      • You didn't get charged for the first one right? I just tried for a 2nd time and still no charge lmao

  • +3

Never received such ebay offfer, but I really rarely buy anything from eBay. Won’t pay $49. Another reason stay with amazon which I’m happy with.

  • Does this work if you have already done a trial in the past? Last time they had a deal it didn't apply if you already did a trial

    • -2

how bout click on the link and see…

  • How do you cancel the subscription?

    • +1

go to ebay plus link. click 'edit membership'. select 'cancel membership' from drop down

      • What if you cancel the membership now after paying for the years subscription?

        • Mine started a free trial and I cancelled said it will still be active til 19 Jan 20. HTH.

      • Cancel now and still get a year? I don't think so…. Better setup reminder to cancel 11.75 months from today

  • I just signed up for $1 membership and immediately went to cancel. Was offered $30 gift card if I don't cancel and let it renew at $49 next year. So the next year renewal will be effectively $19 unless better deal comes along.

    • +2

if you haven't been charged yet, they'll cancel the membership you just signed up to. happened to a few people last time. should wait till they charge you before cancelling

      • +1

Yeah, I didn't cancel because then I wouldn't be eligible for $30 gift card

  • +1

I got the $1 offer via email. Signed up via the link and found that they started a 30 day trial on my account instead.
I've contacted their online chat and lodged a complaint.

  • I started the ebay plus trial during black friday, I'm still on the trial and I got offered the $1 promo.
Now I got a question, if I cancel the membership now, do I still get the full year of ebay plus benefits? I'm just worried I might forget to cancel it a year later…

  • +1

No dice for both my accounts. I see “start trial”, when I click it, it says I’ve already had a trial and add a payment method to charge $49 pa

  • Yup, $1 for me.. lucky me

  • +6

EBay just gets worse. Some people who did actually get the $1 deal are still being charged the full $49?! Majority don't get the deal in the first place… What a hassle. Makes me want to completely forget ebay altogether.

    • Mine keeps getting rejected lmao..

    • +2

it's a bit dodgy. it would show $1. then when you click the $1 link it would revert to $49 on the next page. it always pays to check at every step. luckily saw it and went out and went back in. clciking again shows $1 at the pay screen. think this is what happened to you and others who were caught out

      • You mean this warning?

You have already tested ebay Plus for free. If you sign up now, the annual membership fee is due immediately.

      • -2

I never received any discount this time. No matter what it still says $49 for me. Was with eBay plus last year and obviously after the first month it was a disaster. I've only bought a car part from them over the last year. Nothing there that I can't get from other places for the same price if not cheaper, other than car parts.

      • +2

Every step for me was $1. And still charge me $49

    • +1

See my comment below. They didn't see the warning on the payment page.

      Shonky ebay.

    • +4

I signed up to Prime and haven't used Ebay since. Amazon actually appears to give a shit about there customers and the service they offer them.

  • +4

Oooh, very devious. Take care if you have used ebay Plus before.

I logged onto ebay and there was the offer for $1. Sure, why not go for it. So I clicked to join, and then at the payment page there was a message warning me that as I had previously tested ebay Plus, I would be charged the annual fee immediately. I bet there are many who don't notice that and get an unpleasant surprise.

Why does it appear as an offer targeted to me if I can't take it up?

    • yes, you have to click that. it should still be $1

    • +2

dodgy ebay, i welcome our true overlord jeff bezos.

    • It doesn't. That's just more 'left hand out of sync with the right' ambiguity on eBay's pages obviously set up for the trial offers. o.O

The clause presenting immediately above it is the one which will take actual effect. It'll hit your chosen payment method just $1 for the year (.99c actually) for a year's sub.

  • +1

Just a heads up for those who were as perplexed as I was by the ambiguity in actual execution of eBay's $1 promotion.

Finally received the $1 Plus email offer with sign up hotlink about 45 min ago (0930181219). Just signed up for $1. Works from the hotlink within the email. Over the top T&C and ambiguity in pages presented in the process, but when all is said and done, it hit my account for just .99c with a rollover this date 2020. GL.

    • Did you use paypal to pay for it?

      • Yes

        • hmm ok i signed up with paypal (2nd time) too but haven't got any 99c charges yet. Got rejected on my first try too no charges on that.

          • @westzod: Did it eventually sign you up?

The system at that time had a non-realtime lag before my charges eventually showed up. I expect eBay were getting hit pretty hard on that $1- signup when it first appeared. I love Prime, but eBay Plus would never get me at $49. Double Flybuys points? o.O ROFL. At $1, what's to lose? CANCX is already notarised in my online calendar if it doesn't prove beneficial when the rollover comes around.

