    What network does it use?

    • +7

      It is actually Optus, literally resold by Coles. So much so that when I changed from Coles prepaid to Optus SIM only they didn't even send me a new SIM.

      • +2

        @SurprisedEwe I haven't used ColesMobile. Any feedback on what it's like for people thinking of trying them out? Do they have a useful web interface to manage the account and check usage? Do they just use the Optus web login.

        • +2

          The best 4G coverage is Telstra99% >vodaphone96.9%>optus 95%. Aldi 4G coverage is 98.8%.

        • @Unity55:

          Aldi 4G coverage is 98.8%.

          I don't know about the rest but the Aldi one is wrong, that's their combined coverage.

          Aldi 4G is 96.5%

        • No, it doesn't use Optus My Account. I don't think you get much of a portal really. Usage can be found by sending (free) SMS to a number. SMS "BAL" to 999 I think it was.

        • +3

          I was happy with the coverage and the service. I'd shopped around and of the big providers and supermarkets they had the best deal (especially now with the extra data and the 35 day deals).
          They only provide the "send a text to a number and they'll text back how much data to have" method. Old school but I wasn't a heavy data user so between that occasionally and my phone tracking, it was usually sufficient.
          Admittedly though I do have a dual SIM phone with the prepaid being my personal number and the other SIM a work number on Telstra. This is my back up if I don't have signal on the Optus SIM.
          From my experience I'd happily recommend, though obviously it depends on where you are - I'm in Newcastle, NSW for reference.

        • -2

          @Unity55:
          I think anything is better than Optus! They don't provide the sms delivery report! It's like they are still in the 80s!
          Delivery report is very important to know if your message is received without a reply or sending a second message. Also I prefer Telstra over Optus, Optus is from Singapore.

        • @SurprisedEwe: and @Noz

          Thanks for the info.
          Too bad usage monitoring is via the sim only.
          Saves me buying a sim to check out Coles Mobile before setting someone up on that plan.

          @spaceflight: what do these percentages mean, population? If so, I wish they'd just say land area instead, seems much more useful basis of comparison…

        • +3

          @nuchalis: You are right. it's mean Australian population covering. For the area covering, I don't think any of them reach 50%.

        • +5

          @pal: what on earth do you need an SMS delivery report for

        • +1

          @spaceflight:
          I have found Aldi to be excellent in metro area and quite patchy coverage in rural. Big difference between my Aldi and my missus Telstra coverage

        • @noz:

          You can. You can just make an Optus account with your phone number and it will tell you usage etc.

        • +1

          @jobler:

          what on earth do you need an SMS delivery report for

          @Helmuth:
          Ahh yeah, that could be correct. If I remember right you can even get access to Optus Perks.

        • @Unity55:

          It looks it's either 95% or 96.5% haha
          https://www.aldimobile.com.au/faq/

        • +2

          @nuchalis:

          Yes it is population.

          All carriers likey use some sort of official population map to provide the percentage.

          Land area would be a pretty bad comparison as carriers could cover about 80% of the landmass and reach 0 people. Probably covering 85-90% of the landmass would only cover a very small percentage of the population.

          An interesting point, Telstra 3G covers an extra 1 million square km, about 70% more than 4G but only gains 0.4% of the population

          Telstra 4G now covers 1.4 million square kilometres around Australia. That's only 18 per cent of Australia's 7.7 million square kilometres of landmass, but 99 per cent of Australia's population lives within those areas. 3G coverage reaches 31 per cent at 2.4 million square kilometres, even further than 4G and with 99.4 per cent coverage

          https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2017/08/telstra-4g-now-covers-99-…

        • -1

          @quincymac:

          Yes there will be.

          When I was looking at Aldi mobile I found that Telstra resellers (except Boost) can only provide coverage where another carrier has coverage. So if Telstra is the only network where you are located then Aldi will not get coverage.

        • @spaceflight:

          Telstra 3G covers an extra 1 million square km, about 70% more than 4G but only gains 0.4% of the population

          Thanks, that's what I want to know! I travel a lot in the outback, I want the absolute most coverage I can get… That said, I don't even care if it's 4G, just able to send a TXT so I wonder if that changes anything :)

        • +1

          @nuchalis:

          I want the absolute most coverage I can get… I don't even care if it's 4G, just able to send a TXT so I wonder if that changes anything :)

          Then go with Telstra and get an blue tick phone.

          3G won't make a difference for SMS, even if you are connected to 4G I think it will switch back to 3G to send and receive an SMS.

        • +1

          @nuchalis: I think land area is less useful than population. Do you really want coverage of Simpson Desert? The problem is the deserts are definitely not covered, most metro customers are covered, so it's the people at the fringes who have issues and there is no good measure for that kind of issue.

        • +1

          @greenpossum: Noone covers a desert if there are no customers in it.

