I never have enough Raspberry Pi's.

  • +1

    a Pi for everything

  • How is the Chinese version different from the UK version?

    • +5

It's not. To keep up with demand some are made in China.

      • +4

FWIW mine ordered from Element14 (who are an official distributor) was a made in China version.

    • -1

      Visual comparison (not many differences)
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP4qoVnhAEY

      • your link is for pi old model. not pi 3.

  • That's a good price, thank you for the post, Codify.

I really need to look into doing more with these.

  • What does Chinese version mean?

    • +10

Instead of operating on 1's and 0's, it works on 0's and 1's….

      • +1

I wonder how the Irish one would operate?

        • +1

          Can be powered by potatoes

        • They write in the same direction as us😐

        • +1

@terrys: but don't forget that the 1st and 0s are upside down because we're in the southern hemisphere

    • Some models were/are made in the UK.

  • Read comments above: made in China.

    • +5

i own both UK and China version ….. same …. made under license due to demand.

Thanks OP, looking forward to getting homeassistant up and running with all the Xiaomi gear I've been accumulating over the past few months

    • Do you mind giving a pointer why Raspberry Pi and not any PC running Windows for Xiaomi? I was looking as to how to voice command Mi Robot Vac, but it requires Raspberry Pi. Is it because Linux is a must?

      • I actually have no idea why a Pi is needed, but my friend has a bunch of Xiaomi and Google home gear running with Hass and he is going to help me set it up/teach me how to use it. I've actually got it installed and running on my WHS server but I have no idea what I'm doing.

        • Much easier to run home assistant on a raspberry pi and use HASS.IO doing it another way will require learning to use SSH commandlines which makes it alot harder. You'll also get more issues and alot less support.

        • @Vietsoldier: apology in advance for this dumb question, so the objective to create this Raspberry Pi and equipped with home assistance is to replicate the functionality of Google Home (Assistance)?

I quickly browse the demo of home assistance, so it shows say Living Room and you can switch the lights off or dim it, but say for example you use Yeelights and you have app installed on your Android, can you not already control this via Yeelight app?

        • +1

@tempura: Home Assistant works as central hub for your internet enabled devices. This is is especially useful for times when your Google home cannot control devices from the lesser common brands, it will allow home assistant to be a gateway and allow you google home to control those devices.

For more advanced use cases, home assistant allows you to create any type of automation you'd like (but you'll need to invest the time to configure and test these yourself). For example: turn on the house lights when you phone is approaching home at night. Send a notification to your speakers to inform you someone is at your front door (via motion detection). Turn off the heater and lights when you leave home. Basically it allows you to automate any action you can manually do your devices, if you're willing to create rules/scripts for automation.

Linux is a must. You can use a windows pc, but it will require a virtual machine to run the Linux OS
        https://home-assistant.io/hassio/installation/

Some reasons to use the pi:
it has really low power consumption for something that is always on.
There is a simple method for setting up Hass on sd card for the pi.
You have a bloated OS full of stuff you don’t need running 24x7

      • the pi is low power consumption and cheaper than some of the entry level intel options which are about the $120 mark.

        • Definitely don't intend to fork out more money for Intel NUC hence was thinking to just utilise current Windows PC, but it appears that this is not achievable.

So this Pi will work hand in hand with Google Home (Assistance)? In the example of Voice Commanding Xiaomi Mi Robot Vac, so when you command via Google Home 'Hey Google, Release the Hound' it will then talk to Pi via IFTTT, which then IFTTT will trigger the Mi Vac? Am just trying to understand the nutshell of Google Home, Raspberry Pi & Xiaomi Mi Robot VAC.

        • @tempura:

          see snakeoils blog:
          https://www.snakeoil-os.net/news/home-automation/how-to-cont…

He has specific instructions - this page is the most relevant regarding home assistant and PC/pi

        • @Wibbleman: yes saw this few times, was thinking and hoping if I can get away without having to purchase Raspberry Pi

        • +1

          @tempura:
Sure you can you just need to run a VM. So you can use windows on a PC with a virtual machine running linux.
either vmware or oracle virtual box
heres how to build the hass VM once created:
          https://home-assistant.io/blog/2017/11/29/hassio-virtual-mac…

  • Code wouldn't work for me

  • After adding the code in the cart the price went up to 49.05. What gives with that?

