    • Depends, are all your friends on iMessage? Have you spent heaps of money in the App Store? Do you use Mac at home? Apple Watch? Are you attached to the Ecosystem?

      • No, not really, Google Home, hell no, I have a Mac….but other than being able to airdrop shit who cares.

If we were gonna side by side photo quality etc, who comes off best?

        • +1

I know it's cool to hate on Apple but it's a downgrade in a lot of areas.

The A11 of the iPhone 8 is still comparable the flagship Snapdragons and this is the midrange Snapdragon so overall system performance is much lower.

Camera is a wash, the Flex may have the better sensor but Apple/Google do colour science much better so they probably look better to be honest.

If you're upgrading from an iPhone I'd say OnePlus or Samsung S10s are a better place to look. Or even the iPhone 11, it's priced well for what it is.

  • +1

Well that cleared out fast. Was just looking half an hour ago, was in stock at most stores around me. All gone now.

    • I still see limited stock.

      • I'm in WA, nearest with stock is 135km away, next nearest is 3300km :)

Bit of a wait for delivery stock too.

        • All gone in Brisbane and Gold Coast as well as the Sunshine Coast. Nearest is Toowoomba.

  • "Premium" 6.53" HD+ Display…

    • +1

It's FHD+ screen, not HD+. It is however lacking Widevine L1 so no FHD Prime Video, Netflix nor Disney+.

  • My LG V30 decided to brick itself yesterday. So I am weighing up whether to get this or go back to my old Iphone 6S. Any thoughts? If this is a serious downgrade on the LG, then I think I will just use my Iphone.

    • +6

I went from my LG V30+ to this TCL Plex. The Plex is bigger and has a great camera, but I missed some stuff that LG got very right on the V30+

What I prefer on my V30+:
      - always-on/notification screen
      - wireless charging
      - better finger-print recognition
      - better audio quality via headphones
      - heaps easier to find covers/cases

TCL does do some good stuff:
      - bigger screen
      - really good camera
      - minimal bloatware - except the Android 10 update apparently has some unwanted inclusions
      - customisable shortcut button

Battery life is pretty good on the TCL but I feel like the LG lasted longer on the same level of use.
      Both have wide-lens cameras.
Both are dual-SIM, decent storage, responsive.

For $250, though, you won't get a better phone. My LG is collecting dust at the moment and I'm very happy with my TCL. It'll take a minute to adjust to it.

      • +2

Do you think the TCL produces better pictures? That was one thing that always annoyed me about the LG, the picture quality left a lot to be desired. Also thanks for the in depth response.

        • +4

Yeah the TCL takes much better photos than the V30+. I agree about the poor LG picture quality.
          Glad to help!

          • -1

            @galachxy:

Yeah the TCL takes much better photos than the V30+.

In that case will be better than LG G6.

      • I dropped my v30 few months ago with heaps of cracks on screen. It's right time to change with this tcl steal.

I think v30 can play excellent music quality with wired headphones while tcl acceptable.

Tcl Plex have very high colour accuracy, eg white is white. V30 can only give yellowish white while other colours also not correct.

The free by headphones are quite good for movies and gaming.

Tcl Plex comes with free case and screen protector

      • TCL Plex cameras are 10 times better than v30 , very good at low light indoor environment like home, restaurant,…

  • Just bought the Reno Z for $343. Regret that purchase now!

    • Where to get that with that price? Care to share? Why the regret, though?

      • +4

The spec seem to be quite similar but this is $250 with bluetooth headphones.

Reno z was priced matched and reduced to $342. Optus is selling it for $360.

  • Thanks, just got one for a family member who was still on a Huawei Mate 7 from 2014!

  • +2

I already ordered the Mi 9T from the deal yesterday… Wondering if I should return it and get this instead?!

    • Mi 9T

      I think this is better.

      • +3

Mi 9T is better but at $150 less this is amazing value.

    • +2

Same. This is a really good deal for the specs. The 9t is the better phone but $150 better? Hard to say.

    • Same, picked mine up yesterday afternoon but haven't opened it yet. Might stick with Mi 9T for the AMOLED screen and Gorilla Glass 5… not sure if they're worth $150 but they're worth something!

      • +1

Haha yeah I keep going back and forth… the sensible part of me says "with that extra $150 you could just buy a new phone in a year's time"… but I like the screen to body ratio, AMOLED and will put the Pixel Experience rom onto it… might just be worth the extra.

        • +1

          AMOLED

Checked the Mi 9T in store the screen looks really good but for me just want cheaper and smoother.

  • Thanks op. Bought one.
Upgrade from Galaxy A50 as I have the international non NFC model

  • Thank op. Pick up one in Elizabeth store Melbourne tmr.

    • Grandma will be happy :-)

  • +4

Damn it! I have resisted soooo many great deals on ozbargain here for many years and finally I break my vow. Purchased one 😂 seems like a great deal. Thanks OP. Great find!

