    Limited edition sugar?

    • +11

Looks like you get a free container with your limited edition sugar. Bargain

      • Is brown sugar better than white?

        • +1

As far as I know, they are used for different things. Brown sugar is much richer, and more dense. It probably shouldn't be used in replacement of caster sugar and such in recipes, and I wouldn't suggest it in coffees or teas if that's your thing.

          • +1

@NatoTomato: Mum replaced the white with brown, seems alright..
I'd thought it's less processed than caster

          • -1

@NatoTomato: next promotion will say: Certified richer product with proven certification by Dr Nato Tomato! Brown bread is after all cheap bread where imperfections are hidden under brown food colour. Anyway do not take this as a flame just ask a health professional that has a bit of time to actually care!

            • @payless69: @payless69 What are you actually talking about? At least in baking, changing from white to brown will have a significant impact on flavor and texture for many recipes. FAST and Curious asked if one was better than the other; I didn't bring up health, and just stated that they were used mostly for different purposes, and can't really be compared.

              You alright there?

        • +16

Brown sugar has molasses, either retained during the production process or added into white sugar. It looks like white sugar but brown, and is often confused with raw sugar which is basically just less processed sugar that comes in bigger, tan-coloured crystals. Raw sugar is often considered healthier but that's pretty much a lie. Raw sugar can be used anywhere white sugar is, or also for aesthetics, whereas people generally use brown sugar for taste or caramelisation, e.g. biscuits, brown sugar Boba.

          • +3

            @hymio: ^ This person knows.

          • +4

@hymio: I grew up with real raw sugar on my porridge. It was simply bagged from the massive piles at sugar mills. Occasionally found dead insects in it! We didn't care. It was that unrefined, unlike now.

Use this for the stronger taste.

            • @INFIDEL: Sounds very nostalgic!

            • +1

@INFIDEL: We use to get the black sugar from the mills, before they sent it off to be processed into white sugar. Much more intense flavour, you'd think that they'd try and make a market for it. It gets sold on supermarket shelves in Japan.

              • +1

@cannedhams: Yes, I've had it in Japan. Sold for that flavour intensity, at a high price. I bought as I only needed a small amount of sugar for my coffees & was curious.

Product of Okinawa, where I've seen lots of sugar cane & visited traditional black sugar production.

Here we treat farming like mining - bulk product sold cheaply. No respect for flavour & quality. Those attract a premium price in Japan.

People there often produce for niche markets. They can be so niche, I wonder who buys some crafts.

I asked a rice farmer friend there, where he sells his rice… (He has about 60 small paddies, an expensive harvester, drying shed & bagging facility). I don't sell it, its for the family. A very different perspective to ours.

          • +1

@hymio: Brown sugar boba for the win

          • @hymio: It looks nothing like white sugar. White sugar is dry fine granules, whereas brown sugar is more moist and dense, due to the molasses retained or added, as you said.

            • @nepalesesquirrel: I was referencing granule size of brown sugar compared to raw sugar, using white sugar as a reference. There's definitely more differences in texture and moisture content.

        • Better how? It contains more trace vitamins and nutrients than white sugar, and hasn't been bleached, so you could make the argument that its healthier, but its still sugar.

        • Watch out everybody - brown sugar has more CHEMICALS.

I was as perplexed as you and I had to use my google skills, but I’ve worked it out; ‘FREE Limited Edition Canister’

    • +2

      Bushfire.
      Everything is limited edition.

      • +2

Except the fire. There's plenty of that.

The word limited is a marketing term to make money from dirt!

      • The word limited is a marketing term to make money from dirt!

No, from people, dirt doesn’t have money.

      • Bundaberg has so much of the stuff nobody wants they make rum from it. Chemically all alcohol starts off with sugar.

  • -2

$1.87 for a 1kg canister. Pour the sugar down the sink.

    • +22

      This isn't OzWaste!
Rather than encourage people to load up the sewerage system unnecessarily, give the sugar away to those who use it!

Workplaces, neighbours, schools, charities, men's sheds & neighbourhood centres, anywhere older people hang out drinking endless cups of tea🍵…
They will gladly accept it - to have with their drinks or pass on to people doing it tough.

Some people still enjoy a little sweetness😊

      • -1

Donate it to AA! They can ferment it, sell it and run their service!

    • +1

The original price was 75c more than the bag of sugar. Likely the container is not worth much. Will see when I pickup later.

      Problem with canister sealing
Might give away the container & slowly use the sugar😉

      • +1

These are tin canisters with a plastic seal. Lid seals well.

Wouldn't buy for the canisters myself, bought for the cheap sugar.

    • +12

My sink is blocked and I have ants in my kitchen now

      • You know where to send the repair bill…😉

    • +1

Please pour it in your fuel tank. It's like an octane booster, I promise.