  • +2

Nothing for me - just $49. i already used the free trial & cancelled (and got lots of savings at the time)

    • So did I. Use the hotlink in the email. This offer doesn't exclude previous trialers.

      • +1

didn't get an email and the links above don't work..

        • Yer, the links on the eBay page didn't work for me either this morning. But, they appear to have been updated since then. Refresh your browser and keep trying is about all you can do if you don't get a push email.

    • same same.
The free trial i used (around this time last year..) was only for a month

    • +1

I'm in same situation but it did work for me. The link originally says $49 but then when you click on sign up, it tells you $1

      • +4

        nah no change for me.

To join eBay Plus, you need to provide a payment method. eBay Plus costs AU $49.00 per year. Your membership will be automatically renewed each year, unless you've cancelled it.

You have already tested eBay Plus for free. If you sign up now, the annual membership fee is due immediately.

  • +1

I just logged in and the big banner at the top of the page advertised this offer to me

EDIT: Checked PayPal and confirmed it was only $1

  • +1

Did not get the email. Then I logged in on ebay website and the offer was there, amongst other advertising. Just finished signing up.

  • +3

Be careful if you didn't get the email, just got off talking with ebay and they want the emails as proof

Was charged $49, despite $49 no where to be seen at the final screen

    • +1

I got the email but still charged me $49

    • +2

Didn't get the email. They charged $0.99

      • +2

I received the email, was charged $49
Those who didn't receive the email, charged $1

        Ebay logic

      • Did you use the free trial before?

      • Don't know what to say. They say they'll escalate the issue.

    • Didn't receive the email but just clicked on the advertising. Charged 99c. Not sure eBay Plus would be beneficial for me actually.

  • +4

Was charged the full fee, not $1. Spoke to customer service, they are investigating a billing issue where customers were not billed the correct promotional price. I used the link under the 'Messages' tab.

Advised 48 hour fix, name added to list.

    Sigh

    • +1

The same thing happened to me. Said it was going to charge $1 but was $49 instead.

Is there any way to lodge and email ticket with them or do you have to call?

      • I'm not sure if you can email or live chat them. I guess you would've found a way by now, good luck!

I was promised a call back by Saturday after raising the issue.

Sounds like there's a LOT of people affected by the promotion billing issue who used PayPal and at no time did it display the price (any price) as you were entering into a recurring billing agreement.

        • I got the promised callback, so good on them for honouring their commitment.

The resolution was ok guess, I got the refunded difference or will in 7-14 days via PayPal. Nothing more than that, so left a little cold on the experience.

  • Can you still get the $5 voucher with this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/503192

  • +3

Nice!! I received this offer in 1 out of 2 ebay accounts.

On a side note; I went to cancel my membership straight away and was offered $30 ebay gift card if I keep it (which I will receive after payment of my next annual ($49) membership)

So potentially, if I renew next year it would only cost me $19 out of pocket + the $1 = $20 for 2 years ebay plus membership isn't the worst thing.

  • +1

got charged full amount via the $1 promotion in email, contact them now

  • +1

Shows up as the regular $49 for me

  • I’m eligible for $1/year :)

  • +2

I purchased for $1 but didn't get charged, hooray?

    • +1

same, but I just clicked 'view invoice' in my ebay plus membership info page, and it says $48.99 outstanding. wtf lol…

      • +1

        Just got a 99¢ charge.

        • just got charged $48.99. time to refund via paypal.. idiots.

    • +1

i didn't get charged either, but half an hour later "payment declined and membership cancelled"

      • dont be surprised if you still have access to eBay plus even though cancelled, check some ebay+ deals to see if you have access

    • +1

Takes about 1/2 hr for payment to show up

    • If you check your ebay account it will probably be listed as yet to be invoiced.

Same thing happened to me and then the charge came through via PayPal about 10 minutes later.

  • I selected Paypal to pay that $1 I haven't been charged yet I have eBay plus….

  • +3

Yep I’m another one that got the email but was charged the $49 through PayPal. I’ll chat to them once in home. Hopefully it’s an automatic fix and the pending charge just drops off in the meantime.

  • +2

Didn't get the email. But on the website i get banner advertisements for $1, but if I click through they try and charge me $49. Talked to customer service and they basically implied I was making it up to try and cheat them.

    I'll stick with Amazon Prime

    • Same

    • Send them screenshots of the banner. Also I think it was email invite only.

