cant eat any other canned tuna

  • +1

I want the smaller cans to go on sale. Seriously their garlic and soy flavour is on another level compared to John west

  • Nice, no 6 can limit as well like they had at Coles

    • Even though Coles had a limit I had no issue buying 48 cans in a single transaction.

      • +1

I had about 50 cans last time, in the self serve check out

The check out assistant came over and said I couldn't purchase that many cans of tuna

I told him to rack off and if I needed him I would signal him over

He went over to the service desk to get the manager I assume, but I put the last dozen cans through quickly and paid

I gave him a nice big smile and waved as I left with my 50 cans

Cool story bro. Something pretty fishy about it

        • selling them on ebay for $150?

        • @D6C1: If he can do it, so can you.

        • -6

Should have bashed the clerk. The nerve of some people…

        • And left with a heavy baggage

        • I just went through a manned register, no questions asked. Did it on two different occasions throughout last year when the 185g tins were $2. I guess it just depends who you get to serve you.

      • Yeah it seemed like it was enforced at some stores and not at others

    • Really? I had no idea. I went to self serve and checked out with 40 cans no problem

    • When they do that use the baby formula move, in and out how many times you want with legal limit

      • Legal? Nothing illegal about it. Just store policy. The baby formula antics some get up to to make a few bucks is appalling and pathetic.

        • +1

Yeah I meant the store limit they put on purchases.

  • How does Sirena compare to John West?

    • +3

      Sirena is the best

      • Is it more tuna? Better tasting sauces? Higher quality tuna?

        • +4

I would happily eat John West/Greenseas etc but Sirena tuna is easily better quality. It comes out as chunks or pieces, rather than tuna mash. I've tried flavoured ones like curry laksa, chilli, tomato and basil. The sauces are also better quality. Tomato has what looks like real chunks of tomato, curry laksa had real pieces of string beans for example.

Google "Sirena open tuna can" and you can immediately see a difference between this and the others.

        • Yellow fin, the others use mediocre skipjack

        • @Laziofogna:
Was still pacific blue fin in some sirena cans for a while. Not any more though. Can't beat blue fin… whole other level.

Endangered species now but was good while it lasted.

        • I like this tuna, but I also like the other brands.

        • @4foxache:

Yep, like white rhino's, they were delicious on the BBQ / braaiplace :D

    • +1

Main difference would be that John West is Skipjack tuna and Sirena is Yellowfin. Yellowfin over skipjack any day of the week. On a side note, the yellowfin tuna from Aldi and Coles isn't bad either.

  • Unfortunately yellowfin apparently have higher mercury levels. The bigger the fish and the higher they are in the food chain, the higher the content apparently.

    • Welp, back to the canned anchovies for me!

      • Brunswink ;) canned sardines also on sale!

  • Wtf do you do with 50 cans of tuna? Surely no need to stash as This sort of deal comes regularly?

    • +2

      About twice yearly you'll find

    • Me and the wife eat shitloads of tuna as its a healthy and easy lunch, we just mix it salad or tomato and spinach. The 185g cans only seem to only go on special 2-3 times a year now at $2, so we just stockpile it when it’s down to $2. If we runout we buy the Aldi one, which is good, but the Sirena is just that bit better.

      • I guess I must be seeing the small can ones on special then.

      • +1

But too much tuna = mercury
I’ve read not to eam more than a can a week.
        Just buy chicken breast

        • -1

If you are concerned with Mercury don't buy this tuna as it is Yellowfin.

Buy one that has skipjack instead as Yellowfin can have the times more mercury

          https://www.edf.org/oceans/mercury-alert-canned-tuna-safe

        • Eh live a little, the world could end next week for all we know a little mercury wouldnt be too bad ;)

        • @jno:

Yeah that’s why for me 1 can a week is enough.

      • Hey man, you'd have to be a BR fan?

        • Haha yeah, massive Bad Religion fan!

        • @AtheistPeace:
Same dude.. Hopefully they return to or shores soon…its been a while

        • @Bullion78:

Another BR fan* here. Come back you bastards!

(And NOFX fan, as you could probably deduce from the username… seeing them both on the same stage was the best night of my life!)

    • For dem gainz bro… 50 cans will last less than 2 weeks.

  • Triple Chilli with the oil… So good.

  • +1

Other fun fact: Trout stay put.

  • Im gonna keep eating this till i die from mercury poisoning but in all seriousness everytime i try to cheap out and buy any other brand i regret it, always sirena for me

  • +2

$1.90 each if using discounted WISH eGift cards (as every OzBargainer should).

    • +3

      Math checks out :)

  • If you care about sustainability there are better brands to buy

But Sirena got a green smiley face!

  • +1

Nice just finished last can a few days ago!

  • They seem to have added a non olive oil component to their Tuna in Oil… I always loved Sirena, but I feel they're cutting corners now.

Sole Mare are my current fave I gotta say, but the Sirena Chili Oil Tuna was traditionally the greatest…

  • Please rank in order the flavours from best to least liked??

    • With chilli and oil > everything
Don't like spicy? Learn my friendd its like crack

      • I was surprised to find the chili oil one decent as the flavoured tunas usually taste like cat's piss from all other brands. Even the lemon was good which was crazy.

  • Just tried the 'Ocean Rise' chunk tuna in oil w/ chilli from Aldi and it's going to be my new go-to.

$1.80 for 185g and I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference in taste/texture between this and Sirena if it was a blind test.

Says yellowfin tuna on the can which is the same as Sirena. Didn't even seem like a sale price either.

  • +1

Like purely for the Seinfeld reference

  • +1

    thanks for the fun fact

  • It might be time to boost my never ending stock with some bountas 185g tins again.

  • I love the chilli ones. Peppercorn is awesome, so is soy and ginger. Puttanesca not bad, teriyaki was not that great.

  • Try the new Triple chilli, (small can only at coles). Chilli lovers is going to be addicted to it!

  • I regret not going all out and buy up a bunch of the "triple chili" version during the last coles sale. The triple chili tastes just right for my taste buds when eating straight up.

They've got a butt load of different versions, but decided to make that one only limited time =\
