doesn't come with too many tools though.

    understatement…

    it's just a socket set…

  • +3

Cheap enough considering the trolley storage system?

  • +18

I call bullcrap on the $408 price.

This one, with no tools and a few cm smaller in dimensions, but comes with the roller bearing shelves and EVA foam inside to put your own tools in it nicely is $119.
    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/SCA-Tool-Cabinet-4-…

It's just a token tool set included, and probably tools you already have if you are considering a tool chest anyway.

I call bullcrap on the $408 price.

      It was $280 previously…

    • +4

      Few cm???

      • 620 x 300 x 1020

        V S

        541 x 281 x 888

        • +4

Yes that’s my point.. not a few cm.

        • +2

          @joshuah:

Only roughly 8x2x2, id agree its "only a few" personally.

        • +2

Huge volume lost, you could place lots of cm's inside that missing space.

        • -1

          *sigh.

The majority of its volume lost is height.
It's 2cm in depth difference, and 8cm in width difference.

You're nitpicking on my chosen words of "a few cm", and completely ignoring my initial point of that the RRP is complete rubbish considering an alternative cabinet is available for one quarter of the price!.

No sane person is buying this thing for $408 when the one I linked to sells normally for $119, regardless of the few cm in size difference.

MY POINT ISN'T THAT THE ONE I LINKED TO IS BETTER, MY POINT IS THE STANLEY ONE ISN'T A BARGAIN AT $150 CONSIDERING WHAT ELSE IS AVAILABLE.

          A few cm or not.

        • @MasterScythe: Morelike roughly 8x2x13.

        • +1

          @stebie:

MasterScythe might be an expert on blades, but they completely failed maths.

        • -1

          @UFO: *sigh

Someone else getting angry at a correction of their mistake.

        • +1

          @UFO: 190L vs 135L so it's 41% larger for only 26% more in price ($150 vs $119) ?

I'd say the op's post is a better deal. Plus you get a bag of spanners…

That aside, I prefer the wider drawers for storing hacksaws, long drill bits, wrenches etc.

    • +7

Mate, those "few" centimetres give it an extra 40% storage space. 8cm x 2cm x 13cm extra makes it much more than just a few centimetres…

      • -2

It's mostly height lost mate. You are simplifying it by taking it as volume, when usable space lost is 2cm in depth and 8cm in width.
But like I said above, you're nitpicking on my chosen words…. I was simply trying to show that this thing isn't worth the $400 its claiming to be.

        • +1

Taking it as volume is not simplifying it, they are complicating it, maybe unnecessarily so.

But 40% volume difference is a large difference, saying that is a few centimetres is simplifying it.

I bought four of these from ebay and they look to be a similar unit:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8-Drawers-Tool-Box-Chest-Cabinet…

Its one of those deals that is not a deal, $408 for that is just a rippof.

    • Stanley's warranty is for the useful life of the product, which may or may not be 30 years for a tool box.

For $30 more you get an extra tray, an insane warranty and a cheap tool set.

I doubt they sell any at $409.

  • +5

Thats a big toolbox for a socket set.

  • +11

Sadly these are junk. Thanks for posting though OP.

    • really, why is that? How about for an everyday home kit?

Might go check it out anyway

      • A review says it's really thin metal…

  • +5

Is it 68 pieces of cable ties?

    • +2

Nah, 68 is the number of times this joke has been over-used on a tool kit deal.

  • +4

Is this like the one in home alone 2 that went down the stairs to smack the bad guys ? .. then it might come handy if I ever need to be in a situation like that and I need a Stanley 68 piece tool kit

  • +1

$408 becomes $150? Then how much they pay for this and mark up? Amazing rip off!!!

    • +1

Stores will always try and make more on their goods than what they originally paid, and I think they almost always will do that, but that ‘profit’ won’t necessarily cover their costs to sell that thing (wages, rent, water, elec, etc). So let’s say that SCA bought this from the Stanley distributor for $125 (I have no idea how much it’s worth just a made up BS number), they’re still making a profit but it’s significantly smaller.

The other side of the coin is marketing. So, they buy it for $125, list it for $408 and then reduce it to say $250 as a recurring sale, to artificially inflate its value to make customers think they’re getting a great deal. The back end is smoke and mirrors, we’ll never know what companies can buy their goods wholesale for (realistically). But the proof is normally in the pudd, SCA isn’t closing stores and laying off (not always a direct indication) so chances are they’re still making a profit.

I’m not trying to be condescending, you’ve nailed it on the head. That you’re asking the question, how is this so cheap why is there such a huge markup is exactly the opposite of what SCA would like you to think, which is, this is so cheap what a bargain I’ll buy this before it goes back up in price.

    • Probably $40.

Logistics and retailing cost a lot more than the actual product. Imagine the shipping cost from the factory in China to an individual store. Imagine having to stock 600 bulky items only to sell 150 each year.

'Wholesale cost price' would be ~$160, but after retail expenses SCA would be lucky to make $70 per tool box. This is a clearance line, hence SCA is taking a hit.

Anyone know of a way to get this cheaper? Discounted gift cards etc?

Or is there anyone on here who’s a tradie / that knows their stuff and could recommend a much higher quality product for around the same price.

All of my tools are all over the place.. think it’s time to sort it out.

    • +2

Buy Supercheap Auto gift cards from the entertainment book at 10% discount. Then purchase item online via cashrewards, pay with gift card.

  • Decent price for a big storage unit on wheels. Not bad at all.

  • They are pretty average trolleys, ok for a basic handyman. The wheels are junk i would recommend replacing them with a decent set.

    • +2

Do people actually wheel these round their garage/shed? I assume everyone just put them in a corner where they would live forever.

  • +2

The original price is bullshit and there's absolutely no way they ever sell at this price.

$150 isn't a bargain, it's what it should cost. I've got the other one (the next model up that pops up here from time to time) and it's pretty average. Worth what I paid but definitely not worth "RRP".

Wheels are utter trash. Drawers okay but have a bit of a tendency to slide open if not properly shut.

Not a bargain, this is all the product is worth. The Stanley name isn't one of quality anymore.

  • I had a cheap trolley and tool box like this years ago. It's good to store your tools in and I never had trouble with the castors wheeling around shed.

The drawers were on slides without bearings. I had it fully loaded and the drawers wouldn't slide properly and would jam. In the end I replaced the top box and still use the bottom trolley today.

  • If you wanted you could wait till tomorrow and possibly stack [Targeted] eBay 10% off Sitewide (Min Spend $75) with their eBay listing here

    As stated by TA

    Eligible customers only.

Making it $408 > $135 (Click and Collect)

    • +1

If you're not lucky enough to be targeted you could use PULL5 for $142.50 with free Click and Collect too.

  • $119.97 + $5.23 delivery for me (3088) for an 8 drawer tool chest from catch of the day. Main point I noted given the ‘volume per dollar’ discussion is the dimensions are (L x W x H) 61.5cm x33cm x 111.5cm approx, which compared to the other options so far is good.

    https://m.catch.com.au/product/8-drawers-tool-chest-metal-to…

Not comparing the quality, just the size for cost.

EDIT: Shipping varies quite considerably so it’s not good value for say 4300 as that would cost over $100 postage!

  • These rollers are garbage, and the wheels also don't have a lock.
Most roller cabs in this price range are also flimsy, word of advice is upgrade the wheels ASAP if you ever want to move it around your garage.

Make sure you use a decent grease on the draws, and you shouldn't have too many issues.

  • +1

It's tiny, cheaply made, and the tools are rubbish.

I bought it last time around, don't bother unless you really need a roller cab.
