    • Given the previous SD deal got canceled even after dispatch, less hope

  • I was super late to the party. My arrival date is 11th-24th of June.

    • That's what mine says and I ordered at about a 6:15pm

    • I received the order confirmation at 6:14pm and mine says June 5th to 18th but not shipped yet

  • Mine shipped already
    Ordered 5.44pm

  • +1

Looks like all those who have ordered by 5:45 AEST time has shipping already.

    • Checks out, I was at 6pm AEST and nothing yet.

    • Not quite, ordered at 5:35pm and nothing still.

      • What state are you in?

        • Vic

          • @cj3: Hmmm…. then I have no clue how Amazon works!!!

            • @TomGum: I'm guessing it's because I chose expedited shipping instead of the normal one.
              No idea really.

    • Got the confirmation email at 5:39 AEST and not shipped :(

    • I ordered at 5.36 and no shipping yet

  • I ordered ~6:15pm AEST, haven't received confirmation yet.

    • I ordered 9pm Sydney time hehe. not shipped yet

  • I ordered at 6:38pm but still getting the "preparing shipment" but I do have an expected delivery date

If there is a "Bargain of the Year" award, the fact that they are shipping these and it wasn't a price error must mean this one would be pretty high on the list.

  • +2

my order is saying shipment eta 2 June :( anyone getting this???

    • +2

Mine saying will dispatch June 3rd with estimated delivery June 5-18.

      Ordered at 6:45pm.

      • Will dispatch
        Jun 3

        Ordered 6pm

        • same here, waiting for the dispatch.

  • Just realised this doesn’t have an ethernet port.

Has anyone had any luck connecting one of these and using it as a network drive?

    • +3

It'll be exactly the same as any USB drive in that regard.

You can connect it to the back of 99% of modem / routers for basic network functionality, or pull the drive out of the casing and put it in a NAS box.

      • I’ve never used USB. Always Ethernet. If I plug it into the USB port on my router will it function the same as a network drive?

        • Yes.

          • @Merlict: Without a lot of bells and whistles and also much slower.

            • @L0zBargain: Fast enough to stream media over a wireless network?

  • +1

I'll be super excited if they fill our orders I got two of these from the last deal if I get these two I'm ready to jump on the next good Synology deal :)

  • +8

man… wasnt expecting them to ship .. wtf im gonna do with 30TB lol

    • You won't have any trouble selling them to other members here, they'd be pretty grateful I'm sure/

      • yes, I'll take one of someone who ordered too many :)

        • I don't know why you're getting down-voted. It's not like there was a small amount of stock and you bought it all up, with none left for anyone else. It was based on time, not stock, as to when the deal ended. If someone missed out, it's their bad luck. You've purchased them, they belong to you, and you're free to do what you like with them.

Very fair enough to buy these and sell them again for a profit, if you find a willing buyer.

Dick move in a situation where there were 20 units and you bought 18, however.

          • +2

@snoopydoop: People that missed out cause they weren't looking … you snooze.. you lose.

For those shucking, here is a great comparison between the 10TB white drives found inside these WD Externals and a proper Red Drive. Admittedly the White drive in this review will be different from the ones found in the My Book we are discussing but it gives you an idea as both will be White Helium based drives.

    https://www.servethehome.com/wd-wd100emaz-easystore-10tb-ext…

"A burning question is whether the WD100EMAZ (Easystore white label) is the same as the WD100EFAX (WD Red.) What we determined is they are not exact matches, but performance is reasonably close to each other."

    • It's worth nothing that this isn't a WD Easystore, it is a My Book. Usually different/better drives are found in the My Book models. I'm not 100% if it is the case with the 10TB model, but definitely was when I bought the 8TB My Books.

      • +2

better drives are found in the My Book models

I think you mean the opposite?

        https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/6o0rf1/wd_mybo…

        • +2

Sorry, I got mixed up. I was thinking of the WD Elements drives which are available in the lower storage tiers.

Typically from when I did a bunch of research, all 8TB+ sized WD drives are helium filled and should be the same or similar to a WD Red drive of the same size which is their NAS appropriate drive.

