[Pre Order] Toyota GR Yaris $39,950 Drive-Away for The First 1000 Orders (Save ~$9,550 + On-Road Costs)

3730

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris will have a sky-high recommended retail price of $49,500 plus on-road costs, but the first 1000 buyers will be able to secure one from $39,950 drive-away when order books open from midday next Wednesday.

An additional special offer will give the first 50 buyers of the GR Yaris a fuel discount of 20c per litre for the first 12 months, when purchased via the company's myToyota portal.

Although the price aligns with the Subaru WRX, the Toyota hot hatch is a class size smaller. The ageing WRX offers less power, however, and weighs nearly 170kg more than the 1280kg GR Yaris.

The engine in the Toyota GR Yaris is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol three-cylinder putting out 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque, making it the most powerful three-cylinder engine ever offered in a production car.

Power is distributed via a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels, and the hatch can reach 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2 seconds.

The 0-100km/h time makes the GR Yaris quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, but nearly half-a-second slower than the outgoing Volkswagen Golf R.

Online and in-dealer pre-sale reservations start on 23 September

        • just got a phone call from a rep, est November. (yea, i know, too long right?) White is the best color for decals etc. However i'm more into black, not sure why.

      • +2

        Super White for me :)

        • can't imagine how good it looks on the street with black contrasting carbon fibre roof to be honest with you!

edit: and not sure if anyone realize that the door of this Yaris is frameless? i mean the the window is frameless, it will add in more into the exclusivity of this tiny car, that looks like a sport car! lol

        • good choice, shame we didn't get the pearl white too as a second white option! I agree with below will look great with the roof.

          • +1

@drprox: Yea. My ND with pearl white and black roof works well.

      • I've been doing as much reading as I can on the car. I won't preorder right now but thinking it over! What I wondered though was whether you thought they might be painted better than the stock Yaris as been reading a lot about how poorly it's done on the new car! Hoping given these must involve some sort of different production line maybe they will do a better job!

        • Lol. I Wouldnt be too worry about the paint job. Only hoping it is not as paper thin as the MX5.

I am more concerned about what Toyota charge for scheduled service. If Supra is anything to go by, $400/yr. Pretty affordable.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Wait, the Supra is $400/year? Holy (profanity), that's cheap.

            • +1

@he11bent: $385 every 12 months or 15K km to be exact.

            • @he11bent: Is that cheap though?

Most services is just doing a routine check of the car lol.

              • @Circly: Yeah it is. My Renault Clio was over that per year. Never again

              • +1

                @Circly: A Ford Fiesta ST is $299/yr for services 1,2 & 4. 3rd service is $414
                A Polo GTi prices are $366, $502, $459, $1246 for the first 4 services.
A Mazda 3 would probably be more than the supra.

$385 is probably on the high side for a toyota but cheap compare to others. Camry is $200/service. An 86 is $200 and that uses 0W20 oil but it is every 9 months/15K km service intervals.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yaris have a service interval of less than 1 year or 10K km.

                • @8azinga: Not too bad then

                • @8azinga: 86 is bad when spark plugs need replacing. $800+ job.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Still cheaper than the 4th service for a Polo GTI.

                    • @8azinga: I am referring to spark plugs alone… coz the engine need to be jacked out for spark plugs. Some dude on here complaint that Toyota wanted $1k+ for it, whilst Subaru charge $800 for the job, and won't do it on a Toyota. Boxer engines are painful to work with. Not quite as bad as the rotary.

4th year on our old A3 wasnt too bad. $1k, all fluid changed. Similar on the Mini as well. The CLA250 was $1.2k. Recent bimmers are better, depends on vehicle usage. Still averages out to be roughly $600 a year. Honda charged $850 for similar job done.

Most cars on annual service schedule averages out $500-600/year.

The worst ones are 6 monthly schedule. STI is $400 a pop every 6 months, as well usual "major" one goes to $1k+.

                      • @[Deactivated]: Take it to a subaru specialist and it will be even cheaper than the subaru dealer. You dont need to jack up the engine to replace but that's the way toyota does it. hence, the labour cost.
The guy who complained on here and said it was $900 for the the 90K km service which includes the spark plug change.
As i said, still cheaper than the Polo GTI 4th year service and overall, would be cheaper than most cars, even with the higher priced spark plug service.

          • @[Deactivated]:

I am more concerned about what Toyota charge for scheduled service.

            $260 capped every 6m/10,000km for 3yrs

            • @spackbace: Have you got written confirmation that it is every 6months? We're getting shafted if that the case. Maybe that's how they are making up for some of the 10K discount.