*no one else follow this advice.

      • Cruise ships would go an extra cm with such a can.

    • +1

      $1.87 for a 1kg canister…
      That's rich people talk!

Try the Caster Sugar @ $1.37 with the tin canister & blue lid😉

    • I prefer to use it in a different way, get in the back of an uber with 2 other mates and when the music gets turned on and is at its peak, you all open up a packet and shake that stuff around like you are on the podium of a F1 victory! The uber driver will love it!!!

      • He will snap a picture, send it to uber and they will bill you $250 or whatever the cleaning contractor charges onto your registered card. Your choice.

        • +1

I repeat. He'll think it is hilarious and will give you an extra bottle of water on the way home for being a fun guy.

          • @serpserpserp: absolutely! I have been handing out bottles of water to good clients. If somebody wants to pay me 250 bucks to clean my car I donate a slab of water.

  • +12

Can confirm it's limited edition, none of my local stores stocks it.

    • Luckily my local stores have stock. Happy as I just ran out of brown sugar😊

    • Don't forget you need to enter your postcode / location to use the "Check stock in our stores" button to see if your local has stock available - as OP suggested.

Otherwise is just shows out of stock at some store, unless you're logged into Woolies😉

      • +1

It shows In Stock at my local store, but it's not available. Came back with 1kg anyway (not the limited edition)

        • Pity! Stock systems are rarely accurate, especially with old or clearance stock. And this ones limited…

Ask staff - many times they've found stock out the back or different shelf for me!

I rang the local store to put stock aside at the service counter. They've got "plenty" with the canister. It's always easier that way.

    • Yeah my local said in stock, but doesn’t actually have it.

      • Ask staff - many times they've find stock out the back in other deals!

Easier to call first to check. Ask for "groceries" to be put through to someone who knows the actual stock level.

My store puts stock aside for me when I ring. They've got "plenty".

    • At my local store at 13:30…
      None on normal shelf
but 20 on top shelf with no price tag.

Checked - that's not all the stock according to store system.

      • +1

Top shelf is meant to be for backstock, they don't expect customers to be able to reach up there.
What's probably happened is the shelves haven't been arranged with gaps big enough to fit the tins, so the nightfill staff just chucked them up top instead of doing a tear-down and rebuild.

        • +1

Talked with Groceries Manager. I think they've been there for a while.

There is no room on sugar shelves for this odd item. Won't be restocked so no reason to reorganize.

$1.37 1kg caster sugar is also on that shelf!

That's why I earlier pointed out it may not be with usual sugar products. So ask.

          • +1

@INFIDEL: The grocery manager should know that OH+S will crucify him if they see 1KG metal tins on the top shelf (where they can bean anyone not tall enough to grip them properly).

            • @ssquid: As you said - they're not there for customer use!
Stacked at the back half of the shelf, not liable to fall down. See my photo.
Quite easy to reach for average height male. No problem gripping & holding.

And those "metal tins" weigh… 200g extra. There are cartons of food in glass bottles on the same shelf (same in every Woolies I've visited) - which would cause far more injured than a 1.2Kg tin of sugar!

As I have recommended - ask staff to assist.

              I handed them down for
people - a pregnant woman and a man in his 80's. They were very happy with the price - I should get a commission from Woolies for helping sell them😉

…first you get the sugar then you get the power, then you get the women!

    • +5

Then you get the diabetes and other metabolic diseases. But it's cheap.

      • +1

How does one get diabetes from sugar?

        • +2

It's the main driver of Type 2 diabetes (sugar/refined carbs).

          • @mickeyjuiceman: Sugar doesn’t cause type 2 diabetes.

            • +2

@whooah1979: OK, sure thing. You believe that if you like, it doesn't change reality. But, this is OzBargain, where if it's cheap, it's perfect.

    • perhaps less teeth, bad breath, hanging stomach, double chin, no need to double up on diabetic facts it has already been pointed out, not a problem the sort of women (I guess a male trying to say something assuming old views) yeah the sort of matching woman is easy to find, 500 dating apps on Android alone and guess there some others on Ios and just reinforce your flooring!

btw there is a sugar making process with a stage of raw sugar then more refining gets the white sugar all the way to icing sugar.

Brown sugar is like going to a record store and see what clients buy what records. Sheep run after sheep. Easier to knock down few dozen energy drinks a day, at least you stay hydrated!

  • +1

First YouTube linked to should have been the Bad Boys clip:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MhQMlzkOEeE

I use sugar mostly for sweetening foods and drinks. It's especially suited to hot drinks, where it dissolves more easily.

    • +3

…you sure know your sugar! can you tell me about flour now?

  • +5

    Sweet deal !

  • Might make my way down in this hit weather for some sugar…

  • +2

    Limited Edition sugar?????

