The Z3 lcd + digitizer can be had for around $30-40 from eBay or AliExpress, if you can change it yourself. I have done this for a few phones.

How does this X Performance compare with the Z3, which can be had for $240 now?
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121603979171

Looks like the X Performance has better cameras and a fingerprint reader, but the Z3 has better battery and slightly larger screen.
        http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7949&idPhone2=…

        • Buy the screen for $96 aftermarket, repair guy cost $80 (first repair guy quoted $100) apparently PITA to install. Bought at Sony sale earlier this year for $599, total outlay so far - $599 + $176 + $10 (screen protector) = $785.

Sony charge around $250 for replacement of the screen.

NB - Screen is quite unique and aside from online very hard to find protector/cases for.

        • The cheapest parts + labour quote I found to replace the screen on my Z5 Compact is $150, which is the budget option without the waterproofing.

    • -4

Why would you considering cracked glass on a new phone… you must have cracked a few.

    • +3

      Amex offers complimentary screen replacement

      • wow i didn't know that, time to become amex customer :)

      • +6

Not entirely complimentary. 10% of repair cost is charged as excess.

        • That's still a heck of a deal though. How do I claim it?

        • @elektron: Do you have AMEX Essentials card?

          It's in the T&C.

        • @lostn: No, I have a bank issued AmEx. Would it make a difference?

        • @elektron: Yes.

The free smartphone screen cover comes with Essential and maybe a few other cards that are AMEX issued. I don't think you're covered by the bank.

        • @lostn: Bummer…especially given that this is the top bank issued AmEx in this country.

        • @lostn:
Yep the AMEX Explorer (which is one heck of a card regardless) also includes the same insurance

elektron, if you have a Platinum or Diamond CBA AMEX, it gives you Travel Insurance just for being a cardholder - i.e. You don't have to pay for your travel expenses on the card which a lot of other cards require

        • @illumination: Yes, I have the Diamond AmEx (not for much longer - moving to another bank). I really can't complain as it's been a great card, which gives you 3 points for every dollar spent. Having said that, if it had the smartphone screen insurance it would have saved me $400 a month ago.

    • +4

It's because the digitizer and glass are one part. If you break glass, you have to replace everything. I accidentally broke the screen of an Xperia Z Ultra a couple months after buying. Even after shopping around the repair cost was still more than replacing the phone.

      • Same here,Samsung S7 edge…

    • -1

I dropped it three times, no crack glass yet. Don't you heard of screen protector?

      • screen protector

It's protection against scratching. If you use it to prevent cracking/smashing get prepared to be disappointed.

        • I meant to say, "tempered glass screen protector". Dropped it three times only once I had to replaced the the protector because of a massive crack, no disappointment what so ever. Been using this phone for six months.

        • @boomramada:

          tempered glass screen protector

Still doesn't protect against cracking, sorry. It will crack dropping at the right (or wrong) angle, pretty simple, a (soft-ish) case is still the most effective way to prevent that.

        • +1

          @clse945111:

I've always used a case and glass screen protector and this combination has been fantastic.. highly recommended to any one.. My wife used an absolutely useless case but had tempered glass screen as well (which I have replaced twice already as it got smashed badly ones and cracked another time.. the screen has been saved 100% in both major occurrences so it defiantly does help allot as I'm almost certain the screen would have been a goner if we did not have it on)…

for a few bucks on Ebay defiantly worth the time to grab a case and glass screen case (many glass protectors you can get in a 2 pack as well at times for a $1 extra or so which I've started doing recently so I have one ready to go if something happens).

          Good luck all!

