[Pre Order] Toyota GR Yaris $39,950 Drive-Away for The First 1000 Orders (Save ~$9,550 + On-Road Costs)

3730

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris will have a sky-high recommended retail price of $49,500 plus on-road costs, but the first 1000 buyers will be able to secure one from $39,950 drive-away when order books open from midday next Wednesday.

An additional special offer will give the first 50 buyers of the GR Yaris a fuel discount of 20c per litre for the first 12 months, when purchased via the company's myToyota portal.

Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

Power is distributed via a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, and the hatch can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2 seconds.

The 0-100km/h time makes the GR Yaris quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, but nearly half-a-second slower than the outgoing Volkswagen Golf R.

Online and in-dealer pre-sale reservations start on 23 September

TIL a Yaris is worth 50k

    • I learnt something new here today too

    • +17

TIL people can't tell the difference between an entry and performance level trim.

      • Like the people I talk too who say “I can’t understand why the i30N is so expensive, it’s just Hyundai with a body kit…”

      • Well… obviously. I was just legitimately surprised there is a performance level Yaris.

  • when flag ship phone cost more than $1k and now the car…

thanks OP - will be buying 10 for high yield investment purposes

  • -1

    Thanks OP, will buy 5.

As a former RS Clio 182 owner I am not claiming any credibility for car looks but damn that looks to me like a very ugly looking car.

My thoughts as well, the butt just looks…. yech

Just bought a Hyundai Tucson Active base model for $29500 drive away two weeks ago. Then I saw next gen Tucson premiered yesterday. Not sure if I made the right choice.

  • +1

    How much is postage?

  • +2

This car priced at 49500 is a joke. Who would pay for it? At least I won’t. Will rather add extra 6k for a front wheel drive king - type r

    • +4

You'd pay 6k more for a front wheel drive ?

      • +4

        no, a type- R badge

        • +1

Just do what every 90s ricer in a stock Civic did and buy an aftermarket red H.

          • @SydStrand: Can confirm, had an aftermarket red H on my 94 Civic.

      • -1

        I would, only type r!

If u v ever driven that car, u gonna know why.

I am the owner of golf r 7.5 which is 4 wheel drive, but I still can say type r has a better driving experience on conering

By the way, I bought my golf r for only 52.5k. That s only 3k more comparing to this little warm hatch, but it is much more faster.

        • +1

Does the type R badge on your golf r make it the front wheel drive king?

        • Golf r is a luxury Family car though. Entirely different.

          • @onlinepred: https://youtu.be/co-FHdmHEKo

Whose luxury family car after mod can do this ?

            • @pzhon: Yes, it's still a luxury Family car though lol. Still heavy, boring, unappealing. I'd rather buy an actual Sports car or something unique

              • @onlinepred: Ok if that’s your opinion, i ain’t gonna convince.

A golf r at Stage 2 has no fear to any performance car on the road.

Don’t mention on the track, I admit golf r is not a track car. But with the daily commuting, it gives me a lot of fun.

                • @pzhon: I 100% acknowledge it's a beast, but it drives heavy, feels big, is uninspiring, looks boring, electric steering and throttle, only quick in automatic. There are many different types of cars, and worrying only about traffic light drags and driving a family around is very specific. For instance if you swapped the golf r for an actual Sports car that won't be as quick to 100 but offer you far more joy to drive at slower speeds as you can actually feel the speed and the road.

Just not my style of car, I prefer wacky cars rather than generalists. The golf is great because it's good at most things, but great at nothing.

                  • @onlinepred: I know what you saying mate. Before lockdown I went with a group of people on mountains weekly. I tried new mx5, type r and sti… but they aren’t for daily driving.

Anyway, A perfect car is a car that fits perfectly to your needs. to me, golf r is. That is why i didn’t chose type r.

                    • @pzhon: Just buy a tesla, would be far faster.

I would daily pretty much any car as I love cars, the more uncomfortable the better, louder etc.

                      • @onlinepred: I like loud cars as well. But pls consider your neighbours, lol. That’s why I only changed a catback with valves.

I won’t buy Tesla, unless they get cheaper.

For now, I prefer a vroom vroom car.

          • @onlinepred: Golf a luxury car? LOL Now I've heard it all.

        • +2

Golf R with 0-100 is 5.0s with a DSG. A manual golf are would add at least 0.5 sec to that. If you compare manual to manual, Yaris is faster to 100km/h. This will smoke a golf around corners as well.

          • -2

@8azinga: My previous car was MPS 3, official stated 0-100 is 6.1, but i never managed that result.

If you don’t believe, try This Yaris to see if you really can do 0-100 5.2 sec.

Golf R even manual is no doubt faster than this little car.

            • +1

@pzhon: no offense but 3 MPS was a torque steering piece of crap

              • @keejoonc: Yes. Torque steering anytime anywhere. Quite dangerous when it is rainy.

However, once it is on the drive, it is fast.

                • @pzhon: I remember test driving it a long time ago and it was shockingly bad.

            • @pzhon: Mazda was known to over estimate their times back then.
Just because your Mazda couldn't do the claimed 0-100 time doesn't mean the Yaris cant. Guess your golf cant do the claimed 0-100 time either.

              • @8azinga: ha, u know what, my golf r DSG actually did 0-100 4.7 in the winter time. The result couldn’t keep the same, always between 4.7-5. Stock car, no ecu tuned

                • @pzhon: You just proved my point. If you are saying your car can match or beat its claimed time, why can't the Yaris?

                  • @8azinga: If u think shifting gears manually can be as quick as DSG, yeah, you have your point.

                    • @pzhon: LOL where you coming with this crap?

                      • @8azinga: Like it or not, unfortunately that is the truth

                        • @pzhon: The truth that manual is slower than DSG which would make a manual golf R slower than the Yaris GR?

                          • @8azinga: Being a keyboard racing driver makes no sense, let me know once you buy your GR, will pick a chance to see who’s faster if you r in Melbourne

                            • @pzhon: Yep, dont know why you love being a "keyboard racing driver" You dont even drive a manual Golf R so why bother racing?

                            • @pzhon: I wonder if you can drive a real car using keyboard and mouse, actually you probably dont even need the mouse as that's only used to move the camera which you won't get since you'll be at the cockpit(unless you use the mouse buttons for your racing?), (and not just a simulation in some racing game) and have it race against someone using a wheel, stick and pedals and see how that fairs. I would assume with the keyboard you would have a faster response time since it's just mere finger movements, but with a steering wheel, foot pedals and stick, you need to move your whole arms and legs which is much more slower.

  • +3

That is not a bad price at all for what is on offer - all wheel drive, manual and a bonkers 1.6 turbo with 200kw! And will be reliable too.

Poms on the other side of the pond get a launch price of £29,995. Ouch!

    • Exactly. This is almost a 40% discount a compared to the UK launch price.

    • i would pay the full 50k if they plonk that on 86

    • all jap cars are quite expensive over there and not very popular either.

  • +1

very impressive 0 to 100 time for a little pocket rocket, this is the the fastest current production toyota (i dont count the supra a toyota its a bmw)

    • It's the most powerful 3 cylinder engine in the world also. Who would've thought we'd see 3 cylinder engines producing more torque and almost the same power than a 3.6 V6?

      • if you are comparing it to the shitty commodore engine, yeh i mean there is a reason they are no longer produced they never kept up with the times

        • if you are comparing it to the shitty commodore engine

nah mate, that was the 3.0 SIDI turkey, the SV6 used the 3.6, which is the one mentioned above.

Couple years ago I was shopping for a small city car, after comparing the interior on Yaris with Mazda 2, I bought Mazda 2 straight away.

Yaris interior is just looks ugly and cheap.

    • +4

Can you make a 200kw AWD Mazda 2 for me then?

  • +1

Absolute steal of an offer!!! Buy the car now enjoy it, then hang onto it for a bit, then ship to a collector overseas…

  • Does it come with an automatic braking system, cross traffic alert, lane change warning, active cruise control and speed limiter?

      Why? Can't you drive?

    • -1

      Nope can you?

      • +1

        Yeah, I can

  • -8

With 1000 40k cars on the road the severe instant deprecation for anyone silly enough to pay 50k is going to be absolutely soul destroying.

    • +1

severe instant deprecation for anyone silly enough to pay 50k is going to be absolutely soul destroying.

I don't think German car buyers care. Toyota buyers will get use to it.

      • -1

There's the usual depreciation with any car the second you drive the car off the lot. This would be depreciation before you even turn the key. There is absolutely no way this car will ever be sold for 50k. Even if they advertise it at 50k dealers will be discounting them heavily just to get rid of them. This post should be flagged and unpublished. Offering a 20% discount on a brand new model is pure spin, unprecedented and complete garbage.

A member of the CarAdvice team flagged this in their own comments section:

Alex CarAdvice team • 4 hours ago • edited

$39,990 DA is a totally fair price for the performance on offer, but $50k+ drive-away? Heck no.

I would not be surprised if that RRP figure never ends up being paid by a customer… (edit: due to Toyota reducing it, not dealer discounts)

    • +3

      Fair point on pricing there.

Think Toyota saw the comments before launch because it was basically nearing the cost of a STI for what most people see is a souped up Yaris. So had to drop the price, so now as you pointed out how can they put the price back up $10K. Its better for early adopters here, usually they get burned.

Will be a sort after car but I guess people will forget about then price will fall like normal. Just looked at Supra prices, RRP ~99K now selling for $75K. GR Yaris will be an awesome performance bargain used.

      • +5

No offence but it's 'sought' after not sort.

        • +1

          None taken +1

  • 40k is gonna be a tough sell for the Yaris GR let alone the 50k RRP after the 1,000 orders. Imagine the price for the new Corolla GR once it comes out.