The link you posted mentions them being similar to a WD Blue drive, but WD only make Blue drives up to the 6TB capacity. WD makes Red, Red Pro, Enterprise and Purple (archiving drives) in the 8TB+ range.

          • @BillyG687: Yeah they're definitely closer to the Reds (if not nearly identical)… Blue only go up to 6TB as you mention.

The main thing I was trying to highlight on the link was that EasyStore is a Best Buy exclusive (also higher chance of a Red) VS. MyBook branding used everywhere else.

As for Elements there are some reports of air filled drives but also lots helium so bit of pot-luck there.

Will be interesting to hear the stories over coming months from OZB users about noise and failure rates on these.
Excellent price for what seems to be a pretty decent drive.

  • Sad, forgot to check ozbargain yesterday. Missed out on the deal of the year.

    • Same. And I actually need a new HDD due to drive failure. Whyyy was this posted on a Sunday!

      • +4

        Hand over your ozbargain licences

  • I have two issues:

With the 2x5TB I got on Friday I now have 18tb in my home server. With these that puts me at 48TB. I am currently only using 4.5TB.

    1) My monthly data cap is 1000GB.
    2) SATA ports! I need a PCIE card and mounts to accommodate all this storage.

I guess I can start backing up all my ISOs.

    • The most important question you should be asking is how long will it take you to consume all the media you're storing and use that as a guide!

    • You already have 18TB, and are consuming 25% (4.5TB) of that storage capacity.

I would recommend only expanding the home server with the 3x10TB when you reach 70% of your current 18TB capacity (cf: when you read ~12.5TB).

It would be a waste of hardware and energy to have those 30TB spinning for nothing.

Test the drives to make sure no DoA on the 3x10TB though.

      • You can now set up your NAS to have some redundancy in case a drive fails.

  • Got one not sure I really need it as I purchased one when they were 230 back in April. Shattered I paid 230 and then this deal comes up

    • +1

$230 is still very good. This deal is a god send and no one could have expected it.

      • I also just received my $230 unit, bought two more. This way it averages out the 3 units to ~$160 each. Crazy prices

    • I got one at $230 as well, but 3 more at this price averages it out at $155 each.

      • Thats a lot of storage by the time Id fill that petabyte hard drives will be the norm

      • I’m also pretty sure you can offload your $230 one via gumtree for the same price if not more (especially if you provide unopened)

Edit- this comment was for quickshot30

  • +2

Mine shipped. I shipped to a US address since I'll be there in the two weeks. Should arrive tomorrow since I have US prime. Wow.
    Order placed 5:40 Sydney time

  • Will dispatch Jun 3
    Arriving Jun 5 - Jun 18

    Fingers crossed

  • +3

I think there's gonna be a plane heading to australia full of hard drives .. hope its not on a 737.

    • +2

      Max 8

      • +8

No, the deal clearly states max 3 per customer.

    CR Tracked
    Expected Cashback AUD 12.39

    • Just got my CR notification too. Ordered at 7:26pm

    • +2

still waiting on shopback notification tracking

    • Damn I didn't think these would be honored so I didn't bother getting cashback.

  • CR finaly tracked. $12.39
Amazon still stuck at “We’ve got your order”
Order email recieved @ 17:53 ACST

    • Weird my cashrewards tracked at 4.13 expected cash back…

      • +1

        I ordered 3.

        • +1

          Omg .. forgot cash rewards

  • I see they have also removed the Amazon Prime Eligibility.
Possibly trying to recoup costs for the mistake.

    • +3

No, that's because the units that are available through the page are some other sellers and not Amazon US. Those who are listing their units probably aren't set up for offering Prime or use a different distribution method.

      • +2

90% of Amazon comments here could be resolved by checking if it's the same seller as the OP :v

  • ordered 5.36 EST no shipping confirmation yet :(

  • I ordered some WD Red 8tb on Friday after close of business (for a Synology NAS I bought on Thursday)… luckily I'm able to cancel that order by the looks of things to see how this goes.

  • I am just so bumming that I didn't order purely on assuming it was a pricing error, oh and also because I am currently super poor

    • +9

Buy now think later the Ozb way. $400 drives for $130. No brainer. Ozb deal of the year if it comes through

      • Should we have a HOF for legendary deals?