              • @8azinga: Yep

Not really, premium car etc etc. You'd really want 6m oil changes for a car like this

                • +1

@spackbace: UK and japan are 12 month intervals so why is australia any different?
Even A45S is 12 month and that engine is arguably more highly tuned than this.

                  • @8azinga: At the end of the day it's not my call! I'm just the messenger

                • +1

@spackbace: Can't play the premium car card if other markets are double the time for servicing.

Must be a way to recoup the promotion costs. Double the cost I don't care but keep it at 12 months Toyota!

  • not sure if anyone realize that the door of this Yaris is frameless? i mean the the window is frameless, it will add in more into the exclusivity of this tiny car, that looks like a sport car!

    • Knew it was frameless but would never think it adds to exclusivity. The frameless window on the 86/brz rattles whenever you have it even a little way down so i dont think it's such a good thing.

      • rattling window is never a good thing. have you get it checked by the dealer or any mec? above i mean exclusive tiny car only, not comparing it to any sport cars. and i always like frameless window cars.

        • Its normal. Once the window is down a touch, it doesnt lock in at the top so can shake around more, especially over any bumps

          • @8azinga: you mean it's normal with this car or normal among all frameless windows? as far as i can remember, my sti,z4,325i, all never had such rattling.

            • @0031nek: normal with this car, although I've only been in 1 other. Toyota service said its normal. I think its lack of sound deadening/hollowness in doors means it sounds worse than it is.

  • +1

    Ozbargainers,

Apparently the wording on the Toyota page has changed and now says sports cloth seats.

The original press release said we get suede and leather seats. If true that's disappointing.

Also JBL speakers may have been removed.

    • +2

agreed! the seats are one of the few "luxury" items which lift the interior beyond regular Yaris. Would be a big miss

      • Hopefully not the case. Hoping the specs are released soon.

I wonder how many cars they sold today.

    • I think the order page always said "premium sports fabric" The page after you click "pre-order my new yaris GR" in the box that says "Your order" with the price showing.
It does differ from the press release a week ago though.
I saw someone's contract say "Vehicle Trim - Silver Synthetic Leather"

      • Mine says silver synthetic leather… Whatever that means.

People also have different whites on their contract.. Ie. glacier white or super white or pearl white…

Sounds like Toyota don't really know what we are getting yet.

        • well that's interesting! Can you cancel and get a refund? and what time frame?

          • @drprox: I think it says 3 days on the website.

            I don't think I'll be cancelling though.

            Edit*

            "Your money back guarantee
If you change your mind, you can cancel your pre-order within 3 business days after paying your deposit and you’ll receive a full refund.“

            • @Circly: geez still, bit stiff if you order white and you don't actually know which white!
though I know for most guys it wouldn't change their minds

              • +1

@drprox: Pretty sure its glacier white as per toyota website. The contracts are done by the dealers who probably got it wrong.

                • @8azinga: 100% Glacier White

Pearl white is being reserved for the Rallye edition

              • +1

@drprox: I think the colour is the same but Toyota have mixed up the colour names?

More bummed if we get the crap seats despite all the pictures and announcements saying we get the leather suede ones.

                • @Circly: The interior shots in the GR Yaris page show a car with the WRC badging on the centre console and the captions say it's an overseas model shown :(

    • Seats are leather bolstered, suede inserts

      Still has JBL audio

  • OP. Can you update link to this pelase https://www.toyota.com.au/all-new-gr-yaris

  • Looks like it is getting ozbargained. The site is crazily SLOW…

  • +1

    got mine, Thanks OP

  • I'm going to wait until my local Toyota dealer has a demo model, because by the looks of it, we don't know what the interior is going to be like. I'm tempted at $40k but 50k for the base model, I don't think so. When I was talking to the sales rep, he said the rally edition will be around 58K. I was thinking ordering it in red but white looks great too, hmm decisions decisions.

  • The link in the post https://www.caradvice.com.au/883804/2021-toyota-gr-yaris-fro… says Toyota are predicting 12-18 months to sell the first 1000 before reviewing the price, it'll be very interesting to see how accurate that timeframe turns out to be !

    • Seems there are reports out that over half of the 1000 were gone within the first day.

That 12-18 months seems doubtful now.

      • All 1000 now sold. Took just six days 😳

  • They had me at carbon fibre roof… if I had the garage space…

    • its plastic with carbon fibre in it. They did a similar thing with the Lexus LFA i think.

      • So is the carbon fibre molded on to the plastic? I've read articals and watch youtube vids on the GR, and nothing has been mentioned about this.

      • +3

Aren't all carbon fibre automotive parts carbon fibre set in a resin/plastic of some sort? Otherwise it's just a fabric.