  • +4

Is the bonus offer of bluetooth headphones automatic or we need to add to cart? Am unable to find the product on JB site.

    • Was wondering it myself, I guess have to ask for it when doing click & collect in morning. No listing for BT headset on website so can't add to cart.

      • +8

Automatic. The boxes are shrink wrapped together in a bundle.

        • Thanks!

        • Thank You.

        • Guess I'll need to go back to the store to get mine…

  • +1

Sounds good. I was planning to buy OPPO Reno Z, now I think this is a better deal. Time to upgrade my Vodafone SmartFirst.

  • +6

With 5% suncorp jbhifi gift card, bring it down to $236.55.

  • Most Sydney out of stock have to awaiting stock.

    • +1

Artarmon and Bondi still have it
Edit - Never mind, I bought the last one at Artarmon, but Chatswood still showing avail - But for the white one though

      • +1

Thanks, some store suddenly have stock back. Bought the last white one from Castle Tower.

I thought the headphone is the small one didn't realize is the over head model.

Belrose Supa Centa , Leichhardt, Warriewood and Bondi.

  • Software updates and security updates….can we expect them?

    • +7

Android 10 just came out last month for it apparently but with more loaded bloatware that's set as system apps. Was close to pulling the trigger but the lack of community development means at best it'd be another 6-12 months of updates from TCL. The XDA thread for this device is completely deserted.

      • +3

This is why I have no regrets choosing the Xiaomi mi 9t over this deal.

        • How many months of updateodo you expect?

          • @Low Punt: I would expect around 2 years of actual updates from Xiaomi from date of release. But the main thing is Xiaomi phones with Qualcomm processors almost always have a decent developer community behind them. My favourite are the Pixel Experience ROMs which are generally hassle free once installed. If the device is popular enough you can expect community updates for much longer. I.e. extreme example but the venerable nexus 7 is still receiving community developed security updates even now damn near 7 years later.

  • +1

Cases are so hard to find on eBay….$20 for a decent one which would be a $5 for a Samgsung equivalent

    • Comes with a case

    • +1

Yet easy to find on Amazon.

      Prices are still high though..

  • What OS is it?

    • Android 9 in the box but it appears Android 10 update came out a couple weeks ago from a google search.

      • Thanks Hamza. I'm trying to find TCLs OS equivalent to ColorOS of Oppo and MIUI of Xiaomi.

And how good it is. Personally I liked MIUI better though using ColorOS now.

Any feedback from TCL users on its UI?

        • +2

It's vanilla Android; unmodified. or as close as you'll get without buying a Pixel.

  • Great deal but I won't be upgrading until I see a phone with 8gb ram under $300 AUD.

My Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X still kicking it but ram is the biggest choke point then cpu then probably camera then gpu.

    • Same phone. It's the camera that's driving me insane. Such bad photos!

      • +1

Yeah the camera is bad but I knew that going in but it is a stickler.

I have the Redmi Note 4 actually I keep forgetting that it isn't a 4X even though the ebay listing and I think external packaging or box said Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X but yeah it is a 4 my bad.

My model has 4.00GB ram / forgot which soc but it says Octa-core Max 2.00Ghz / Android Version 7.0 NRD90M / Android security patch 2018-12-01 / and MIUI GLOBAL 11.0.2 Stable 11.0.2.0(NCFMIXM) / 64.00GB internal storage.

I have updated to latest not running any custom ROMs.

    • We would all love phones with 8gb ram for $300 or under, even 6gb is hard to find for that unless you import grey. I use a RN 4 with only 3gb at home as a secondary phone and still works well for me.

Just wondering what software Android version/Mi Ui version/security date is your RN 4X updated to ( imagine you have updated to latest and not running custom rom )?

      • +1

Fyi: the OTA standard for me is: SD: security patch: 2018-12-01; Android 7NRD90M; miui: 11.0.2

        • Thanks. My RN4 is exactly same software and for a SD625 with 3gb ram still running smooth

without ever needing to do a factory reset. First phone I have used over a year

( 2yrs for this phone now, part time only ) without feeling the need to do a factory

          reset to restore some performance.

      • +1

I know that is why it is a waiting game no rush for me unless I break my phone early.

    • Unless you have dozens of apps open I don't see why RAM is such a choke point, especially on a budget phone like yours. My Pixel 2 is still silky smooth with 4GB RAM and HDR+ Enhanced photo is still processed fast enough, equivalent or slightly faster compared to the Pocophone F1 that has 6GB RAM and SD 845.

      • Even a single app, if it's the right one, will choke ram.

I only have 10 tabs open in my browser, and it still needs to reload most pages when I switch tabs in the same app.

