May 6 Updates:

  • All orders now shipping within 1 day.
  • Our customer service team is about 2 days behind on emails and are doing their best to catch up (all are doing overtime and we have just hired more people too).
  • Thank you EVERYONE for your patience and overwhelming support while we have been scrambling to get these orders out.

Deal Notes:

In case you're unfamiliar with Amino Z, we're a supplement manufacturer/retailer. And now we're making hand sanitiser in our facility (who'd have guessed). All the obvious reasons why with the gyms being closed.

We are again doing this completely in-house. There's no importing of product and everything is local (ingredients, labour and packaging). Frankly we're just making basic, no-frills hand sanitiser. This is the TGA COVID-19 formulation.

Here's the rundown:

  • It's in an ugly plastic jerry container (We found these after literally days of hunting down containers)
  • I personally created the sticker in Photoshop (Hence why no-frills as this represents the extent of my graphics design skills. As a side note, I am still very jealous of the artwork skills of some of the distilleries.)
  • It's 80% ethyl alcohol (ethanol) with distilled water and propylene glycol (1.45% v/v) and hydrogen peroxide (0.125% v/v). This has been updated as per the TGA guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic here. This is a slightly viscous liquid formula and is not a gel.
  • It's 100% Australian: We make it in Sydney. Ingredients are all Australian sourced. The bottles are manufactured in Victoria. The labels are printed in Queensland.

The deal is $19.95 each (that's for 1 Litre). Order 4 or more and get free shipping, otherwise shipping is $9.99 Australia Wide (or you can pickup for free).

Plus you'll get $5 back as store-credit per unit. It will be credited to your email once the order ships out and can be used as a discount on any future purchase. Perhaps some added motivation to get back to the gym when they reopen? :)

Orders will now ship within 1 day.

As compared to when we initially launched the deal on April 14th, our cost prices have gone up as I've had to scramble to find more ingredients. However since there will be a slightly longer lead time than last time, I figure it's only fair to keep the deal identical. Plus the previous experience was terrible for some people who spent hours trying to purchase, I cannot in good faith increase this price for all of those who missed out. Instead the only change is that we're accepting credit card (MC/VISA/AMEX) payment directly (using eWay) as to avoid the higher fees of other payment processors (ie. cut out the middle man so we can still make this feasible).

I am aware there have been a number of hand sanitiser deals on Ozbargain lately. I'm hoping that this represents good value given the costs of the components we had to source. Happy to answer any questions!

  • Thanks. Got 4 to share with family who work in healthcare but couldn't get any personal supply.

    • Nice one thanks for the order!

  • Bought from Aminoz in the past and they were good and reliable.

    • Thanks zDave, really appreciate the support and upvote!

  • good stuff guys! ordered - can't wait to see the custom sticker part, awesome :)

    • Oh boy don't get your hopes up about the sticker, hah! Thanks for the order!

  • If you order six you get FASTWAY delivery… Is that much faster than regular FAST & FREE?

    • Don’t bother waiting for my fastway delivery that was supposed to be delivered 2nd April

      • Fastway are having delays, but it shouldn't be that long. Can you shoot us through an email so our team can follow up or send a replacement? There may be a slight delay in getting back to you FYI, but we are catching up.

        • Jay
  • So is this a liquid or a gel? I don't like the gel.

    • +1

"This is a slightly viscous liquid formula."
Sounds like it's best suited for a spray bottle unlike the Dettol gel.

But do await response from the Amino Z team for confirmation.

    • I have sent the OP a request to clarify the viscosity using aquium as a base line will it be as viscous or less viscous. Given the number of orders not sure if they may be able to do a variant (one for pumpers, one for sprayers?) - I have asked that also, not sure if the WHO recipies allow for this?

      • +1

This will be less viscous. I would not consider this one to be a gel. At this stage we won't be able to a gel given the order volumes I'm afraid.

        • Jay
    • This will be a liquid and only slightly more viscous than water as there is only a small amount of prolyene glycol in there. Best used with a spray bottle (or pump if you prefer).

      • Jay
  • +1

Could this be used as the main ingredient to make a further solution of sani?
Such as adding aloe vera to make it gelly.
Want to get a similar consistency as the Dettol sani's.

    • +1

      Interested to know this also.

    • +4

You can, but just keep in mind that once you start adding things to this, the concentration of the original ingredients decreases. If you're adding drops of whatever to this, it won't matter as much, but once you start to add 100s of mL to 1L then you're diluting it too much and the solution looses it's intended efficacy and purpose.

Also, it's not easy change the viscosity, it takes trial and error for formulation chemists, and most likely yourself, to get to the desirable point. And with a mixture (at optimal concentration) as your starting point, you are only going to make more compromises in efficacy for "feel".

In short, you can do it, but best to buy dettol to save yourself the hassle, :) or alternatively source the starting materials yourself.

      • +2

Yes that was my main concern further diluting the alcohol content. $20 for 100% isopropyl on ebay or $10 at bigw if instock. I found a cool website that calculates the formula if anyone is interested in making their own. Add your own essential oils for a nice scent.

