        • i didn't mention anything besides that i was with optus and they didn't ask.

  • So do I read some of these comments right?
Telstra won't allow me to use my phone as a hotspot with this deal?
Absolutely useless to me if this is the case.

Add: bit of googling suggests that hotspot usage on prepaid OK

why does JBHI never, ever have anything on the website about plans?

      • Thanks!!!

OK, according to this, no shaping or data sharing. Damn.

There is a $69 40GB/unlimited BYO sim plan direct from Telstra that allows sharing (+$5) and is 1.5Mbps shaped.

This is probably the better option for those looking to also use as a home connection / ADSL replacement.

$74pm to replace $40 phone + $60 TPG ADSL… but only 40GB at full speed then it’s standard def Netflix while shaped.

  • Everyone should check before the actual move, we ported 2 services to this deal and data speed is hovering around 15 - 25 mbps. Before the move we consistently get 200+mbps inside the house with Virgin.

    • Oh no! I wonder if the whole plan is capped at like 25mbps :(
I consistently get 50mbps on Optus.

    • Hmmm I'm getting less than 50mbps with jbhifi Telstra connection too(signed up early this year). With virgin I used to get over 150mbps

      • Interesting. Can anyone else post results?

        • I'm with Optus, and I get:
          Download - 110 Mbps
          Upload - 44 Mbps

      • I'm currently with Optus and up for renewal next month. Their current deal is $35pm with 30gb of data. Tempted to switch to telstra with this offer but if their speed is capped at 50, then I don't think its worth it when I consistently get 110+ with optus.

        • +1

Depends from Telstra coverage. I've signed up 50Gb plan this weekend and my best speed test so far is 410Mb/33Mb. So definitely no shaping on this plan.

          • @revhead: Thanks Revhead. Can you confirm your location for this test? full-bars 4G or 4gX reception?

            • @ro0sta: Postcode 2229. Full bars 4g on Note 9

    • Have you taken it up with Telstra reps? If not mentioned in T&Cs and subject to fair use policy, i'd be seeking compensation or at the very least the choice to cancel contract and get out of the 12-24mth agreement

  • Can someone please clarify whether with the $300/500 deal you have to buy a phone at the same time or do they give you a GC/credit that can be used in future on a phone purchase? I'm considering getting iPhone XR for my wife which is only available starting from Oct 26.

  • Damn I signed up with that deal for $49 15G/mo…just had a difficult chat with telstra support and increased my data to 30G…not 50G but I guess that is best I can do.

    • What did you say to them? I tried but they said no. Is there a specific area i need to go to when the virtual assistance asks you where to direct you?

Did you save a copy of your chat and willing to share?

    • +1

You should be able to recon to this plan regardless as long as you're on a BYO

  • Is this a Telstra contract that allows unmetered AFL/NRL streaming? Not sure how it works with JB-Hifi mobile…

    • Yes it’s with Telstra direct.

  • I just went into a JB. Been With Vodafone for only 10 days after coming off boost and the guy said sorry can't help you mate need to be off Telstra network for 30 days. Wasnt the JB guy that said no, he was on the phone with Telstra and they told him can't help your customer.

So I can't work out those that are getting ports through after a few days off the Telstra network.

The JB guy told me wait until 30 days are up. Deal should still be on.

    • Same thing happened to me. JB guy was chill but the dude on the phone said no dice, gotta wait.

  • Is a $5 Data Share SIM available with this?

    Like this thing - https://www.telstra.com.au/small-business/mobile-phones/mobi…

    • +1

      No.

      • Any idea what would be a good 4Gbplan to use as a home connection? I’m assuming (as long as reception is good) Optus network deals would be better?

        Say 50-100GB and shaping.

        • Ok took a look. Some good GB Optus plans, but all seem limited to 12/1. Probably better getting a mobile plan with data share to have good speeds.

  • I went to JB Hi-Fi bondi today to sign up for another $45 plan and the rep couldn't access Telstra's systems. They have been down all day.

I find it shocking how bad Telstra's systems. their website, and their support is. At least they have decent coverage.

    • I thought if the systems were down they just called

      • I watched 2 reps both unable to login to telstra system. I asked one of the reps if they get commission on the sale and he said yes so I would think if they could call they would.

        • +1

          yeah.. they just call through.

unfortunately for me my port is from Kogan. Apparently they are about the only ones that don't do any ports on a Sunday so I have everything lined up but need to go back after the porting is confirmed in order to get my gift card

  • Good to see they've opened this up to existing Telstra customers.

