Well, I did say initial reaction. I bought them because I’m willing to try based on reviews.

Delivery arriving tomorrow. Keen to have at least one go.

    • +18

They're actually pretty good, have you had one before?

        • +7

          wow

    • Okay so I had one this arvo, and to be frank if nobody told me anything I'd just say "it's a little different" and think nothing more of it.

Bottom line: won't knowingly make a beeline for them, but they really are better than I thought!

  • +25

They're pretty good. The meat ones already contain soy protein and vegetable protein to fill them out. These just have more of it.

    • +1

      More testicles means more iron.

  • +8

They're okay/average for the taste at half price, but definitely not something I'd pay full price for.

    • +28

Come to think of it, I never full price for any store-bought pies.

      • +1

Bakery pies usually are not much chop either. Some are full of cornflour. A good pie is hard to find but worth the search :-)

        • +1

Vilis in South Australia only has meat in their pies. Worth checking out if they sell it in your state ;))

          • -2

@avgbowlofpho: Villi's are also 'Halal'. Not that i care for Halal.

            • -1

@Bunsen: That's convenient. But same here, don't care for Halal

      • But thats just the OzB ethos isnt it? Dont pay full price for anything?

    • +26

      Huh?

      • +1

I think he means that some vegans hate things that resemble meat, like if they have never eaten meat they don't want to buy a product that is designed like meat

        • +24

I think the vast majority of vegetarians are vegetarians due to ethical reasons, not taste preference.

          • @PainToad: I agree, I do have friends who are the type above though

        • +3

I think most vegans don't support animal cruelty, they don't hate don't mind something that mimics meat.

          • @Trippelsewe: That's 100% true, though I would have to say that veggie burgers, veggie sausages, veggie pies, etc don't really "mimic meat" because those foods are all so processed that they're not really meat anymore.

        • If they advertised it as a vegan/vegetarian pie then those people still wouldn't eat it because of the look and taste then?

I really don't understand smurfinaus' comment

    • +12

They're advertising it as meat free, because basically they are made for vegan/vegetarians.

      • +6

'Meat free' and 'plant based' are used specifically to avoid the labels 'vegan / vegetarian'. This is to get sales out of the flexible part of the market who might be looking to eat less meat, and don't want the association with the labels.

    • +4

Maybe Soy and Vegetable Pie doesn't sound as good?

      • some 'meat free' products would say "LAB GROWN FUNGUS"

        • +8

As would the mushrooms in the vegetable aisle.

      • +3

Have you seen how much soy is in regular meat pies?

    • -1

The vegetarians and vegans I know won’t eat a processed pie even if it’s meat free

      • +2

All the ones I know do!

        • Lucky. Most I know eat mainly whole foods for the past decade

On the plus side most are amazing cooks 🤤

      • I sure would/do. Unless it's too much like meat, then I find it offputting haha

      • Smart!

    • +1

There are others that cant eat a standard meat pie, such as practising Hindus, Buddhists, Jews and muslims (non-halal/kosher meat).

  • I thought free is always good. I was damn wrong.

  • +4

I clicked this excitedly thinking it was free meat pies :(

    • Same thought it said a free pack of meat pies

  • +24

So about the same amount of meat compared to a normal meat pie?

    • +9

no meat pies have about 2% more meat and a whole lot of bonemeal and cartilage

    • +6

      Less lips in this.

    • The pies are free, but the packaging you need to get them through the checkout is $4.75

  • +8

Tried these. Not bad. As a cheap pie I'd have not known it was meat free unless told. Half price still too expensive though imo, but worth it just to try one.

I have tried this. It is OK…

Once you put sauces and stuff on it, you cant really tell.

    I'd buy it again.

  • I have found the Aldi chunky steak pies to be about the best bang for the $.

    • +1

Hard time selling that to a vegetarian/vegan though.

  • +9

    These are actually quite nice.

  • Meat free meat pie.. that's barbaric.

  • +9

420 plant based pie? Will these get me into trouble?

    • +1

Just serve em up and don’t tell anyone.

(Pls let us know the reaction, if any.)

  • -7

Who would have suspected Four'n Twenty would be this woke?

Many tradies will see this and remark "they are dead to me now, I bet the greens are to blame"

    • If there is $ to be made….

    • +2

      Hi Chris Kenny

  • +7

I wasn't a huge fan of this - I think they've tried to go for a flavour a little different to a regular meat pie, and I found myself missing the actual meaty taste. The pies aside, I do think that plant proteins will increase in popularity in general - I've tried the Hungry Jacks / Grill'd burgers and they were amazing / very similar to the real thing

  • +14

    I like them! (I’m vegan).
Good to have in the freezer for a lazy Sunday arvo

  • Ahh the great Australian Taste

  • +14

I'm not sure why there are so many ungrateful people in the comments. Thanks for this deal!

