        • @lostn: Only fat. Needs the HDD bay. Don't bother with slims as USB1 is much slower than the disc drive.

  • +1

It's weird coz it says "limit 1 per customer" and I was able to pre-order 2

  • +2

Thanks for sharing. Didn’t even know these were coming out! I wonder how good the emulation will be.

    • It almost certainly won't be as good as community emulators, I can't see Sony putting in the effort to fix the "warping" from the PS1 lineup like other emulators have.

I'm more interested for the controller.
They look to be USB with solid construction, if they made some USB dualshocks with the smoke color shell I'd buy one in a second.

  • Not sure. I would have preferred a collection of great games on disc/digital download instead if I owned a PS4.

  • +9

But will it come with a demo disc?

  • +2

In ten years they'll release the great classic playstation 3 and we'll all be lining up for it.

    • I feel like if it's got numbers, it just can't be vintage.

      • Perhaps, and i wouldn't buy a mini ps3. But I would absolutely love a mini PS2!

    • +1

Yep. I don't get it personally. If people liked them so much, why did they get rid of their consoles? Or not buy a second hand PS? I like many an old game, but the PC Emulators are usually better than these retro consoles, slap on a decent joypad/joystick and you have a better experience.

Many older games can be found re-released in a HD version also, like PaRappa the Rapper. Each to their own I guess.

      • Second hand PS would not be reliable, and would use Composite video. I don't know if TVs these days still support that.

PC emulators are unsupported by Sony. If it doesn't look or sound right, you have to play around with the settings or figure it out yourself.

There's something to be said for a box officially released by the console maker that is plug and play, no configuring needed and it's guaranteed to work 100%.

You don't get the improved graphics a PC emulator would give you, but those come with no guarantee of no unintended glitches.

        • All true.

I jist love the higher resolutions, better AA and AF offered by PC emulators. Usually for any game, someone has the ideal setting for it too. But a lot of people do not like configuring games, which I can understand.

        • +1

@FabMan: They will make 3D games look better. But you can't improve 2D graphics.

If a game uses pre-rendered backgrounds which was very popular at the time (e.g. Final Fantasy, Resident Evil), they will look like dog shit on an enhanced emulator. They will either look pixellated, or worse: filtered. Or you might see big squares everywhere. What's worse, if a game combines 2D and 3D, the 3D will look very nice but will be a jarring contrast next to the very pixellated 2D backgrounds.

Higher resolution and AA will only make 3D graphics look nicer. It does nothing for 2D.

Emulation is something I would recommend for N64. The only problem is, there has never been a controller that simulates the N64 controller. You need at least 3 triggers, one stick, and 6 face buttons. I have never seen a controller that has all of those things. Most controllers, you will have to map two of the C buttons onto shoulder buttons. If it's a 6 button game pad, it probably was made for Capcom fighters and has no analog stick. Even Nintendo themselves never made another controller like it.

And using a second stick to simulate the c buttons is not a good solution. You can't simulate pressing two buttons at a time, and rapid firing is not possible with a stick.

Having said that, I don't promise that these 2D games will look better on PS1 Classic. Blown up on your TV, it will probably still look bad. I would suggest a Framemeister if that's your thing.

What I've found to be the best way to play PS1 games without an enhanced emulator is via PSP. The resolution closely matches the PS1's, so you can play with no scaling, and it will look very nice on that 4.3" screen. Only thing is, you are limited to the games available on the PSN store, unless you rip your own games and run custom firmware.

        • @lostn: Real good points there.

Though I've found some 2D games look great with certain scalers, though each game is different, and 3D games really benefit from the features I mentioned before, but I have never seen Final Fatasy 7 look good with its 2D background and 3D characters using AA. I can make one bit look nice, but not both. Though an emulator can play just how it was released, like the PS console here.

        • @lostn:

you just got to use a n64 to pc adapter with a good n64 controller

        • @thelastnoob: I wish I had one of those 20 years ago when I got a PC capable of emulating N64 beautifully and the N64 was still relevant. I just never had a controller I could use. I didn't even have a PC controller with an analog stick. They didn't make them. There's not a lot of PC controllers even today. You'd be getting some form of 360/XB1 controller.

You might be able to find that adapter now, but N64 isn't interesting to me any longer.

  • Think I’ll wait for the full list. I’m not hugely interested in the 5 games announced. And actually I’ve never even heard of 2 of them.

