How the hell does it get the energy from if not from a battery? Or does it mean "battery included"?

Will the water still be drinkable if it passes through this thing?

And who wants to drink or cook with a "green" water? So many questions…

    • +10

it has a built-in dynamo turbine generator inside to power the led

      • -6

        You are kidding me right?

        • +2

No - have this device on bathroom basin. Just operated by water flow. Turn on water flow stronger & shows more light. Very bright.

        • +1

No that's correct. I looked it up too:

          Cute.

        • +3

          Fine we'll keep it simple.
          Wizard.

That light from nowhere without the sun? Wizard.

Water defying gravity and coming out from a faucet with not a rain cloud in sight? Wizard.

          The sce… Wizard.

      Troll much?

      • Hey leave him alone! Just because he's too lazy to click the link but somehow isn't too lazy to ask the question doesn't make him a troll by default.

        • Could be a lazy troll.

        • -2

I clicked on the link, where does it answer any of my questions?

    • +1

      plutonium green is my favourite.

      • I'd rather Smurf blue.

      • +15

        Golden shower.

  • +4

Installed one from last time. Light function fan inside the tap works ok but the airator bit that stops splashing is shit.
    Removed after 2 days.

  • Says $4.99 to me?

    • Sorry just added coupon code.

  • +2

This has to feature high on the Dumb Ideas charts

    • +8

You may be correct, but it's $1 man just go with it

    • +3

      That's what I originally thought but…

Saved me $$! Had a problem of hot water being left on at night in bathroom. No hot water in morning. Problem solved as light shows water still running. Not left on again. Last hot water system was wrecked by leaving tap on - costing nearly $2k to replace! So a bargain for $1😉

Ordered another as I now like them a lot.

      • -1

How does this device cause you to leave the tap on?

        • +2

What infidel meant was that the light from the attachment showed the water was still flowing hence it saved him/her money

        • Hot water left running overnight is an expensive waste. Easier to detect by light showing. As explained below.

      • +4

Sounds like you're quite the visual person. Other people might have noticed water coming out of the tap or heard the sound or maybe noticed the puddle….😉

        • +16

This was a real problem this device helped solve at almost no cost. Ordered this device after long investigation to find a solution. At around this price in another deal, I had little to lose.

I was trained the biggest problem in problem solving is not getting to understand the problem first. People jump to solving the problem without understanding it! Solving the problem from your point of view & experience may not solve a possibly slightly different problem. A difficult problem to solve & probably best done with simple retraining.

          Not everyone can hear!

Family member is almost deaf (plus memory problem) & does not wear his 2 hearing aids when sleeping. When got up to go to toilet at night, he would turn hot water tap fully on instead of off. Water went quietly down drain - never a puddle. Recently installed taps (very easy to turn on & off) worked opposite for hot & cold water (which he never got used to). Never was problem during day.

Put up a reminder note above taps to ensure turned off, but that just made problem worse as he checked taps were off, but just turned fully on. It just increases his anxiety about causing a problem. Installing the light made the checking simple & fun for him. It gave him back some control & dignity. That is the type of solution I aim for.

Otherwise meant so many nights checking tap was off - several times during night🌛 (The running water was only noticeable to my ear when in the ensuite, whereas the light was easy to detect.) No one likes being checked on. Otherwise there was no hot water the next morning😠

No one could offer a solution except installing stop value or solenoid on hot water pipe or paying for new taps to be replaced.

This visual device did the trick at little cost & looked good. He was alerted that tap was on as turning fully on illuminated room. Problem quckly went away. Always best to use all available systems of cues to bring about & reinforce behaviour change.

        • @Infidel: Wow, OK. Well done finding such a cheap solution for that/your special use-case/problem.

        • @samlor:
What? Doesn't every household have that problem😁
          Lucky I love problem solving.

        • @samlor: say the business analysts..

        • Yip, running water is also my go-to indicator that the tap is not turned off.

  • -3
  • So who goes to use a tap with the light off anyway?

    • Adds extra localised light in basin where you are washing. It's quite bright. Found it surprisingly useful. Mainly use as reminder to turn off taps to save $$.

      • +3

Sorry but htf do you forget to turn off a tap in a bathroom/kitchen? What are you doing in your bathroom/kitchen that would require you to leave the tap on?