  • +3

Its not just a fast Yaris.

"The GR Yaris is built on a special four-wheel-drive version of Toyota’s TNGA architecture, with the front end of the GA-B small car platform – as used on the new Yaris – and the rear from the GA-C of the larger Corolla."

I am actually loving the sound of this. Apparently can be fully rear biased as well! Damn!

"The engine is mated to a six-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (IMT) gearbox, with permanent four-wheel drive delivered by Toyota’s new GR-Four system. This uses a multi-plate clutch and can vary power to all four wheels, with three preset levels of torque distribution, including a wholly rear-biased one. The GR Yaris features 356mm grooved front disc brakes that utilise four-pot calipers."

    Bought 5.
Will keep one and put the remaining on gumtree!

  • +4

honestly for 40k drive away id snab one if i was in the market, perfect price, this is what it should be always. drive away 40k

    • I agree… if I didn’t already have a play car, I would be all over this GR Yaris at this price… but at $50k, no thanks.

  • For some reason, I just don't like cars that have an odd number of cylinders. They lack symmetry.

    • +1

      Oh boy…

I think this redditer explains it nicely: the reason for 5 cylinders is because more power than 4 cylinders but less fuel hungry than a six.

Your engine isn't going to benefit from symmetry. I wouldn't be surprised if the Yaris engine is laid transversely to save room.

      • +4

But we're talking about a car with 3 cylinders. So you can't use that same line "more power than 2 cylinders but less fuel hungry than a 4"…

Anyway, I know my statement doesn't have logic, it's just the OCD in me. I like symmetry.

        • +4

Buy an electric car. Problem solved or you can just obsesses about the symmetry in the coils in the motor. lol

        • you might be on to something. odd cylinder engines have more noise and vibrations but engine counter balances/new technology/designs etc are used to settle the forces. take a look at this or this.

since less cylinders=more efficient, i wouldn't be surprised to see 3 cylinder engines being the new standard in the future. too bad the OCD won't be going anywhere

          • @thevietjesus: Anything under 12 cyl are going to have more vibrations.

            • @onlinepred: odd cylinders have more vibrations when compared to even cylinder engines was my understanding or am I missing something?

              • @thevietjesus: The fewer cylinders, the more vibrations due to gaps in firing. If you want smoothness buy electric or rotary.

    • They are if it's an inline formation as opposed to a V.

    • than you have not met the rs3.. i feel bad for you

      • I hear them farting around the city.

  • +17

Most people here don't seem to understand what a performance car/hot hatch is 🤦‍♂️

    • +11

Yep, and some people are so oblivious that they think their bizzaro comments are cool. It's pretty embarrassing. There's literally so many examples of these cars its kind of amazing. Do these people think Golf R and Golf, Civics and Type R, i30 and i30N cost the same?

    • the problem is they give 86 the rebirth of legendary ae86 , a crappy gutless boxer engine from subaru, and sell it 30k

whilst giving this yaris all the goodies / attention and sell it at 50k

      • Remind us how many WRC victories the original AE86 had? It was a shaky, gutless, unrefined RWD Corolla.

New 86 had zero motorsport cred when they cross-pollinated with Subaru. They did that to save development costs and fill a gap in the poseur market.

    • -2

Not if they look like they're for grannies or girl drivers…

      • Haven't seen one female on the Australian GR Yaris groups on Facebook.

  • Despite the car being awesome, will be a low volume seller. Like my Kia Pro_cee'd GT, its manual performance car coming from a badge that isnt known for that (Yaris), manual hot hatches are niche market here, then there is the issue of price.

I'll be waiting at auctions for one pop up once people forget about it. 200kw awd 3cyl tiny car, sounds like a awesome agile factory sleeper.

  • -6

A Yaris for $40k 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 LMAO biggest rip off ever!

    • +4

What other 200kw AWD small car would you get that's cheaper

      • +4

The level of arrogance based on ignorance in this thread is astounding.

  • +10

For those wondering, a good article here about why the car is here:

Typically with WRC homologation requirements, you have to sell 25,000 examples of a base car, and 2500 of them have to be the model variant being homologated for rally. Wikipedia's helpful example highlights Subaru: to homologate the WRX for rallying, you have to sell 25,000 Imprezas and of those, 2500 have to be WRXes. But, the GR Yaris is so different than the standard Yaris, Toyota will have to sell 25,000 for homologation. That considered, Clark said it'll be priced "competitively," but it's fair to expect it to cost more than, say, a Fiesta ST.

Need to sell 25,000 worldwide (not sure over what time period) to be able to have a similar car in WRC. This harpers back to the reasons for the first Evo, WRX, Galant VR4, etc etc

    • +3

Yep. This probably wasn't the place to post about this car. So many comments comparing it to a Hyundai Tucson or even a Chinese MG. Plus the usual badge snobbery. I will likely buy this as well as the GR86
