unfortunately its still 1080p, i'll wait for another one with 1440p

    • Yeah true but I think it works out for people with a smaller working space or budget GPU or a combination of the both.

      • a 24" 1080p monitor is the same size as a 24" 1440p monitor :)

        • +11

Yeah, you are mathematically correct. I don't think squinting on a 24" @ 1440p would be any fun though. Sure, you could do 150% scaling or whatever but then you just lose virtual real estate.

    • +9

Don’t think we’ll see 144Hz QHD IPS monitors for this price anytime soon.
Also I think FHD is acceptable at 24”, QHD for 27” or larger

    • +5

      Its 24” mate

    • How about this? Similar specs and a bit bigger with 1440p for about $200 more. I just bought one yesterday.
Warning though, i read that it has screen tear issues when pushed to 144hz, although 120hz is completely fine.

      • Well regarded cheap 1440p 144hz 27" monitor, I think it's been a little cheaper in the past.

Edit: Probably tears at 144fps because that isn't how FreeSync works. Ideally you need to keep your framerate 3fps below the refresh rate according to BlurBusters.

  • What's a suitable set of specs for a 27" monitor for productivity (coding, Excel etc)? I currently have 2x24" Dells that I want to upgrade for tax time and most of the readying I've done refers to 27" for gaming. $350 seems to be the budget end of a 1440p 27" monitor if i'm not wrong?

    • If you don't mind the 60 hz then you can check this out - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546127

I personally prefer high refresh rates (120hz and above) even for coding work as my day job (because autocomplete popup animations are smoother hehe) in which case you would probably want to chase something like this - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543877

      • What about this?

        • +3

1080p on 27" is too pixelated for my tastes. 1080p @ 24" and 1440p @ 27" is sweet spot for me.

We use 4k 27" Ultrasharps at work and they are gorgeous (not cheap).

      I'm currently using a 27" 1440p 144hz wfh and it seems fine.

      General recommendations are min 1080p for 24", 1440p for 27", 4k for 30"+

      • Do you use 150% scaling on the Ultrasharps? (which would make them effectively equivalent to your 1440p at home, for productivity purposes)

Otherwise the ppi would be very high, and very different from your home setup!

        • Even with scaling, I've found the text to be way sharper on 4K than 1440p on the same sized display.

        • Don't recall the amount of scaling I use (I don't even think Macs have a 150% setting other than "normal, large, extra large") but yes there is some scaling.

        • I’m using 4K 27” monitors as well, yes scaling at 150% but much much sharper than my home 1440p 27” which is easier on the eyes and almost as good as Apples retina displays

Some minor weird scaling issues with Win10 especially with dialog boxes and had to find the right adapter to support 2x 4k60 over thunderbolt - most dongles will only support 2x 4k30 which is far too blurry for me even at work

    • How about this? Similar specs and a bit bigger with 1440p for about $200 more. I just bought one yesterday.

      • Thanks guys. I'm not sure if I like my work that much for me to spend that much on two monitors! Maybe I'm better off with upgrading to new 1080p 24" instead but 27" is so tempting.

        • Would you consider adding 1 ultrawide to your existing monitors (or replacing one), rather than replacing both with 24"/27"?

I was using 2x 24", and just upgraded one to an ultrawide 34", and I'm loving it! (I got the $639 curved 144hz ultrawide from Kogan, but really I probably would have been fine with the $449 flat 75hz ultrawide - I was mainly after the ultrawide 1440, didn't really need the curved screen or 144hz)

For general productivity, I find the Kogan monitor absolutely fine! But you could spend a bit more and get a higher quality gaming focused one - still cheaper than 2x27" options above.

That's what I would do! (Well, did!)

          • @caprimulgus: That's a good suggestion. I did think about it but wasn't sure if there difference in image quality between the two would bother me or not. 34" seems massive and I read it's still easy to have windows in two separate screens rather than trying to postion multiple windows on the one monitor. I know there's software that makes this task easier but the general consensus seems to be 2 monitors are easier than one.

Space is also an issue for my desk. It's big enough for 2 x 24" but i reckon I'll max out the space with 2x27".

            • @pooran:

easy to have windows in two separate screens rather than trying to postion multiple windows on the one monitor.

Well, if you keep one of your old 24" next to the 34" UW, you would still have two monitors! :)

Effectively, instead of enlarging both 24" into 27", you would be stretching one 24" even further into 34" UW, and keeping one 24" the same - putting all the upgrade into one monitor, rather than splitting it over both. For me, this makes sense, because even when I am using 2x24", I use it asymmetrically, with one monitor as my main monitor, and the other as secondary - so I prefer an asymmetric setup, with a bigger and better main monitor.

I still have two monitors that I can view things separately - it's just that I have one is extra long, rather than two that are a little bit bigger! :)

I know there's software that makes this task easier but the general consensus seems to be 2 monitors are easier than one.

Yeah, monitor management software is definitely helpful in managing a monitor of this size - but my work IT security is tight, and I haven't gotten around to asking for permission yet, so I'm just using the built in snap function of Windows.

For splitting the UW into two (whether 50:50, or even 70:30 etc), Windows Snap works well. The main reason I would want windows management software would be to more easily split into 3 panels (which I have to do manually at the moment).

