Coupon UNWRAP5 gets an additional 5GB on the $32 plan

So become 25 or it was 15 now 20?

    • 20GB. Standard $40 plan is 10GB. There is a bonus 5GB without code, then the code gives an extra 5GB on top of that, which gives the "10GB bonus data" mentioned on the plans page

Damn, I signed up for the $32 15GB 12 month plan a few weeks ago, now this comes up :/

    • maybe good-will will get them to sign u up to the new one?

    • Same. I'm just over a couple of months on the $32/15GB deal.

My only worry is they won't upgrade people out of good will because I reckon they would've signed up a fair few on that plan over the last year.

Might try anyway though. Been with them for a while so might hope for a rep that rewards customer loyalty even though most companies overall don't.

      • Hi everyone, Me and my wife did signed up $32/15GB for a month ago too and I just finished online live chat with Virgin mobile members, they are not allowing to make any changes of our contract account but they can upgrade an extra 5Gb datas from our account from 15Gb up to 20Gb. So now we are on $32/20GB plan. So happy.

        • Same here, signed up for the 15GB deal last week. Mentioned the new promo on live chat, the rep was happy to add extra 5GB on the plan, reflected on My Account almost straightaway.

        • @socceroo: Cool thanks guys. I'll give Online Chat a whirl now then!

Update: the person I got said no, the new customers crap. Guess I'll just try again an hour later :P

  • Can anyone offer their experience with Virgin mobile? I'm thinking about leaving TPG, my experience with them has been terrible.

    • If you have no issues with Optus, then you shouldn't with this.

      • Do they have full optus network access ? (Eg boost for Telstra …)

    • +1

It's hard to find anyone worse than TPG so leave, you will only be better off :)

    • -3

Can anyone offer their experience with Virgin mobile?

Tightarse wouldn't risk being with anyone but Virgin.

    • +1

They were fine when I was with them for a few years (5+). Only switched because they couldn't offer competitive deals with handsets I wanted.

Having said that, now that I'm with Telstra, I can understand the fuss about their network. It really is better…

      • But remember, this is 20gig for $32, Telstra is how much for what data. It's not just the network.

        • +1

What good is 20GB if you can't even use it properly on what seems like a more congested/slower network?

Telstra has had some competitive deals with their BYO plans - albeit you pay a slight premium, but don't discount the quality of a good network.

    • +1

I’ve been with them 3 or so years, customer service has been appalling in my experience but the service and deals have been good and they tend to honour goodwill. Planning on switching to Optus for student discount when my plan runs out.

    • Reception is very good with their Optus network.
      Data&Int Mins roll-over is awesome.
Web service is nice and clear.
You can transfer data between two virgin accounts which is very helpful from time to time as my wife is also with Virgin.
I had an issue with my late payment once due to card expiry and their online CS team is very responsive.

I kinda regret switching to Jeenee for their $30/18G/12 Months deal and if I knew this I would stay with Virgin. Jeenee is also on Optus but reception is much worse than Virgin. e.g. Virgin has 4G in my company toilet whereas Jeenee doesn't

So, in general, I'd like to recommend them

    • +1

I'm not sure if this is just me - but i've heard at least one other person mention it.

sometimes the data is just incredibly slow/shit when its congested. Try Wynyard Station at peak hour in the evenings, I literally can't get any data which is really annoying. overall kind of crappy reception but I haven't tried Telstra (will be switching over) and I'll see if theres any difference

    • I've had them for a few years now and I can't wait for my plan to finish so I can jump ship… I work all over Sydney and have also a work phone from Telstra. The telstra phone gets reception everywhere and the 4GX speed is ridiculously higher than what I get on the Optus/Virgin network. From a reception POV, telstra is by far the better service but my colleague has Vodafone and his internet speeds are actually even higher then what I get on the 4GX most of the time!!

But I swore off Vodafone a few years ago so I'm praying Telstra will offer a good plan with a decent data plan at some stage!

The prepaid JB Hifi Telstra plan is still going - $49 a month, 20 GB + a $200 gift card. 12 month contract, full Telstra network. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342509
Or if you need a new phone go the Telstra Friends and Family plan, $59 a month, 15gb (though myself and many others have got 20gb through online chat), comes with a new s8 or I think Pixel 2 now (or some older iPhones), 24 month contract. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342769

Quick warning - lots of people have been trying to combine these, e.g. signing up for the JB prepaid plan to get the gift card, then switching to the Friends and Family plan for the phone. Got told in JB yesterday that while this is possible, Telstra will then apply a $200 charge to the first bill to wipe out the gift card (they have 'Fair Use' policy which apparently makes this ok).

        • Thanks heaps! Unfortunately my current plan still has a few months left :/

    • Had Virgin over the past 1.5 years until recently - no issues at all.

  • Only for new customers?

  • Good deal.