        • C1V1=C2V2

Probably takes longer to use their site than jot down this.

I say making this as a backyard chemist is fine if it's for personal use and you're informed/educated/aware of risks/use PPE

      • +1

Based on the comment from OP above, sounds like prolyene glycol is the thickener, which is only 1.45 v/v (14.5ml) . You can pick it up around the place for not a lot of cash about $7 for 125ml. If I want to make a thicker gel is it just a case of adding say 30ml per litre? (I picked up 4 litres). Note I'm not worried about the dilutive effect of 30ml (by my calcs 100 ml would only bring it back to 72%) Anyone know what other concentrations are??

        • +1

Leaving this here in case anyone is intetrested. https://thethingswellmake.com/diy-hand-sanitizer-that-actual… Good discussion about how someone sles has attempted to thicked liqiid sanitiser into a gel.

          • @javajo: Interesting, thanks. Liked the bit about the 3 hours stirring to get a gel consistency. Unfortunately, as the chemistry boffin said, that was because by then a lot of the alcohol had evaporated, thereby making the "sanitizer" next to useless.

        • I think ppl should leave this to the pros and not back yard chemists in blogs in case you poison yourself dead even before the COVID19 get you. In the link you posted the person finally made a gel using PAA, but also used triethanolamine. TEA is an irritant and you don't want long term exposure on your skin or accidentally in your eye. The break down products from TEA also includes formaldehyde!

Edit: Just to clarify, TEA can be safely used in cosmetics, but not sure if the concentration used there is within safe limits. Just goes to show that concentration matters for all things chemistry. H2O is dangerous if you have much of it and can kill! 😜

          • @assailantsky: I'll admit i stopped searching after reading that article. I dropped it into the 'too hard' basket. I might get a couple of spray bottles or see how it goes in a pump. I thought gel might be better for the kids. Either way I will have 4 litres so probably dont need to stress too much about excessive use or a bit of wastage!

  • Shocked it is still in stock to be honest.

    • +1

Ethanol is easier to source than isopropyl for the time being. If they have teamed up with the right supplier, they are doing very well.

      • How long until hand sanitisiers are back in stores do you think?

        • Not sure, a pharmacy I asked said 3-4 weeks a few days ago but I would take that with a grain of salt.

Even when they do come into stock, Aqium hand sanitiser for example is only 70% ethanol. The WHO formula calls for 80%.

I don’t know if the +10% makes a huge difference against the virus. Someone else could probably chime in.

          • @emoticon: Interesting, yeah I've only seen a handful of sanitisers have the 80% requirement. Just trying to work out if I should stock up or 1-2L is enough! I know Aqium is usually only about $16-$18 per L at chemist warehouse.. but I can't afford to wait 3 months (I probably have higher than normal social interactions due to the nature of my essential work).

Anyway, this has 20,000 clicks and they are only making 2,000. Daresay they will have some cancellations or long wait times.

            • @AjsGuns: Yeah the 80% ethanol I’ve only seen at one other place. Manly Spirits.

Wasn’t quite sure why but @thargelios answered that below… the 80% recommendation is probably just to extend shelf life.

Which makes sense to me, ABC news is saying experts agree 60-80% alcohol is fine.

Aqium is fine, wouldn’t worry about it being 70%.

Yeah Aqium and Purell have been sold out for a long time, and chemist warehouse is probably the first place people look so probably won’t last long.

I would probably just buy the 2L then, shipping would cost the same vs just buying 1L plus you never know when pharmacies will get them back in stock.

          • +1

@emoticon: Always used 70% ethanol in labs to sterilize lab benches. So I'd say 70% is ok.

80% likely gives it a longer shelf life though due to evaporation and slow use at home etc.

            • @thargelios: Ahh yup that makes sense to me. I always wondered why. A lot of news articles say 60% to 80% ethanol is effective but then I read the TGA and WHO guidelines and it’s always at the higher end.

              Now I know why.

Makes me feel better about the other hand sanitisers I bought via ozbargain - 6x 500ml - one place was 70% and the other 75%

              https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-02/coronavirus-hand-sani…

            • +1

@thargelios: You should check with your lab manager, are they 70% w/v, they are equivalent to 80% v/v! Many confusion around that in bio labs, and many labs still get this wrong. No such problems in our labs! Lol

    • As was I, but the website was unable to be ordered from for well over an hour. We're now well and truly sold out though.

      • Jay
  • Just ordered 2L via Fastway. Hopefully they would ship out soon. Cheers.

    • Thanks for the order!! We'll be working overtime to get these out ASAP.

Just confirming this will be in a gel like substance and not liquid/have to use a spray bottle?

    • +1

Wondering this aswell as the bundle comes with a spray bottle but OP mentioned viscous liquid.

@Jay can you please clarify mate?

    • +1

Don't hold me to this, because I have no idea - the OP said it would be a vicious liquid. However, most distilleries are providing a liquid spray type substance.

