  • How does this compare to the Amazon Fire TV for running things Kodi/Plex etc?

    • +1

Same internals as their latest version, and Kodi and Plex both develop for Android TV.

      • I dont quite understand how this works.

So you plug this into your tv and still have to have a thing like Kodi?

New to this and dont quite understand it.

        • You plug this into your tv. It displays output through your tv.

The difference with standard android that you get in your phone and tablet is this runs android tv.

That is the google play store only has apps designed for android tv. Could be a good thing or bad thing depends how you like to look at it.

This box is good because the interface is built with big screen tv in mind. Navigation is simplified. Also has drm to play 4k netflix.

Also the remote you can use google assistant but if you side loaded apps the remote could be limited in function. Better buy a mini rf keyboard/mouse too with this box if you intend to use non android tv apps.

    • There is a comparison of mi box VS firetv
Depends if you Amazon or Google

  • -6

Just cast it from your phone

    • This does so much more than your phone though as it's running Android TV and offers a standalone experience. A Chromecast Ultra offers far less features for a higher price.

    • I prefer mi box over the chrome cast ultra. The chrome cast is limited cant do 9 catchup without casting Web page which is annoying

      • What is the issue? 9 Now app has Chromecast functionality.

  • +1

I think a new version might be coming out soon (based on their Chinese product line).

    • +3

Very unlikely to release anew international version this year. This is completely different to the Chinese version with different licensing

    • The only thing that's happening is a revised remote so that it has Google Assistant branding and a recent app menu button. The internals will go unchanged.

Going forward I don't think they'll update until there's a need for more HDR standards, and things like 8k and HFR.

    • Chinese only

  • Can anyone comment on its real-life performance with streaming 4K movies, since it does not have a wired connection?

    • +1

Supports 5 GHz 802.11ac, so you should be able to get 200 Mbit without breaking a sweat if your network is setup properly.

    • Wireless Ac can handle 4k via Netflix and kodi no issues so far

That is 4k hevc and 4k x264 and dts HD ma 7.1 and atmos 7.1 formats

If you having issues more likely your network or file server is the bottleneck

    • +1

4K Netflix and Youtube are significantly lower bandwidth than true 4K. You're looking around 10mps for YouTube and 15mbs for Netflix to get the 4K experience. Can confirm I have streamed both to this device flawlessly without any issues.

    • +1

U can add a USB to ETHERNET adapter, the android software detected the one I purchased.
I bought a UGREEN version from EBay , it was 1GB connection and had 3 USB 3 ports.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UGREEN-USB-Gigabit-LAN-Ethernet-…

I play 4k files of a media sever no problems. Huge files

      I don't remember if I tried Wi-Fi sorry.

      • +1

Will run at 200mb as that is usb2.0 limitation

    • It works really well. I can stream 4k Youtube, Google play movies etc, flawlessly on 50Mbs NBN. Haven't tried netflix though.

Edit: Even looking at Youtubes playback stats its playing back at 2160p with ease

The beta testers confirm that Oreo has auto frame rate switching which is the best news regarding the release

  • +5

Furthermore as of this week Xiaomi have started to roll out Android 8.0 Oreo.

Thanks Clear, that is an awesome news!!

    • +4

Yup I'm eagerly waiting for it to come to mine now.

  • Finally bought one thanks clear.

  • Anyone else having trouble getting the cart to load? I'm getting a connection time out error.

    • It worked from the computer

    • Doesn't work via the mobile Web page

    • After constantly get connection timeouts on the mobile site I switched to the full webpage view and worked fine.

Nearly 2 for the price of 1 Vodafone tv

    • +1

I've got a MiBox and a Vodafone TV. I like the MiBox but the VTV blows it out of the water.

      • +2

Can you expand on this please? Looking to get a streaming device for my parents, this, Telstra TV or the Vodafone TV seem the best options.

        • +1

Seconded… whats the main benefits of Vodafone TV vs Mi Box??

        • +3

          @mooney:

          • Ethernet
          • TV tuner
          • Better remote (dedicated app buttons / tactile buttons / more buttons in general)
          • 2 year Australian warranty
          • Local pickup or free express delivery
          • Android TV 7.1.1 (although there is a rumour that the MI Box is getting Oreo)
        • @kirt: Hi Kirt! I'm assuming we can install Kodi + Plug Ins etc on the VTV just as easy as any other box? (it's not locked down in any way)?

        • +1

          @domcc1:

          Correct.

        • Also Australian power supply.

        • @kirt: Ethernet is only 10/100mb if you use a usb2.0 Gigabit Ethernet adaptor you will get up to 200mb

        • @asa79:

Yeah I use the Ugreen adapter with my Mi Box - works great.

I did some testing the other day on my Voda box, and it happily streamed a 4K 2160p BluRay REMUX (42.3 GB in size with a bitrate of 44.1 Mbps) over Ethernet, so was happy with that.

BTW - I couldn't find info relating to the Voda box Ethernet speed, but plan on connecting to it (ADB) to check over the weekend - do you have a link / info about it's speed?

        • @kirt:
Would the Xiaomi box run a remux file like you mention direct from a USB stick without dropping frames?

My inbuilt media player on my Panasonic 4k tv can't handle the high bit-rate 4k mkv files I'm trying to throw at it.

        • @Qbagger:

Shouldn't be a problem - will test with that same file later tonight on the Mi Box via USB and let you know ;)

        • @kirt: cheers!