Space is also an issue for my desk. It's big enough for 2 x 24" but i reckon I'll max out the space with 2x27".

Another reason why an asymmetric setup works well, because you can set it up with the main monitor straight on, and the secondary monitor angled to the side - this take up less room than having the two next to each other with a slight angle.

(I actually have my 24" on a mount, and chuck it in portrait mode most of the time anyway - UW34" & portrait 24" actually takes up less desk space than 2x27") :)

              I have never used 2x27" (only 2x24"), so I can't really compare - but I'm definitely very happy with the asymmetric UW34" & 24" combo! :)

              • @caprimulgus: That's an interesting setup. There wouldn't be much room left on my desk with that setup. I tried to visualise how it would look but I'm not sure if if I would make the most of having the smaller monitor in portrait mode but def understand your point re the space it takes up. I am currently using my work laptop and connected my personal monitors through the docking station. My personal PC is an old optiplex which I'm not even sure can do 4k resolution or not so that might rule out the ultrawide option.

    • I was doing a bit of research for my friend who wanted a dual screen 27” setup and recommended these based on specs for $ value.
      https://www.mwave.com.au/product/philips-272v8a-lcd-27-75hz-…
They are 1080p monitors but decent for the resolution.

Don't forget the $40 steam voucher promotion from AoC. Sad I paid the full price at centrcom 27 inch $400.

      Added to post. Thanks

Good find! The go-to monitor for 1080p gaming. 144hz, IPS, 24" and G-Sync Compatible. However I've heard NVIDIA Control Panel still lets you enable it on any FreeSync monitor.

    • Is it G-sync compatible? I couldn't see it in the tables on the Nvidia website here

      • There's an unofficial list that states that it works, much bigger than NVIDIA's.

        • Yeah it's not officially recognised as supported but it works.

      • +6

Yes it is. I've got one and it works just fine. You just need to make sure to enable v-sync in any games you play after enabling the G-sync compatibility.

        • +1

          Oooo personal experience, goodie!

        • What's the benefit of enabling v-sync when gsync/freesync is already enabled?

        • I'm just asking as I don't really understand how it works but I thought the idea of g-sync was so that you don't get tearing with v-sync disabled. Wouldn't enabling v-sync give you input lag even with g-sync enabled?

          • +1

@Leggy: https://blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync101-input-lag-tests-and-s… this explains in great details. I don't quite understand though lol. It seems it's best to enable both gsync and vsync then frame cap to 3fps below monitor max refresh rate. The added input lag at high frame rate and with gsync enabled is minimal.

          • +1

@Leggy: They actually work with each other with Nvidia's implementation according to what I've read. I won't pretend to know all of the technical details but it seems to be the general consensus to get the least input lag with no screen tear at all.

  • Is it VESA compatible? Back panel looks like it but the listing doesn't say anything about it

    • +1

      AOC website states its 100x100

    • +1

Looking at this post right now with a 24G2 on a VESA mount. 100 x 100. monitor comes with screws.

  • What would this be like for casual photo editing? The RGB %'s look promising to the untrained eye…

    • +2
      • Thanks! This made my mind up to get but already sold out!

        • Gah! OzBargained!

    • +2

Not sure why you'd get a 144hz screen for photo editing - swap the 144hz for 60/75hz and grab a 1440p.

      • Fair call- I am after an all-rounder though. Gaming, work + casual photo editing is a third.

  • Any recommendatipons for a good and cheap monitor for occasional home use? Preferably less than $200

    • I have the LG 24MK430H-B which I got for $149 pre-COVID from Centrecom. The stand is a bit wobbly if you have a weak desk and it's a bit creaky to the touch but is never heard unless it's wobbling hard. The panel is great, 1080p, IPS, 75hz and covers 99% of the sRGB colour space. I'd recommend it to anyone in the market for a monitor at it's price.

      • +1

it was also $149 last week from Amazon

    • I just bought the ASUS VL249HE. A little bit over $200.00

I think it is a good monitor for home/office use.

  • according to specs it's about as bright as an average laptop screen.

    • Isn't that pretty bright?

    • How did it meet HDR standards then? Also my MacBook screens get really bright, the IPS ones do anyway.

      • +1

It doesn't, it simply accepts HDR input. The only other HDR-like feature it has is an extended colour gamut (WCG). If it went to 600 nit peak brightness, it would technically qualify for HDR600, but that's nothing to write home about.

HDR input and WCG is great at this price though, and gives a pleasant experience for when WCG becomes more widely adopted.

It's not worth chasing HDR experiences on PC unless you're prepared to buy an OLED laptop/tablet, or get an OLED TV to use for those experiences. Everything else is either awful, or still has too much haloing (FALD counts lower than 10,000 backlights).

    • How bright do you need it to go? I have this exact monitor and run it at 35% brightness and 35% contrast and sometimes that feels too bright for me.

  • good and gone…

  • Is that a fixed stand? It's way too high.

    • I have the previous version, it's not it slides up and down. The stand is surprisingly decent on it.

      • ok ty

    • I have this monitor and yes it goes up and down as well as left and right