        • Thinking the very same thing…

        • +5

You mustn't have children or others - who leave taps on! I'm the one who turns the taps off.

Family member with severe memory problem repeatedly forgot to turn hot tap off (turned fully on instead of off) at night. Waking to no hot water was no fun. That wrecked hot water system after a while with $2k replacement cost!

$1 visual cue of blue light on in white basin at night was very effective in stopping that behaviour. Especially as light becomes brighter as tap turned fully on. Made detecting taps left on at night much easier.

So a very useful bargain for my house.

        • +3

          @Infidel:

I thought if you have kids won't they just keep the tap on to see the light?

        • +2

          @humbala:
True. I don't have kids, but I do waste a bit of water playing with the tap💧💦
The fun is turning it on & off to change the brightness of the coloured light😁
But only really effective at night.

The light makes detecting taps left on at night very easy🌛

    • Me!

  • +9

I prefer the model that changes colour based on temperature…. If it's red, kids know not to touch it.

  • +4

With blue, green and red color, random delivery.

Well that's just stupid. Why not have blue for cold and red for hot, then a mix of both for lukewarm?

    • +3

Because having multiple LEDs that and a temp sensor and a circuit that can switch between the colors (or moderate their intensity) would cost extra.

They exist, but not at this price point. Yet.

      • Mine was $4 from memory

        • Yep I bought one on ebay for $2.20

        • @deejaygrub:

so this at $1 , not so much of a deal then.

        • @phunkydude: We are talking about the one with temperature sensor. Mine has flashing red light for hot, green for warm and blue for cool. This $1 one is for a random led colour.

        • @deejaygrub:

yea, i mean this at $1 not really a good deal considering you can get temp. color at $1.20 more.

        • @phunkydude: sorry yes. Misunderstood this one. I think the temperature one is more worth it…

  • I couldn't get this to fit on any of my taps - not even close! :(

  • This is getting ridiculous. Death by a thousand cuts (or small purchases :-)

  • +1

I hope it's food grade plastic and can handle hot water

    • -1

      They are chrome plated ABS.

Main con is that they give u a headache (flash fast under full flow) and make the tap hook down lower so can be painful if the tap is not well elevated above the sink enough (many are quite low).

I have one in the laundry as it's a dark corner: If only I could get it to stop flashing and changing colour! It makes us feel epiliptic if we go and fill up a dish at night…

      • Could always try the hack job and add a capacitor to it lol

  • Haha can't purchase, zapals keeps replacing it in my cart with "What Do You Meme Party Card Game for Adults - 270 Cards", tried on two devices, fate has spoken.

  • Does this meet Australian Standards?? LOL reminds me to check quality of diy reno before buying a flipped house…

  • The red one would be great for recreating one of the 10 plagues e.g
    https://youtu.be/OYeox3LLQ08

But I've had really bad luck with faucet replacements in the past, especially if the water pressure builds up. I always seem to ruin the seal and water squirts everywhere.

  • Can I control it with a smartphone app?

    • +8

No. This is the mind-controlled model.

  • was there an option to choose the colour?

  • Honestly, no idea what group of people would fancy this, it's just trivial novelty

These things are notorious for rusting. Lots of reviews of similar cheap products have mentioned the batteries running out, rusting internally - would you like some battery acids and rust in your tap water?

    Landfill.

    • +1

+1 for this. Have used one previously, internals all corroded and add a nice rusty flavour/colour to your water. Would not recommend.

      • That's ok, I get that even without it :)

        • +1

I thought that was an SA thing, not WA thing.

    • +1

Um, these don't use batteries as discussed at start of deal!!
      You read the wrong reviews.

    • +1

would you like some battery acids and rust in your tap water?😱 Wrong!
You've read reviews for a very different battery powered unit. There is no indication there is an issue with this no battery plastic model.

Have been using this non-battery model for months without any issues - quite enjoyable.
(But I choose to only use it on bathroom taps , where water is not drunk much or used in food preparation, just in case plastics leach a very small amount of any harmful substance into flowing water. However that's a low risk. Besides the kitchen is too well lit to appreciate the light from the tap😉)

You already have rust in your tap water! Rust occurs naturally so has probably always been in water that was drunk. Plus there are a lot of rusting pipes in the water supply network. There is iron almost everywhere, but iron deficiency is still a problem for some.

