[Pre Order] Toyota GR Yaris $39,950 Drive-Away for The First 1000 Orders (Save ~$9,550 + On-Road Costs)

3730

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris will have a sky-high recommended retail price of $49,500 plus on-road costs, but the first 1000 buyers will be able to secure one from $39,950 drive-away when order books open from midday next Wednesday.

An additional special offer will give the first 50 buyers of the GR Yaris a fuel discount of 20c per litre for the first 12 months, when purchased via the company's myToyota portal.

Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

Power is distributed via a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, and the hatch can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2 seconds.

The 0-100km/h time makes the GR Yaris quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, but nearly half-a-second slower than the outgoing Volkswagen Golf R.

Online and in-dealer pre-sale reservations start on 23 September

        Chinese MG is great value!

    • +4

Would love to buy one, but just can't afford a new car with a $40k price tag anymore. Always had Toyota from my first car and got an 86 on release. Imported a Crown Majesta 2 years ago, and will sell to finance bringing a Century over next year once covid dies down (hopefully).

I'm definitely not the target audience as I can't afford to buy one, but as a car dude it makes me happy to see cars like this being made.

      • -4

You say you can't afford one but you're going to import a $200,000 Toyota?

        Sure….

        • +7

Mid 2000 Centuries, the update 6sp can be had between 20-30k depending on kms. I'll get around 20k for my Crown as it is when I sell it.

The $200k Century is the newest model which I obviously can't afford, and don't even like the look of to be honest.

You come off as a dick in your post, just fyi.

  • +8

Toyota should just be honest and admit that this is only going to sell at $39k. No one is going to pay $50k for this.. especially when they know people paid $39k for the same thing.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, bought 3.

  • Thought it was only $10,000. Made me jump off my seat :(

  • $40k car with the interior of a $15k car

    • +2

But with the spirit of a $50k car :S

    • +2

Performance over tactile perfection. I'll take performance.

  • +3

    Man that car is fugly!

  • Yaris for 50k RRP someone is on smoke at Toyota

  • Adding a turbo on your engine is a sign it needs more cylinders. V8 powaahhh

    • +1

      Too heavy!

    • Only milk and juice come in 2 litres.

  • Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

Yeahhhh, but it’s still a Yaris.

    • +3

It has nothing in common with the standard Yaris except the name.

It's built off the WRC homologation model and doesn't even share the same drive train.

  • Imagine the opportunity cost - what you can do with that money & travel time? ;)
    VR travel ~$0 cost
Work from home ~healthy positive ca$$hflow.
Walk to the beach & activities ~ $0 cost
Social media / VR friends ~ $0 cost
Ozbargain activity ~ unpredictable loss disguised as bargain :(
Healthy decissions ~$39,950 saving (how much USB/SSD storage & Eneloops is insanely huge:)

    • What?

      • surely they had a stroke while typing that up

    • Well, apparently as a non-car enthusiast, your priorities are not performance cars.

  • +2

If they didn't call it a Yaris I think they'd have a much easier time selling it. It looks like a decent little car but Yaris is associated with a cheap hatch unfortunately.

  • Spend 15k more to get a used F87 M2 or 1M Coupe, isn't that way more delicate for car enthusiasts?

    • +3

      Wrong person

    • Enthusiast want BMW? BMW enthusiasts perhaps

  • +2

1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque

this should be in the gutless 86 , stuff that crappy boxer

and they should've call this ae86 instead of yaris , immediate sold-out before pre-order begins

    • Agree that an 86 with 200kw would’ve been amazing. Centre of gravity height would’ve suffered but not a massive deal. Let’s see what they put in the GR86

      • The current 86 already struggle in the rain, let along more power.

        • Standard tyres — they're the low rolling resistance Michelins used on the Prius.

          • @Speckled Jim: Used to have Pilot Super Sport on all 4 corners. Tires too thin.

            • @[Deactivated]: Supersport arent good in the wet either. Even in the dry, Supersport needs some heat to perform well.
Supersport are just as thick as other tyres that do well in the wet.

              • @8azinga: Sorry. Meant the rear wheels are too narrow for the car.

  • +1

Give me the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R or Volkswagen Golf R any day over this toy car, any day.

    • Okay grandpa

      • Hey he did mention the trophy R. That thing is legit! Not so much the golf though..

        • Oh 100%, but it's still no AWD rally monster.

    • +3

So you'd take an 80k hatch over a 40k hatch? Who wouldn't? I'd take a Supra over both but they're more expensive again.

  • -4

This is not a bargain. Why would you pay 40k for a trashbox corolla.

    • +5

Another uninformed comment, has nothing in common with the Corolla let alone the normal Yaris (except the name).

  • honestly, I would rather pay this much for a Yaris EV than a 3 cylinders fire ball.

When I saw a Yaris running beside a Cooper, I knew there are big difference.

    • The current Maxi Cooper? No, thanks, no. BMW went abit too far… they call ths "Mini" ?

Thought my old R52 was already stretching, to call it a mini.

  • +2

Do they really expect the 1001st buyer to pay 10k more than the 1000 before?

    • Yes. 50k DA and anniversary saler, discount of $10,001.

  • First 1000 pre-orders? Be surprised if 10 people signed up this. If you’re gonna spend this sort of cash get yourself a second hand focus rs, a45, or rs3

    • +15

Because buying out-of-warranty European performance cars is a great idea.

      • Good for kids just got out of school and think they are the next Ricciard. Saw a few went straight into the gutter at tight hairpin down Royal National Park.