Anybody know if it's open to Telstra Business customers or just Telstra Personal?

  • +2

Just in case anyone is in a similar position.. I was out of contract on a BYO SIM Plan with Telstra and literally just recontracted on Wednesday to a $44/25GB plan. I then saw this deal and thought damn if only I had waited 3 more days!

I tried my luck with Telstra 24/7 chat and was told they couldn't do anything, but to speak to JBHifi in store as it this plan is a reseller plan only.

Went instore today and super helpful staff upgraded me from to the $45/50GB. No early termination fees as I was simply moving from one BYO SIM to another BYO SIM plan. Took about 5 minutes instore. YMMV but it never hurts to ask!

    • Did you have to sign up for another 12 months from the day you applied for the new plan?

  • Need the kind of help that only OzBargain can help with on this one:

I'm on Belong with my number of 10+ years. But I want the data AND the gift card (and it seems there is a system check that makes porting out and in <30 days not feasible anymore).

    So I'm exploring two possibilities:

    1) I'm thinking of setting this up on a new number and using this as a home internet solution in a mobile BB modem. I have an old Telstra 4G one (ZTE MF91) that I can plug this into but I would love confirmation that putting non-data-only SIMs into these devices actually works.

    2) I'm thinking of setting this up on a new number and using a little-known arcane process where you port in a number (my Belong) to override an existing one (new JB contract) mid contract (e.g. couple days in to the contract). Did some research which suggests it might be possible but would love to hear if anyone seasoned has performed such a trick and knows how to avoid being told they would need to pay ETCs for something.

Actually have a slight preference for option 2 as I would prefer not having to manage 2 devices or paying an extra $10 p/m to Belong, but would love to hear solutions on both fronts.

    Thanks OzB!

    • On the same boat. I have a spare number on ALDI $5 prepaid. Wish to know if I can port this to telstra first and when my main number is eligible I'll replace it.

  • ported this weekend

    50gb confirmed for 45 a month
used the voucher to get the galaxy watch for 399
good deal + $5 for the one number with telstra.

    • good deal

Definitely better than the $65 Plan.

    • When you say 'confirmed' have you received confirmation from Telstra or the JB salesperson?

    • "good deal + $5 for the one number with telstra."

      Please explain?

      • +1

$5 extra a month for the linking of the eSim in the watch to their mobile number. Means he/she can use the watch on 4G/LTE independent of another device (e.g. a smartphone).

Hi just got informed in store that JB hifi is able to apply this offer to existing Telstra customer. $45 for 50GB, but no gift card.

    • Does it say this anywhere or will they just know if I go in store? I can still get it on the 12th Oct yeah?

    • Is there any requirement to re-contract?

  • +10

I used this deal as a catalyst to get myself a new deal.

    • I'm already an existing Telstra customer
    • Went onto Live chat
    • Sent them the link to this deal. They couldn't match it online because its a JB Hifi Specific offer.
    • I looked at their current BYO Plans. https://bit.ly/2E7GIWW
    • Specifically the current M Plan which is $59PM with 60GB Data. Showing as already discounted by $10pm (Regular price must be $69pm).
    • Asked them to apply a $10PM loyalty credit in addition to the already discounted price and they agreed (after a few minutes waiting)
    • So now I pay $49pm for 60GB with Unlimited Talk and Text and Unlimited International Talk and Text.
    • Pretty happy with that. (I'm also happy to forward the online chat transcript if you want to try and get the same deal)
    • Hi, I was trying to get this offer from web chat. But the operator insisted that I'm not eligible for $10 royalty customer discount. I've been with telstra for more than 1 year. So could you please advise which operator were you talking with? Any transcript or reference number is very much appreciated!

      • Reference numbers added below.

    • Could I have your your online transcript please!:)

      • Reference numbers added below.

    • Could I have your chat transcript please!:) Much appreciated! [email protected]

      • Reference numbers added below.

      • Did you get the transcript?

    • So now I pay $49pm for 60GB with Unlimited Talk and Text and Unlimited International Talk and Text.

I want $29pm for 30GB with optional International Talks and TXT. LOL

      • I get 15gb with international for $30pm. Had it for a couple of years now. very happy with it.

    • Can you post a reference number

      • +1

I successfully did it on my wife's account aswell.

