[Pre Order] Toyota GR Yaris $39,950 Drive-Away for The First 1000 Orders (Save ~$9,550 + On-Road Costs)

3730

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris will have a sky-high recommended retail price of $49,500 plus on-road costs, but the first 1000 buyers will be able to secure one from $39,950 drive-away when order books open from midday next Wednesday.

An additional special offer will give the first 50 buyers of the GR Yaris a fuel discount of 20c per litre for the first 12 months, when purchased via the company's myToyota portal.

Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

Power is distributed via a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, and the hatch can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2 seconds.

The 0-100km/h time makes the GR Yaris quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, but nearly half-a-second slower than the outgoing Volkswagen Golf R.

Online and in-dealer pre-sale reservations start on 23 September

          But it's an Audi.

        • I've got a Polo, so I've always got an eye out for cars similar to mine. I've seen only one S1 on the road ever. When I saw the price I realised why.

        • Yeah S1s could get up to 300bhp I believe as they had great aftermarket support from revo, apr and the like. Just another car that once it got imported and Oz taxed it didn't fit in the same price bracket as it did overseas so it lost too many potential buyers.

    • -3

Enjoy the head gasket issues with a used Focus RS. This will be a money sink for Toyota, no doubt. So was the Celica GT-4. It's for homologation purposes.

    • +2

Sports cars and performance cars are emotional buys. No one a rural wants a golf sports hatch, they compromise to get one. To get a ballistic Toyota Rally car for the road is a more attractive idea for me as I love cars that aren't made for comfort and luxury.

    • Focus RS, with a blown engine as standard from factory. Hard pass.

      https://www.thedrive.com/article/17246/the-cause-of-the-ford…

    • I have a focus RS - I love it but I wouldn't be raving about the interior quality to anyone. Golf R is (sadly) a whole different ball game in terms of interior quality, the two don't really belong in the same sentence.

    • @nmachine oof tough sell at 40k yet 1000 sold within 6 days.

  • +4

    Go fossil fuels!

    • -7

Yeah, its crazy people still contemplate spending this much on fossil gobblers. You can spend around 20-30k more up front on an EV and have the same 5yr total cost of ownership (your mileage may vary, because it varies by mileage).

      • What ev would you be getting for $60k?

        • Nissan Leafs are around 55k I believe.

          • +9

@Kontiki: Nissan leaf vs 200kw AWD Yaris? I'm not sure they are quite the same market segment.

            • -3

@brendanm: You are right, you'd have more space in the Leaf.

              • +5

@Kontiki: You'd also die of boredom. My diesel SUV is quicker than the leaf, and gets more than 250km range.

High performance hot hatch and boring as bat shit, low range ev are not usually cross shopped.

                • +2

                  @brendanm: Hey the criteria were:
                  - EV for under 60k
                  - Same 5yr of ownership.

Personally if it's a performance car, EV or petrol, I'd go with something more exciting than a Yaris, talk about boredom.

                  • +3

@Kontiki: You are in a thread on an AWD 200kw Yaris. Ecobox Ev is not the same.

Lol, you obviously have no idea about power to weight.

            • -4

@brendanm: You are right, you'd have more space in the Leaf.

      • -3

It's crazy that people are spending nearly $100k on what is essentially a Mazda 3 because they think it will save the whales.

        • +5

Its only helping save the planet you live and depend on, not that big of a deal really

        • Gold!!!

  • +24

To be honest, anyone looking for a brand new hot hatch shouldn't go past one of these (Or an i30n). They look great, drive great from the early impressions videos and they will have the backing of a brand like Toyota.

Subaru will have to come out of the gate strong with the next WRX or STI to compete with all these new "hot hatches".

As a car euthenist who understands that we are now moving away from the "Traditional" sports car and into a new age of performance cars, ones that must comply with how the world is going, these little pocket rockets will be the next thing that people move towards to get their performance kicks. Its great to see more brands getting onboard.

    • +18

I reflect your opinion entirely. I'm definitely a fan of this and hope that enough people with well-lined pockets buy these to keep up supply into the future and sell some relatively un-molested ones down the line for me to buy. I just hope these stay under the radar a bit, so that they don't become too exclusive and have a JDM tax attached.

Can't wait to test drive one though.

      • +8

Nah i don't think it'll stay under the radar for people like us.
200kw in an small agile light manual awd car, it's going to be loads of fun.
I hope Toyota makes it raw as hell.
In 2001 a 40k 200sx with less power was wheels car of the year.
20 years later people are saying it's 'only' a yaris, buy a golf, go electric… This car isn't for you.

The golf r is a very fast comfortable car…but the second you start talking about interior, then yeah, this car isn't for you

        • +5

          200sx's actually look good.

        • -2

There is no comparing a 200sx with a Yaris no matter how tatted up it is.

If you offer most car enthusiasts a 20 year old nicely maintained Sylvia or a Yaris, most (if not all) will go Sylvia

    • Agreed. We are about to see an Automotive revolution, this car plus the many EVs to come will be beasts.

    • Just needs to be the size of a corolla so my head wouldn't hit the roof.

  • +12

Yaris? $39,950??? Wasn't this a cheap entry model? Must be the crazy 2020 … all different this year!

    • +12

This (GR) is the sports version of the Yaris.

The normal Yaris are indeed horribly overpriced, but imho $40K DA is a great price for the sports version

      • -2

But with that amount of money, wouldn't it be better to spend on a SUV?

