1240
C5OZ

Very competitive price for this phone with all the latest specs. I had been looking at the 200-250 dollar phones but those have considerable setbacks (no b28, etc), so I think this phone is really hitting the sweet spot for value/price.

Android OS, v6.0.1 (Marshmallow) (upgradable to 7.0) with Asus' ZenUI

2650mAH Battery. This might sound slightly low but reports say it gets a lot of distance.

Duel sim? The two sims have a duel?

    • -1

Ha. TIL the difference between dual/duel.

    • +6

No but it's got two Mexican standoffs.

  • +1

    (no b28, no NFC, etc).

    LTE B1/B2/B3/B5/B7/B8/B18/B19/B26/B28/B38/B39/B40/B41 ?????

    looks like it has b28!!

    • +1

It also has NFC. That comment was directed at other, cheaper phones. I'll try and make that clearer.

      • yep my bad..I was skimming as I do with all deals…. makes total sense when I actually read it…lol

        • Not just you, I did the same thing.

      • +9

Hi OP, hate to break it to you, my wife has this phone, it does NOT have NFC. I'm not sure where you've seen this spec, or if it's a regional thing, but if this is coming from asia (we got ours from TW) then it will be the same.

If this feature is important to you, you had better double confirm with the seller, and make sure they are aware you will return it if it indeed comes without NFC.

        Good luck!

        • Damn, you're right. I don't know where I got that from, guess I've been staring at too many spec screens lately. Fixed.

        • @thtol: hehe i know what you mean. we also assumed it had it until further investigation. it's a fantastic phone regardless, and unless you're using NFC for payments (or as we were to connect to our other gadgets), then the feature is not missed.

        • hi pptn: does the zenfone 3 Made in taiwan? or china? thank you.

      • yeah lots of chinadroids are made for their domestic market ….. band 28 means its also targeted for outside of China.
Looking nicer than some of those Xiaomi droids.

    • +1

at the 200-250 dollar phones but they all have considerable setbacks (no b28, no NFC, etc)

what OP is trying to say it's hard to find phone with B28 & NFC under $250. šŸ˜‰

      • not to mention the quality camera and gorilla glass - this phone has it all!

        • +1

Update - No NFC. Sorry. The rest of the specs are tight though.

        • @thtol:

          the specs are tight

          I didn't know specs had good friends…

  • +1

have ZenFone 2 for past 2 years.. its time to change..good phone but mine screen started turning unresponsive at the edges. now cannot use half screen right side

    • +1

So have I, but I just upgraded to the s7 about a week ago. Oh well.

The headphone jack was playing up and the sim card kept losing contact, vr didn't work properly the whole time I had it. Before that though it was pretty decent.

      • +1

Exactly the same issues as mine. Looking for a change but I think I will go for an S7 this time as well, instead of one of these.

        • +1

From now on I'll probably get one of the last years flagship phones and upgrade every few years.

        • @iLoveYourFace: This is a good policy. I still have a perfectly good and totally functional Samsung S3.
Never had a problem and just can not kill it.
It is a 2012 phone now, amazing.
I doubt you would get such longevity from some some of these Low and Mid Tier phones.

      • Had same problems, but also speaker broke and screen cracked from to much pressure on back of phone at work. Can say never had so many things go wrong with one piece of junk in my life. Have a xiaomi now and it's so much better.

        • What model Xiaomi did you go to?

        • @Tony76:
I have Xiaomi Redmi 3 pro it's slower has a lower res screen. But a massive battery and for playing some games and general use it has served me well. The note version is probably better for power users and if you want a bigger screen.

    • had zen 6, zen 2 and now using the zen 3… the zen 3 is a huge improvement over the zen 2

      • does the zenfone 3 Made in taiwan? or china? thank you.

  • +1

    Custom ROM support?
Shame it isn't the ZE552KL version which seems like it's the better version of this.

This vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X? I'm aware the Xiaomi doesn't have Band 28

    • +1

      B28
      Camera
      USB-C
      Speakers
ZenUI vs MIUI - might be more western friendly?
Ebay store warranty covers more than Aliexpress

  • +3

This phone won't ship from Australia. I bought from these guys before (different phone). Mine came from Taiwan, within a few working days.
See their disclaimer: "From oversea by express if stock shortage in AU"

    • Thanks. I've just received my tracking number and it's coming from Taiwan. Thankfully the estimated arrival is still within 7 days.

  • +2

I have this phone, I bought it from this seller, I bought the 'AQUA BLUE' colour which is rather aesthetically pleasing.