      • Thats how I read slightly viscous too.

      • +1

Yep that makes sense. Was hoping it was a gel so I could use it in the car. I use a spray bottle atm but it would be more convenient if I could refill my detol pump bottle

      • If it's a spray I'll be cancelling

        • toss them an email, let us know :)

          • +1

@AjsGuns: Did we get a definitive answer to this?
I was thinking I'd be filling my little dettol bottle, but if it's too liquid-y, could be hard to use?

            • @spa: nope, just that it's "slightly viscous" which makes me think it'll be more liquidy than gelly.

    • I would consider this a liquid and definitely not a gel. If this is an issue for anyone please just shoot us over a message, happy to refund. It will be slightly more viscous than water, but not by much. It's the formulation that the TGA has provided and there's a bit of propylene glycol, but not enough to consider this to be a gel.

      • Jay
      • What mini bottles/sprays would suit this liquid for on the go etc?

        • Just like the ones we had on our site here: https://www.aminoz.com.au/simple-sanity-spray-bottle-100ml.h…

If you want to add it, just shoot over a message to our team, we can do them for $3.95 (this was the bundle offer with the sanitiser).

          • Jay
          • @aminozcomau: I have messaged via here and email but no response yet regard to purchasing the spray bottles.. i was not aware they were bundle offer and due to slow site from the initial deal had to resort to buying Sanitiser first :/. Any possibility i can add just the sprays with code (@3.95 a spray) without additional shipping fee on the site? Thanks

      • +1

Is there something we can add to make it a gel-like substance?

        • +1

You could possibly use aloe vera gel. Just ensure you don't add too much as to dilute the alcohol concentration below the WHO recommendation.

    • Good you found the other post.

      Jay,
Could you please respond to this question ?

    • This one we still have a limited quantity remaining. Another member of ozbargain posted this up with a standard coupon code that we advertise on our website. You can grab it, though the price point is not quite as aggressive as this deal I posted yesterday.

      • Jay
  • Ordered. Thanks!

    • Thanks for the order!

      • Jay
  • I placed my order a few hours ago. It took a long time just to get to the checkout much less make it through, I can only imagine the hammering the website was getting!

Thanks for making this available, OP. Greatly appreciated, and I'm especially impressed with how readily you made the decision to increase the concentration. Thanks again.

    • +1

Thanks kryss, most appreciated! And yes I think the revision of the formulation was a worthwhile change, thanks for the feedback!

Ordered one. Not a greedy (profanity) like a lot of others on here.

Thanks for the order FlopHunter! Practically all the orders were very reasonable in quantity, it's really great to see.

    Hey OP,
I am curious if it's a gel or liquid suitable for spray bottle.
    Thanks.

    • Thanks for the query. This will be a liquid, only slightly more viscous than water, but definitely not a gel. I would suggest a spray bottle (we paired it up with spray bottles on the website - shoot through a message if you wanted to add one to your order, we discounted these to $3.95 each with the sanitiser).

      • Jay
      • Good. Thanks. Now the only problem is "Out of Stock".

        • We sold out of the allocated quantity overnight unfortunately :(

          • Jay
          • @aminozcomau: I hope you will come back in few weeks with another deal once all these order are shipped. :)

  • added to cart but then went out of stock during checkout :(

    • Sorry you missed out. We did sell out when the website finally came back online.

      • Jay

      😂

  • -7

Description was a lie. It said you couldn't purchase if they run out of stock. I just got the below email.

Out of stock: Amino Z Hand Sanitiser 1L (We have 0 of 4 available. Unfortunately our supplier has advised us that they are out of stock and cannot give us an ETA on if and when more goods will arrive. Please let me know if you would like me to recommend an alternative, very sorry about this!)

    • +1

Pretty sure everyone got that email. I think it just means that they won't receive the materials needed until Friday the 17th and then it will take 1-2 weeks to formulate and dispatch. So you're probably looking at 2-3 weeks from this Friday until you receive it aka I'd expect it early April.

      • -3

I can't see any other comments citing the same email though.

        • +1

Someone posted it somewhere, I also got the same email and I purchased early on..

edit - halfway down page 5 someone posted the email 10 hours ago.

    • +1

Yep just an FYI on this, you would have received this email since it's on backorder. I set the system to not allow a purchase if the pre-order stock was exhausted. You're all good with this. Thanks for the order!

      • Jay
  • If anyone is interested I found some nice glass spray bottles in stock here https://aromabottles.com.au/

  • +1

Hate to be the only cynic, what happened to buying limits, does not apply? Or choose not to enforce limits since you wanna make heaps of money?

    • Eh, don't think 4L is that much for a family, certainly not "hoarder status". I go through 1L a month just myself.

    • I did take a look last night and most people have ordered between 1-4 units. There were only a couple of exceptions but no one ordered ridiculous quantities. Certainly a valid point though and thanks for the feedback here. Realistically it would not have made much of a difference looking at the sales data.

If anyone bought too many I’m looking to buy one. Located in Melbourne. Thanks