        • I understand some sort of polymer is used to combine the carbon fibre. But I'm curious of how the roof use made on the GR. Did Toyota use a carbon fibre wrap on to plastic or is it one solid piece. I guess logic would dictate that it would be one piece, but Toyota may of used a wrap to bring cost down.

          • @telby: They couldn't market it as a carbon fibre roof, if it's just a wrap. They've mentioned the roof on a few occasions, to bring weight down

A unique three-door body - available in white, red or black exterior paint - is made from lightweight materials including carbon-fibre polymer for the roof and aluminium for the bonnet, doors and tailgate.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_fiber_reinforced_polyme…

          • @telby: Using a wrap would be a pretty stupid move. Why skimp at the very last stage when they've spent so much money and effort creating a car from scratch. The only part common part with the original Yaris is the dashboard - everything else is new.

That and I can't see a plastic roof with a wrap being very durable at all. Most wraps only last a few years before they require re-application.

            • @atlas: @atlas yeah so the one we get has CF plastic and then a CF wrap on top (to look nicer).

I was also thinking about longevity. Hopefully ok.

          • +1

@telby: Check this page out and view the images on the top right of the page which shows 2 versions. A "first edition marble pattern" and a "carbon roof (film)"
            https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/toyota/32741087.html#

That's not saying the film version is not CF reinforced plastic. More that with the first edition, they put more work into getting the CF marble finish to look nice and for normal models, they just use an extra layer of CF with the normal pattern that people are used to seeing for aesthetics. Or it could be a film on top of the CF reinforced roof.

            • @8azinga: Wouldn't surprise me if the images in that gallery end up being the interior the base spec GR comes with either. No premium audio, cloth sports seats etc.

              • @JF: I say that's the model coming to Australia. I'm still interested in the car but I'm a little bit disappointed, after seeing the leather trim and JBL audio on the Toyota website and thinking that's what we're getting. My personal opinion is that I wouldn't pay any more than $40k for this model, and maybe $50K for the rallye. Anyone who pays $50k for this car, after others have paid $40k, must have more money than sense.

                • +4

@telby: Toyota reps on Facebook and Insta have confirmed we get the JBL audio and the leather/suede seats.

                  • +1

@Circly: Thank you. On this occasion, I'm very happy being wrong :)
                    Ordered one in red.

                    • +1
                      • +1

@Circly: Excellent ! I'll be seeing you on the road when we get them. I'll be the one flashing the high beam and giving the thumbs up as you drive by, lol. I knew white would be popular and must admit, it does look awesome. But i've never owned a red car and thought red looks pretty sweet on the GR, especially with the black rims. When I spoke to the Sales rep today, he said everyone that ordered will get a call from Toyota when the demo arrives sometime November, so they can have a test drive. He estimates orders will be filled late December and January. I was kind of hoping for mine in mid to late 2021, later the better for me.

                        • @telby: You want one in mid to late 2021?? Haha thats a while away.

                          I'll high beam you back!

Yeah so 3/4 orders were white so the last 25% were split with black and red. Will certainly be a rarer colour!

                          • @Circly: The sales rep laughed too, when I asked if I get the car delivered mid next year, as if that's going to happen he was probably thinking.
It's hard to say what the red colour looks like on the GR, as the videos and pictures online seem different shades of red.

                            • +1

                              @telby: Turn on subs.

                              https://youtu.be/yPlGZU3TpBs

Btw the red is the same red (feverish red) on the current Corolla and camry).

                              • @Circly: Thanks for the info, good video too. It didn't even dawn on me that the GR doesn't have a rear window wiper.
I think we will be getting the Japanese equivalent of the Yaris RZ. Before on road cost, it's $53361 AU. So we're getting a great deal, if the Japanese price is anything to go by.

                                https://toyota.jp/gryaris/?padid=tjptop_car-search_bdt-GR_gr…

I'm guessing, in this video, this is the interior of the GR coming to Australia. No premium sports seats, but still looks pretty good, though it is leather accented only..

                                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rprRnWmmo7E

                                • @telby: Dam. I thought those seats on the video had leather accents. On closer inspection it appears to be all cloth. The image quality isn't good enough.

                                • @telby: Can't be sure on what exact seats we get. Hopefully we get the premium ones. Remember this is a "50k" car. So specs have to be nice still.

                                  • @Circly: I hope so too. Toyota did say leather and suede accents.

                        • @telby: You should have the car by march. If you order now, they are up to around Feb/March from what the dealer told me. Dont know if its correct info or not though. I'm hoping he's right as then it will be a 21 build.
                          I got red too lol

                          • @8azinga: Good choice in colour. It should make the car go that little bit faster, haha. March would be a better option for me, as I don't have the garage space at the moment

      • The LFA was also genuine carbon fibre. I believe the majority of the body was made from CF, hence why it was so light and strong.