        Mine and my wife's reference:

        1-1712585152430 & 1-1711102669156

        • The best I could wrangle was $54 a month for the above plan.
          Going to sleep on it.
Might still be best to try and port out to pickup the JB deal given the difference.

Still $54 for 60GB + Peace of mind is a pretty good deal.

    • Absolutely refused to offer me the $10pm loyalty credit. Said it was impossible from their end.
53 minutes on live chat - best he could do was the offer online anyway he said.

      • how long have you been with Telstra? I've been with them 15 years. maybe its discretionary?

        • Only about 5 years this time around - NBN also. Yeah maybe the 15 years did it, and after 15 years you prob deserve it more than me anyway.
          Cheers

      • Have you tried multiple times on chat? You'll be getting different responses from different people

    Hi all,
Just thought I'd share my experience (though my points may have already been addressed).

Was already on a Telstra plan (contract expired).
Ported my number over to Voda on Friday.
Went in to JB today hoping to get past the 30 day policy.
I didn't say anything about being previously with Telstra or tell them that I'd only recently ported.
The salesman (using my ID) found my old account and said he could still see my number sitting on the Telstra system and that it generally takes 30 days for this to clear (sad).
Just finished up a livechat with Telstra who confirmed the following:
I would be able to set up a NEW number today (through JB to get the sweet deal). I can then port my other number back over to Telstra on either another prepaid or casual plan. They can then change the number of the new service to that of my old number.

PS: I also asked when the deal at JB would be on until and was told the gift card is ongoing (at this stage) but the double data (50gb) expires on 29/10.

    • I would be able to set up a NEW number today (through JB to get the sweet deal). I can then port my other number back over to Telstra on either another prepaid or casual plan. They can then change the number of the new service to that of my old number.

Nice. Any way to make sure they won't come back later to say it couldn't be done?

      • Hmm I probably should have kept the livechat thread for that. I did also (to sooth my own concerns) ask a friend who works at a Telstra retail store if it was possible who which he advised me it is a pretty common process they do.

        • I would be surprised it’s “common”.

        • I just spoke to a rep on live chat who told me that this was not possible, and that if I sign up with a new contract I must keep the number for the duration of that contract. The agent explained I would be better off just waiting out my current contract and signing up to Telstra in a few months time.

    • +1

Please make sure you have something in writing that details this in full. Having worked in Telco (albeit not Telstra) there are processes in place to do a commitment transfer (moving the plan from one number to another) as a contingency in case someone in sales makes an error (such as attributing the plan to the incorrect number, making a porting mistake etc). This facility can technically be used in a scenario such as this, however the support team are usually reluctant to do so (often claiming that it's not possible just to put the conversation to bed).

So, unless you have confirmation, in writing (ideally notes on the account), then you're running the very real risk of signing up to a 12M plan with a new number and being stuck with seeing out the contract. This will leave you with either having to use this new number, or having to pay for two numbers simultaneously, if you do not wish to lose your current number. I understand that your friend said that this is somewhat common practise, however they (as sales staff) would not have the capability to do it, themselves, and often the back end team don't listen to requests from such staff members. Because of this, I'd strongly recommend getting the writing in place unless you're happy to run the risk.

  • Wondering if anyone had luck with adding peace of mind on a $39 30gb byo? Rep said they ca not add 15 gb bonus and peace of mind as it will get rejected. Maybe i could try again in a weeks time?

  • Bummer, I went to the shop to sign up - but no international minutes is included in the plan - another $10 per month for that.

    • +1

If anyone is interested here is the terms and conditions (does specify the extra data): https://www.jbhifi.com.au/Global/images/2016/08/telstra-form…

    • Why not get the $45 Plan and add International Calls?

      • Optus has $35 30GB and 300 min int. Calls. The telstra deal would be $55, taking that into account with $200 would be $38.40. Hmmmmm I will never use 50 GB , so a saving of $3.40 a month. What to do?

        • +1

If Optus works for you, why not? Check also what you get unmetered as well, and if you have other devices that could share data which Telstra’s doesn’t.

  • +2

I signed up to the previous $39 Jb deal with 20GB. I contacted telstra and complained how only a few weeks after i signed up they are now offering a $45 deal with 50GB and kindly requested that my data allowance be increased. After disappearing for about 10 min they came back and said they increased my plan to 45GB. Needless to say I was very happy with the outcome. If people are in a similar situation it may be worth giving that a shot.

    • Yet some Chat reps says it's a Reseller only off and to go back to Telstra!

