[Pre Order] Toyota GR Yaris $39,950 Drive-Away for The First 1000 Orders (Save ~$9,550 + On-Road Costs)

3730

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris will have a sky-high recommended retail price of $49,500 plus on-road costs, but the first 1000 buyers will be able to secure one from $39,950 drive-away when order books open from midday next Wednesday.

An additional special offer will give the first 50 buyers of the GR Yaris a fuel discount of 20c per litre for the first 12 months, when purchased via the company's myToyota portal.

Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

Power is distributed via a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, and the hatch can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2 seconds.

The 0-100km/h time makes the GR Yaris quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, but nearly half-a-second slower than the outgoing Volkswagen Golf R.

Online and in-dealer pre-sale reservations start on 23 September

They should have given different name for this.

    • hahahha exactly! Yaris means the cheapest price LOL

  • +10

I'd say $40K for the GR Yaris is pretty good for what you get, new car, driveaway prices.

For a small AWD hatch with 150kW/tonne, only thing that comes close is the Golf R, which is $57K new driveaway. Won't even talk about S3, A35, or new BMW 1 series xDrive as they are all luxury hot hatches.

For other hatches with similar power:

Civic Type R - $58K (FWD, but handles well)
Golf GTI - $49K (FWD, slower)
    i30 N - $45K (FWD, slower)
Fiesta ST - $36K (FWD, much less power)

If this handles just as well as a Civic Type-R, this will sell like hotcakes.

    • Agreed.
A Polo GTI or Fiesta ST wont come close in terms of performance or handling and i would gladly pay an extra $4-5K over those.
It is a tiny car but that's what is needed for rally.

These are current, full list price from website now.
      Polo GTI - $35,490 DA
      Fiesta ST - $35,808 DA

      Golf GTI - $49,990 DA
      Golf R - $56,990 DA
      Focus ST - $48,923 DA
      Civic Type R - $57,674 DA
      i30N - $45,447 DA
      Megane RS 280 Sport - $51,990 DA
      WRX - $45,134 DA
      WRZ STI - $57,808 DA

      Toyota 86 GTS - $41,313 DA
      Mazda MX5 1.5L - $39,801 DA
      Nissan 370Z - $51,085 DA

      • MX5 1.5l is a thing of the past.

RRP is rarely the correct indicator.

        • I listed MX5 1.5l as a competitor on price to show what else way available for $40K.
I didnt say RRP is what people pay but just for reference. Golf GTI and R's are going for list price or very close to at the moment. Focus ST is pretty new and also getting very little discounts. WRX's have been selling well as well and not much discount given. I couldnt even get a $2K discount on one 3 months ago.

          • @8azinga: Dont know about you. My ND GT 2.0 was $42k @ launch. The STi was $53k. (I did cross shop the WRX, $42k is where the sweet spot was). 1.5L ND is no longer available at local market, only revised 2.0L 135kws versions are sold. (Hence my comment of the 1.5L being a thing of the past).

            Mates/family bought S3s for $58-60k, A250 for $46k @ launch.

All cash upfront with no trade in.

Market is distorted at the moment. It went for a dip between March - May. Then went up due to supply issues. In fact. My shopping trolley's market value went up since it was bought earlier this year.

Not sure about other people's buying experience. But I tend to find Toyota being the only car manufacturer to be firm/close to asking RRP, followed by Honda and Mazda. European metals are 10-20% on the inflatted RRP.

            • @[Deactivated]: The 1.5L is still available on the website at least when I made that list so I put it in.
When did you buy your car? Prices have changed in the last few months with less discount given.
I looked at a wrx in 2018 and could have got the base model for $39,990 DA but couldnt even get the $2K discount ($43K) 3 months ago. Just look at forums. People were getting golf R's for a lot less before covid.

              • +1

@8azinga: I see. Didnt know they still sell the 1.5L, thought it is gone for good.

Bought mine at launch (pre-order), so 2015.

Yes. Price is distorted. Including used cars.

      • The i30n lux pack which most people get is closer to Focus ST price (48/49k).

The base model isn't that popular.

  • +3

I don't care how fast it is, $40k for an ugly as sin Yaris, you'd have to be crazy.

    • +9

Looks are subjective mate. You think it's ugly, I think it's nice.

      • Suspect there's a reason they're offering 10k discount to get rid of them. No doubt there will always be some who like any car. Good luck to you.

        • +1

Jesus, they're out in full-force today!

        • Yeah and that reason is more related to current state of the economy rather than not being able to sell these. Will be going like hot cakes to JDM car enthusiats.

  • +4

40k for a Yaris. haha []No[] thanks

  • This deal made a bad deal to normal deal.

  • More than double the wasps in a 1.5L miata and not much heavier. Nice.

    • 2.0 mx5 has 180hp right? And weighs 1100kg

      • 118 or 135kws, depending wether it is pre or post 2018.

        • +2

I have 2015 2.0L. People keep trying to race me at the lights and they always win.

          • @Save Medicare: 7 seconds. Not quick on straight by today's standard. All the P platter in their Golf takes off alot quicker than me @ red lights. Doesnt mean much.

