Don’t think they got enough antennas on the unit.

Pretty much wasting money on a 4 year old router, this one has been released for ages and they even had handsome cashback promo a few years ago bringing it down to around $200 mark

    • +1

That's probably because of firmware. AFAIK D-Link firmware isn't very good, meanwhile comparable ASUS router still selling for lots more.

"Was doing the research to move to gigabit nbn, realized it needs atleast this."

Sorry, but it looks like you're not necessarily that great at researching then…

Have a look on Whirlpool, lots of cheaper routers can handle gigabit fine. AC5300 literally means that the total throughput of this router is 5,300Mbps.

Not sure why you were negged TBH - there's a 20+ page discussion on WP about gigabit NBN capable routers. A pretty basic router like the USG (with IPS turned off) can do it…

And for the antenna lovers - none!

Do you have any wifi 6 devices? Might be better off with something like the Asus AX3000 to future proof anyway.

  • +1

It does not matter how strong Wi-Fi in this device is. The real speed will depend on the client devices.

Do I need to buy a separate remote or does it fly on its own?
is it homing? will it just follow me once i set myself as the space-ship owner?

  • +1

i'm using the cobra version of the same model. while its good and maintains a very stable connection to nbn and is able to handle heavy streaming from multiple devices and web browsing without any noticable lag, it does "hang" every once a month which requires a hard reboot via the trusty switch. other than that, old firmware with no updates but very very stable modem in handling speeds.

Would it be better to set 2 of AC1900 router as bridge mode to cover a larger area?

yes but why spend that much?
Get 2 x Xiaomi Redmi AC2100 for about $55 each on Aliexpress or Banggood.
Very strong Wifi and you can install OpenWRT.

      • Would this work if I were to get a new FTTN connection of 100/25?

      • I like Chinese stuffs as they are so cheap but it's from overseas and I don't know when will it arrive here in Australia.

Also, the bought a couple of camera from them before and they didn't work in Australia.

  • I picked one of these up second hand for around $110. Unfortunatley it does not fly.

    • Did you mean the Asus AX3000 Dual Band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) Router or D-Link DIR-895L AC5300? Thanks

      • D-Link DIR-895L

        • Thanks - I have a DLink DIR 878. I am happy with it and they are only $115 each.

  • I’ve waited for nbn for quite a while and will need few more years for me to get gigabyte..

  • Can someone recommend a modem, I'm currently using a technicolor tg799vac given by Telstra but the NBN guy installed the box right at the front of the house in the master bedroom and at the back of the house, it's slow and disconnects often. I've tried using a WiFi extender but it just increases the speed a little bit.

    • My friend has similar situation and we are trying to setup 2 x AC1900 WIFI router https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274060035863 as bridge mode to resolve the issue.

      • Thanks!

I upgraded off my 8year old ASUS RT-AC66U few days ago to the Google Nest Wifi with an extra point and the internet flies now. The mesh gives good signal throughout the house and the installation was painless. It's probs on the pricey side $400 but if you want something simple and just works I would reccommend it. However it doesn't have extra WAN ethernet ports so you'll have to go full wireless on all your devices.

      • Pickup Nest wifi routers @ $269 each to get a wired connection.

      • Thanks but my home phone is connected to my modem.

    • What type of NBN? FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

      • I am planning to get FTTN on Aussie Broadband. What would be the best setup to get connectivty throughout the house? Do I need to get a router and a mesh system?

        • FTTN - a modem and mesh system is a good way to go about it. Mesh system comes with a router.

          • @Twix: Thanks. Any modem and mesh system that you would reccommend which would work well for a 4 bedroom 350sqm house?

            • +1

@podada: Any recent ISP provided modem. It doesn't have to be the AussieBB provided modem. For the mesh system Nest wifi, TP-Link Deco M5 or AmpliFi HD by Ubiquiti Labs.

              • +1

@Twix: Thanks Twix, you've been very helpful!

      • NBN

        • If your unsure what type of NBN check here

          • @Twix: oh sorry, I meant FTTP

            • @[Deactivated]: Okay. Do you actually use the Telstra home phone?

              • @Twix: Yes, we do

                • @[Deactivated]: TP-Link Deco M5 or AmpliFi HD by Ubiquiti Labs setup as an access point to the Technicolor.

                  • @Twix: Cheers, at this price point is it not worth getting a better router or will it be the same?

                    • @[Deactivated]: They are routers. You need to have the Technicolor in your setup for the Telstra home phone to work.

                      • +1

@Twix: Oh right I see, thanks a lot mate, you're a legend, I was a bit hesitant at $400 but this is fine.

Battlebots or Robot wars streams faster via this router than any other, I am told…

  • Don't get these one, lack of functionality. The USB port can only be used for USB storage, it cannot tether an Android phone for 4G backup. Consider ASUS instead.

  • Purchased my Netgear R7000 AC1900 Nighthawk Router in 2014. When the NBN hit town late last year I happily found the R7000 still does a great job for my needs.

  • This is AC where AX92U was $390 after cash back. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/473211

  • If anyone buys the D-Link spider it hits around 900Mbps wired and 600Mbps on wifi. There are better options for Gigabit NBN.

  • If you are willing to spend for gigabit nbn, then you should only consider Asus.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3kkyjz63

As posted above, there are better options out there.

  • Got a similar one ACS3200 and I'm very unhappy with it.
Firmware is very buggy and DLINK doesn't provide many updates.
I have to reboot it almost every 2 weeks to get the wifi working properly.
There are plenty of forum that discuss about all the issues of this modem (e.g. Whirlpool forum…)

Please do yourself a favor and buy another brand or buy mine 2nd hand so I can buy a better one.

  • Does it haz RGB???!?

  • Was doing the research to move to gigabit nbn, realized it needs atleast this

Where did you read that? There are plenty of routers around half the price of this that can handle gigabit fine.