  • +3

So classic it doesn't even have it's own Dualshocks…

    • Its the original analogue controller that the first released with the PS1. Not the later Duealshock. Hopefully console will be compatible with the original joysticks for those who still have them and probably not come with any games that did required the Dual shock controller to play like Ape Escape.

        That’s what he said.

        Nope. Look at the ports.

  • -7

The original playstation could be had for less with all those games and more included

    • +3

nope, wrong. we dont even know all the games yet.

    • +2

      Probably not.

PS1 with a couple of controllers, ~$40, decent copy of wild arms with manual, ~$60 if you are doing well. Tekken 3 ~$30, FFVII ~$40. Then you have another 17 games on top.

Mini SNES is probably better value at this point unless for some reason you consider file size a reasonable reason to charge $30 more. Disappointed this isn't shipping with analogue controllers. That might be their anti-hack technology though. Going to be a pain for any games that require camera control.

      • Tekken 3 and RR4 are $10.45 combined on the PS Store.

        • You can't play those on a second hand PS1.

      • Do ps1 games really go for that much? Guessing it has to be in mint condition or something.

        • Well, they stopped making them ages ago. So to get a physical copy will be expensive.

    • +1

      No.

  • +8

If it doesn't have Jonah Lomu it's not worth that price

    • Haha, gold

    • classic!

  • +1

Nothing from the analogue era then obviously.

    • RR4 had JogCon!

      • I still have that game and controller somewhere 🤔

  • +1

Sorry, don't mean to be a jerk but RRP is not a bargain.

Thanks for letting me know though, defs keen.

  • PS1 was my favorite console. Looking forward to this. No doubt there will be better deals closer to release date. Hopefully it will be hackable like the Nintendo classic consoles and they actually have enough supply unlike the initial NES Classic release which was hard to get.

  • +3

My Raspberry Pi plays all ps1 games fine ;)

    • With ya on that.

    • Try dynasty warriors 1. I can't get it to run properly. Poor performance and vertex explosions…

    • yeah but a raspberry pi is like $60, its so much cheaper to pay $150 for this, and also buy a nes mini and a snes mini

      • +1

This comes with 20 games, 2 controllers, and HDMI cable and looks amazing.

      • A Raspberry Pi is great but can you build one with retro PSX case, two controllers, Micro SD memory card, hdmi cable, USB cable and legally obtain all 20 games for $150. Jumping Flash! being one of those rare expensive titles.

  • +1

    I still have a Working Original :)

  • +1

    Any other Listings ?

  • +1

Would be all over this if they had smash court

  • +1

Seriously? I threw my old PS1 out about 3 months ago. Why are people paying so much money for these?

    • +1

      Vintage

    • They make a great rubbish bin lid. Don't chuck it out.

    • +1

Seriously? You threw out a PS1? Why?

    • Waste of resources and a waste of money. Why throw it out?

      • I didn't think it was of any value. Unit was literally 20years old. Not even sure it worked.

      • I threw mine out a few years ago. I just wasn't going to use it. It was taking up space for nothing. Was modded too.

But I still have a PS2 that can play my games.

        • There's an original model here for $100 that plays actual CDs etc - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/132701672581

Why are people paying so much for what is essentially a PS1 emulator? Raspberry Pi or any cheap- PC would do the same thing.

        • @BargainKen: Yeah but you won't have warranty on it. PS1 and PS2 lasers were fragile and if they broke, it would cost almost the price of the console itself just to replace the laser.

Anything that's 20+ years old is not going to be in good condition.

Why are people paying so much for what is essentially a PS1 emulator? Raspberry Pi or any cheap- PC would do the same thing.

Because they want to support an official product with their money. They like the cute little box and the convenience of 20 games ready to go without setting anything up. I wouldn't even know what to do with a Pi. It looks like PCB. You need to have at least some savvy. I doubt mum and dad buying a xmas gift for little timmy knows how to set up a Rasp Pi or PC emulation.

        • @lostn: Fair point, but I struggle to see how little Timmy would be nostalgic at such a young age :)

        • @BargainKen: It's a cheap console with 20 games. Mums don't know better. Kids don't need to play current gen $500 consoles with realistic graphics.

        • -1

          @lostn:

there are plenty of guides which walk you through the process of setting up a raspberry pi all over the internet. plus the device was originally intended to be a cheap way to teach kids about technology and coding and stuff.