        • +2

Definitely agree, but keep in mind that this phone has a 2.5D front glass, really hard to find a protector that fits well, 95% of the protectors I tried had this halo effect that was really annoying.
I ended up just getting a full coverage one which didn't have halo (because no adhesive in the screen display area), but clarity was slightly compromised due to lack of adhesive as well…just can't win, hate these 2.5D screens…

        • @clse945111:

Could not agree more… My Galaxy Note 4 had the same but I stuck out with a small halo around the edges as it was not bad when the phone was turned on but visible when off mainly… I've also noticed with the Galaxy S7 it's even worse as the screens are getting so close to the 'edge' now and with the 2.5D edge it's a bit of a pain as the halo is larger and to get full coverage the glass protectors also can limit what case you can put on (due to there being not much edge any more)…

Wish manufacturers made 'original' glass protectors and basic cases that have some 'grip' (not these flip out rubbish ones which I find a pain)..

Any way thanks for the comments and wish every one well, just wanted to vouch the glass protectors are fantastic (if you can get one that fits well along with a case.. definitely worth it and highly recommended!)

    • Yeah, one crack on a Sony phone and the whole screen dies, seen two of them end up like this

      • That's only true for their waterproof models, right?

        • +1

No its to do with how the screens are bonded to digitizer. I have always used Xperia's but to admit it's their most annoying design flaw, once cracked the area below crack can't be used unlike on say an iPhone which much as I despise them allows you to keep using the phone even when the glass is shattered.

        • @bloobat: Interestin. I was aware that this is due to the screen being bonded to the digitizer but I always thought that this was a side effect of the waterproof design. Apparently not then.

        • @elektron:
Yeh I thought that do it as it perhaps saves a bit of space so the phone can be thinner but not sure. Either way wish they didn't do it, very annoying.

    Not bad for a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 8200
    ;)

Seriously though, even though Sony firmware has given me heaps of crap, this is a great price for Australian stock. The cameras in Sony phones are great.

    • +1

The comparison shots on GSM arena [comparing to Moto Z and Mate 9] are really noisy, especially in the low light shot. :-/

      • +4

It depends how you use the camera. I found the HDR shots on my Z1 very good. On manual, if you force it to 100 ISO, it can be quite clear. My Z1 did crystal clear 21MP shots in full daylight, providing a number of pixels that other phones couldn't.

        • I've been spoiled by an LG G4, so I am used to taking the shot as soon as I see it, rather than the need to hold for the multiple shots to make up a HDR image, but "Geeky Dev's" Manual camera may be the go with it then. I found that and the LG app were more intuitive than the offering on the Xperia Z. Megapixels count for far less than the lenses and sensors.

It's a nice camera for the price, but the Motorola Z posted earlier has a nicer one, but that's a grey importer from Amazon. I'll admit my Xperia was the second nicest phone to hold and use after the G4, and this offers quite a lot of bang for buck..

        • @terrys:
Have you tried to backup your G4?
I have and it tells me to make space on my mobile to create backup. What a joke. So cheesed about that.
iTunes Sony all just backup to PC.

        • +1

I miss my Xperia Z, the one just before the Z1. Damn that was a nice phone.

        • @WillRay92: I still have mine for my `throw-away' number I use for businesses and people whose calls I am really not concerned about missing.

        • @terrys:

Mine just suddenly died earlier this year. I'm not too sad though, I mean damn the phone was from 2012.

      • dxomark review shows the camera is actually quite good.

        https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-X-Performance-Mo…

    • +2

I have the Compact X and its the same camera and I find it really garbage myself, so many artifacts and blurry. But YMMV. I think the Nexus 5x shoots better pics and thats nearly 2 years old.

  • +1

Does this overheat? I've still got a Sony phone from 4 years ago and it's still going strong but it overheats like crazy. Have heard stories that the Xperia XA gets really hot as well.

    • +4

I have the Xperia X that doesn't even get warm and a family member has an Xperia XA Ultra, which is also fine.

My previous phone was an Xperia Z5 Compact, which got very warm but that was a known issue with the Snapdragon 810.

  • S7 or this is better? Not the price?

    • -5

S7 is more comparable to the XZ, this is more like Samsung A5.