    • Limited to first 30 stock

      • +1

Then it would say expired. But it added to the price of the item.

        • +1

With all these sites, if you enter an expired code, the price reverts to their 'RRP' which is normally higher than the listed price as they always need to be able to say their products are on sale.

        • +1

@xev: Well that makes complete sense lol

        • @xev: Now it says expired. I think you were mistaken before with your advice. It does say expired when the code has been used up. There was something else happening with that price thing that I still haven’t worked out.

        • They can also bump you up to a higher cost shipping method

  • The price in the cart went up to $49.05 for me too but then further down under the coupon code it says fixed price code and $26.99 is the total.

    • So does that mean if I continue in the checkout flow the price will be 26.99?

      • My price ended up being around 34, and I paid extra for registered shipping, so AU$37.23 all up here.

      • Mine was. That’s US$26.99, will hit my card around $35 ish

  • Cheers. Not sure what to do with it (I've already modded my snes mini and filled the thing with games) but I've been thinking of ordering a Pi for ages.

  • +1

    All codes used up. Expired

  • What do most people use this for? I did a quick skim of the raspberry pi website and didn't entirely understand. Great f someone could give me a simple rundown with some examples.

    Thanks in advance!

    • +3

Most people use them for media streaming, making a little videogame emulation setup, backup file storage server. There are the occasional people who do really neat things with these (one guy turned a full length mirror into a smart display that shows the weather).

Run home assistant for our Xiaomi products

After sitting around in a cupboard for years, my RasPi 2B now does Bittorrent/Usenet over VPN, runs ARIA2 as a general downloader (FTP, HTTP, BitTorrent), captures streaming video from a site, and runs Pi-Hole as an adblocking DNS server for the rest of the LAN … basically everything a standalone PC used to do using a 20th of the power.

    • +3

Home assistant for RM infrared, plus some temperature sensors and also do a speed test periodically to gauge just how sh*t my nbn is.

    • +2

For my RPi2B, as they use a microSD card for the system drive, I have two cards with different configs (run at different times).
      Card 1: File downloader, etc
      Card 2: Web development

I'm using mine to make a curtain opener. Opens/closes automatically and stays closed to keep the heat out on hot days.

Also have plans to use one to make a custom remote for the aircon. I'd like to be able turn it on over the internet so I can come home to a cool house without needing to leave it on 24/7.

Something to unlock and open the back gate wirelessly would be nice too.

1, long term photo time lapse project, setup watching the construction of a new home, 1 photo per 10mins, 12 hrs per day, 7 days per week. Has been running for 7 months so far.

2, automatic fish feeder, setup on a small aquaponics 600L system, feeding fish at intervals every morning and afternoon, Has temperature sensors also for logging air and water temps, and has low feed indicator to email me when food gets low to refill it.

3, network connected media streaming device

4, thinking up the next project :)

    Missed it again :/

  • Coupon expired it seems

  • code has expired :(

The Lightinthebox special finally worked for me just a few minutes ago, good luck:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354466

    • That worked! Thanks for the tip. LITB is better than Gearbest in their checkout flow. Makes much more sense.

    • thanks for that, didn't see it come live and picked up another.

      • Thanks LITB code still working, now to get power supply/case/sensor kit etc

        • There were two deals recently for case and modules, $9 each. Hunt them down on OB.

        • @swapsey:
I got the case one thanks, but can't see any for a power supply.
The modules one has expired, maybe the rep could redo it or similar.

  • +1

Wow, 27 votes for 30 stock. Not bad, considering I got 1. :)

    • Good work mate

  • Bit annoying. Didn't last long.

  • Are you kidding me, I was at work….

I think this was the best deal :D
