[Pre Order] Toyota GR Yaris $39,950 Drive-Away for The First 1000 Orders (Save ~$9,550 + On-Road Costs)

3730

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris will have a sky-high recommended retail price of $49,500 plus on-road costs, but the first 1000 buyers will be able to secure one from $39,950 drive-away when order books open from midday next Wednesday.

An additional special offer will give the first 50 buyers of the GR Yaris a fuel discount of 20c per litre for the first 12 months, when purchased via the company's myToyota portal.

Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

Power is distributed via a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, and the hatch can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2 seconds.

The 0-100km/h time makes the GR Yaris quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, but nearly half-a-second slower than the outgoing Volkswagen Golf R.

Online and in-dealer pre-sale reservations start on 23 September

      • Was watching preorders refreshing the page every few hours trying to make up my mind on whether to commit or not. The preorder page now says orders are closed.

        • The dealer told me he had to put it in the system by 5pm.

  • Didn't some online car magazine say it would take 12 to 18 months to reach that number? He was wrong, big time!

    • +1

Toyota said that themselves in their pre-release article

      • I reckon they said that just so they could act suprised at how popular it would be. Lets see what they say tomorrow.

They might say hey due to popular demand we are keeping this 'promo' price for a bit longer ;)

      • It must of been a surprise for them then.

        • They really misread the market then if they thought a 40k driveaway hot hatch awd yaris wouldn't sell.

Especially when they are trying to flog the top spec hybrid yaris for 37k drive away…

          • @Circly: I dont think any manufacturer would have thought it would sell like this.
Manual & 3 door Golf GTI & R didnt sell so VW stopped bringing it in.
They probably underestimated the number of people who would have it as a second car or are willing to sacrifice practicality for the performance. For someone with a single car, it's ot really practical. Small, tiny boot, back seats might be unusable, interior isnt that nice.

            • @8azinga: VW have an image problem with reliability issues though.

  • +4

    First 1000 all sold out!

Now to scroll back to the first few pages and read the comments such as "who is going to pay $40k on this??" or "this is only worth 30-35k like the Fiesta ST or Polo GTI".

  • I don't know if I would buy this for over $50K, when I've seen it for $40K. Maybe some people will after a test drive, especially the Ralley model.

  • +1

I was one of the number in here who put a deposit down but remain very non committal. Toyota have told me I can eyeball and drive the demo (assuming Dan Andrews will let me) and cancel with deposit refunded anytime prior to taking delivery (I.e. disregard the 3 day cooling off). Given I could live without the $1k for a few months I figured why not whilst I decide.

There is a long list of items which could cause me to cancel though which remain tbc. Likely quite a number of others did the same.

    • If I had been aware that was an option, would have definitely put down a deposit. That's a pretty good deal when you get to test drive and view a demo before locking in and paying the balance!

      • +1

Yeah I thought so. I mean they could be lying to me but tbh they'd sell it to the next person on the list anyway so it's more a good faith arrangement.

        • +1

I've done the same - asked the dealer for a refundable deposit and they didn't have a problem. I also asked for an amendment note in the contract which they did.

        • Didn't you get it written into the contract that you could cancel with full refund?

          • @8azinga: Yes, I've got in written into the contract that it's a subject to test drive and full deposit refund.

            • @wallaby12: Sorry, question was meant for drprox.

              • @8azinga: No I just ordered through the website and got an email saying congrats.
I spoke with them after and they told me there won't be any issue and am happy to back them that far.
If I pushed them or told them I had no finance they'd give it back anyway but I have no reason to doubt them.
                She'll be right!

Dealers wanted as many preorders as they could get, even if someone would cancel because without preorders, they dont get any cars that they can easily sell and make them money. Just had to speak to them and they would have been happy for the contract to be subject to test drive, seeing the final specifications or something else.

Go talk to a dealer if you want one. Pre-orders are still available according to Toyota Australia facebook post but i dont know if they have actually raised the price.

