waiting for the all in one to reach $70.42 before buying

UDM PRO is supposedly still super buggy.

      Welcome to Ubiquiti.

      • Ubiquiti do make some wicked cool stuff thought at great prices.

      • I love Ubiquiti, but… yeah. Their QA has always been pretty hit or miss.

The frustrating part is some of their products are rock-solid - I have no qualms recommending the UAP-AC-PRO (although it's being replaced with v2 and I don't know much about that).

        • Oh for sure they make an awesome product and pricing is good but they need to sort out their product direction and software testing.

          • @Roger Ramjet: Unfortunately I'll never be able to forgive them for the original UAP-AC line (the square units). Those were awful.

    • No. I am running one. It has been fine for a couple of months now.

    UDM PRO BUGGY

  • +4

A single drive bay for Protect limits the recording and redundancy. The second WAN is a SFP+ port, that limits the redundancy possibilities. Ubiquiti announce EoL of hardware/software at a drop of a hat. But I guess is a Cloud Key, NVR switch (no PoE so will need an additional switch to run cameras) and router.

    • For redundancy wait for the UNVR-4.

The UDM Pro is fairly new & won't be EoL anytime soon.

  • The price for the UDM PRO is great

    "Gaming Router" πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚

Does each packet with LED glow effects?

    • The router should have rgb lighting to be called gaming router.

Is the UDM honestly worth the extra $300 over just buying a USG and 8-port switch?

    • +3

If you need 80mbps+ with IDS/IPS enabled, yes. Otherwise no (until it's EOL)

    • +1

      How fast is your internet?

The UDM outperforms the USG any day of the week especially with IDS/IPS enabled. Approx IDS/IPS enabled on the USG 85Mbps and UDM 850Mbps and turning it off the UDM 940Mbps.

      • +1

So I'll take that as a yes if you're doing lots of data transfer. ;) Not exactly necessary for most home use though? I guess office would make use of it.

        • +3

Not necessary for the gimped NBN most have. The UDM is worth it if your lucky enough to be on 250-1000 Mbps HFC & FTTP.

    • +2

We're currently using the USG pro due to the speed limit on the base USG, and it's a great device. We have our NVR separate, and we're running the controller on a vm. Works great!

    • +4

If you’re getting anything over 100Mb on the NBN get a UDM. Someone just released some hacks to install docker and pihole on it as well which is cool https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/gxkbmr/udmudmp_ho…

However USG is painfully underpowered and hardly gets updates anymore. Cant have IPS and geoblocking on at the same time as hardware offload is disabled with IPS and limits speeds over 85Mbps. If I were to get something else I would probably buy a pfsense box. New USG line announced but who knows when it’s coming out.

They make a decent product for a good price but their market and product strategy leaves a lot of room for improvement.

    • UDM appears to have 2x 10Gbps ports (1 LAN, 1 WAN), if you have gear that can use them.

I think for the UDM Pro, you still have to connect through the cloud (ie. a smartphone app) to configure it.

I don't feel comfortable letting a company have access to internal home network.
( I mean, I don't know if other manufacturers admit they do that now anyway! )

But still,…configuring home networks through smartphone apps or accessing via a cloud account, is not a big plus for me.

    PS:
I have had the ASUS GT-AX11000 router/access-point for about a year now.
    It's awesome.

    • I think for the UDM Pro, you still have to connect through the cloud (ie. a smartphone app) to configure it.

Maybe it's different with the UDM, but I was able to skip setting up a Ubiquiti account during setup (ie. no cloud integration). Setup was local with the app.

The URL the quick start guide directs you to (setup.ui.com) doesn't go to the cloud, the UDM's DNS maps that to itself.

      • if you're using the smartphone app to configure your UDM,
you're already telling Ubiquiti "who" you are, i.e. your smartphone App has an identifier tied to you, etc.

        • +1

Ah, so you're referring to analytics. I'd argue that's different to:

you still have to connect through the cloud (ie. a smartphone app) to configure it.

Though I agree it's a valid criticism. You don't have to use the app though, you can setup from the browser like a regular router.

          • @evanjd: The thing is, whenever you use a smartphone app,
you're using a program that they made and whether it "calls home" or not,
is difficult to say unless you're using Adguard / NetGuard (presuming Android) on your phone.

I don't like to configure a gateway device, through the cloud nor through an App, but that's just me !

Ultimately, unless we can verify any source code, we still never be certain about maintaining privacy or security.

            • +1

@whyisave: I think we agree but are just debating semantics.

"Configure a gateway device via the cloud" IMO implies that configuration flows through the cloud to the router, which isn't the case here (unless you opt-in to cloud control + login via their cloud UI). Configuration is applied locally to the router via bluetooth on the app or over HTTP on the browser (on a LAN).

I'm not disputing that the app sends analytics/telemetry back to base. In fact, the controller itself sends analytics unless you explicitly opt-out of it. The only point I was making was about the primary flow of configuration data from the device you're using to configure the router to the router itself.

    Wow that router looks sick!

Have been looking for a reason to do my house networking for a while, ordered the UDM Pro and 2x of the nanohd WAPs from the same seller. Thanks op!

  • Great price on the UDM Pro. I paid $790 a couple of months ago.

  • Does the UDM Pro have PoE+ ports to power an Unifi AC Pro?

    • +1

no.. if you need POE you'll have to get a POE Switch.

    • +3

Doesn't look like it. I can't see why anyone would pay so much for the UDM Pro. It doesn't make sense to me. On top of that, the US website has it for literally half price so wouldn't it work out a lot cheaper to freight forward? And then it only has a 1 year warranty… Too many negatives to make this price product good in my opinion. The LEAST they could have done was add in PoE. 'Enterprise' device with one power supply, and another redundant DC supply you have to fork out $400+ more to purchase.. Not liking it too much to be honest.

      • Those on 250-1000 Mbps HFC & FTTP that want fast IDS/IPS performance in a rackmount form factor.

PoE would have been nice but adds to the cost. Most customers using the UDM Pro would purchase a PoE switch anyway.

        • Lack of PoE is what's stopping me to get UDM Pro, as I don't want to have a bunch of PoE injectors around, or have another switch.

UDM Pro has 8 ports, if they're PoE that would be quite enough for most home and small office setups - e.g. 2-3 APs and 3-4 cameras.

          • +1

@Jef Tino: Maybe the unannounced black UniFi Dream Machine SE is what your after. It comes in the same form factor as the UDM, 1 WAN, 1 SFP+ 10G, 6 LAN, 4 out of 6 LAN have 802.3af PoE and a 1TB hard drive for UniFi Protect.

  • Any feedback on the seller here?

    All aussie stock i assume?

    • My experience with them was fine, local stock and quick shipping.

  • Wow 'gaming' WiFi access points are going for that "as insane as we can" visual styling hey….

  • Got the dream pro. Being thinking about that for a while

    • Are these guys usually slow to ship ?