First to pop up in search (from US)
      http://www.berkeleywellness.com/healthy-eating/food-safety/a…
the limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for iron in drinking water are based on aesthetics (taste, odor, color), not safety concerns.

This is a general question about how people use Cashback. If you click on the Cashback button, it takes you to the cashback page, and then to the home page of the site (Zapals in this case). There is no link to the OzB deal you were looking at.

Not keen on having that device housing contaminate the water with whatever that might rub off it during prolong use.

    • -1

Doubt it's any worse than what's already coming through your pipes

  • +1

Hmm… Couple years ago, I got one of these. Fits most taps it said - it lied! Can't find a tap in Australia it fits, to narrow. Can anyone confirm the size?

    • -1

I've got this one fitted to tap. No problems.

    • -1

Probably because the thread doesn't pass any relevant local standards.

  • -1

Whilst it looks cool always be very careful purchasing plumbing or electrical items overseas, many of them do not comply with Australian standards.

This product for example is completely illegal to install in australia as it does not comply with Australian Standards, any person or plumber that installs this can be liable for hefty fines.

Also worth noting if a non-certified product fails and there is any water damage you may struggle to make an insurance claim.

Source: I am a plumber, who has seen shit like this fail time after time.

    more info: https://www.abcb.gov.au/Product-Certification/WaterMark-Cert…

    edit: added link

    • OK, I'll bite….to me this seems to be alarmist and completely over the top.

Aside from a failure of the item itself, which is probably entirely possible, what is the danger(s) that you are referring to here?

      • -1

For this item I agree it may be, however that product can or may leach higher levels of metals than what is allowed into the water, I'd imagine at worst causing sickness.

I am someone that is always skeptical of alarmist views, however in plumbing I have seen first hand water damage due to a failed product that has caused thousands and thousands of damage and the insurance company has walked away as it wasn't a product that complied with australian standards.

Obviously electrical is more serious this article for instance http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/faulty-usb-phone-charger-blamed-fo…

        • -1

          Dear Alarmist,
Have you looked at this basic piece of plastic pipe & amtal sieve that screws on in place existing similar end of tap?

Is there an Australian Standard covering the screw on ends of taps? You only linked to a complex certification system.

How would this screw on accessory caused thousands and thousands of damage? There is only water running through it when tap is turned on. Unlikely tap would be left unattended long enough for just about any possibility of damage - more than not having it installed.

You just turn the tap off & remove it is an issue arises.

may leach higher levels of metals than what is allowed into the water, I'd imagine at worst causing sickness.

As for this metal contamination of water… I've got this tiny device in my hand. The main components are plastic. It is installed on ensuite basin tap used for washing & cleaning teeth. I can't see how the small amount of water passing through this device & far smaller amount entering my body is of much concern. And I've conducted water quality analysis at Uni, but claim no specialist knowledge. Happy to read your proof of your claims.

Very very unlikely to cause sickness as you suggest is possible. Unwise to claim specialist knowledge & make such alarmist claims with evidence.

        • -1

@Infidel: oh sorry didn't realise you have conducted water quality analysis at university level, nevermind then your an expert on the matter.

"Is there an Australian Standard covering the screw on ends of taps?" Yes, yes there is. Normally referred to as the thread though…..

So what we ignore the standards set by the Watermark and the like to keep australian's safe and dodgey products from entering australia and potentially causing harm, we will all ask you in future for your opinion instead?

The whole reason standards exists in the first place mate is so everyone doesn't need specialist knowledge, and the people with that specialist knowledge require the product to pass the australian standards or it is illegal to be installed here.

Sure this might not cause harm but you don't know that at all, all I know is that it is illegal to be installed in australia as it is has not gone through the appropriate channels and testing to be installed in australia.

You can head to this website https://infostore.saiglobal.com/en-au/Search/Standard/?searc… to find the relevant standards and do your own testing or just listen to the people who know what they are talking about.

"Very very unlikely to cause sickness as you suggest is possible. Unwise to claim specialist knowledge & make such alarmist claims with evidence." So I shouldn't back up my claims with evidence?

  • Just found exhaling into this product lights it up😱
    Ok it's late & I'm tired.

Who needs a torch? Could walk around in dark blowing in these… Or insert into balloons… Or… The possibilities are almost endless😁