        • @Qbagger:

Tested the 4K 2160p BluRay REMUX mentioned above via USB on the Mi Box, and it worked perfectly ;)

        • There is no benefit of spending $40 more if you dont need to.
          - 10/100 ethernet will be too slow for 4k movies from local sources,
          - TV tuner is same functionality as you would have in your normal tv without all the hassles that are associated with the chipset in these units.
          - If you want more remote features you can use your TV remote with HDMI CEC control for play, pause, fast forward etc

Australian warranty would be only benefit but if you can say that is worth $40?

        • +1

          @kirt:
Thanks a lot, great to hear. Have ordered one now.

        • @kirt: It sounds great aside from the lack of optical audio :/

  • +1
    • Surface Pro ethernet adapter works too (if you have one)
Amazon Basics USB>ETH has throughput issues so avoid

  • I bought one from a Light In The Box deal. Highly recommend. Just need to know what it can and can't do and work within those parameters. For example the nba app is garbage on it so for that I chromecast from phone with no issues.

Does anyone know of a cheap games controller they'd recommend? Alternatively I have a few xbox 360 controllers if that is an option?

  • What is the differnce between the 2 and the 3 models?

    • +1

All other versions are in Chinese and do not run Android TV. The Xiaomi Mi Box 3 was released for the global market.

  • Any chance for a comobo deal with the box 3 and the ethernet adapter? :)

    • I could possibly get a discount on the adapter, but they're both located in different warehouses and would be shipped separately.

      • Will the adapter be eligible for free shipping too?

        • Yep. Pretty much everything except really large products have free shipping.

        • @Clear: Cool. In regards to payment do you charge in USD?

        • @folken2k: Yes. Do you have a card like 28 Degrees or Citibank with no currency conversion fees? If you do it's possible to set it up to use it's own conversion rate in Paypal. Otherwise you'll pay a little bit more due to Paypal's inflated rate.

        • @Clear: I cancelled my 28D a while back. Will have to use PP

      • that would be cool

  • +1

Anyone knows if you can install the Foxtel app from the play store?
Not the Foxtel Now app, as I sorta have a Foxtel subscription but want to see if I can watch Foxtel on another TV without getting another IQ shitbox.

  • +1

Just FYI there is heavily rumored to be a Google Branded Android TV "box" (in a Chromecast size form factor) being announced very soon. Not to say this isn't a good deal but I personally am waiting to see if that's the case as the software support will be much better.

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/04/google-io-2018-previ…

    • +1

There is already a Vodafone one that looks good. $120, but a bit better. And local warranty etc.

      https://www.vodafone.com.au/vodafone-tv

      • Yeah looks good, I still prefer to get the Google branded one if possible. Google's generally pretty good at getting speedy software releases for their devices.

        • Its just a media player. Updates are unlikely to add major useful features in future.

        • @manic: So what is the point in paying $40 more for android 7?

      • Google one will get updates alot quicker then any other brand

  • +1

Been looking for something along the lines of Amazon Fire TV 4K so bit the bullet on this.

    Thanks for deal OP.

  • +1

I have the inlaws coming soon, do these work like the ones in China where you can get to watch a bunch of Chinese television without fuss?

    • It runs Android TV, so if you know a way of streaming Chinese Tv on Android it will definitely work

  • I was going to say there's really not much point buying a mi box now with the vodafone tv out here. But if the 8.0 update truly does rollout soon (as being rumored), then it probably is worth it.

    • You'll need to get both to compare them properly :)

    • What does the android 7 have over 6 that will make it worth $40?

  • What's the difference between this Xiaomi box and the other dozens of cheaper boxes? It's a really confusing marketplace for Android TV boxes!

    https://www.geekbuying.com/category/Android-TV-Boxes-1547/2-…

    • +2

The difference is the Xiaomi is running Android TV OS and most of the others are running Android for phones and tablets. Android TV OS boxes normally have DRM which allows Netflix HD/4K and Youtube 4K while the Android phone/tablet versions do not.

      • +1

the Android phone/tablet versions do not.

And they usually only get 480P, with a bad interface.

  • Would this be overkill for simple Youtube onto an older TV for the oldies?

    • +2

Yes but it's good for oldies since android tv is very simple to use.

    • +1

Nope as its android TV, cheaper ones wouldnt be android tv

  • +1

So is the Vodafone TV box worth the extra $40 over this Mi Box?

I'm fine not having local warranty, it's more the features and quality that I'm considering.

    • +1

depends if you want remote with more buttons (Tho if your tv supports CEC you can use your TV remote for some of those extra features like play/pause etc) or tv tuner (non recording) or ethernet isnt really a benefit as its still only 100mb

  • Can you install app from outside play store? Thanks

    • +1

Yes you can but you have to side load it. Download the apk and install this apk.

    • +1

Yes but you will need a bluetooth keyboard or mouse to control them, as they not designed for TV remotes

      • +1

Can use mouse toogle app with Mi remote as well.

  • Hi Clear,
I know this is completely off topic…but are there any deals for the Tronsmart Braided USB-A to USB-C 3 Pack from Geek Buying. Missed it last time when it was $4.99 US.

  • If you have android Phone you can also use this as a remote control https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.duokan.pho…

  • does anyone else have random wireless issues with their mii box?

    • Might be your Wireless ap having issues. I havent had any issue since upgrading to a Unifi AC AP

  • i need advice. With this, do I still have to pay for Netflix subscription? Thanks.

    • Yes.

  • OP any discount on other android boxes ie: h96 pro plus?

  • Got one. Looks pretty good, especially with Android TV OS, and not phone OS.
Should definitely smarten up my dumb TV.
And I've been underwhelmed by my Chromecast.

  • What is the benefit of this over using an Xbox 1? (assuming you already have one)

    • if your into Kodi and terrarium TV. Xbox is only good if you want the legal way of streaming. E.g Netflix, Microsoft store, Spotify