        • @terminal2k:

A mum is not going to look for a guide. Forget about it.

They will take one look at the PCB and go, I don't get it. And that's that. It does not make for a very flashy xmas gift.

You're not going to teach 5 year olds about technology and programming. It's totally the wrong demographic.

        • @lostn:

i was writing stuff in basic at age 4. if a mum is too dumb to read a guide, she can buy a fully setup pi from ebay, or she could just buy a console and a copy of Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge

  • +13

Oh man i paid 600 on release.. i should have waited!!!

    • lol

  • +1

This could be achieved via backwards compatibility on Ps4 and future consoles…remaking the hardware is just stupid.

As other have said this is RRP, no bargain to be found here.

    • +2

      but it's mini……………. i want it i want it i want it

    • It could be, but it won't be. It was in the PS2, and the PS3, and omitted from the PS4.

There are far cheaper alternatives to playing PS1 games on modern hardware, but none of them are legal. This also applies to other forms of media, and the standard for measuring the bargain tends to be looking for the cheapest way to legally obtain them.

Agree that this is RRP, and RRP is not a bargain.

  • I've got a few-years-old laptop hooked up to my TV Via HDMI with a PS1 emulator on it, and I've downloaded all the classic games from Emu. I also boufht a logitech wired USB controller from EB games for about $40. The PS1 games run flawlessly. Not strictly legal of course but for all of you wanting this just for nostalgia purposes but don't want the $149 spend, it's another option since my only expense was $40 on the controller, and you can definitely find one cheaper than that; I just wanted it that day!

  • +3

well it's a bargain if you consider it will be worth 300 on ebay lol

    • The stupidity and laziness of people won't make this a bargain.

  • +1

Use to play this car game where you picked up rockets and shit, the bad guy was an ice cream truck. Loved that game, can't remember what it was called.

    • Twisted metal.

    • Twisted Metal!

    • Twisted Metal…. It was a great game :)

    • Twisted metal world tour was the best.

    • Twisted Metal - just in case you already didn't know.

    • Straight Wood

    • Twisted Metal if you can't be bothered to read the replies above.

Brilliant multi-player game we spent hours playing.

  • -1

Worth it just for Dino Crisis.

    • Is that confirmed?

    • How do you know it has that? Have they announced the rest of the game lineup?

  • -1

i still have my ps original, 99 bucks if anyone wants!

  • Still got my original one from 20+ years ago :)

    • Same. Still got an original with both analogue and dualshock controllers. Only problem is it no longer works bue to laser going bad. Which was a common problem for the console.

Remember the days of getting it modded with either a modchip or the PS Hacker/Action Replay cartridge with built in cheats and disck swap method. If you had one of the models with the parallel I/O port.

      • Yeah, mine's chipped - laser should be an easy fix, right?

  • Milkcow

  • Not a bargain blah blah blah… Fun police are always out in force.

  • Oh man….i remember my uncle bought this for me at Harvey Norman for $199.
I still have it in my cupboard. Those were the good old days…..

    • Username checks out.

  • +2

I played a PS1 about six months ago.

The games definitely haven't aged well. I don't see the value in this at all.

    • Some of the games had terrible controls. Just can't go back and play the original Tomb Raider and a few other because of this.

Original PSX graphics definitely haven't held up well but can vastly be improved to look really good through emulations. I hope they look good on the mini console.

  • will this accept game disc?

    • no

      • +1

        thats crap!

        • might be able to hack it like mini nes but its abit unknown still

    • This one is the size of the control.

  • We can play PS1 on phones/Tablets "alos better with accesory or ROG phone triggers" also PS1 on raspberry pi, Shield Tv . With every game for FREE ..

Who ever buys this is not a ozbargainer and doesn't know how to bargain. Same with the Nintendo mini's !

    • +3

We can play all Nintendo games on the pc now. We can hack the ps4 and private games. Lots of pc games are cracked, as is most software. Might as well neg all game deals.

Actually, you can just steal petty much anything, so might as well shutdown OzBargain!

    • Can't tell if serious or sarcastic.

    • 20 licenced games aren't included in a raspberry PI or mobile phone emulator

  • I think, more than anything, I'm sad that this won't be able to have Ape Escape on it.

    • That game made great use of the dual shock controller!

    • Loved that game!