      • Buy now think later the Ozb way. $400 drives for $130. No brainer. Ozb deal of the year if it comes through

        I love your thinking

    • If it was a pricing error the worst thing that could have happened is order canceled.

      BUT

you may have gotten a voucher/coupon or the order fulfilled.

Also Amazon doesn't charge until shipment so no loss there or having to go through a long/tedious process to retrieve funds.

When it comes to amazon it really is buy now think later as @cyrax83 above writes.

      • They also have a great returns / cancellation policy.

  • Is it possible to have split up the 10TB to have redundancy on a NAS? Because of the higher than usual reported fail rates but 10TB is an awful lot to have redundant as my understanding is the largest drive becomes the redundant drive.

    • +4

That does not make sense. The redundancy comes from that fact it is different physical hardware.

      • +1

Yeah that logic is like writing the same note on both sides of the same piece of paper.

        Your data is not safer.

    • Yes.. you can open the hard drive and split up the spindles in case 1 of the platters fail. Put the extra platters in an old hard drive to get more redundancy.

      • lol

      • +2

        hahaha.

The sad thing is, some moron will read this comment and actually think it'll be ok to put extra platters in an old hard drive 'for redundancy':).

        • Clearly the case given the down votes ^_^

    • Buy more drives. Have 1 drive as redundancy.

    • +4

Wouldnt partitioning a drive and having one partition as a "redundant volume" defeat the purpose of having redundancy in the first place? If your drive fails, all partitions are gone anyway?

      • Yep!

    • just press ctrl c and ctrl v, there you go you have a backup

    • There's no point splitting this single drive into two volumes if you're protecting against hardware failures. If it fails then chances are both partitions fail.

But yes, a NAS in theory will be able to balance data between this drive and another but how that works will depend on your particular product. There's no rule generically that a system with multiple HDDs will make one HDD take on function X and another function Y, so you'll need to see what your NAS supplier does and also check your configurations. Many NAS will likely have no redundancy what so ever and instead have all hard drives simply contributing to expanding the overall storage. For many people thats fine because they don't care if the data isn't backed up or the NAS itself is already a backup of another computer elsewhere.

For what its worth theres many options to how data is backed up. For my own home server I use a product that combines multiple drives into a single virtual drive and any time a file is copied to that 'pooled' drive the backend software makes sure that the file is duplicated on 2 separate physical drives. It means every file I add to that system takes up twice the space as I'm doing a 1:1 backup. If a drive of mine fails then any file that no longer has 2 copies has another copy made automatically to free space elsewhere. Other solutions work much different and will use algorithims (parity bits) to store a small amount of information that saves you on disc space and allows 1 or more drives to file and still have enough information to restore the file. Thats two options and theres more with completly different setup and completely different rules around whether certain HDDs have to be the largest, all drives the same etc etc.

In summary you'll need to read the NAS manual as to how the drive will be used if you're maintaining redundancy on the NAS.

    • +1

I assume you mean something like Unraid which uses the largest drive as parity, so you get the usable capacity of all other drives. Obviously, that relies on you having other drives. So if you just had:

      1x10 TB = no redundancy
      1x10 TB, 1x3TB = 3 TB with redundancy.
      1x10 TB, 1x3TB, 1x6TB = 9 TB with redundancy.

Standard raid or even ZFS really requires you to have all drives the same size to have redundancy.

      • Thanks for replies guys.

  • Any suggestions on 4bay nas with dual lan and usb 3?

    • +1

Synology DS918+ is crowd favourite and I love mine.

      • +2

Ooof so expensive. Is there a cheaper 2-bay option?

  • I ordered mine about 10:10 PM last night.
    Says Will Dispatch June 3.
Perhaps by then I'll figure out what to put on it.
    edit
Probably the best use is as a NAS backup.

  • I ordered at 6:53 PM VIC
    Will dispatch Jun 3
    Arriving Jun 11 - Jun 20

  • Ugh I've been looking for HDD deals for a while now! Didn't check OzB yesterday and missed out! :(
