    • Ippudo definitely counts as Shop Small; I'm looking at it on the map right now

      • yes it's on the participating businesses list for sure. whether Amex has it included in their system is a whole other matter.

    • I am screwed too.

I spent at ippudo Westfield twice today, but didn't get emails like usual, knew something was up.

I then checked again realized that Westfield location wasnt in the map lol.

Silly me, I searched ippudo day before and it came up with afew locations so i had assumed Westfield is in it without looking carefully. Bad mistake

      • Presuming you're in WA, you're referring to the ippudo in Westfield Carousel then?

Either way, both branches are listed in the shop small network, no reason why the cashback hasn't yet been processed.

edit: i'll probably give their customer service a ring tomorrow to get this sorted as I plan to use the card in some more places this weekend.

        • They mean the one in Westfield Sydney

        • Sorry I'm in sydney. Usually the email comes almost straight away for me so I knew something was up. I dun know if that's the case for you.. I will call up anyway to make sure. Usually they are quite good in manually adding it for you.

Pleasant surprise to see my union membership fee qualified for Shop Small this year.

  • +6

Myki and Opal Maps and Wiki list are up to date:

Please do comment with any successful or not top ups as well as the fee so we can keep everything up to date.

    • Please add Kent City News in the Opal list. Reference here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7923588/redir

      • No worries, added.

      Opal top ups:
      Marayong Friends Grocer, NO SURCHARGE.
      Kings Langley newsagent 3%.
Quakers Hill TSG Tobacco Station 1%.
NOTE: Stanhope Newsagency no longer accepts Amex. Went on Sat 9/11.

      • Thanks for these mate.
Just checking if they were happy to do multiple cards.

        • Yes all were happy to do multiple cards. Marayong was especially friendly and suggested I could do more cards but alas, could only do 4 since not all my secondary cards were targetted.

      • Cheers, updated.

  • Anyone else have a problem where you can't scroll down to see the map listings?

    • +2

      only on my phone,

      its horrible

      • +1

Yep on the phone there is almost no point using it

    • +2

Yep. Tried current location when outside and it refuses to scroll down. Not only that it gave wrong location. So many years and Amex maps haven't up their game sigh

      • Switch to desktop mode in your browser then you can scroll the list.
Still a PITA, but at least it's usable when on the move.

        • Thanks will try it out next time

        • Sometimes on the phone, the company appears in the dropdown when you type it out, but when you click it, nothing appears. It says no results found.

Are the venues that appear with the autocomplete eligible or only companies that appear and generate a search result?

          • @arcticmonkey: I notice that too. I think it must generate a result to be eligible. For some reason, it is able to autocomplete on places that are not even part of the shop small (maybe some are past SS places?)

            • @bluesky: It’s a shambles. One company I noticed wasn't eligible at the start then a week later I checked it's suddenly on there

  • Opal top-up at World Newsagency in Harbourside, 2%/40c surcharge. Credit received

  • Adams Pharmacy Chelsea working. No surcharge this year.
    List Updated

  • Made two transaction of $20, got credit for only one? Any ideas why this could be the case?

    • +4

Did you use the same card at the same merchant for the second transaction? if so ,there's your reason. 1 transaction per merchant.

  • Can confirm Prahan Convenience has myki top ups available, no surcharge. Went today, seemed to be a different person at the counter compared to the last year. Wasn't super nice but wasn't a total douche like the guy last year.

    • Yes I remember that guy last year, hence why I chose not to go there again. Prahran Central Pharmacy and Railway Hotel are nearby and they gave no attitude.

  • Never mind. Just saw @DrRalph's comment above.

  • +2

Meadowbank Newsagency top up opal no surcharge email received instantly for shop small purchase credit

    • Unlike previous years, only allowing payment using a physical card (so they can check ID)

  • The Shop Small Map is gone.

    EDIT: weird. It's now back

  • +4

Worked out my strategy with this. Load up the opal card I never use that had $3 left on it. They only refund to bank accounts. Profit!

  • +1

Night Owl Go Card machine at Clayfield in QLD suddenly out of order and they have no idea when it will be fixed.

    Probably Dec 1.

  • Interesting addition is Jocelyns Provisions for those who like up market bread, cakes etc.

  • Is it too late to save this offer to the card?

    • +1

Yes; that's why it says Registrations Closed

  • +2

Confirm that Roseville newsagent is still good with no surcharge.
New one nearby is LINDFIELD RAILWAY BOOKSTALL with 20c surcharge. It's very convenience being at station concourse right next to Opal pole.

    • I had success at Roseville today as well. No issues with 5 cards.

  • 379 Pitt Street Sydney, surcharge $1, immediate confirmation email.

    • +3

I won't do $1 surcharge way too excessive.

  • +2

Anyone have issue with not receive credit after purchase? Just had a very weird talk with Amex support.

I made 3 transactions at an approved merchant (it was a cafe on the Amex shop small map) over a week ago and got nothing since.