  • +1

Usually online promo's for Virgin Mobile can be applied to existing customers through the online chat or over the phone.
I plan on giving it a shot tomorrow, although I've never had problems with obtaining online deals on my existing plan. Just have to restart the 12 months

    • That is correct. I have a couple months left on my current Virgin 12mth sim and contacted them via Twitter about recontracting to this. No problems if I wish just have to pay a break fee for current plan, which is about $30, if I decide to

      • If you're upgrading or staying at the same price point, there is usually no need to pay the contract break fee. You have a couple of months left, I'm sure they'll be happy to waive it

        • I thought the same but not for me. Maybe for a 24mth plan they will waive the fee but not for a 12mth sim plan.

        • Correct. I had to pay a fee of ~$80 to go to $32 plan from my $40 plan, since I had like 8 more months on my previous plan.

  • +3

Good deal. Signed up with Vodafone the other day for 20GB a month for $35 but prefer them as I find their global roaming great for $5 a day. If that’s not important this virgin mobile deal is a steal!

    • Exactly the same with me

      • Some have gotten the Vodafone deal for $31 via the chat option. Check the last comments from that deal. An absolute bargain.

        • Likely too late since I've already signed up. I'm in the process of trying to get a student discount applied though.

        • Oh and don’t forget if you know a friend who is with Vodafone and you sign up to a new plan you both can get $25 credit on both accounts. I did this after signing up. More here: https://vha.secure.force.com/refer?cid=cbu:post:mob:cus:sms:…

    • I have a chat with Vodafone via online chat and they offer me the same value but at $33 per month. However I reckon Kogan large or xl plan paid over yearly is a better bargain..

  • +1

Virgin have the worst customer support ever. -1 from me

    • Not only that the coverage is just as worst

      • But it is Optus coverage which is good?

        • +2

Pay no attention. Every carrier is hopeless for someone, but great for others.

    • Have had no issues with their support. Although I do all my contact via Twitter which have found great.

  • Damn I'm locked into the rest of my contract on Virgin for 12 more months….. $380 to leave, but this plan is tempting.

  • I don't recommend joining them. I had bad experiences.

  • EDIT: Disregard my comment, just read through the Virgin site (duh!) and offer is until 31/01/18. So I'll hold out until then.

Would I be correct in guessing that once purchased, you can't delay the activation of the SIM on this offer?
Signed up last year with a Vaya promo (12 month, pre-paid) but it doesn't run out until Feb. This one appears to be an actual 12 month contract, as opposed to my Vaya one.
Would like to use up the last 2 months if possible, though this deal is tempting, especially with the $40 cash back.

  • Vodafone have second service discount or student discount which makes the 35 sim only down to 31 with 20gb

    • Some have gotten it for $31 as their only account via Voda retentions.

  • why not pay a bit extra to get 59 deal and offset the handset? unlimited streaming of Netflix and Stan too with Optus

  • +1

Bugger. I'm on $50 (Minus $5 velocity discount) for only 18gb :(. Has any existing user tried to downgrade or keep on same base plan but get new benefits, through support?

  • UNWRAP10 doesn't work for me and Unwrap5 doesn't work on the $30 or $35 plans.

    • +1

Correct. UNWRAP5 only works on the $40 plan, and UNWRAP10 only works on the $50 plan (both pre 20% discount).

  • +1

The UNWRAP10 doesnt work when I select the $40 plan

    • +1

Correct. Only works on the $50 plan, which reduces to $40 with their 20% discount.

      • Sorry I'm dumb, didn't see the arrow to choose other plans. Thanks for that

  • What's this about under the 'Music Bonus' tab: "Stream until 01/03/18 and up to 512kbps."

    Do they mean:

    • All three free music is metered again after that date?
    • Only iHeart will be?
    • All 3 will reduce to a lower bitrate?
    • Only iHeart will reduce in bitrate?
    • The first one (unless the offer is extended)

      • Really? That's slack. I hate when businesses do things like that. What's the point - get used to using it only to lose it. (I know what their point is, profit by stealth via the fine print.)

        • Phoned them and asked. It's first one. Said they may extend it, have done so before, but can't guarantee they will.

  • +3

You can sign up for kogan mobile, which is actually cheaper for more data.
The extra large option is 23gb +unlimited talk and text within australia. If you chose the 365 day plan and pay upfront it costs 315.10 (comes out to around $26 a month)

    https://www.koganmobile.com.au/plans/mobile/

  • Impressive deal, seems like data is gradually getting cheaper across the board, Thanks for Sharing

  • +1

great poat ta,but i have already signed up for the voda deal couple days ago. voda's $5 intetnatuonal roaming is a no brainer, wish all tele companies do the same.

    • You need to get yourself a 3 mobile UK sim! ;)

  • -1

How about Kogan Mobile, they are with Vodafone 4G+ network. Are they any good? Currently I’m with Virgin mobile, Virgin Mobile use to be a good and cheaper network for me to use. But now, seems like others are getting way more better than Virgin Mobile, Since Optus acquired Virgin Mobile, it going downwards for their competitive prices.