  • +4

Got it reduced last week…..once you take the lid off, it never re-seals! Ants love these "free canisters". :-)

    • Found no problem with canisters bought today! Clicks firmly in. Has a plastic seal. No gaps👍

Should return yours for a replacement! It must be faulty.

      • +1

Lol…I guess dropping it didn't help! Yep, plastic seal, but a bit bent out of shape…..

        • Lol! That was my first thought - did you drop it? Or was it dropped in store? Was the most likely explanation. Wouldn't fit well after that!

I ran out of brown sugar, so wasn't concerned about the tin.

  • These canisters - as shown on Facebook
See them in use in someone's kitchen

  • -1

Hi Doweyy, just curious is sugar the number 1 cause of cancer? Thanks buddie

    • +3

Some people attribute it to negative thoughts😉

Try Googling… Depends if you can trust some sites!

There is a big difference between correlation (eg increased cancer detected happened at same time as increase in sugar consumption) & causation (finding a proven cause of cancer)!

My Professional would scream at the class Correlation is Not causation! to drum that into us😉

People are often misled by nice graphs.
A graph may show increased drowning at the same time as increased consumption of Ice cream… But eating ice cream doesn't cause drowning. Hot weather is likely to increase both (known as a confound).

There are many confounds - other factors like genetics, other food intake, environment, lifestyle, income, etc that also affects the figures…

And detection rates of cancers have also risen because we know more, have better equipment to detect it, and can do something about many cancers. As a Dr said to me, what's the use of looking for an illness if we can't do anything about it!

      It's just not that simple!

No one would live very long without any sugars in their food intake! Sugars are naturally found in foods.

Best to limit added sweeteners like this sugar & check for it in packaged foods.
      Do your research.

The average Australian has 14 teaspoons of free sugars a day. That's at least 5-8 more teaspoons than the recommended limit

This 1kg will last me 6-12 months. Maybe I should cut back😉

      • +1

Well, that put a stop to the banter!

        • +1

People will always believe what they want to believe anyway😉

    • +1

No. Every cancer victim regularly consumed water and oxygen. It's a lethal combination with a 100% mortality rate.

    • Imperfect DNA replication is the sole cause of cancer. If DNA replication is 100% correct then there will be no cancer. And you'll also stop evolution as a bonus.

  • Thanks OP, will look out for it. Brown sugar is definitely a sugar that should be in a canister as it is quite sticky and messy and it tends to not be used as much as other sugars.

    • -5

It contains a minimum of 3% of dirt! A clear glass would inform the buyer better! Must give credit to Peter Garrett that CSR has a license to sell waste!

Then again prime class suger that looks the same as toilet paper has most certainly chlorine leftovers. If you want to eat it be like a sheep and do what the masses do, health care is free!

Thanks god one is free to eat what one wants.

      • +1

        Um… payless69, the sugar isn't for recreational use😉

Having visited sugar mills, I saw that bulk sugar is piled up in sheds & shifted with heavy machinery. As a child, finding dead insects in bagged raw sugar was common. There wasn't any concern. It showed how little it was processed.

As in most food processing, there are impurities. In the past stone grinding would often produce more than 3% "dirt" in flour!

But putting forward an argument without any references is pointless! Where did thus come from contains a minimum of 3% of dirt?

It is supplied in a clear plastic bag, along with a tin that can be used for other purposes. Up to the buyer what they do with both.

Maybe with a bit of craft skills you could turn the tins into a tin hat😊

        • just read the ingredients list. It is not enforced anyway, CSR has money to fight should a food inspector question any health benefit. Sugar comes predominately from 2 crops: Cane and beet. Cane is a grass, beet a root. Ok I have seen a few refineries in a few places. Largest byproduct of sugar is a liquid consumed to escape reality a legal drug with so much social acceptance that whole empires collapse not knowing the cause.

Europe sugar also comes in cube form. Much easier to have one in the pocket and drop into your enemy's fuel tank. A $300 car repair is peanuts to a family breakdown just to stay social!

          • @payless69: It contains a minimum of 3% of dirt!
            just read the ingredients list

Definitely NOT in the ingredients list! I've got a few packets here.

            Maybe check your "facts"!

And being from QLD, we grew sugar
cane in the back yard. I've visited many sugar mills & refineries as a child. Family worked on them. So I understand the general sugar process here & sugar beet in the UK.

  • not a bargain when you factor in insulin costs.

    • +6

Good thing most people's bodies are able to make it for free.

      • +1

Yep, that works for a while, until it doesn't. You may want to do a skim of the figures regarding the increase in (pre)diabetes numbers around the world.

    • +1

You'll have a lot of work ahead of you adding that warning to the long list of sugary products popular on OzBargain😉