  • Is this one actually circuit package including forged BBS wheels with Michelin pilot sports, different suspension package and red calipers at $39.950? Also Toyota website states 'dual tips exhaust' - would it be dual tip each side or just what most pictures showing (one round tip on each side)?

    • Nope. That's the Rallye model.

One tip each side as well.

      • So which model is actually at the offer of $39,950?

        • +1

The base model without what you mentioned above.

The Rallye model will be out next year and limited to 250 units. Price is TBC.

  • +1

Ordered one in red can't wait

  • I wonder how many cars will be delivered to customers in November. Will those who paid a deposit prior to the 23rd get the first priority (as one would assume) ?

    • Probably no priority. Based on who you bought from i think. Each dealer is allocated a certain amount of cars.

    • November is basically only dealer demos

      • So when do you think customer cars arrive ?

        • +1

As per press release, sometime over the next 18 months 😉

          • @spackbace: Hey spaceback, word on the street is this Yaris has 6 month/10k km servicing.. Can you confirm? Thats a big oof if true.

            • +1

@Circly: No idea tbh. Standard Yaris has 12 months, but performance car with performance oil etc…

              • @spackbace: Yeah I'm readying myself for 6 month servicing. However, the Supra has 12 month intervals…

              • @spackbace: one question I have here. If I ignore that and just bring it in every 12 months, is the warranty void? I know it's not "needs based" servicing like a BMW (unless it is) but curious. FWIW I'll be doing incredibly low km.

                • @drprox: You won't get the 2yr extension warranty on engine/drive-train.

Not servicing as per logbook can also make it difficult to get claims done when you're just outside warranty etc

          • @spackbace: ah yeah.. heard the first batch is already on the water so should be some deliveries early for those who were early adopters

  • +9

I really don't understand why the hate?
To those who keep saying this is just a yaris, I mean seriously, it's like saying.

Ooh that's just a Golf (pointing to a Golf R)
Ooh that's just a Civic (pointing to a Type R)
Ooh that's just a Focus (pointing to a Focus RS)
    Ooh that's just a i30 (pointing to an i30N)
Ooh that's just a Megane (pointing to a RS)
Ooh that's just a A CLASS (pointing to an AMG)
    Ooh that's just a A3 (pointing to a S3)
    Ooh that's just a 3 series (pointing to a M3)
Ooh that's just a Pulsar (pointing to a GTi)
Ooh that's just a Swift (pointing to a GTi)
Ooh that's just a Peugeot 208 (pointing to a GTi)
Ooh that's just a Lancer (pointing to an EVO)
Ooh that's just a Imprezza (pointing to an WRX)
    And who can forget…
Ooh that's just an old old Corolla (pointing to a rare AE86)

I mean people, this GR Yaris shares the name and what, maybe 3 or 4 parts from the standard Yaris. It has already won WRC championship and the car's development and operation is headed by Tommi Makinen who if u don't know who this is, well the GR Yaris is not for you.

I see this to be up there with the likes of the EVOs, WRXs and the Celica GT4

Lastly, from a developments perspective, it's incredibly difficult to build a car from the ground up without any partnership. Think Supra and Z4, MX5 and Abarth, 86 and BRZ, so yea, I think Toyota did an amazing job with the GR Yaris. Considering Mitsubishi has no plans on making a new EVO, it maybe Toyota's last true rally car/sports car before going hybrid such as the NSX and also as per rumored with the next GTR R36.

    • Yeah, that's what pushed me over the edge in to ordering one, was the story behind it. I haven't been this excited about a Japanese car in decades. I think I saw the video about making of the GR on YouTube. It was in Japanese but the translation subs was good enough to understand. When I was at the Toyota dealer on Monday, I had a look at the new Yaris. The only thing that looked the same was the back, and the sides had similar contours. The Rep said the GR is wider and lower.

  • Anyone got a guess as to what it'll likely cost to have the LSDs fitted down the track?
Suspect inevitably this will become an option (with purchase in the after market).

    • +1

Depends whether the standard diff units are welded or bolted. Bolted crown wheels will be far easier to remove and install an LSD. Welded will be more laborious.
The actual LSD units themselves will be relatively cheap. I'm sure there will be a number of helical or clutch-pack based units that will come to market.

      • +1

Thanks for the response mate :)
I'm certainly not an expert so appreciate the detail.

All spoken for now. Allocation filled a lot quicker than I expected!

    • Just wondering how did you find this out? Placed my order at around 4pm…hope I got an allocation.

      • +1

Online orders finished about 6pm AEST.