        • Not sure if this will help anyone else, called a dealer today to see what the deal was with the preorder and commitment to buy. The salesman I spoke to led me to believe a buyer would have to sign a contract on the day to lock in a pre-order, which is a commitment to buy. I mentioned that personally, I was hesitant to order if no clause was written in allowing cancellation after a test drive and viewing of the demo but he said the dealer principal wouldn't come to the party.
Something was mentioned about the possibility of the dealership getting stuck with a car on the lot when the price increases.

Curious if anyone had any luck getting any additional conditions being written into the contract in SE Qld and what dealers they dealt with?

          • @JF: From what I've heard PLENTY of people did. Personally I just banged in the online order and when I spoke with Toyota they told me there wouldn't be any issue getting the deposit back pre taking delivery.

I know it requires some trust but I believe a thinly veiled threat would get it done in any event :)

There is simply no way they couldn't sell one of the first delivered to another buyer once they're in the yard (barring the press finding some catastrophic shortcomings!)

            • +1

@drprox: Yes, the sales rep at my dealership said that too. I mentioned about the 3 day leeway on the deposit and he didn't seem to know anything about that and said there shouldn't be any problem getting the deposit back if not happy with the deal.

              • @telby: Mine said that too but 'talk' doesnt mean too much unless its written down. In hindsight i should have written a refund clause in my contract. I highly doubt i'd need it but its always smart to put it in just in case.

                • @Circly: It does and doesn't. I recall the discussion and time and who it was with.
I'd be happy to ram so much ACCC rhetoric down their throats they'll choke on it if they change their minds :)

  • +1

Yeah true, words are cheap sometimes. I have bought all my Toyota's from this dealership, so if they want me to come back, then they'll honour it. I can't see myself getting out of the deal unless the car is well under what I was expecting. My only main concern is the interior and options, other than that it's all good.

  • Have seen it in the red, very noice :)

    • tell me more.. i ordered in red…

      • +1

Lol you'll be happy with it

        • +2

haha i'll take it! would've ordered white but i heard everyone else did and it was flat so figured at least the red might have some depth to it.

          • +1

@drprox: Red GR Yaris crew checking in.

          • @drprox: It's Feverish Red, so just need to look for a Corolla or Camry in your state in that colour to get an idea of it. Looks good with the black wheels

            • @spackbace: Yeah reckon a corolla I walk past is in it. Looks good. Would have preferred a darker red colour but trusting it'll beat flat white any day!

Sure that little car worth that much? Toyota so easy to get rust anyway, this price enough to purchase two kia and plenty money left if you bargain hard.

    • +1

Are you a car enthusiast? Definitely doesn't sound like you are. This is an inane comment.

      This is an absolute bargain.

All the spy shots of them sitting in the docks confirm we have a very very high spec version of this car. 40k for a base car wasn't bad. 40k for aussie spec (wish we got torsen) is crazy.

    • How can you compare a kia to this? Do you even know what his car is?

    • why would you even want two Kias? in case the first one rusts away or dies?
      do you even drive?

    https://www.caradvice.com.au/894381/five-reasons-why-the-gr-…

That's a really good write-up of the good things about the car. In particular:

What’s even more impressive, is who is building them. The GR factory is the new gathering spot for master technicians, that Toyota calls 'Takumi'.

Can anyone become a Takumi? Sure, if you have 60,000 hours worth of experience building cars at Toyota.

Let’s say you’re a hard worker, and complete 9 hour shifts on average. Based on 251 working days in a year, it would take you 26.5 years before you become eligible to swing spanners as a Takumi, in the GR factory.

  • I get mine in January :D

    • how's it drive compared to other hot hatches or sport cars you've driven?

      how about interior/tech?

if u had to describe the drive in ten words or less?

      • +1

        It's not January yet…

      • I've had a test drive, and coming from a older WRX STi, its very comparable, in driveability and surprisingly sound. Turbo felt fast to spool up, for a factory car (my WRX was modded) Very planted, great brakes, unfortunately I didn't get to take it to the limit and on public road.

Interior was ok, little cheapish, seats good, seat height not bad compared to the Subaru. Speaker meh.

        Fun affordable pocket rocket.

  • I regret not putting a down payment on this car. It'll be a collectible for sure.

There are already people out there trying to mod this vehicle:
