Breville Smoking Gun at Big W $50 Was $99 Instore

Was looking for one of these last week and found that Big W had them for $75, everywhere else has them for $119
I held off and checked today and the price has dropped down to $50!

Only catch is that you can't buy online for some reason. But the first store I checked (Karingal VIC) had heaps of stock, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.
The tag said $75, but it scans as $50. Plus you have the URL to show them if any issues.

  • Is this legal to use during a fire ban? :/

    • As legal as lighting up a ciggie, essentially the same process

As legal as lighting up a ciggie,

Which you can't do outdoors during a total fire ban.

        • +1

Literally did not know that. Wow.

        • -6

          @guy incogneto:

I doubt it would be enforced, but you aren't allow to light a match or lighter in the open during a Total Fire ban…

        • +1

Which you can't do outdoors during a total fire ban

Yes, you can light a cigarette!

        • -5

          @bobbified:

Yes, you can light a cigarette!

Not with an open flame outdoors…

Penalty for lighting a fire during a Total Fire Ban is $34,646 or 2 years in jail.

        • +3

          @jv: Citation definitely needed.

Everything I've read says discarding cigarettes in an unsafe manner is not allowed but nothing about the actual lighting/smoking of cigarettes

        • If you can use a gas fired portable BBQ outside I'd say a ciggie is fine.

but nothing about the actual lighting/smoking of cigarettes

You are not allowed to light a match or lighter in the open on a day of Total Fire Ban.

        • @Diji1: lol not sure if serious… can definitely tell you if you are serious you're very very wrong as my brothers neighbour has set fire to their back yard twice by throwing a cigarette into the garden.

        • @cdkit3: They changed the ingredients after black saturday, now they burn out differently and virtually impossible to start a fire from

        • +1

@rakeycakey: definitely possible even with FSC. The burning embers only need to light up something flammable and it goes off.

        • +2

          @Diji1:

It may be "basically impossible" but when you have a thousand idiots doing it every day the statistics stack up. I've had to put out more than one roadside fire from a cigarette when I happened to be driving past on a 40C day.

Nothing more hilarious that 5 guys pissing out a fire either…

        • @jv: hahahaha how does it feel to be wrong jv - thanks for the trip to the penalty box last week too mate!

        • @jv:

Just Incase anybody is interested in how that amount was calculated…

$30,000 to cover provision to clean up the mess from all the bush fires.
          $4,000 for the fine.
$600. Spotter fee ie. Person who reported the fire to authority.
          $40. Admistrative fee.
$6. Postage and handling of paperwork.

        • +5

Why do people insist on spewing bullshit when they clearly don't know what they are talking about?

You can light a gas BBQ under a TOBAN, which is just a much bigger version of a cigarette lighter

You may not discard lit butts, since that falls under 'would be likely to cause a fire'

HOWEVER: As per the first link the product in the OP burns solid fuel and is therefore not allowed to be used during a TOBAN.

        • @Diji1: I've seen a grass fire start when the car in front chucked a butt out the window. Only took seconds to overwhelm me and other cars that stopped to try and extinguish it before it spread. Fortunately, the firies were less than a km away (suburban Canberra) and stopped it before it got to the houses.

          Smoking
You can smoke outside. Flicking a lit cigarette out of a car window during a total fire ban is illegal and attracts a fine.

No mention of lighting the cigarette though so assumed I guess? :)

        • @jv:

          I'm not wrong…

          Well, you actually are…

You should probably stop trying to explain the law to people; you're not a lawyer.

          @jv: You 100% are lol

        • @jv:

          I'm not wrong… 100% of the time, only 99%.

          Fixed it for you JV.

        • -1

@Parentheses: Even you're bloody wrong mate.

It's not allowed to be used IN OPEN AIR during a TOBAN. You can do whatever you like indoors. Read sentence 1 - and then apologise for acting like a pompous ass.

          For clarity:

The "Open Air" is any place from which sparks or embers could escape. Undercover areas such as patios, pergolas and huts that are open or partially open to the weather are deemed to be in the open air.

  • That's awesome, never seen one before.

    • +5

if anyone asks whether ozbargain was an awesome site Im going to point them to this deal.

      It's literally a smoking gun!

  • +1

I have wanted one of these for a while. Thanks OP

  • +1

cant imagine this even working? you need to smoke for hours to get smoke flavour. would be better off with a bottle of liquid smoke or get yourself an electric smoker like a hark like ive got. probably why they are dumping the price on them, worthless gimmick

    • +2

That's right. You're not going to get a deep smoke flavor in meat like you would with hours in a smoker.
This is just a light smoke for small items like cheese, liquids, popcorn apparently.