        • Then it's a matter of optimisation rather than RAM. My Pixel 2 sure does reload occasionally but 1) it's super fast 2) definitely handle a lot more than your case, as I usually have 5 tabs on Chrome + 6-7 on another browser + Facebook + Gmail before it starts reloading. Same 4GB of RAM.

  • I have a moto G6 plus bought 1.5 years ago, still running fine. Just wondering if this will this be an upgrade or I just be happy with it?

    Gurus… thoughts please

    • Unless you really want bigger screen and better camera, I think keep using your G6 Plus a bit longer with that nice clean

Android. Also the Android 10 is not so different as the jump from 8 to 9 was, just my opinion.

Only one Moto App on System for Moto, and fairly useful too.

Not a Guru, but still love my older Moto G5 Plus lol.

      • thanks. I think i shouldn't succumb to impulsive buying mentality.

G6 Plus still goes one… no issues. Even the battery is fine.

        • +1

In saying that I like having more than one phone to use as I use a second at home mainly on wifi and a third older one often to supplement data using as hotspot etc.

Sometimes fun to buy a new phone, but keeping the older one as back up and/or to juggle so you have more/longer battery life/health in the short and long run.

This TCL is a bargain, as long as you can justify the $ outlay.

          • +2

@ozhunter68: lol…rethinking now.recently I dropped the phone and shattered the back camera glass. I got the lens cover changed myself. But the images are not sharp as it was. For $250, as you said, this seems to be a bargain. Probably I can donate the old one or keep it as the backup.

            thanks.

            • @MondaySleeper: I think you will enjoy the good camera(s) then, always fun to use a new phone,

especially stepping up to a SD675 and 6 GB ram. Maybe look around for a solid case to protect

              all that glass lol.

    • same, got the 6 plus but my battery is down to nightly charges, and frankly im not a fan of the photo quality.

maybe time to upgrade to this or the Mi9T i think.

  • None in SA of course

    • Read every post, thought 'i'm in'..2nd to last post ..none in SA :( Definitely statewide / can't get it delivered?

      • I can get delivered but wanted it before i go international this Sunday for a few weeks. My Pixel 2 i have a sim stuck in it so not gonna work with international sims

        • +2

It was in stock at half the SA stores when I posted but looks like they are all cleared out unfortunately.

Try giving a few a call tomorrow though, might get lucky.

          • +2

@hamza23: Probably not a lot of stock due to Toll getting wrecked by hackers, no computer systems cant deliver 90% of your packages

        • Would pay to check the xiami 9t was showing no stock anywhere in SA but Munno Para had 3 when i went there today, looks like i will go back tomorrow and have a look for this one lol

          • @d1strbd: They had them.

            • @wrjcu: Which store? I might go get one lol

              • +1

@d1strbd: Munno Para, sorry late reply. Getting used to phone.

                • +1

@wrjcu: All good. I'm still so unsure (currently have a galaxy a70 which I would sell and end up with some money in my pocket and a slightly worse phone)

      • I just got JB at Modbury to hold me one so there is stock.. website is not correct.

    • Its only $7 bucks for express delivery…. can't be that stingey surely? lol your time and pretrol alone is worth that much.

      • Will that delivered before Friday. From what it reads 26th Feb is 2 weeks

        • I just received my PLEX an hour ago, fast express.

Seems very very similar to the Umidigi Power 3 (I recently got mine, its amazing), pretty sure they use the same screen, same size, resolution and punch hole location etc.
Umidigi power 3 has much bigger battery though and for $200 after cashback, I'm loving it. I'd highly recommend the Umidigi Power 3 for anyone that doesn't mind waiting :)

    • +4

Lesser ram (4gb), lesser storage (64gb), Mediatek chipset, effectively no warranty. No thanks.

      http://gsmversus.com/alcatel-tcl-plex/umidigi-power-3/

    • +4

Not same screen, this is as good as it gets for LCD (HDR capable) and the Power 3 is an average screen. If you have to give a numerical value Umidigi screen is 6 and this is 8-9 for LCD.

The SoC is also faster. I wish Umidigi would start using P90 or G90T on their phones. P60 and P70 are now old and been used in half a dozen of their phones already.

  • +1

Any GCAM app available for this phone?

Still using LG G6 not sure worth the upgrade.

  • I'm hoping the Mi 9 Lite gets a deal this worthy…. I don't want to shell out $350!

  • can you root this phone?

    • +14

If you hold it at the right angle i suppose its possible

    • Jokes aside, a proper response to this very valid question would be great.

    • +1

I'm going to assume no. Really can't find any solid info about it, but looking like might have a locked bootloader (and possibly not even access to fastboot at all).

XDA TCL Plex is a ghost town, less on there than TCL has specs on its product page.

Magisk is a must for any phone I buy so not sure this phone is for me. The scarcity of cases and tempered glass protectors isn't great either.

  • Great price