The phone is very good, great build quality and USB C. I bought it when my nexus 5x bootlooped and never went back to it once it was repaired.

I bought it for 355, 299.25 would be a pretty reasonable price.

  • +4

The Snapdragon 625 chip is amazing for battery life too. It's not the fastest, but you won't notice the difference in everyday usage, except that you can go 2 plus days between charges. It's the secret behind the Moto Z play battery life too.

  • Can someone explain the setbacks of low cost smartphones. I'm a low end user myself, mostly for phone calls and internet browsing

those have considerable setbacks (no b28, no NFC, etc)

    • +8

Most of the chinadroids ship from overseas.
They have no GST (so no TRS).
They have no local warranty or Aust Consumer Law rights.
It is possible to get a warranty via the seller, but expect a 3month turn around, with you paying $30+ to ship it back. And it is always a hassle.

Some phones will support only 2G on the second SIM, making that feature useless in Australia except for Voda after the Telstra/Optus 2g turn off is complete, and Voda will follow, limiting you to a single carrier at once, should you want 2 numbers/networks.
NFC allows you to use smartpay and other contactless things. I don't miss it myself, but if you carry no wallet it would potentially allow you to replace a card with your phone.
B28 is a frequency used by Telstra and Optus that offers improved signal strength in metro areas and coverage in some rural areas where it would otherwise not be available.
I have a b28-less phone, as does one teen. The partner and other teen have iPhones that support b28. I have yet to be in a location where they had coverage and I didn't (we are all on Telechoice, a Telstra re-seller.) But if you are in the bush with Telstra the only network, you almost certainly will need b28.

The software support is often less than you will get locally, where you can walk into a Voda/Optus/Telstra store for support. If you have ever needed this level of support you might find it challenging to support yourself via XDA forums or other less friendly sources.

I should finish that I am quite happy with my Miezu, and will very likely buy another China droid as my next phone, but I am fine with rooting or updating ROMs or other support tasks.
If this makes you still not sure, check out Oppo handsets. They are basically China droid handsets but with local warranty and support (but cost a bit more to pay for it).

      • IMO, NFC is really only useful on a fully waterproof phone (i.e. Samsung S8, user tested to be waterproof with no water damage after several hours at depths), so you can leave your wallet in the car/locker, and your car keys in a ziplock bag when you go to the pool/beach/wet&wild, etc since wallets are not generally waterproof. Apart from the wet scenario, I can't find another reason why you'd opt to pay with android pay (or apple pay) vs tapping your wallet against the POS. It doesn't work as well as a card does, and is more clunky than tapping your wallet against the POS.
What will really make NFC shine is if it can do all authentication that resides in your wallet (i.e. drivers license, myki, medicare, etc) making the wallet fully replaceable. Right now, because it can't replace these elements, NFC is mostly a gimmick.

        • Samsungs aren't tested that way. And the standard they use is one where you make up the tests yourself.

        • @Diji1: The standard they (Samsung) use is a conservative tested result (30 mins @ 1.5m). Missed the part where I said "user" tested to be several hours - i.e. non Samsung party? Various "reviewers" on youtube performing device punishment tests, including a fair few waterproof claim tests.

      • Thanks for that, really appreciate it. I think the only thing for myself to consider is the dual sim / 2g issue. And arguably being able to root or update ROMs. I've fiddled around with many PC / console tweaking things but lately can't be bothered. Still I should imagine rooting popular models will just be a matter of following a youtube or such and best done upon purchasing the phone.

        Thanks again

      • I never root a phone because that's when issues arise. Is there any value for a non tech user to Root?

As for software updates I think the opposite is true. All the local stuff is modified and updates are rarely provided so it's a soft handset upgrade tactic.

        • i'm totally happy with the old version of Android on my Xperia Z. I think marshmallow. Yeah perhaps you're right and I shouldn't bother with rooting a phone. I use my phone less and less nowadays, or rather I use it for less and less apps and functions. Have about 10 things I use it for, 10 solid working apps and that's all I need

    • I find the Samsung phone typically last 2-3 years(without screen cracks, water, etc)… the zenfone typically last 1-1.5 years, but for half the price, the main issue I've had with the zenfone 3 is the last update corrupted the phone what meant i had to downloading the original rom on my PC, put it on my memory card n reformat the phone, not difficult, but could be confusing for the non tech sazy

  • +2

Just to stir up the naysayers, this doesn't support QC3.0 ;)

But very good price indeed for all other available features for a sub $300 phone. Thanks OP

    • +3

Neither does Samsung Galaxy S8 come with QC3.0. šŸ˜‰

    • -1

QC 3 and QC 2 makes a phone when charging Hottt ………. I only use QC for emergencies else slow charge overnight.

