Same price at HN also, only store not coming to the party is TGG.

Also $128 at HN if you don't have a JB Hi-Fi store near you. Don't forget about the CR 5% discount on Woolworths eGift cards. Use this to purchase JB gift cards at Woolies and then pay with these in-store to purchase the Google Home.

I never bought anything from HN until the Shipster trial, now I can get free same day delivery.
      pretty cool.

    • I thought you weren't allowed to buy gift cards with gift cards

      • That's the issue to buy Same GCs. You can buy JB ones and get a bonus fuel voucher

      • Yes you can with the eGift cards, however there is an even better way to save as mentioned below which I didn't notice before.

  • Why did I buy from Shopmonk last month :( same price but US vs AU

    • What's the difference?

      • Warranty and plug

        • The rediculously huge au wall plug

    • Please hand in your OzBargain license at the nearest patrol station.

Just note, it takes upwards of 10 days, mostly be 4-5 though for the coupon to come through so the sale may be over by then. It probably won't be, but it should be noted just in case it ends prematurely.

What are you saying, go to a JB store and buy a $100 Physical JB Gift Card. The $10 Gift voucher will be generated with the receipt. Walk around the in the store for 5-10 min, Grab a google Home and go back and pay $100 through the Gift Card, $10 through the voucher and rest $19 via other cash/card. That way you pay only $119 of cold hard cash :D

        • Ohh can it be in-store as well and generated instantly? That's my bad! From reading that deal it looked like it was online and took a few days, sorry!

        • +1

You have to buy the $100 gift card online, and you will be emailed the $10 voucher within 10 days, but it has been reported by other ozbargainers to take 4-5 days.

        • go to a JB store and buy a $100 Physical JB Gift Card. The $10 Gift voucher will be generated with the receipt

invoice pics? just for the future reference for ozbargainers. If The $10 Gift voucher will be generated with the receipt, its going to be the best deal atm as it will cost 119 instead of 121.60 currently at officeworks.

    • That would be $119 :P

  • where is cheepwun?

Assuming you don't have your house wired up so you can control the lights etc with it, does this thing actually do anything that you can't just do with the Google Assistant on your phone?

    • +2

Play music without needing to connect your phone via Bluetooth to a speaker.

      • -3

Only if you're invested in GPM.

        • Only if you're invested in GPM.

Works with Spotify as well (add the Spotify credentials into the Home app). You can then ask Google Home to play 'easy listening' or 'morning tunes' and it will pick an appropriate playlist.

We are an Apple household and had Apple Music but we'll probably move over to Spotify.

does this thing actually do anything that you can't just do with the Google Assistant on your phone?

Without needing the phone, our kids enjoy asking it to make animal sounds or translating English into different languages.

        • The free tier of Spotify if handy for generic playlists (e.g. "OK Google, play top 40" or "play classical music") if you want to fill the room with some background music. Also, I recently learnt that any station that's on iHeartRadio can be streamed which is nice.

        • +4

@Stix: Our kids play trivia and ask random facts. I think it is worth every cent

        • @pacsman: Agreed, we see if the kids can beat Google at maths questions. :)

We need to keep defeating the machines otherwise the rise of Skynet will begin.

I don't have wireless lighting and I don't need to play my music when I walk from bedroom to living room to kitchen with bluetooth speakers in each room following me and playing the music, so this Google Home is not very useful for me.

      • +5

Thanks for your input, I will now take your lead and post in every single deal why I may or may not find the product useful.

        • -1

Geez, sorry if I have offended you. I am just replying to AngusD. I am not implying this device is useless for everybody.

        • @edfoo: You didn't mention once any benefits over the app on your phone. Instead you just said you don't have wireless lighting and you don't need to play music - see now?

        • @OnlinePred: The benefits have already been mentioned by other people here and in another deal.

      • do you have like a Sonos setup or something at home?

    • The Google Home offers a greater mic range and can also pick up your voice in slightly noisy environments. The Google Home can also find your lost phone for you which you can't do from your phone since you don't know where it is. The Google Home also offers the ability to act as a good bluetooth speaker which enhances many features such as the party games etc. Also the loudness and quality of the speaker offers better clarity of feedback after asking questions, especially if you are far away from the device. Also the Google Home can deal with multiple users, while your phone cannot.

Firstly, you don't have to 'wire up' a house for home automation. Anything but, they are generally wireless, either Zsomething or straight Wifi.

If you are getting this a christmas present, then I'd recommend getting either a light or main switch so you can have it doing some useful stuff. For instance a light in the living/theatre room that you can then control by voice is useful for dimming the lights when watching a movie.

"Hey Google, set lights to 10%"

Second, you can connect up to stream music, movies, etc. - Spotify free works and if you have a Netflix sub, that works too (to chromecast)

"Hey Google, play some Gregorian Chant"

Third, you can connect to calendars, weather news sources, etc. to get a personalised sitrep in the morning.

      "Hey Google, good morning"

Fourth, you can get it do useful lookups for you on things like times, currency, calculations, facts, etc.

"Hey Google, what is 67 american dollars in australian dollars"

Fifth, you can get it to do more involved lookups, like finding flights and prices by voice

"Hey Google, how much is a flight to Adelaide"

Sixth, you can set reminders and timers (particularly useful in cooking)

"Hey Google, set timer for 10 minutes"

So basically some of it is the same as on your phone, but without the hassle of having your phone with you all the time. That makes it more practical for using to do things whilst you are doing other things. Worth the money (at least the mini is, the bigger one is only really if you want it to be a decent quality speaker too).

      • The mini we have in the kitchen has been great. Can read back recipes to us in steps, convert measurements on the fly, play music while washing the dishes. Saves getting the recipe book or phone dirty when your hands are covered in flour.

  • think David Jones will be able to price match this? I have a DJ gift card that I would like to use.

      Yes they would.

i got this, i didn't even know it was a thing. i was shocked and impressed when the courier rocked up at my door at 1pm with my google home!

    • Missed the tickbox, so gotta wait until tomorrow :(

  • Amazon doesn't even sell the echo on the au site. GH is a real hit

  • Can anyone comment on the sound quality?

Specifically compared to a UE Boom

  • Hi ~ I'm an absolute Luddite. Is GH difficult to install? Say I wanted to play music in 4 seperate rooms - what else would I need to purchase to set it up? Then what if I wanted it to play in only 2 of those rooms at a time?, or different music in those rooms? Would I need to pay a techno? (or rent a 15 year-old-geek?) ~ thanks in advance

    • Installation : Plug it in, and using the app on a phone or tablet go through the instructions to connect it to the wifi, and your accounts.

Playing music tends to focus on music streaming, so you'd need a compatible one of those.

For separate rooms you'd need separate devices. Either these, or a chromecast audio connected to a suitable amp if you have a decent setup.

Worth noting that playing music on them is like using a Thermomix to make scrambled eggs. It'll work, but it's missing out on most of the good stuff.