    • Same as me. Sounds similar to my situation. Time on chat and extra data offered still at $39 month
      I posted earlier.

    • have you got a reference number youre happy to give out ? im in a similar situation - want to try my luck with live chat.

  • FYI I signed up in store on Friday, the text message I received today only has 25gb total data and I'll have to go into store to get them to fix it up. Just noting here so that everyone checks their fullfillment message!

    • I'm going to try online chat today and, if that fails, go and see if the guy at JB can sort it out. If I end up with 25GB I'm not going to look any sleep really, as I'd never use that much so the 50GB would just be a bonus. I'm only pushing for the 50GB as others have received it and, at the risk of sounding like a petulant child, I want the same as others have received.

      • After a lot of stuffing around I got my data doubled. I had to be ridiculously assertive (almost rude) to achieve this.

        • I went into JB and they raised the request themselves (apparently, they only received the instruction on how to do this recently so couldn't do it in store when I signed up). Glad it was sorted for you too!

          • @concatenate: It turns out it's not sorted out. Telstra has phoned me to say the 5GB (to take it to 50GB) has been declined. I'll go down to JB tomorrow and ask the sales guy to sort it out as I am well and truly sick of dealing with Telstra or their agents. Optus may not have been perfect, but I found them so much better than Telstra in terms of customer service.

            • @slacktech: After doing nothing, Telstra sends a SMS this morning telling me my new plan is 50GB. These guys make Optus look competent by comparison.

  • +1

I went into JB yesterday and was ported to the 50gb plan without any drama at all. Probably resets the term of the contract to 12m from now but 50gb for $45 on telstra? I'm staying put.

JB Broadway. Lovely bloke. Laughed about how it was a difficult sell to get me on the plan. Happy days.

    • What were you on prior to that?

      • The one before - $39 for 20gb with the $200 gift card. They did some kind of pro-rata trick on my account so I am paying a bit extra for this month or something but I have 50gb for the next 11 days. Not a big deal for many but I use my phone for internet/hotspot so I am stoked!

        • So you were already with Telstra? Yet somehow ported?

          • @cruiseronroad: I think they have just confused the terms

            • @Strahany: The girl that told me it would work (and took me in to get it done yesterday) just texted me and said that she took her brother into Macquarie JB and they said that it couldn't be done. But really - my guy did it so easily on the spot. No gift card and all that but 30gb extra for $6.

So I guess it really is where you try it and who you get.

              • +2

                @krunchymoses: Sorry, I should clarify.

By “confused the terms” I was referring to your use of “porting”. That term means going from one carrier to another, whilst what you did is an upgrade/rate plan change. That’s why @cruiseonroad was confused.

                • @Strahany: Ahhhhh! Yeah I am appealing to those that already got their gift card but got the inferior $39 for 20gb plan. Seems rubbish in comparison now!

    • +1

Just came on to say thanks for saying you did this - I went to JB Hi-Fi Mile End and did the same yesterday for my two services without any issues!

There I was thinking I'd be out $14pm on each service, but alas no real issue and I get more data.

Now to work out how to add the calling so I can do my monthly phone home to the UK via voice rather than Skype!

      • Maybe try What'sApp or facebook calling for the old international calls?!?

Kogan pitch their lack of international calling as 'hey man, get with it - just use what's app'. Like as if not having international calls is actually a cool and modern thing as opposed to just being cheap :-P

  • +2

I ported out from Telstra to Optus 3 days ago to sign up a 12 months deal with Optus. Just this morning I contacted Optus, complaining about the slow network at my area, Optus waived the cancellation fee for me. Then I went to JB hi-fi, signed up this $45 with 50gb deal with Teltra, ported back to Telstra. Also received the $200 JB voucher.

    • Were you actually getting slow speed with optus?

      • Yes, the Optus staff admits they have poor 3g/4g coverage.

    • Which store was this? All the comments I've seen have stated the seeming impossibility of porting out then back in before 30 days in order to sign-up as a new customer (and get the $200 gc). Did you say anything in particular?

      • Brisbane's. Possibly because the Optus plan I got was a post paid.

  • Hi all,

Just wondering if I sign up to this deal and then want to sign up to another plan on Telstra within the 12 months is this possible, Or will I have to wait out the 12 months/pay an cancellation fee?
Looking at buying a new phone next year and will either go on contract with Telstra or buy outright on another deal.
    Thanks in advance.