  • Had this phone but 'handed' it down to my wife after buying the mi5s….which was a silly thing todo!

    great phone!

  • +1

specs…I thought ZenFone 2 had 4GB RAM but ZenFone 3 has only 3GB RAM?

    • Zenfone 2 was an oddity with it's RAM. You should get more performance out of this one due to other specs anyway.

      • +1

But lowering the RAM on a newer device is just strange.

        • This is the base model. The bigger version (5.5") has 4GB of ram, and the deluxe version can go up to 6GB.

    • I believe you can buy 4GB RAM - same phone - i think around $60-70 more. Check the ebay store

  • +1

Will this work ok with optus?

  • How does this compare to the LG G4 in terms of speed? and battery life

    • +6

Not as fast but it may have better stamina than the LG.

Also the LG G series are ticking boot looping time bombs, ready to turn into an out-of-warranty paper weight at any moment. hope you are already aware of what's wrong with them?

    • +2

This one might not boot loop!!
My LG G4 boot looped early this month(about 14mths old). qd_au agreed to replace the phone (fingers crossed).

      • My phone has also boot looped. How long is the warranty? Mine is also bought from qd_au around the same time.

        • Warranty is only for 12 mths!
Contact them through ebay, they might be willing to replace yours as well.

        • Thanks

        • +1

My LG G4 bootlooped in March 2017, was purchased in Oct 2015 from qd_au, i.e. failed 17 months after purchase, and they only said it had 12 months warranty in the original ad. Nevertheless when I contacted them through eBay they replaced it with a refurbished unit, and I'm just glad to have a working phone back, and very pleasantly surprised with qd_au.

Also the serial number of the old handset started with 510 (i.e. Oct 2015 manufacture), the replacement is a 610 serial number (i.e. Oct 2016 manufacture), so I would have expected LG to have corrected the bootloop fault in this later model. The bootloop fault is heat-related to do with the soldering coming loose on the main CPU, and the problem only became generally recognized in Feb/March 2016.

So, I would strongly suggest contacting qd_au, through eBay. Find the purchase in your ebay history, and use the "contact seller" item to ask them about it. It took a few emails backwards and forwards (to describe the fault, then answer their questions to ensure it wasn't user error, check I accepted their proposed solution, etc), at all times remaining polite and courteous, then I sent it off to a Sydney address, and got the replacement handset back via DHL courier yesterday. Start to finish, took just over 3 weeks, which is awesome for a warranty that has expired.

LG really need to have a look at qd_au for an example of top-notch customer service, especially since it's their manufacturing fault that caused this problem in the first place.

        • +1

          @nickj:
Same with mine, just received my refurb replacement yesterday. I am really surprise with the qd_au service.
They are willing to swap my bootloop G4 with a similar one and it's already beyond the promised warranty. Thumbs up for qd_au!

      • I had similar craphappento me. Kogan have me dual sim s6 andihaven'tlooked back =)

      • My G3 bootlooped a couple of months ago, just past 24 months of usage. Did the baking in the oven trick and bought some time… it's just now bootlooped once and not restarting…sigh… once I get home I'm going to try and bake it again but I think I'm going to stay away from LG from now on!

  • Is this the same phone?

    • No that one is bigger - 5.5" vs 5.2", among other small spec changes.

    • This one is the 5.2" version

      • Thanks.

  • +1

Great specs for the price- good find OP!

Not a huge fan of the design though- on the black version the silver edge is very noticeable and reminds me of the Galaxy S3-S4 era of silver edges.

As an aside I personally love the design for the Xiaomi 4X- for a budget phone it looks very premium

    • Yep I do like the rugged metal design of the Note3/Note4. This ZF3 is definitely a premium build, it's just a fancy glassy design that is up to taste.

    • 4X has Snapdragon 435 though

      • For a more comparable phone specs wise, the Xiaomi Note 4X also has a Snapdragon 625. Bigger phone at 5.5" though.

There was this recent deal for $200 too. But it uses microUSB vs type-c, no B28 and I think has a worse camera. Much bigger battery than the Zenfone though.

