Good Prices! I just bought the 3600 from computer alliance eBay last week for $287 (same price here on amazon) perhaps they are matching that?

  • I've got a wraith prism cooler from another build, would a 3600 with wraith prism be just as good/slightly better then a 3600x? Aren't they like the same chip?

    • When they're tested at factory, the higher quality chips will become 3600X and be given a better cooler.
The ones which don't overclock as well will be stamped 3600.

      • Ahhhh ok thank you for the information, makes sense to do that

        • +7

          look up cpu binning

          • -7

@Neilzy: If that was the case they would be getting sued for selling a product that isn't advertised correctly

    • Minimal difference 200mhz better clock speed. Thats why the 3600 is popular, but at this price might as well get the 3600x.

  • +1

Nice! That's the old price of the 3600

  • Linked page says $379.28

  • +1

Good price on the 3600X but you're better off with a 3600 for well under $300 now.

  • Which RAM sticks should I go for an ASUS B450-I mobo?

    • The cheapest 3200mhz 16GB kit you can find. 3200mhz is about the sweet spot for price/performance.

      • +1

Something something timings and adjustments, no need for those?

        • +1

Plenty of DDR4 3200mhz CL16 kits around for cheap.

        • ???

          Not everyone wants to overclock.

          • -6

@Skramit: Your advice remains comparatively dull, especially for 3rd Gen Ryzen.

@jasswolf: Haha ok then….. backs away slowly

              • -7

@Skramit: Mate, when you're offering canned advice and someone comes and offers the same performance with the option of a significant uplift for the same price, just upvote and move on instead of making it about yourself.

                Cheers

                • +8

                  @jasswolf:

someone comes and offers the same performance

                  Fixed:

Someone comes and assumes the question asker knows anything about overclocking RAM, or has any desire to, without qualifying their advice. 3200mhz RAM out of the box is better for somebody not wanting the trouble of overclocking 3000mhz to 3600mhz. Your advice is terrible without asking those very detailed questions.

And suggesting the person look up DRAM calculators like its a piece of cake for a rookie who has to ask "what RAM do I buy".

Calling you out is not "making it about myself".

Overclocks to 3600 CL16 or better very easily.

Bad advice for somebody asking 'what RAM to put in their motherboard', which usually means a fairly low knowledge of computers and overclocking. The least you could have done is ask if they want to overclock then provide such advice. I gave the cookie cutter response because that's the most appropriate given how vague the question.

                  • -5

@Skramit: I provided a guide, you've provided yourself the permission to stroke your own ego… I already covered all of this.

It's really no extra effort at all to provide a handful of extra words and the material to assist, so I chimed in with the intent of giving you both a simple resource for what is a relatively simple task thanks to community advice and support.

3000 CL15 is basically equivalent to 3200 CL16, but even then, not all CL15 and CL16 have the same timings, and this can actually make a stark difference. A lot of RAM in these categories cannot overclock at all, let alone anywhere near 3600. It was easy to spot that you appeared to lack this level of knowledge.

You're the one who has gotten your nose completely out of joint, and if you took a moment instead of twitching at every ping and notification you get on the internet, you'd see that.

                    I'll leave it there.

                    • @jasswolf: Not everybody wants to overclock.

What part of that do you not understand? Your advise is/was terrible.

                      • -5

@Skramit: It isn't, and you've lost your temper ever since.

                        Walk it off.

                      • @Skramit: I mean you kind of have to overclock with ram these days. The motherboard bios usually will do it for you though (my 450 does)

    • Ballistix Sport LT 3000 CL15 or 3200 CL16 with 'AES' in the model number.

Overclocks to 3600 CL16 or better very easily. Use the Ryzen DRAM Calculator and its recommended guide to make it super easy:

Thanks! I want to squeeze the most out of my money so I might look into doing this. How big of a difference will I get with overclocking and how bad does it affect the longevity of the RAM stick? I'll be transitioning from DDR3 to DDR4 as before people just told me to just get the cheapest one. I think the RAM game has changed since then.

        • +2

These are binnings from a much higher quality series of RAM from Micron (Revision E) than most sold in this price range. As it's fairly late in the DDR4 life-cycle, vendors are doing their best to keep their inventory levels in check after has dipped a little bit in the server and enterprise sectors.

You're unlikely to have any lifespan issues if you're keeping the voltage under 1.5V, and the 'safe' overclock suggestions will put you at around 1.4V. Should be able to pick up a 2x8GB kit for about $100-$110 on sale.

Expect a 5-10% performance increase in FPS with most games, and maybe a smidge higher for general tasks. This is probably the sweet spot for 3rd gen Ryzen.

  • I'm getting expected delivery between Feb 25 - Apr 2. Anyone know if this is realistic, or if I can expect it earlier?

    • Getting the same thing. Must be backordered.

    • For me everything (which is plenty of items!) has been delivered on the mentioned day like a clockwork with no exception.

      • Great, one month to keep looking for better deal while locking in a great price

      • Awesome, good to know. Plenty of time to wait for deals on the rest of the components I need now.