      • +1

If you mean comparable in terms of price then yeah.

But as for performance, this Sony is a last year flagship chip 820 SD (HTC 10, OP3, LG G5) The A series is Samsung's midrange series.

I would say that the LG G5 and this Sony would be a better comparison in price/performance. But of course, LG has it's up and down of boot loops.

        • OK how about the camera? Is S7 still better?

        • +2

          @superforever: Yes.

S7 is a better phone overall and has a better screen, but it also costs more.

        • -6
        • @plmko:

Xperia X is midrange, this is Sony's 2016 flagship.

        • +3

@plmko: It's still double the performance of the Samsung A5 you're comparing it to. MysticalWok is right in that regard. The Exynos 7880 is more comparable to the genuinely midrange Snapdragon 625 vs the last gen flagship SoC Snapdragon 820.

        • +1

          @Kikkoman56:

Chipset means nothing, the pricing of this thing was always one tier down compared to everything.

        • @twister292:

XZ was released in 2016 too.

  • +3

Now that's a fantastic price. I paid $400 for the Xperia X (non-performance / non-waterproof variant) 1-2 months ago from JB and thought that was a good deal. I'm actually liking it better than the Xperia Z5 Compact that it replaced.

  • Would they have this in store too?

    • +2

      Not for long.

  • Need to buy my mum a new phone
    XA or this?

    • +2

XA is midrange, this is a top tier phone.

    • +3

Depends on your budget - we're talking $169 vs $399. Each phone is great b4b (bang for the buck) in it's respective price range, but I suspect the X Performance may be wasted on her if she doesn't game or does some serious snapping instagramming.

  • This and the Moto Z.
A couple good SD820 phones under $400 now.

    • Where is the Moto Z under $400?

    • If you look into China phones, you can get them around the $200 mark. Lenovo Zuk2 for instance.

Some Xiaomi also, but they are a bit dearer.

    • I got my Mi5 for $320 express shipped

  • It is probably time I bought a waterproof phone … mine often falls out of my shirt pocket into the crapper :-(

    • +7

I can save you money here. Dont take the phone into the crapper. Or use another pocket

  • +2

Good phone, but terrible camera (mainly the jpg processing), lackluster manual mode and short battery life. Also no raw support on the camera (for those who know what raw is)… Otherwise good phone.

    • +3

      And no OIS

      • +3

I don't understand why people have neg'ed this comment.

He's right - the X Performance does NOT have OPTICAL image stabilisation.

        http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sony-shows-off-the-benefits-o…

        • Some people don't know what OIS stands for and have mistakenly interpreted this as an Apple fanboi comment.

But how many under $400 phones with similar specs are out there that also have OIS?

    • +1

100% agree. Garbage camera, what I dont get is they make the damn sensors that everyone uses, but they have the worst software / optimizations.

      • Absolutely..that s weird them make almost all the smartphones camera in the world but their are not capable to make a decent algorithm for their phones!

      • +2

Dxomark don't seem to agree, they've listed it as equal 3rd best mobile camera of all time - better than any iPhone. Can the camera really be that bad?
        https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-X-Performance-Mo…

    • That would explain the poor results on GSMarena, but it could possibly be improved by using "Geeky Dev's" Manual camera app, as I commented above, and shooting in JPG + Raw mode then modify in Picassa or Irfanview - or GIMP with add-in.

  • Does this have a notification led?

    • Yes, in the earpiece hole.

    • Yes, so does the XA also.

  • Unusual place to put a volume rocker.

    Manufacturer's Warranty - 1 Year

    Hmm. Only 1 year?

    • +2

Mate, if you looked at warranty information on a lot of products, biggest example being Apple, they all state 1 year warranty. Statutory warranty will always override their claims and you'll get 24 months minimum for example. For even more expensive items it'll be a "reasonable" period. I.e. a $5k macbook is expected to last more than 24 months.