I smoke / slow cook in my weber. But wanted to play with this for smaller things like a single burger patty etc

      • +5

Its a cold smoker, you use it to smoke items you traditionaly couldnt. Butter cheese ect.

    • +1

liquid smoke is hard to beat for convenience, and you can even use it indoors when cooking. I mix it with a bit of Kikkoman teriyaki sauce brush it onto the meat or marinate the meat in it, and into a grill pan. the sugar in the teriyaki gives nice black lines and the liquid smoke does the flavour.

Some people even put the liquid smoke in hamburger mince so the hamburgers taste smokey without cooking to the point of drying out, and you can cook them indoors.

    • I have a Polyscience smoking gun and you are partially right, it is next to useless for meats, but works well for liquids, butter, cheese and it works very well. I tried liquid smoke and find it gives a terrible flavour to everything I've tried it with.

  • +20

So it's not a bong then?

    • +2

You could try to smoke it, though you might die shortly thereafter.

    • +2

replace the included hickory and apple chips with weed and you've got yourself one ;)

    • +1

Did some googling on it. Reviews are that it pumps the smoke out too fast for it to be useful. Better to just buy a vaporiser.

      • Only good people with big lungs.

      • Wait…hold my bong

      • +1

Put the smoke in a 10L water container or balloon.

Thanks op. Pity I'm too lazy to go in store! I've become accustomed to the convenience of home delivery. In fact I'm not too sure how I would react to being in store. I may try and load cash rewards at the till and ask them to track it.

when you watch too much masterchef and start adding smoke to everything you make…

  • +3

    Smokin', somebody stop me.

  • +2

I helped out in a celebrity stage and the chef used a bee smoker to smoke items. Cover a tray with the items in it with lots of plastic wrap. Poke the smallest hole necessary to fit the nozzle in. Smoke it up . Qiuickly cover the hole in the plastic wrap and wait. We used natives vegetation and it tasted like a bush fire.

  • Good deal. I got one from a Good Guys sale for ~80 and I think that's a fine deal.

    • Have you used it much? 😀

  • +2

I've got the Polyscience version of this, so can't say what this one is like, but they are kind of fun to use. The big difference is that they make cold smoke, so you can smoke yoghurt, cheese, butter etc that would be hard in a normal smoker. You usually need to give whatever you are smoking 2-3 bursts and let it absorb, but it gives a more genuine smoked flavour than liquid smoke. I doubt most people would get value at full price, but if you can pick one up at this price you will probably be quite happy.

    • How often do you use it? It looks like a fun item to try, and I would make smoked salmon and a few other dishes a few times, but is it something you would use every week or two?

      • You would be lucky to use it once a month…you will use it a lot initially, but make sure you have space in a drawer or in the back of your cupboard next to your blow torch/juicer etc…if you do the odd dinner party you will probably dig it out and impress some friends. For 50 bucks it's probably one of the better kitchen items you can waste your hard earned cash on :)

      • I have the same one, I use it frequently to keep some smoked butter handy. The smoke infuses with butter really well and that works very well for flavouring other things (mashed potatoes are a great example). Also great for guacamole, so I use it every time we make Mexican food.

  • Smoke and mirrors. Smokey gimmick.

  • hmm… carcinogenic?

    • +1

Probably, but if you're having a glass of wine with your dinner you're consuming a known carcinogen, and if your dinner has any baked or fried starchy food it's coated in acrylamide (also a carcinogen). For the number of times someone is going to consume smoked food I doubt it's a problem compared to all the other carcinogens one can consume.

      • fair point

      • Free radicals in the air are killin me man.

  • Great! we can start to make weed popcorn !!

  • Finally, I've always been struggling to smoke my own cigarettes, now at last there's a device that will do it for me!

  • Snoop Dogg approves.

  • Just bought one from Big W Hurstville. Scanned as $75. Showed one of the fellas the website price and he manually reduced it at the checkouts. 3 left showing $99 on shelf.

  • Purchased at BigW Colonnades SA. Shelf price is $75 but item scans at $50. Four left.

  • Purchased the last one at BIGW Box Hills (VIC) today and now none left.

  • Plenty of stock at Strathpine QLD

  • If I use it on my gf, will it make her smoking hot?

    • Nah she will be fridged as ever, youll have to cuddle her warm.

  • Didn't you read? Is working with cold smoke…
