choose to be billed monthly that they do the checking.

        • @AussieDaddy: Makes sense, I've chosen the DD option

  • Damn! Missed out on the deal. How often do these specials come up these days,? I'm not talking click frenzy, but good prices on mobile phone plans?

    • +1

Optus and Vodafone are running similar SIM only plans every month or so.
Vodafone still has one going, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/273779

      • When was the last time Optus ran a plan like this?

        • @bender: None of them are below $40 (a difference of $60 over the 12 months) and I didn't see unmetered music streaming included either - a major selling point for many, including me.

        • @elektron:
Music streaming doesn't interest me. I get my own music elsewhere, all I want is data.

This Virgin deal has free music streaming and 12GB of data for $40 p/month and they use Optus network.
          http://www.virginmobile.com.au//monthly-mobile-plans/sim-pla…
I wish I had seen this deal before I signed up with Optus. An extra $5 p/mth is okay with me if I'm getting more data.

This last year I've paid out an extra $190 to IInet for going over their shitty 2GB data limit.

        • @bender: If you don't care about music streaming you're probably not the primary target for this deal, although at $35 the unmetered streaming is just a bonus. However, the high upvote number means that many of us see it as a rather big deal, and it's also the lowers price at which unmetered music streaming has been available.

I think the Virgin deal is comparable to this one as you get a couple of GB of extra data for the extra $5. Personally, I wouldn't want to go over $35 as it's already more than what I'm paying now for 3GB and I don't think I'll ever go over 10GB, especially with unmetered music.

        • @elektron:
I'm not the primary target either, but with the $20/m rebate for broadband customers this is a $15/m for unlimited calls/text and (for my use) unlimited data SIM plan. In return I have to put up with Optus support and network, but I hope I can manage.

        • @Wolfy: Sweet deal! It will be my only Optus service (haven't had a chance to activate the SIM yet), so will be paying the 'full' $35…

I'm currently on the Optus network with Vaya with no issues of note where I am.

  • +1

As per usual Optus Customer service, chat and phone support are utterly abysmal.

Optus ported my number before I even received the SIM card, which just happened to be the middle of the day when I needed to use my phone.
Optus support person 1 said it was the usual procedure and Telstra could restore my service.
Telstra blamed Optus and said my Telstra SIM could not be re-activated.
Optus support person 2 couldn't explain why the number was released by Telstra without my activation-request or how it could happen if i didn't have the SIM card yet.
Only option anyone could give me was to physically visit an Optus store to resolve the mess.

    • Did you get yours activated?
I received my SIM on Friday 4:30pm and called activation line straight away and they said it should be done in 2hrs - 3hrs.
More than 17 hrs later and I'm still waiting so I went online again and tried online activation and while I was there I gave them a 0/10 satisfaction rating.

      • My number was ported, released from Telstra and 'activated' before I had the SIM card.

        • Optus lied to me again. I made contact this morning and gave Optus all my details again. The Optus rep said to allow 2-3 hours to activate but it's now 6.5hrs later and nothing has changed.
Instead of pissing me off they should just say that it can't be activated until Monday.

        • @bender:
If you have a local Optus Retail shop they should be able to sort things out for you, at least that's what the less than useful phone support people told me.

        • @Wolfy:
I got connected on Monday morning at about 8:30am but the delay wasn't the fault of Optus.
It was those mofos at IInet who didn't release my number.
While in the chat with the Optus lady she called IInet to immediately release my number and then she called the Optus Network engineers to prioritize my activation and I was connected in 8 min.

IInet used to be a good company to deal with but they were bought up by TPG and it's not the same.