Just went on webchat with Amex and the girl said the transactions were by Google Pay. She said it must be physical card. I told her that not truth because first it wasnt in the rules according to the T&C, second, I made many other purchases using GPay and got credit within few days. After a few heat exchange with her, she backdown and said going to make an exception on this and manually credit into the card.

    • I've used 4 of my cards exclusively on ApplePay. No issues. Emails straight away and credits arrived. 3 different venues so far.

  • I already got my 5 x $10, but just got another email saying thanks for using shop small and that I can expect another $10. Is that normal and can I expect to actually get another $10?

    • +1

      fingers crossed..but doubt it

    • +1

Was one of your 5 previous credits a manual credit by Amex because it didn't post? Generally manual credits don't count as one of the 5 credits.

      • I didn't get any manual credits.

  • OPAL Got a small shop email confirmation for Friends Grocer near Marayong station from an opal top up a week ago. It is on the small shop map.
When you google the store, the store's google page shows its part of the small shop

Still yet to receive any credit though.

    • +1

      Any surcharge?

      • No surcharge, my bad forgot to put add the info

  • Opal: If anyone wants to try their luck for no surcharge in the city, I found a few places that are unconfirmed but are listed on both the AMEX and Opal retailers map

    Kangaroo's Convenience (Amex map)
122 Castlereagh St, Sydney NSW 2000

Jimmy's Newsagency (might not exist, can't find this place from a google search) (Amex map)
Shp: 1013 Str: 1 Market And George (from Amex)
Cnr George and Market Street (from Opal)

Henry Deane Plaza Newsagency (is this the place that's getting replaced by Hungry Jacks?) (Amex map)
8A Lee St, Haymarket NSW 2000

    • Henry Deane Plaza Newsagency (is this the place that's getting replaced by Hungry Jacks?) (Amex map)
8A Lee St, Haymarket NSW 2000

Nah, that was the convenience store. Newsagency is opposite Hungry Jack's

  • +2

I wonder if anyone gets the credits from Amex by buying gift cards from Emporium Gift Cards

    • +1

Don't bother anymore. They've changed providers so it will show up as GIvv now.

  • +3

Not in the spreadsheet but Chadstone Market (Asian Grocery) at 70 Batesford Rd, Chadstone VIC 3148 is part of shop small! It's located near Hog's Breath!
Minimum payment for card is $20, no surcharge!

    • No credit for me, nor for my partner. We're both registered and haven't reached the maximum 5 offers yet. Sales were $22 and $30 each.

      Has anyone else had success?

      • +2

        Oh no, that's terrible :(
Here's my receipt, transaction email, and shop small confirmation
What's the shop name that appears on your transaction? Is it also CHADSTONE MARKET PL?
Hopefully it's just a little glitch and you'll get the confirmation soon…

        • Thanks so much for verifying. I appreciate the effort.
Same shop name listed as yours, on the transaction. Shopped on Monday so might wait until end of the week to raise a query

        • +2

          It came through. Thanks again

  • Does it mean that there is no more Emporium Gift Cards and the new provider does not participate in the shop small program

    • Correct

  • +1

Saw chadstone gc on the map, anyone tried it yet? Do we buy it from information desk?

  • Hit and miss with the Opal top ups on George St in Sydney. 615 refused saying machine update, despite receipts clearly visible.

525 was fine, topped up today.

Can anyone clarify, if I have a supplementary card, can I go to the same places/businesses as my main card using this offer, or are they independent of each other?? Was hoping to go get another opal card for my next Sydney trip :)

    • +2

Can use supplementary card at the same merchant if you registered that card separately.

      • Topped up again at 525 with a supp. He looked at me and said only one top up lol. Wasn't intending to do more than one $20 with multiple cards. Guess the store has been busy..

  • +1

For anyone near Southern Cross station in Melbourne, Apna Desi (Jai Hind) Indian restaurant accepts Amex with no surcharge. Used it couple of days ago and got the confirmation email.

Not a great Indian restaurant but pretty cheap. Grab lunch and dinner takeaway for around $10 (after receiving $10 credit).

  • Sydney Lucky Charm Pavilion wanted ID matching the Amex card. Not cool.

    • +3

Google/Samsung/Apple pay is your friend there

      • Good point, worth doing to spite them.

        • That's the spirit! Go getem tiger

  • Can confirm 100% that Hey You! no longer works. I topped up $30 on 14th Nov and today is the 20th and I didn't get any shop small cashback.

    • Wish I realised before trying it again lol

  • ST MARTIN'S CITY NEWSAGENCY, 31 market st, sydney 40c surcharge

  • dumb question - how do you guys find which merchants participate
is it via this site - https://www.americanexpress.com/au/shop-small/small-business… ?

I reckon their map only shows some participating businesses.
When I search for a specific business name, it comes up if it's part of the deal.