TBH. The ND is still my favourite, and a fun drivers car. More satisfying than the STI.

  • After seeing this at 60-70k in Europe it's nice to know I can buy one easily enough here without having to justify costs

  • -1

So, what's next from Toyota? 120k limited edition Camry on special for 110k drive away? Can't wait!

  • +3

I've been a hatch fan since I could drive. Always loved the power to weight ratio of them. Giant killers.

But as much as this hatch looks the goods (physically, on paper, the lot), it's getting very close in my mind on whether a hot hatch of the future should be anything other than EV?

I recently had the pleasure of driving a Tesla… and holy hell the instant acceleration! I couldn't believe it… I was literally giggling like a little school girl.

I'm just waiting for a cheaper release into a smaller hatch footprint, and I reckon it will once and for all kill off petrol performance hot hatches.
It surely can't be that far down the road? $50k on something like this, or for around the same price in 3-4 years for a Performance EV?

    It's coming.

    • +1

I mean if you prefer zero driver engagement, sure there will be a car for you in 3-4 years time.

      • +3

Other than completely missing the point of my post entirely, I will respond to yours.

Zero driver engagement? You don't think a super responsive EV on a race track/track day would be engaging?
I can assure you, I would NEVER describe an EV as "zero driver engagement".

    • +1

Also driven the Tesla model 3. We get shafted on price in Australia. There should be discounts like there are overseas for green vehicles. Awesome cars

      • +1

        Politics.

Labor was going to push EV harder (incentivise more uptake) … Liberals put fear into everyone without a brain about "Labor taking your utes away".

I'm sad where our country could have been after the last 10 years :(.
Instead of transition led by Government, its now being led by business IN SPITE of Government.

  • +1

This is actually a pretty great price, if you were in the market for this type of car you're getting a heap of performance for the money. A fully loaded Fiesta ST is close to this price drive away, but the Yaris is a far more serious performance car and it'll be a future collectible without a doubt. If I had the cash and garage space, I'd jump on one…. or wait for the high performance version.

    • +2

"Yaris is a far more serious performance car and it'll be a future collectible without a doubt…"

No offence..but almost every statement in that sentence smells diabolically wrong.. just observing and comparing traditional 'classic/collectors performance cars'

      • Thinking Civic Type R - …. yeah they hyped a bit, but don't think they are good resellers in the long term

though Mx-6 are going up in price - … dunno

      • I meant it more in the way that it'll garner quite a cult following and become collectible in the way that many classic JDM performance cars have over the last few years. Did you mean MX-5's are going up in price? They are also starting to go up, especially the NA model with pop-up headlights. I've got a special edition British racing green one with tan interior sitting the garage.

      • +1

        Mx-6

That brings back memories, haven't seen one of those atrocities in ages.

40K for a Yaris? Australians are not “cashcow”Toyota

    • +7

2 x super withdrawal and Jobkeeper …payments.. easy

      • LOL, ATO is on the way

    • +1

      It’s cheaper here than overseas

      • Thanks for correcting mate, but the price still shocked me

    • +2

If this was a euro brand everyone would be gushing over it. Personally I'd much rather have this over a Golf. I've passed to many broken down Volkswagens at the side of the freeway.

  • Any real car are made into a Tamiya mini 4WD would be a damn good car:

  • +3
  • +1

Damn 40K for this - no wonder it's already on sale before it even releases.

  • For 40-50k you'd want it to have a top interior.

    • I agree, don't have much hope though.

The interior of the 86 is nothing special, this is lower volume with more expensive parts. They will probably be cutting costs somewhere.

    • +1

If you want luxury you buy a golf or German car, if you want performance bang for buck, this is the way to go

      • +2

(fropanity) me, I would buy this GR Yaris if it had no interior and just a Haltech type race display, roll cage and a single front seat…

  • At $40k I think this is awesome, and I'd be snatching one up if I was in the market for a car right now. At $50k I think it has too much competition which will likely be nicer to drive in the real world even if this is probably quicker on a track.

  • +1

The previous Yaris started at $15’990 Driveaway for a Manual, and $17’990 Driveaway for an Auto.

The current one now starts at $27’300.

The GR version will retail at $50K

So, I expect the next version to start at $165K, with the option of paying an extra $3000 for a 4 Pack of Eneloops

    • +3

If it comes with 8 wheel drive and a w12 engine?

    $50k for Yaris?

  • +1

"The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car."

Not true. Koeniggsec Gemera have 600hp from 2L 3cyl, 1700hp total hybrid. Not exactly a high production model, but facts are facts.

    • +4

      300 worldwide is barely "production"

    • +2

Except the Koenigsegg relies on 2 motors to make its 1700hp.

      • -1

Yes… 1700hp hybrid but 600hp from the 3cyl engine, as it is in my post. Also what's the definition of production? It's not a one off, it's not a concept car, it's not a non street legal racer. It's a car you can walk into a dealership right now and find in stock.

I'm not disparaging the toyota, it's impressive and if I was shopping for a car right now I'd have ordered one, but evidently it's possible to wrangle even more from tiny engines and that specific statement isn't true.