My current contract ending soon, and I’m going to pay off the contract then port my number to the Kogan Mobile. few days ago, Kogan Mobile increased their data pack for each plan, for the XL 365 days plan you can get 23GB/month for $315.1, it’s apprx $26/month. Before was 16GB/month

    • +1

No-one can answer, unless they live next door to you. I have both Optus and Vodafone signal. Vodafone is faster than Optus - here. But if I drive west of the coast about 30 minutes, first Vodafone signal disappears, then Optus, and finally Telstra drops out as well. Your best guesstimate is to ask your neighbours, and/or post where you live on here/Whirlpool and ask.

  • good, but cant beat the $51 for $117GB form optus….. yes you had to buy an ipad with it too but i wanted one ;-)

    • +3

I was only just wondering if you got that Optus deal with the iPad or not.

    • What deal was that?

      • The Optus one with an ipad.

        • yep with the ipad,. .it worked out well for me as i really wanted an ipad pro in anyevent,.. i erad alot and my ipad 3 is too heavy and slow..

  • So what's happened with me is that I've chatted to a rep online and they've told me that the code is for new customers, but already being on the previous $32 plan, they topped my data up to 20GB without having to renew the plan. Obviously YMMV but I always suggest giving it a go

  • the code works for plan upgrade as well?

  • +1

Just FYI for those currently on a plan with Virgin… YMMV!!!

I recontracted in Oct to a $40 per month for 15GB with a credit of $10 per month to match/beat Optus deal at the time. So $30 per month for 15GB.

This morning I engaged with Virgin Live Chat and with a bit of persuading, I managed the following…

    • 20% off $40 per month with 15GB+5GB bonus+5GB extra UPWRAP5 promo code (25GB total), for the life of the plan until changed or cancelled.

To be fair, I misread the OP regarding the amount of data. In hindsight I now realise it should be 20GB, not 25GB. Not complaining though =D

Also I continued to insist that I was "upgrading" given that I was paying $2 less to what the current offer is now, so technically "upgrading".

Hope this post helps fellow members with existing contract!

    • thats crazy. will give it a try… new customer though

  • I signed up to their previous $45 deal. I can tell you they will not budge on you paying out the rest of your current plan. I tried four different chat sessions and each one that said the same thing. I even did the whole I will leave cos your data is slow routine and it didn’t work

    • That sounds odd… It's quite easy to break their mobile broadband contract (unless I misunderstood their conditions): you have to pay the remaining pro-rata value of any device, plus the last month of usage.

  • Hi Op. can you please confirm the deal? I spoke to one online chat rep who said that the deal is meant to be 10GB and if you enter the promo you get 15GB in total. Thanks

  • im on a $40 optus plan with 3 months to go.

can i port to a virgin plan like this even if they use the same network? i assume i'll have to pay an EEF?

  • Hi guys. I still get $40/plan after applied the code. Should it be $32 or did I missing something? Thanks in advance

    • +1

Discount will be applied on your bill

      • +1

        Thank you

  • Has anyone had any luck in getting Optus to match this price for their equivalent $40 a month plan?

  • Was with Virgin for years up until last week. Coverage was generally good, though could be a bit flaky at times for both voice and data. When it worked it was generally extremely fast (40-50mbps in and around central Melbourne). Only changed to Telstra so I could get better coverage in regional areas. Early days on Telstra but I've actually found data significantly slower so far than with Virgin…

Oh yeah and customer service was ok, up until I actually had a problem one time and then it sucked.

  • Does anyone know if I am with Virgin currently, I cancel the contract and get a new contract. Will I be eligible for cashrewards?

    • Cashback is paid on postpaid contracts and/or 12 month SIM only plans, and available to new Virgin Mobile customers only.

      • Yes, I understand the first bit. However what constitutes new Virgin Mobile Customers? If I cancel my contract and a sign a new one, does that mean a new customer? Or only a new contract but existing customer?

        Thanks

        • I'd say you'd have to sign up with a new phone number.

  • Hey guys, was wondering where I place the coupon code in? Not familiar with these kind of transactions.

  • Looks like Virgin simplified the deal: bonus data is now included upfront without a promo code ($40=20GB, $50=28GB, $60=45GB).
20% discount still applies across the board ($40 plan for $32, etc)

  • Just signed up in store, $32 monthly fee, 20GB, $500 international call credit. The last part is different to online so might be worth getting in store.

    • Which store did you get your $500 international calls deal? I’m thinking to go if it’s in Melbourne.

      • This was in Sydney store but the deal came up on their system without any haggling so should be country wide.

  • +2

Hey guys, i was reading the fine print and you can get extra 500mb data using this code "WHISTLEOUT".

"WhistleOut Exclusive 500MB Bonus: sign up by 31 January 2018 to a new contracted $30, $35, $40, $50 or $60 12mth SIM Plan and enter coupon code "WHISTLEOUT" and you will receive an additional 500MB bonus on top of your standard monthly data allowance (to use in Oz) until you cancel or change plans. For new and upgrading customers only. Fair Use Policy applies."