    Confusing stuff…

    • Yes, the Amex map sucks. It only shows a subset of merchants.

  • +1

Would anyone know why a merchant has been active in previous years, and suddenly no longer participating this year? The merchant tells me they've never had to activate anything on their part in years past.

    • +2

Perhaps it is based on the $ of sales that go through Amex; if this exceeds a certain amount, then it is no longer considered small enough for Shop Small(?) Just a guess.

  • +1

I find you can't trust the map at all. I was disappointed that Cannings Malvern was not on the map this year when I have bought there in the past, only to find that they are included in shop small and got the credit.

    • The TopUps map or the Shop Small map?

      • The top up map is just for Opal and Myki, I believe.

    • Thanks for posting yoyo6. I also wanted to shop there. They were listed in 2017 but not last year also. Four of their other shops are listed. The map is hopeless good thing we have each other.

      • Had a conversation with online chat about Cannings. Several of their other branches are on the map so I asked would I get the credit for the Malvern store also since they are the same company and the others are on the map. She said it should be on the map. I said it was not but would I get the credit. She said I would get the credit for the ones that are on in the map. Doh. Anyone made purchase with one card and got the email. Will go again next week and use another card.

    • Yeah the map is a shambles. Last week breadtop broadway was on the list. This week I checked it wasn't. Wtf

  • Kensington Supermarket 76 Anzac parade Kensington NSW has opal recharge. 10c surcharge. Was kind enough to do 5 cards in one go.

  • What is the top ups map?

    • See links in the description

Myki Melbourne run: Confirmed did multiple transactions at Wu Lottery yesterday 60c surcharge. John was very friendly and patient, it did take a while as he would understandably serve other customers first as I had many cards. Loved a good chat too, go when you're not under time constraint if more than 2 cards.

Collins Place News and Lotto, did 2 on Tuesday a girl served me no surcharge was OK to do split. Did another 2 cards this morning 40c surcharge per transaction, man did split payments but was not happy, could probably be was already under the pump with previous customer he made to wait for a different type of cigs. Thread carefully if you have more than 1 card. Would recommend to spread out your transactions at various times.

    • Oh also forgot to mention Google pay did not work at Wu Lottery, we tried several times and it failed.

      • Went there yesterday for Myki top up. I asked for $20 and he asked AMEX? I said yes. He was surprised I only had one AMEX as everyone else had been doing multiple cards!

Note didn't work using Galaxy watch / Samsung Pay so had to use physical card inserted into the machine. AMEX sent me an SMS saying it was declined due to not entering PIN (even tho it didn't ask for PIN). Might be something to do with his Suncorp merchant terminal (never had an issue before with the other newsagencies, I did top ups at Collins Place as well as Docklands too).

        And yep, 60c surcharge.

    • I just did Collins Place News and Lotto. Made sure there was no-one else waiting so as not to inconvenience. Was charged 2% (40c) for each $20 charge.

      • I was asked for 2% surcharge as well on 2 cards. Someone might need to try one card at a time.

        • I wasn't charged a surcharge at Collins Place. But all I asked for was one Myki top up and didn't say AMEX or anything. I then went back with my second card later.

[OPAL] I've already updated the table but should report here that there's a new venue in Darlinghurst just up from Oxford St Newsagency.
Tobacco Station (TSG) Darlinghurst Shop 5 38-46 Oxford St Darlinghurst 20c surcharge (They wanted to see ID matching a card when I said I wanted more than $100 in total) I used 1 physical card and 4 ApplePay supplementaries without issues. Shop Small sticker is on the door and emails and credits received.
I also removed Connaught Newsagency & King of the Pack (888 Wholly Tobacconist) that used to be in the area as they have both closed.

    • The old man of Oxford St Newsagency was very nice, no surcharge. Highly recommended.

  • +3

    Opal run:
Epping Central Newsagency: not accepting amex

Eastwood Newsagency: 45c surcharge for opal with amex, sounded like there would be no surcharge for regular transaction

    Rhodes News: no surcharge

    Spar Redfern: no surcharge

Allied Mart 525: no surcharge, one card limit

City Mart 614: no surcharge, purposely used phone to avoid them from being able to tell that I was using Amex until too late

Haven't updated the table as I don't have email notifications enabled and no credit received yet from transactions on 20th

    • I have received credits for Rhodes News, Spar Redfern, and the 2 Allied Mart/City Mart.

With Eastwood Newsagency, I didn't purchase anything, so can't confirm credit on this one.

  • Always a nightmare dealing with philipino call centres at amex,

I had one of my Cashbacks reversed (validly)
however, a purchase that I was eligible for didnt go through because the above reverse

contact Amex, get told, yes we can see what happened, I will sort this out within 24 hours and call you back

    4 days later, nothing

call up australian call centre who says no notes or record of my last call made, and that he will put notes and add a manual credit

4 days later this has also not been done

    • +1

i find using the chat function more useful