  • What? A turbo charged Yaris? Heard it all now. Will this still be able to use the e10? Must not lose that heritage.

For a few cents more and one could get the more prestigious Honda Civic Type R or to the lesser extent, the ever competitive Hyundai i30 N.

    • I think if you are looking at a hot hatch, you have already given up on prestige. Otherwise there is the Bmw m240 which has it all, but you are looking at over double the price. Even then BMW doesn't give you their top spec interior

  • -1

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

I thought the Gemera has the most powerful 3 cylinder engine in a production car. Last time I checked, 447kW is more than 200kW…

Now is the Gemera 1.86005 million dollars more car than a Yaris GR. Yes. But I also don't have 1.86005 million dollars.

    • only 300 built worldwide, hardly production

      • +1

        Gatekeeping production cars? That's new!

How many GR Yaris' do you think are being made? Sure, more than the Gemera, but with Ferrari and Lamborgini selling 10k and 8k cars each last year, the GR is going to end up rarer than some of their models.

After all, similar models like the 695 and 208 GTi smashed all sales records.

  • +1

Are you serious? 40k for a tuna can?

    • -1

Yes except even John West passed on this one.

  • +3

I can't lie, I'm thinking of getting one just to add to my collection of fun toys.

    That will make 6 vehicles.

    I think I may have a problem.

    • You have the same problem as I do. You're running out of room in the garage.

I'm moving soon, to a place with a bigger garage

      • I'm trying. That step where I am starts at $2.7M.
My plan for that move is 12 months away 😕

  • Just watched a few videos on YouTube and it looks like it will be a hoot. Very tempted

  • +5

Love that toyota are making fun cars again. I personally wouldnt spend $40k or $50k on a yaris, but it will be a great deal in 5 yrs time when depreciation hits.

With the supra and nissan remaking the Z, the turbo cars of the 90's are making a great come back :D

    • Agree! Toyota been patenting few interesting new engine design geared up for fun. Im saving up for MR2 replacement.

      • Good old MR2. Scary and fun.

  • -5

preordering a car. you cucksumers are the stupidest

    • Preordering For a $10k saving, not preordering at RRP

      • preordering

        • Ahh, I see your point. You can't pre-order when you are ordering in the first place.

  • With this model, the youth can now unleashed their Automan 2.0 true crazy driving potential.

  • People comparing this to other cars based on kW alone please open your eyes. Ugliest car in its field.

  • +3

I feel like anyone comparing this to a golf r is not the target market. This will simply destroy the golf on a track or in any serious driving application.

    • +1

To be fair to the Golf, which car is better all rounder day to day with a typical small family?

      And I hate VW products.

Hell I would take a $39,990 Golf GTI core over this.

      • I won't argue with you because you're right. It's just not made for people who want a family car.

        • +1

A spare car. I keep a spare Honda Jazz as shopping trolley.

      • Many people would if you could actually get Golf GTI's for that price.

  • Definitely interested.

  • Looks great on paper….but……it's a Yaris (and bog ugly)

    • I love the styling. Although I also like the Civic Type R so you can judge my taste in cars on that.

  • +2

The fact that Toyota is bringing out these banging cars just shows they've still got it in them. I have noticed much more aggressive designs in their cars - even on the Camry - which is renowned for being the plainest of cars. I'm loving this direction for Toyota and couldn't be happier for them. Now, just gotta save up for that Supra or MR2 replacement (whenever it happens).

  • Will insurance cost more than the car?

    • Depends. WRX Sti $800/yr. MX5 ND $900/yr.

      • Based on those 2 figures. Its not bad then. WRX used to cost thousands for insurance :( the “ram raid” days… maybe they are less likely to be involved in an accident in 2020.

        • Both cars insured with different insurers. One with Bingle and one with CGU.

          The Jazz is @ $700/yr.

All insured for 5000km/yr. Wish I can do 2000km/yr.

          Worthwhile comparing different insurers.

  • +1

Hope all the Japanese makers are going to bring in more sports cars. S2k will be my pick.

    • What are your thoughts on the S660?

      • +1

Wouldn't mind it as a spare fun car. If I only get to keep one, ND is the one.

        A few reasons:
        1. Not a car locally available - parts, resell etc
        2. Insurance. Goes back to point 1
        3. Not well suited for AU outside of metro area

S2000 is a very special car. Nothing to-date from Honda is remotely close to what S2K offers. Engineered from ground up as a 2 seater sports car. Not those German taxis with engine swap and suspension tune.

  • +1

is it limit 1 per customer?

  • Buy one for 40k, drive for 2 years and sell for 40k when the RRP is 50k. mAtHs.

    • More likely any 2nd hand offer would take into account that the car was released with a 20% discount upfront.

  • I had a 2005 Toyota Red Yaris…

I miss that car, was so easy to park anywhere!!!!

  • +1

    Subaru owner here.
Why did you compare it with WRX?

    • It's a car made to be a base for a rally car and proper AWD (none of this FWD with a rear diff). Only car that comes close is the WRX, since Focus RS and Evo's aren't sold anymore.