  • +4

Yeah nothing for me :( I even went on chat to sweet talk the rep and they said to wait and see if I get the email later in the day

Told him that eBay broke my heart lol

  • +1

    Got charged full amount

  • +1

Just got my recepit for $0.99 paid via PayPal. Guess I was one of the lucky ones.
Does that mean I am safe to cancel now so I don't forget and get stung next year?

    • +1

Looks like it's safe to cancel. I just cancelled mine and got this message:

You can still enjoy eBay Plus benefits until 18 December 2020.

  • Prophecy is slowly becoming true… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7501137/redir

  • i just signed up $1 it says next payment 18th january 2020. am i missing something here?

    • +2

Sounds like you got the free 30 day trial which means you'll likely be charged $49/year from that date onwards

    • +2

Same thing happened to me. New eBay Plus user, haven't used free trial before. Clicked link in email, all the signup steps showed $1. I called customer service, they said it appears I was somehow signed up for the 30-day free trial instead of $1/year offer. They've raised it with the tech team and was told to wait until 18 Jan to see if I get charged $1 or $49. If the latter they will refund the $48.

      • I spoke to them online. the bloke gave me some reference number and said contact them at the end of the free trial period and he will give me a $48 voucher.

  • +8

Link on eBay banner said $1, but was charged $49. I then spoke to chat, they said on the T&Cs, it states it's only an EMAIL offer, that's why I was charged. I argued then why splash the friggen huge ad banner across myeBay enticing me to click on the link, that still shows $1 checkout, only to be charged the $49. They wouldn't budge, saying, sorry, T&Cs state it's only an email offer and I'm not on the list. Got a refund, guess need to wait 14 days now.

    • +5

False advertising / Bait and switch

      • +1

        Exactly it

    • +3

Same we should go ACCC. I'm going to go Paypal dispute

I've already lodged a Paypal dispute. If they are going to argue about the email promotion, regardless they should give out refunds.

    • How did you manage to get a refund? They refused to refund me

    • +3

Bastards! Screw that, I'm in the exact same situation - massive banner saying $1 for a year, signed up then charged $49. Luckily I took a screenshot of the payment screen where it says in two separate phrases that I will only be charged $1. I've raised a dispute with paypal and sent them the screenshot. Not wasting my time with ebay based on their nonsense reported here. Their email excuse is laughable, idiotic and incorrect.

      • +1

I didn't take the screenshot. I don't have evidence to show them it was showing $1….not sure how my Paypal dispute will go

Called Paypal they said if eBay doesn't respond within 10 days we win and get refund.

  • Got it thanks!

  • Is this $1 for 1 year? or 1 month? Id doesn't say on the email?

  • thanks got it on my 3rd account, 99c charge on my card account.

cancelled, bring back the ebayplus flash/fraud sales!

  • I received this offer via email, accepted it, rejoined Plus (previously used the trial), checked invoice and found a charge for $39.

Apparently I'll be invoiced early January and they'll automatically credit a refund to me after this occurs (according to the eBay plus phone rep I just spoke with).

At least I can take solace in the fact that it's not just me who's affected by this.

  • +1

eBay refused to cancel and refund the full charge against my PayPal account. And would not cancel my membership keeping saying the offer is only available to people via email.

However the promotion was available to me and was showing $1 before I signed into my PayPal account

This is accessed via eBay portal

I'm not using eBay anymore if they don't work something out

  • +1

In the same boat as a lot of people here and I received the email but still have $48.99 on my invoice.

Rang eBay they tried to say it's only available to those who received the message and email, I told them I did and they go 'oh, I can now see the message in your deleted items'. They added my account to a list but it's now a known fault which is being investigated by eBay. I took two screen caps showing $1 at different times- it's pretty dodgy Paypal doesn't show the cost.

Edit- just noticed my invoice balance is now $0 and a CC payment has been made with my bank account showing pending.

  • I received this email having never signed up for eBay Plus. I rarely buy from eBay, and when I do, I buy products with free shipping. Is it worth it for me to pay $1 for Plus? I know it’s just $1, but I hardly ever buy anything from eBay, and I don’t see many deals either…

    • +1

There's a few offers throughout the year open to eBay plus only, so I think $1 is worth the price of admission.

  • +1

I got the targeted email but when I go to subscribe it says I’ve already done a free trial and will be charged $49 upfront.

  • +1

Signed up. Was charged $49. Raised a ticket. Was advised this is a known issue. My name has been added to the list of accounts that have been charged incorrectly.

    theend

  • +7

So ebay has somehow managed to piss off nearly everyone. Either you don't get the offer, or you do get the offer and are overcharged.

Looks like Amazon will be getting a lot more business in future.