          But coverage in transport corridors, which would be the majority of the 1 million km, does make a big difference unless you stay in populated areas all the time

        • @zerovelocity: Glad you agree, but what measure would you suggest that would show what people in transport corridors can expect? Population doesn't cut it, and land area even less so. The corridors would only be a tiny fraction of a percent of the land area. You really need a map, not a single number. Essentially everybody has to test it for themselves. Even in metro areas. My friend is in a black spot suburb for VF. But he has to stay with VF for other reasons (family).

        • +1

          @greenpossum: The problem can be solved (sometimes) by setting up your own (directional/tall) antenna and then a local cellular radio. It costs, but if your local member is not working for you, the telcos certainly won't- they have not covered you for a reason.

          Or wait till someone figures out a way to do it within their budget.

          To measure it? Perhaps a program that takes the map of transport corridors and populated areas, overlays it with cellular coverage maps from each telco… and produces some stats?

        • @jobler:
          Well I understand some people are from the 20s,I mean 1620s. You don't need a delivery report. You can send your harbingers but I don't send a message if it is not important, if I send it, I need the delivery report.

          @GCSteve:
          hi GCSTeve, I reckon I was wrong about that comment. See Helmuth's comment. I vaguely remember that you can use Optus My Account (but can't remember 100% for sure myself). Apologies for the confusion.

        • @Helmuth:

          Thanks, handy to know for people considering this plan and others already on Coles Mobile doing it the hard way.

        • @GCSteve: <= Ignore the linked comment as I can no longer remove the incorrect information in it.
          It turns out usage monitoring and account management can be done via the Optus web interface similar to other Optus prepaid plans.

        • +1

          @GCSteve:

          Yes, just be aware that the app won't work.

        • -1

          @spaceflight: I was thinking of going with Aldi as I want a Long Expiry Plan and was considering their Pay as you go, thinking they would have good coverage using the Telstra Network even if it was 3G. Sounds like a need to start again if what you say is correct.

      • +2

        Exactly right. It's not even an Optus MVNO. It is Optus with Coles branding over it. Same situation with me … I was on Coles Mobile prepaid, and switched to Optus postpaid. No new SIM card sent, it just simply worked

      • +1

        No free music streaming though?

      • Thanks for the info. Optis is weak in my aeea so I’m avoiding this sim.

  • +4

    Looks similar to the AldiMobile Superpack with the same 42GB data, unlimited calls and sms over the year but on the Optus network and cheaper.

  • good deal
    $15/month

    • +8

      Kogan is better

      • +14

        .. not if you're someone that gets better Optus reception than Vodafone reception.

        • yeh dont be like me and get stuck on a 1 year plan with crappy signal. shouldve stayed with optus :(

        • +1

          I dont know anyone who prefers optus of voda these days. Mb those that live in Perth or remote areas - then again optus is just as shite in the country. I guess i can only vouch for Melbs

        • +1

          Well Kogan comes with 2x the data AND is 20% cheaper (with discount) so i guess if ur unlucky enough to live in an area where Optus is better than Voda (quite rare in Melb/Syd)… it may be a 'better' deal for you.

        • depends on area…my relative on non-optus zone no cables broadband and really bad Optus reception.

        • @Gavman: I much prefer Optus over Voda or Telstra in the areas of metro melb I reside and frequent.

  • +1

    Can you put your own number on it?

    • +4

      As in port/transfer? Yes

  • Any international call?

  • +4

    Is lebara s current deal of $180 for 1 year including international calls and 60gb data not cheaper ?

      • +8

        I see Vodafone has improved a lot while Optus is going downhill

        • +3

          I've been with Kogan/Vodafone since last August and haven't had an issue whatsoever.

        • -1

          @carlenet:

          Don't Vodafone use optus towers anyway so is there even a discernable difference?

        • @carlenet: Do you get out of town much? Fails horribly when I go to Maleny (95kms north of Brisbane).

        • +3

          @montorola:
          Since when did Voda use Optus? They do have agreements to share some towers in some areas but the two are completely different networks.

        • @carlenet:

          I've been with Kogan/Vodafone since last August and haven't had an issue whatsoever.

          That's like saying: I've haven't had a car accident yet, so it's safe to drive!

        • @antler: Yes. Regularly up at Mt Baw Baw, Lake Mountain and Geelong.

        • @carlenet: That's been my experience too. I've been with Kogan (Vodafone) since early December 2017. With Telstra, by the time I'd gone slightly over my 9.5 GB of data (the max. I could buy), I'd get a bill of over $200 every month! With Kogan prepaid, I've got 23GB of data to use each month with unlimited calls and texts. I prepaid for 1 month at $4.90 (that was an intro offer) then prepaid 95.70 for another 3 months so running at just over $25 per month on average at the moment. Very happy, no complaints.

  • +2

    Roaming?

  • +1

    It looks like they support roaming so it's pretty awesome

    • Can it be added to this prepaid 1 Yr plan though?

        • what are roaming rates like

        • +1

          @aussman: Roaming is always expensive for all carriers, except for special schemes like VF's $5/day. But receiving SMSes is free, which is needed by some people to get verification codes.

