Wow, I bought one of these for $1899 in Nov/Dec. What's happened?

    • +16

Some little virus started popping up, you may have heard about it

      • Why haven't Fuji increased in price? Should I worry that they might and rush out and get my X100V and X-T4?

  • +1

This has been under 2K many times in past. Dont understand why it is a good deal at $2253 and few people already upvoted?

    • +6

Because unless you found a deal on a time machine to go to a world pre-COVID it's going to be tough to get something at that kind of price.

      • +2

Good thing I installed Norton Antivirus 4.0

        • I went with McAfee :(

I mean, it's fine, I haven't got sick, but geez it takes me a long time to get anything done these days :(

      • Yep these guys are paying more for their product at the moment

    • +1

sony put their price up to retailers by at 10%

I am sad I didnt buy it last year.

    • +5

You speak of it like it was a regular occurrence but It actually only went under $2k 3 times in a very specific time period (early Nov/mid Dec).

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/500574 $1899 Sold out within half hour
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/504933 $1999
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/505532 $1988

Hardly regular pricing and useless unless you have a time machine. It never went back to that level again, I was monitoring prices hoping to claim price protection with my 28 degrees card.

I just sold a Sony A7 III I bought in late Dec 2019 (no need for it during lockdown) and I had at least 5 actual people offer me 2k+ on Gumtree in a few days of listing.

      • not for long son when A7S III or IV is due to come out soon

        • +3

A7S III is not direct competition to the A7 III, at 12 megapixels it isn't going to be poaching any stills shooters. Also, looking at Sony's RRPs lately it will probably be hilariously expensive.

I'm waiting for the A7 IV to replace the A7 III I sold but I doubt it is coming in the near future, maybe end of year more likely. It has completely disappeared from the rumour mill after the COVID delays. Wouldn't be surprised either if it was a price bracket above like they do with the RX100s. Increase price of new model and keep the existing model as the 'cheap' option.

          • +1

@eecan: Not sure why you got negged. What you said is all pretty accurate. I’m holding out hope the A7s3 will have a quad-bayer 12/48mpix sensor so i can ditch my a73 and use it for vid + stills. Will be much more flexible. Doubt it though. Can’t wait for 4k120p either way.

            • @eggboi: @bohdud The a7S III has been the Half-Life 3 of cameras, they've really positioned themselves to live up to a lot of expectations with this one, lol. A completely new alien tech sensor type would be very interesting. 24MP stills with no discernible noise up to 51200, and some kind of nanosecond pixel shift that works on top of IBIS, oh and no rolling shutter, haha. Regardless, they'll probably charge an extra $500 for every single year it's been anticipated.

          • @eecan: RRP no worse than canons r5 that overheats lol

        • Can wait for a7s3, been waiting for ages. Caved in with a7iii when Qantas deal was around (refunded though). Looking forward to whats in store for low light video camera :D

      • The camera was on sale at around $2000 for several months in early 2019 at CameraPro. Seems silly to buy this aging camera now for much more than that.

  • IIRC i picked mine up sub $1800 with some creative amex stacking and cashbacks week of release…
Maybe I should sell it off now and rebuy when the supply stabilizes..

    • Got mine for $1,899 and got a further $200 off from ebay vouchers :D

    • sell now and get mark iv when prices come to their senses

      • +1

I’ve actually been enjoying going back to my old d600 and using the crappy 50 1.8D

        • +1

I actually sold everything full frame, and half a ton of glass, and got a Canon M5 with 18-150 lens for a change (plus 22/2 prime for low light)

at times I wish I had my 300/4L but it's covid out there. if I make it to stable economy with my limbs attached, I will buy another L level prime again, and for now a mirrorless aps-c will do.

          • -1

@shabaka: I had reallllyyy bad camera GAS back in the day. I spent a lot of my younger years in electronics retail so was always playing with the newest cameras and lenses when it wasn’t busy.

These days my go to is actually my mobile lmao

  • +6

Don't buy from Digidirect idirect, they are deceitful with their in stock description. I posted the Tamron 70-180mm from Digidirect, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/545943 the item was in stock and went out of stock after a few days.
I received an email after a few days advising of a delay of 7-14 days, since there has been no comms or the delivery.
I rang them and was told I need to wait until the end of July. Two months of holding onto my money and no updates for an item that was in stock.

    • +5

I agree lol DigiDirect online doesn't reflect what stock they have. It could take weeks or months to arrive

      • +3

I agree. I've had microphones on order for weeks. There's no indication on their site when you buy an item that there is actually any stock on hand, or even if the distributor has any stock.

    • +2

Can confirm this my sister ordered a lens over a month ago and still has not been sent and they ignored emails asking when they would send it.

    • +3

Same deal for me in the past when I bought a camera off then the dates kept slipping and one day I called and a guy gave me the run around and said he’s too busy to call me back and said he’s even too busy to scratch his own balls…

      • +2

No jokes, the person I spoke to made a similar excuse today, that we are very busy with thousands of orders.