        • +1

Depends what you're looking for. If you want to roll over with any side impact, then sure, buy an SUV.

    • +4

This isn't the base model used for shopping trolleys.

    • +1

Even if the base (shopping trolley) model was at a decent price then the GR is still quite reasonable I think.

    • +125

All good, there's plenty of clapped out Commodores with Chevrolet badges around to placate your masculinity.

      • +14
      • +15

Dont get me started on the 50 year olds slapping (profanity) ugly pontiac front ends on their VE's, I'd rather take a yaris over that shite any day.

        • I don't think anyone is doing that conversion, rather the cars had a limited run with Pontiac fronts from factory

          • +2

            @spackbace: You would be amazed.

            • @onlinepred: I would be, considering the front-ends were done from factory

              • +2

@spackbace: Except they weren’t sold in this market with a Pontiac badge. People buy the badge from the states and retrofit

                • @WhatWouldBiggieDo: Badge isn't front-end.

Here's the comment this chain is from:

Dont get me started on the 50 year olds slapping (profanity) ugly pontiac front ends on their VE's

And they're Chevy badges (specifically), not Pontiac…

                  • +1

@spackbace: Sorry misread the original post. I do remember the limited run with Pontiac front ends

              • @spackbace: This wikipedia says nothing about the pontiac version ever being sold in Australia

                • @chepsk8: Really?

Following the cancellation of Pontiac brand, it was reported that Holden planned to sell 1,500 limited edition version of the Commodore SS V fitted with the Pontiac G8 front-end fascia and other trimmings.

                  • -1

                    @spackbace: Planned is not sold.

                    • +1

                      @FrugalDealHunter: https://www.drive.com.au/car-article/pontiac-g8-body-parts-t…

The dealership bulletin also said the total production run for the G8-flavoured Commodores will be limited to 1500 cars - 500 of each bodystyle. Pricing is expected to begin at $47,490 for the manual ute, rising to $55,290 for the manual sedan and $57,290 for the manual wagon.

                      Sigh

Ignore the fact I actually used to work for Holden, it seems you can't research for yourself so here, let me put it in black and white for you.

                      • +1

                        @spackbace: Again. Planned.

I liked that you researched it for me though :D

“ Reports have surfaced this week suggesting that Holden plans to make use of its extensive supplies of surplus G8 body parts in a limited-edition Commodore SS V variant.”

                    • @FrugalDealHunter: My neighbour 3 doors up had a black SS Wagon with the pontiac front. Came straight from the dealership. Even he said it was "butt-ugly but for the price I couldn't pass it up" He paid $45k for it with fleet discount and no trade-in. Yes, the RRP was ~$57k

          • +2

@spackbace: All the VE Commodores here with Pontiac front ends are conversions mate. I doubt very much that there would be any genuine Pontiac G8 cars on the road here considering they were only delivered in LH drive and importation and conversion was blocked as they were too similar to a car available on the local market (the VE Commodore which goes without saying).

In 2010 for some odd reason (probably Holden couldn't shift all the stock to suppliers), there was a limited run of VE Commodores with Pontiac G8 fronts which didn't sell very well.

Holden sold off Pontiac front ends cheap to a number of surplus suppliers who then sold the Pontiac front ends off for not much at all to the public. Holmart were one of the suppliers that had stock back in the day https://www.holmart.com.au/

    • +2

      resale value

      • -3

the resale value of this kinda type cars most of the time is smashed
go carsales to check if you don't agree

    • +1

      I'm also not sure.

$40k is about 1000 average-expensive cab/uber rides for me. And I can't go anywhere because of covid.

      • …and this is why we have cars offered at such large discounts. A great time to get a car on the cheap.

    • +2

faster than a WRX/Golf GTI/megane RS/Focus ST for the same money? Better on fuel too?

      • +1

Better made than all those too, except maybe the subaru.

    • +4

Its got a super interesting 3 cylinder engine under the hood which is one of the fastest money can buy that isnt a 2 million dollar koenigsegg.

    • -1

I would bet that there's not much you could be convinced to spend that type of money on.

    • +2

      It's a driver's car.

    • and yet the neg voters for this question wont put their money down for this Yaris…..

    • +1

      High yield investment.

    • +1

Come back after you've taken one for a spin. I guarantee this will be the most fun you can buy for the money.

    • Check the specs, it’s no normal little Yaris.

  • +16

Due to popular demand we've decided to keep the new low price of $39,950!

    • +1

One could only hope for this. At 40k this would be a steal.

  • +6

I hope the GR86 will be similarly priced if/when it is released next year.

    • +2

and have this3 cylinder turbo engine

  • +1

I'd rather wait for the Rallye variant.

    • That's going to cost heaps.

  • +3

Wouldnt put a deposit down without test driving one…

    • +5

Fair enough, but at the same time Toyota have been making great cars for decades, and have some very solid sports car pedigree from the 80s/90s (Celica GT4, Supra, AE86, JZX….MR2). This is a really exciting return to peformance cars from Toyota I reckon

      • Don’t forget the Toyota T18, the mighty macho machine…

    • Get your deposit back after the test drive!
Be the first 1000 drive the new hot hatch for FREE!

    • +1

I have previously preordered toyota cars with the condition of pending test drive after which you can keep your order or get your full deposit back. Not sure if it's the case here.

  • is there going to be a sportivo or trd version like the new camry?