        • -1

          Y not try XiaoMi MAx

          everythings better

  • +1

    Some nice reviews at Amazon

    • +1

Amazon reviews are gamed. And the ratings have a slight inverse relationship with consumer reports reviews which is not gamed.

  • Is this better than the Xiaomi Mi5?

    • If you can live without B28, I would recommend Mi5

    • No sdcard on the Mi5 is a killer for me.

  • Does this phone support Camera2 for saving photos in RAW format?

    • The deluxe version got an update on the 17th to support raw. This one might get an update too.

  • Had this phone, good speed, battery life and camera. Recently just sold it for $300! I've since upgraded to the deluxe version with 820 cpu, the camera it's even better.

  • +6

NO NFC means no Android Pay Asus only put NFC in the Zenfone 3 Deluxe model which is Aus $500
But if members is considering buying from overseas supplier better do it before July 1st as the Government is bringing in 10% GST for all items below AUS$1000 This is not negotiable the Government says every voter in Australia wants this. By this the Government meant Harvey Norman only wants this.

    • +1

No chance they'll get the law up and ready to go by July 1st, which is <3 months away. Even if they do, it'll be an absolute clusterf**k and no-one will be able enforce it. Get ready for all phones to be declared as $50 replica phones

  • Aw… If I hadn't just ordered an S7, I would have given this phone a shot. The Intel CPU in the Zenfone 2 seemed plagued with problems, plus the phablet size was a turnoff. This looks like it ticks all the boxes of good enough specs for a great price.

  • Assuming because the spec says 2G frequencies, this is not 3G Dual SIM right? Like the Moto G4 Plus

    • It is. (4G+3G)

    • I think it is 4G/3G and 2G dual SIM.

      • It's 4G + 3G dual SIM. I had this phone so I'm pretty sure. You can't use dual SIM when you put an sd card in though cause they share the same slot.

        • so just confirming, this phone will work if both slots have say; Optus SIM cards? or which sim cards do/did you have on both?

        • +2

@nb85: Yes, I had both sims on the Optus network and they worked fine. Once I had a Telstra sim as sim 2 and that worked as well (Telstra 2G was turned off already, so that means it was on 3G).

    • 4G/3G active; 2G stand by

  • Any reason to choose this over the Moto G5 Plus? (Assuming one is not in a rush and can wait for the G5 Plus to become available locally at a similar price)

Leaks suggest the plus will cost $399, which is a lot more than what I predicted. Thus makes this deal a lot more attractive to those with a strict budget.

      • That is more than expected, but then that's the RRP. I'd expect to get 20% off pretty soon. Still a tad more.

But above the TRS minimum. With this deal it is not clear whether you get a tax invoice at all (you should if they ship from Australia), and whether that would be the $315 (before 5%) price or not.

    • Well that's it. The old G4 plus is still sitting steady at ~300 and is worse than this phone. The G5 plus is a long time away from this price.

  • +1

I'd happily buy any phone that would allow me a full day's use playing Pokemon Go. As this game requires 4G and Location turned on it would make a good benchmark for realistic battery testing. My S5 hs a 2800mAh battery and Pokemon Go takes it from full to flat inside an hour and a half.

    • +4

No phone will last a "full day" playing Pokemon Go. It uses a lot of power draining features, such as GPS, 4g, screen on time, as well as lots of CPU up time. If you're 2800 mAh battery gets you an hour and a half, what you need is a massive back up power source. A 30,000 mAh back up power source that supports 2.4amp charging (or QC 3.0) might help. Or, you would buy a Yamaha portable generator and a skateboard to push it around on. Try supercheap auto and get a jumper battery pack. It even comes with a handy carry handle…

      • That's the point. Any phone that will do a day of PG will be able to cope with anything. Anyway I've got a Romoss power pack so I'm ok.

      • +3

Inverter generator? Not seen a good deal on one yet.

This is OzBargain. Your car has a battery that's not being used whilst you wander in search of ethereal animals, and 12v USB adapters are a dime a dozen.

Any good deals on skateboards? :D

        • +3

be honest …. you live in South Australia, can't afford a tesla power wall and hope it has enough charge left so you can power the microwave to heat a pie and the nespresso to make a coffee during a blackout.

    • +1

You need a aukey 21 w solar charger. They are amazing during the day but don't work at night. I have this in common with solar panels.

  • how does the battery life compare to the redmi note 4x?
so basically your paying an extra 100 for a better camera as everything else is the same as the $200 note 4x, minus the screen size difference.
and usb c vs micro which makes no difference to me..