Absolutely terrible attitude, specially the guy I spoke to on Friday. He asked me to ring on Monday so he can chase up the supplier, I'm sure any decent business would have the decency to say that they'll follow up the supplier on Monday and get back to you. Rather asking me to ring him on Monday to remind him lol

        Bunch of clowns.

    • This isnt a review based from this supplier but something to consider. Also not that it matters to all people but I bought an expensive $2k camera from a popular ebay seller with ebay plus branded as brand new. When it arrived I opened it up and realised it had been used - could see the fluff and dirt marks on the camera, ect… Just a suggestion on caution. Couldnt help to think if something would go wrong in the near future so I returned it for a full refund. Only will buy from a physical store or ebay click and collect physical store from now on. It makes me wonder about other retailers and what they do.

      • Just curious how did you prove to them that it was used on arrival and not because you’ve used it?

        • +1

said change of mind, didnt open it. I was very careful. There was only a seal on the top of the box. so Opened it from the bottom. If I said it was used it woulda been harder and more complicated to exchange. I get the feeling though people could purchase something, use it for the weekend and then return it. I have read stories before of people doing this.

    • Yes this happen to me also however I also got a ripper price of 2.7k for the 70-200 f2.8gm so was happy to wait lol

  • +1

    This is a deal??

  • -7

Not a bargain. Has been way cheaper in the past.

    • +2

Last time I checked we live in the now.

      • It's a depreciating asset. It was cheaper in the past, and it'll be cheaper in the future. Unless you're desperate for this camera, this is not a bargain.

        • -2

If you wait 20 year then maybe $200

          • +1

@snvl: One only had to wait 15 years for the Canon 5D to get to around $200. Cost circa $4500 back in the day :D

  • Camera review: good camera.

  • -1

New models are about to roll out on 28th of July , https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.digitalcameraworld.com/au/a…

    • +5

The A7S III is a successor to the A7S II not the A7 III.

You are thinking of the A7 IV but there is no date for that yet.

  • +1

    Price is appalling.

  • I know there's cheaper before. But the offer is for those who can't wait to buy, if you can wait to buy, then so be it. Boxing day sale or black friday is always a good time to buy. But if you can't wait till then this is the best price you can get now.

  • I wanted to get a 4K camera to start some youtube stuff. This is an overkill for it I guess. But, reviews are tempting. However, based on where the country is now going, I might need that $2k for something more essential soon.

    • Combine this with a $20 CCTV lens from Amazon, and you're in business.

      • ok ok. You had your fun. $4k it is.
        Bloody hell, thats a lot.

    Seller digiDirect review:
Brough a camera and few Lenses from them across the last five years. The latest was last Christmas.
Customer service is generally good. Staff gave helpful advice on the days where I was just browsing and trying lenses.

Price is great on sale seasons, especially combined with the Sony cashback promotion at the end of the year.
Considering I value my warranties and services from a brick and mortar store, I generally buy the big ticket items from them, as they are generally the cheapest amongst the competition.

    Sony A7 Mark III thoughts:
Been eyeing this camera for 2 years since release. Price has fluctuated from being good value to great value back to good value again.
I am very specific with my needs. My current A6500 with a good selection of lenses hasn't showing its age yet. I do not see the need to upgrade to the full frame ecosystem anytime soon.
Waiting to see if the next A7 Mark IV will have the following: flip screens, higher frame rate 4K, better image processing and/or sensor.
Bottom line: wont be buying the current A7 Mark III at this price.

Seems to now be available via their direct store for $2505.80.

A price beat can be had via Sony Australia through the "Request a Price Match" option on the page. They'll then add the camera to your cart (with a Sony account), from here you should be able to click through Cashrewards and get a further 7% cashback as pointed out by igoforthebest.

    • On the product picture there's "Bonus $400 Gift Card* terms and conditions apply" which may bring the price to $2105.80 if that's not a mistake.

      • Yep it'd be eligible for the $400 EFTPOS gift card also.

    • And $50 from amex offer

  • +1

Go to DigiDirect website, they have 15% discount until midnight, more than eBay's.
But they might not have stock.
I use the link of the discounted price from Digidirect, go to Sony Australia website and do the pricematch, got the price match in 3 hours and made the purchase.
Digidirect has a poor stock management, sometimes they said in stock but actually they dont have stock.
But Sony Australia online, everything guaranteed, and plus 3points of Qantas FF per $1 spent.
You will get the Gift Card without the need of waiting the camera to come and redeem it later, once your order is confirmed.

2505.80 at digidirect website. Just picked one up at JB hifi after price match

With the 400 gift card the price will come down to 2105.80 :)

    • If you can get 5% off JB gift card, it will be reduced to 1980.8 after sony gift card
