          • @defecat0r: Agree it is give and take
That's what I said if they don't have something nice to say, just don't say anything

Yes we as we all know, they have concequences as evident by history

    • Why should a deal for a product only attractive to a subset of the population be treated differently?
The only reason Christian deals get all these comments is because people who are not interested in the product want to have a say - that's what the mods should deal with.

  • Do you respect a religion that allows a 60 year old man marrying his 12 year old niece?

Do you respect a religion that allows a woman's genitals to be mutilated so she doesn't have sexual pleasure?

Do you respect a religion that allows children to die as a result of a refusal by the parents to allow a blood transfusion?

    • who is the 60 year old man marrying his 12 year old niece?

      • Where does the bible say pedophilia is wrong ? The bible does not say anywhere there is an age limit.

  • +1

Moderators we need a clean up of ass*oles who can't deal with an opinion different from them and ruining a deal for people who think it is.

So much hateful comments from keyboard warriors

    • Relax only about 8 assholes maybe 10. I'm quite pleased there are many atheist who are actually interested. I've read many comments and I'm quite happy with those people. People who claim all the bad stuff against Christianity are just sad haters that probably had a bad experience. They make stuff up just to bring religion down.

      • +1

Stereotype much? I have had zero bad experiences with Christianity. I simply cannot abide people who present falsehoods as truth. How many demonstrably false things does the Bible have to claim as truth for believers to reject it as mere superstition. Do you apply the same standards of evidence to other religions or other claims? Or does Christianity get a pass simply by virtue of the esteem you hold for it? And I do not hate it - I just think that there is nothing inherently good about it and that the resources it uses would be better spent elsewhere. However, you are free to say what you believe, but thank goodness, in this country at least, you no longer can punish disbelievers.

        • +2

Yes, I agree with you there.

I believe that religions have about to
          1) try to explain the unexplainable (science was very much in its infancy a few thousand years ago)
          2) get a sense of "karma" by believing that people that struggle now will be rewarded later and those that behave poorly will pay for it
          3) the most important reason that I think people choose to believe in religions is the unfathomable fact of death. I struggle with comprehending it too and most people that I've spoken to about it (not many) do too. Religions find a loophole out of death.

I would much rather have a harsh truth than a comforting lie though.

I'm actually not against religions themselves, everyone can believe what they want. What I do have a massive problem with is bad things that are done in the name of religion and religions being pushed onto others.
Unfortunately these two things are happening on a massive scale in christianity (other religions too, but this is the one we're talking about in this thread).

          • @RubenM: People have done bad things in the name of religion. However, you still have bigger problems.

For example one common misconception about religion and wars: https://youtu.be/oHoiJj8iSCE

            1) we are not trying to explain the unexplainable. If Christianity is true, I won't be able to fully comprehend God. I can understand some aspect. I will always be a finite being trying to understand an infinite being. He will always be beyond comprehension. Trying to explain the unexplainable is not true. Since our worldview, we have a being more complex than anything in creation. And a finite being will forever keep learning to understand/comprehend an infinite being. I have more chance to fully understand science than an infinite being. Interesting fact, close to 50% of scientist are theist. So close to half believe in science and theism.

            2) Suffering now does not necessarily mean a reward later. Behave poorly does not necessarily mean pay later. Christianity believes everyone is a sinner, including Christians. We believe we are saved by grace not by deeds.

            3) I can speak from my own experience. I never met one person convert or stay Christian because they are scared of death. This is not common. I keep hearing people saying stuff like that. From my personal experience, that's one thing the farthest from being true.

          • @RubenM: Here we go the invisible badness the church does.

What are you gonna pull up the pedophile card?

You know religion has many benefits on a natural level such as helping mental health. You don't actually look at the good side.

        • Do you apply the same rule to atheism if you can't stand falsehood presented as truth?