        • @greenpossum:
          Important to note that you don’t have to make and/or accept calls. But at least you can receive SMS and call notifications and then if you wish you can use Voip to call back the incoming number.
          For banking this can be a very attractive complement of roaming and it doesn’t cost anything as long as you don’t pick up calls or activate data roaming.

        • @simmos: Only hassle though is needing a dual SIM phone or swapping SIMs if one is using a local SIM in a foreign country.

  • Pretty decent deal.

    I just activated Kogan's medium 365 day plan (6GB/per 30 days = 72GB) for $195.60, but it's on Vodafone network.

    • How'd you get that? Good price, $104 off the usual price

      • +2

        Took advantage of this expired deal and $10 referral credit.
        My existing mobile contract expired last week so it was great timing!

        • Nice! You certainly got a bargain :)

        • +3

          @Helmuth:
          Back on. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359466
          Then use $50 off vouchers from eBay etc. around the $160 or so mark.

        • +1

          @Steptoe:
          Brilliant! Even better!

        • @Steptoe: May I know how to get the $50 off voucher

        • @Writing:
          $20 + $30 vouchers are for sale on eBay. They come from Qantas, Gumtree etc. promos. Usually under $10 for both on eBay or Gumtree, or try the classifieds here.

          Currently $30 Voucher is $4. $20 Voucher is $5. Search “Kogan Voucher” and sort by lowest price.

      • +3

        I used $50 off $120 using stackable Kogan vouchers that I purchased for $8 to get price further reduced by $42, so somewhere around $155 for 12 months for 6GB/month plan.

        I had to read a lot of OzBargain to achieve this though. Worth it or not really depends on how important is your time.

  • +2

    so is it 3.5 GB per month or 42 GB per month?

    • +2

      3.5 GB per month

    • 3.5GB/month. Better value than their $20/35day/3GB alternative.

      Though you're not drip fed your 3.5GB, so you could use all 42GB in two days if you wanted.

      • +1

        And then have no data for 363 days.. * shivers *

        • Well, that's the thing I like about prepaid. Recharge another $180 and you're ready to use 42GB in two days again!

          I prefer this 365 day plan to Kogan tbh.

        • +2

          @jjjaar: Holy smokes that's $32 850 a year!!!

        • +1

          @pennypincher98: Bargain!

      • +1

        It also means it's got rollover built in with no limits. So, you could "rollover" all your data to the last month if you wanted.

        Don't you lose unused data on those XX GB per month plans?

    • I interpret it as 42 GB per 365 days, charged per kb out of the $180 credit. It is not spread by month but by a single value. This is similar to buying broadband data for 180 or 365 days. Thus if you use all your data (kid streaming Netflix) in the first month, you will have none left for the remaining period, and may possibly require a recharge to continue using the unlimited calls and sms.

      T&C:
      $180 Recharge: Will get you unlimited calls to standard national numbers, 13/1300 numbers and voicemail plus unlimited standard national SMS/MMS and 36GB data (charged in per KB increments). Recharge expires within 365 days. Customers who activate a SIM and recharge with $180, activate a $180 SIM or recharge with $180 on the Coles Prepaid plan from 7 February 2018 until 7 August 2018 will receive 42GB data (36GB + 6GB bonus) on every $180 recharge made within this period. Bonus data may take up to 72 hours to be applied and will expire at the same time as that recharge.

      Note - The Kogan plan includes data by the month, so if it is used up, it will reset to 3GB (or whatever) for the next month and meanwhile calls/ sms can still be made without remainder data for the month.

      • +1

        and may possibly require a recharge to continue using the unlimited calls and sms.

        No. I've used up my data allowance with Coles prior to the end of recharge period. Calls and texts were active until the end of the period.

        • OK, good to know. That is similar to Kogan which keeps working after using up data for the month.

        • Unlim calls to 'standard' numbers. Is that landline And mobile?

  • Is there any flybuys offers with Coles mobile or anything to sweeten the deal?
    $15/month for 3.5GB is okay, but want to see if it's really worth it.

    • Nope, sadly.

      • Yeah, I just looked on WW Mobile and they are offering 2 points per $ spent, and $4.17 a month off if you get an Oppo R9s but on the whole not that much.

        Coles is doing 500 flybuys points for $2.50 off - the exact same as 2000 points for $10 off.

        • With Coles you don't earn 500 flybuys points. You redeem them. You have to earn the points first.

        • @jjjaar: Yeah that's what I meant. Absolutely no incentive.

        • +1

          @pennypincher98: Right, yeah it definitely doesn't sweeten the deal. Would be good if they did give double points or even a bonus per recharge.

    • You can usually get points for a particular spend, varies I think per person.

  • Is it possible to use Coles gift cards to buy this?

    • I have used them in the past for telstra phone , boost mobile sim & recharge package , optus mobile broadband recharge .Haven't used them recently but if i get this deal i was planning on using my discounted coles gift cards.Can't see it being an issue.

  • I can't find this info on their page, can you bring your own number on the prepaid plans?

    • you can find this info on this page.

      • I still can't see where it says you can bring your own number…