  • I am trying to find out if upgrade from intel 5820K to this will be worth it for premiere pro 4k editing. 5820K struggles and I have to use proxy which is a pain. Does anyone have first hand experience with this and how much improvement is to be expected from intel 5820k?

    • This will be a HUGE performance gain. More cores, high clocks. Ryzen shines in editing and rendering tasks. Has intel beat by miles. As for exact numbers I would look at Blender performance charts - I am guessing looking at a few quick stats that you would be looking around 40% faster renders.

      • It is certainly faster, I have been trying to find out more info about it. However it means a whole new system from the MB to CPU and cooling. So a difficult decision.

        • +1

You may not need new cooling. If you get the 3600 it comes with a cooler in the box that will def work well enough even just as a hold over till you get the cooling you want. You prob only need to get a B450 board and 3000mhz DDR4 memory, which can be had quite cheap these days.

Plus you can sell the old mobo/cpu/memory to recoup some of your money. I haven't regretted my move to Ryzen, worth every cent.

          • @bunnybash: Great, already got ddr4 3000mhz RAM. CPU and MB is what I need then.

      • +1

        more cores

        5820K is 6 cores 12 threads.
        3600X is 6 cores 12 threads.

  • +1

Just a note that while the stock cooler that comes with this CPU is adequate, it is noisy.
I couldn't handle it during gaming and had to get a larger cooler.

    • A mate had the same experience and went with an upgrade also

  • +1

I would like to get this but is there any way to update the BIOS on MSI X470 without having another CPU available ?? I have a new one lying around and it will need it if I put a 3600x in.

    • +1

Some boards have bios flashback, meaning you can flash bios from USB without a CPU installed. Do a bit of research on your particular model to find out.

  • I have the wraith prism spare from my 3900x build. May use that with the 3600 in a secondary build.

  • What would be the best value motherboard to pair with the 3600x?

    • +1

I personally would go with a b450. There are cheaper but i wouldn't bother. Just make sure you can update the BIOS for Ryzen 3rd gen as these only ship ready for 2nd gen. Best way if you don't have an older 2nd (or possibly 1st) gen Ryzen CPU is make sure you can update the BIOS via usb port. My old MSI b450 gaming plus had it but not sure about others.

      • +1

Or just purchase the max model of the MSI B450 boards. No need to flash as is ready for second gen out of the box.

      • I suspect that most boards actually in stock now have a compatible BIOS. I bought an ASRock B450 Pro4 back in Sept and it was okay, BIOS 3.20 which the minimum for my 3700X. It's has now been upped several times to 3.90.

Wise to point it out though…..!

      • Just from my experience, make sure you read up on the motherboard if you are going with a b450, I think the feature required is bios flashbackplus or something like that, each manufacturer has their own name for it. This allows the bios to be updated on the mobo, without cpu and ram inserted. (this could be a tricky task)
Otherwise you will need to get a 1st gen or 2nd gen ryzen cpu and then update the bios, which is what I did.

Each motherboard has specs and which version it needs to be to support ryzen 3 cpu's

best to go with a b450 motherboard thats ryzen 3rd gen ready or get an X570 motherboard

    • +4

Not particularly the best value but one of the best motherboards for the 3600x is the B450 Tomahawk for about $180.

      • Or if you don't need everything the tomahawk offers, a Mortar Max at $30 dollars cheaper.

  • 3600x is back to normal price now

    • Damn, missed out on 3600x from amazon was 307 on Monday ha.

  • I'm on 1500x. Would the 2600 be a good upgrade at budget price? Also, would i need to buy a new mobo as the one i have is AB350M.
    Thanks heaps.

    • +3

The AB350M will be compatible with both the 2600 and 3600 with a BIOS upgrade.
I would recommend the 3600 but don't expect to overclock too much if at all.

    • +1

I would wait at least a few months.

I bought the 2600 at $185 of eBay during a sale. The 1500X isn't much of an upgrade - especially if it's for gaming. The B450M has more features than the B350M such as overclocking so that may be a reason to upgrade. The B550M will be released in a few months and that will most likely cause discounts to B450M boards.

    • There is a YouTube testing 3900x on Asrock AB350m Pro, and it works just fine. But you need to update the bios to the latest version

  • +1

Definitely should have just bought a 3600 on release. The prices basically haven't changed since then. Not sure why people are getting excited about this price though, as it has consistently gone lower for the last six months.

  • 3600 back to normal price

  • Im going to hang back I still run a 2500x and that seems to be doing fine so far I'm not sure what would be a good upgrade yet?

  • +4
  • 3600 now instock on Amazon AU!

Ordered but didn't seem to like Parcel Collect, similar to that Corsair DDR4 2666 as of recent except my home address worked fine

  • 3600x back in stock for $314.10.
Mod: could you please update the page. I got locked out from editing. Sorry mod.

    • Dispatched within 1-2 months.
Missed when it was in stock.. decisions decisions….