  • +2

I'd buy it if it was electric

  • +4

Kia stinger for 50k driveaway. Same car cops use in highway patrol these days. 0-100 in under 5, Korean quality and tech.

    • +1

Didn’t realise they’re so cheap now. That’s excellent value if correct. You sure that’s for the 6 cylinder?

    • +1

The highway patrol aren't chasing suspects in the 4-cylinder model.

    • None of the cops in our area use the Stingers. They are all BMW 5 series or Chrysler 300 SRT

      • My mate bought a Chrysler 300 SRT new
Broke down 3 times in 3 months, with the car going into limp mode
New engine installed and broke down again - dealers mechanic told him sell it asap and don't buy another Chrysler 300 SRT due to North American quality control

BMW 5 series, we must be copying the UK now - fancy!

    • Kind of like comparing an SS commodore. Apples and oranges. But yeah I appreciate the price parity

  • +7

At the current price point, I salute Toyota for bringing this to market. I think it's a genuine bargain for the performance and driving experience on offer.

The 50k price point is a whole different ballgame because you bring in many more competitors and presumably people with much more flexible budgets.

It's a niche market and the normal consumer most likely won't understand the proposition on offer, as evidenced by a lot of the comments here. But if anyone can keep the affordable drivers car market alive, it's Toyota.

    • +1

If your spending 40k on a hot hatch you obviously have your finances in order to buy an indulgent car. May as well look into spending slightly more for more options.
Do people really say wow I've saved 40k now I'm gonna go buy me a sexy sporty hatch ??? This car is 50k normally anyway, so it's intended for that bracket.

    • Good old Rolla Sportivo. The 140kws rocked! Not so much the rear suspension and brakes.

  • If you water this everyday it will grow into a Corolla, or if you're really lucky, maybe a Camry.

Now that's what I call a high yield investment.

    • +4

Water it for a hundred years. It'll become a Century.

  • -1

    Thanks OP. Bought 10

  • Wonder how it will compare to a Clio III RS.

  • +1

    DAAAYUM 2020 YOU CRAZY.

  • -1

    Thanks, bought 10.

  • +1

I know its a lot of money, but this may well become a collectors car if you get the right spec…

  • +1

That's actually a good price for this car

  • I can't wait for the episode where crotchety grandpa Al from the skid factory teaches us how to do this Yaris right.

    • +11

      only a Maloo right m8

oherwise all the boys will make fun of ur pp

        only a Maloo right m8

The Maloo that will get trashed by this thing on anything resembling a mildly curved road.

        • -1

another whos never driven a performance rwd.

          • @abuch47: I have I have driven old BMW 5 series when I was young.
            This one: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/53/BMW_525i…
I drove it like I stole it, and I remember it would corner much faster than other cars I have driven, also the back feels like it is steering too, almost like it is sliding and helping you turn the corner.

It felt too dangerous. Like I can keep going faster and faster into each corner. I am a super safe Front wheel drive driver now.

          • +1

@abuch47: If you think a Maloo would beat this thing around anything but an oval, you're delusional.

            • @SydStrand:

              you're delusional.

Pot kettle. Manufacturers and tested 0-100 times are better for the maloo since 2006 but thats not the point. The yaris GR will be a track beast as every F/R/AWD performance car is. Real enthusiasts don't make wild claims about the products they choose, remember your car is not your personality.

              • +2

@abuch47: 0 - 100 means diddly squat unless all you're comparing is standing starts in a straight line. The GR Yaris will thrash a Maloo around any circuit, which apparently you disagreed with.

another whos [sic] never driven a performance rwd.

But then you decided to change your tune.

The yaris GR will be a track beast as every F/R/AWD performance car is.

So what is it? Either this car beats your bogan chariot or it doesn't.

remember your car is not your personality.

Says the user rushing to defend the honour of their Maloo, accusing others of not driving RWDs with no basis in fact, whose AVI is an R34. Yep.

                • @SydStrand: comment speaks magnitudes on your abilities

                • @SydStrand: No. The Maloo will do better on a NASCAR circuit.

Suspect the GR stock will top out at low 200km/hr.

Would be keen to see Nur lap time on this beast.

200kw out of a 1.6L could mean a heck of turbo lag. Suspect something similar to the STi.

Not only that but you will get strange stares from passerbys thinking you're a hot girl driving it but actually a guy(Who may or may not be hot)….unless you don't mind the strange stares

        • +4

You seem to care a bit too much what others think

    • +16

I'm sorry that your manhood is so fragile that you feel it needs moral support from your choice of automobile.

      • +2

The whole automotive industry is based around people's egos, you'd have to seriously have none to be seen in this. I'd change the world "bloke" to "person" in the original comment though.

        • +3

This car's too small to be my daily driver, but as a secondary, weekend car? Absolutely. I bet I'd have a lot more fun in this than the balding midlife crisis in a Mustang. This notion that only women drive small hatchbacks is a little sexist and rather outdated, especially when it's a monster like this.

          • @SydStrand: Toy car!

          • @SydStrand: you've never driven a performance rwd then.

sexism is braindead so is every other generalization you used.

            • @abuch47:

you've never driven a performance rwd then.

Oh shit, I should have known your superpower was knowing strangers' driving record via the internet.

sexism is braindead so is every other generalization you used.

              Wut.

        • +1

There will always be people with massive egos that believe this. Meanwhile others just buy cars they like

      • -1

Isn't that's why we have separate things for MEN or WOMEN but not both?

    • Plz list emotional support cars

  • +1

I'm sorry this is a total steal.