      • +1

Do you have any links to what you are claiming? I would like to see it in writing by the government. All i have seen through research is them talking about whatever's stated on the package, rather than what you are claiming about the 24 months.

        • +1

Sure take a look at it yourself. Apple Limited Warranty vs Statutory Warranty https://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

        • @currentfad: Do you have anything by the ACCC officially? Does this 24 month period cover all products? I've tried looking but haven't found anything. Any help would be much appreciated

        • +1

          @WinstonWithAY: When Optus didn't comply: https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/optus-mobile-provides-…

"Retailers take note – you cannot wipe your hands clean of a faulty product just because the manufacturer's warranty period has ended, particularly when your product is supplied in conjunction with a lock-in contract that is longer than the manufacturer's warranty period," Mr Samuel said.

"The law gives consumers a basic, guaranteed level of protection for goods and services they acquire and such rights and guarantees cannot be excluded or limited by suppliers. In fact, any representation by a supplier that seeks to exclude or limit these rights and guarantees available to consumers is illegal," Mr Samuel said.

All in all, it will always go back to the "Reasonable period" clause for something of significant value.

        • @currentfad: alrighty. no problem then. Thanks for your help

    • +1

I guess it's what you are used to for the volume, I find it fine. It's the same position as other Sony phones.

      • I'm not saying it's a bad spot to put it in, I just haven't seen it there before. I think there are no buttons on the left side, while all of the buttons plus one extra button are on the right side.

        • the extra button is a camera shutter. You can also click it when the screen is off and the camera starts up.
i also use it to turn the alarm off when I dont really want to look at the screen (volume also turns it off but I seem to click the little one easier)

maybe they put the volume there because its also the zoom button for the camera and then its next to the shutter button.

hey, who knows why companies do certain things, why does apple make the phones so big compared with the screen size etc

      Is it all about processor?

    • thats what i have and apart from the processor/storage and RAM its what you pay for, extremely poor software .. not easy to flash and although there are roms out there im yet to find a solid one that id say is to my liking. I'm back on the Chinese nougat and it is horrible at best … lol camera is p*ss poor and i went from a HTC M9 which was pretty bad on the camera department… this was to bide some time before deciding on my next phone … not sure how long i'll last on it unless i find a solid ROM lol

if i had the money id be getting this or the HTC 10 at $599 … lol

      • What about Htc 11?Best camera phone(according dxo camera)boom sound,3d audio recording,new Htc sense.

        • +2

yeh well HTC 11 was the main reason i got an interim phone, my M9 died before 11 was even announced so i wanted to wait and see what HTC were going to do as im a big htc sense fan, 10 prices were still somewhat high with 11 about to be announced so i held off… i'm sure many are happy with there china droids but i'll be switching back to the main brands that's for sure… for a phone to not even be able to tell you that you have a frikin sms most times or display you've missed a call .. now thats pretty pathetic.. lol Runs my games ok though and the U-touch and speedy finger print reader is pretty cool but yeh… i'll be flashing the thing often i think… lol

      • +2

Funny I have a Zuk Z2 and I find LineageOS runs like it was an official stable release, rock solid and there is also Dirty Unicorns which is rock solid and has more features

I also think the camera is pretty decent but not amazing

Battery life is amazing and I have dropped the phone several times with no damage

One of the best phones I have owned

        • Have a link to the OS version your using? yep the battery is great camera is definitely not even close to good sorry to say lol in the end its not easy to get it to a decent stage where an average user can use it.. hence why i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who just wants a phone that works well out of the box…

My hot z5 compact is still running strong

    • If hadn't been quoted $150 to replace the screen (with no waterproofing restored) I'd still be using it too. Considering that I've previously had the microUSB charging port fail, luckily, 2 weeks before the end of warranty - no doubt related to the overheating issues - I was hesitant spending the money to replace the screen, with the risk of the microUSB frying again.