          Kalam Cosmological Argument
          https://youtu.be/6CulBuMCLg0

          Fine turning
          https://youtu.be/UpIiIaC4kRA

          • @gto21: Kalam cosmological argument:
P1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause.
P2. The universe began to exist.
C Therefore, the universe has a cause.

What examples do you have of things that have begun to exist?

            • @defecat0r: I can't believe you just asked me this question. lol

I don't know how to be nice with you and at the same time show you how ridiculous is that question. But it's your lucky day I already run of a patient with you.

Can you move on now? I already said I'm not interested to have a conversation with you. Can you stop begging for attention?

              • @gto21: It's a serious question, I don't think it's a silly one. Maybe I wasn't clear.

What examples can you give of things that "begin to exist" in the same way in which the universe is supposed to have "begun to exist" in the context of this syllogism?
Can you name even one thing?

Please recognize that this is an opportunity to hone your delivery of this particular apologetic against a fairly stupid Atheist. I don't bite, maybe just treat this as a friendly environment to see how strong this particular argument is :)

                • @defecat0r: Really is it a serious question? 😨 oh no how I'm going to sleep at night if I miss this great opportunity. 😢

I don't even know how someone can misunderstand it to the point of asking this type of question.

But in all seriousness. What should I do tonight? Relax and watch tv or reply to a stupid question. It's a very hard decision, especially because it's a great opportunity. 😂

Truly a great opportunity. I'll probably regret it for the rest of my life. Hmmm not! Lol

                  • @gto21: 1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him

Sir, these are matters of eternal consequence, you need to repent of your sin!

This is an apologetic that you brought up, but now have no interest in defending? That's ok, enjoy your night :)

                    • +1

@defecat0r: I'm definitely not defending it against the most stupid question I ever heard. I rather repent to be honest. 😆

        • Non believers were never punished. It's your choice. There is no point forcing you to join a religion cause it's ineffective. You know the church does.do a service to the common good like the poor. Don't know what you been smoking 😂

  • You have to sympathise with the poor trees that ended up being pages in a bible.

Lucky the new generation will more likely use an app on their phone. You can now feel bad for the raw materials used for a phone.

  • It’s very good to hear from many people different views and opinions.
We have all free choice in what to believe.
No matter whether you believe in God or not, it is evident that you can recognize that there is good and evil in this world.

I found an interesting presentation to share.
I hope that it can be a blessing to those who watch it.

    • I'm actually not convinced free will exists, I'm leaning towards it being an illusion.
But that's another can of worms!

      • Some behaviourists (e.g., Skinnerian radical behaviourists) subscribe to a type of determinism vis-a-vis the Law of Effect wherein the consequences to any behaviour (reward or pain), including thought, are inevitable. That is, the physical world always generates some kind of reward or pain out of every behaviour. No behaviour can opt out of this consequence generating state of affairs. All biological creatures pursue rewarding outcomes and avoid aversive outcomes; reward-getting behaviours always become more likely to happen again and aversion-getting behaviours always decrease. It is precisely through this exchange that the physical environment exerts a certain degree of control or determined outcome over all our behaviours. Even though we think we are making a completely free "choice" through our behaviours, more objectively and scientifically, it can never be 100% free because the environmental consequences of our previous or others' behaviours (rewarding or punishing) always has an influence over our next behaviour (increases or decreases).

Some argue that this notion of free will is not the traditional understanding of free will. Even so, they posit that free will or agency can still exist in the abovementioned framework where the context for choice making consists of structural limits (much like how music or a type of beauty can emerge from limited musical structures or consciousness from limited brain structures).

Please, any atheist but Christopher Hitchens (RIP). I found him to be distasteful and nasty; although obviously extremely bright and flamboyant. From a more intellectual and academic point of view, his propositions lacked the required in-depth and consistent analysis. He was an extremely great orator which made debating his forte, and he could blow the opposition away if they weren't prepared, shrewd or skillful enough. I found the debate between him and Dinesh D'souza to be pretty even. The two Hitchens brothers debated also but I forget who performed better.