If it isn't for you then you don't have to be snarky, just move along 🤷‍♂️

These pies are great btw 🤤

    • +4

      ppl are scared of change

    • Yawn. It's funny how people complain about vegans 'pushing their agenda', yet on any vegetarian/vegan deal posted you'll find insecure meat-eaters posting the same lame, boring comments attempting to provoke.

      • you'll find insecure meat-eaters

I eat more veg than meat…

        • +1

          Do you want a medal?

          • @kjg: Not really.

            Maybe donate it to charity.

  • +4

I think it’s worth it to try it out instead of full price. As a meat eater I found this tasted very meaty, had a smokey taste and my personal preference if wanting a veggie option next time will be to stick to veggie pasties. My husband also a meat eater liked the taste and said he would prefer this rather than a veg pie/pastie.

    • that smokey soybean taste is just awful. thanks for letting me know

  • For those that have tried this, does it taste alright if you microwave it? I'm too lazy to oven it

    • +5

I normally microwave, then chuck it in the oven for 10 mins to crisp it up. Way better than waiting the half hour or whatever to fully cook it in the oven.

    • +1

I have them for lunch and just microwaved. Wrap them in a paper towel if you have it and they dont go quite as soggy. Still taste fine.

    • +1

Yep, microwave to heat them up.

3 mins in the airfryer and you got that flakey crust and the Great Australian Taste™.

    • +1

I’m too lazy even with an air fryer. Grab a plate, put two wooden takeaway chopsticks on top and then the pie (to elevate it so it doesn’t touch the plate), microwave according to packet or your microwave (for me that’s 3min30secs) and then give it a couple mins to cool down outside of the microwave and you’ll have crispy pastry all round!

      • Microwave and then air fryer for 3 minutes to get the crust crusty

    • Can microwave and just make sure you let the pie stand for 3 minutes or so. I much prefer them in the oven though and with chips and veg as a meal rather than just the pie.

  • +7

I was actually pleasantly surprised by these. Australia are the largest meat consumers per capita in the entire world - can't hurt to sub it out from time to time

  • Vegans vegetarianism is now a cool phase that people feel the need to try

  • +4

These are great, especially when half price.
Most people who snob them off probably haven't even tried them.

A much better alternative to meat pies.. pigs lips and aresholes and anything else swept off the floor, the odd band-aid

    • -2

I'll take all of that so I don't grow soy boobs.

      • +2

That's a myth and has been debunked 1000 times, no truth behind it whatsoever pal.
You're more likely to get man boobs eating chicken and drinking beers.

  • +1

    These are actually pretty decent

  • +8

Yeah, I have to say these are pretty damn good. My wife got me onto them and legit, if you blindfolded me, I'd never have known the difference. 10/10 recommend.

  • I'm a big fan of these and picked up a pack last night. I've always lamented that 'meat pies' (like most vegan sausages that taste like hot wet bread) just tend not to work out when when veganised and these are about as good as it gets. A little nicer than the ones sent to 7/11 which are also decent (just avoid the plant-based sausage rolls because they're dry as old chips).

  • -1

Genuinely the worst frozen pies woolworths sells, wait for something else to be half price and stock up.

  • Have tried them - Pastry is 10/10.. filling is a 5/10.. .. If you are after meat free pies.. the 7-11 ones are way better.

    • I feel like the Woolies ones are almost identical and it's mostly just the poppy seeds that 7-11 doesn't feature (I'm 87% sure that they're also a 4&20 unit).

  • These taste like mushroom pies, probably similar filling to quorns products which is an alternative as tive protein mixture made of from a type of fungi. Texture is more spongy with lest elasticity compared to a meat product so you won't get that mouthful expectation compared to a normal meat pie, however the pie crust is good quality for a frozen product.

  • +1

So meat free but not vegetarian / vegan ?

    • They're vegan as per the general agreement (there's no particular definition of vegan), but they're not marking them vegan, because the manufacturer uses the same production line as non-vegan products. Source: Fussy Vegan.

  • Looks like another post, where it would appear the "vegans" are offended when comments do not "confirm" their beliefs. See most comments with -'ve votes. I'll leave it for others to share possible triggers (e.g. diet related, "SJW", WWF, RSPCA, etc…)

I'm expecting some negs for this comment. Neg away :) or prove me wrong :D.

Meat free pie…. are they paying us $4.75 to eat these?

  • +1

Five mins wrapped in a paper towel in the Microwave. Weekend schneck! Love em.

  • These are pretty good with bio cheese on top, covered with pepper and curry powder inside.

  • +1

I buy these. You could give them to a meat eater and they would not know they are meat free. 8 minutes on quick defrost in the microwave then 3 minutes in the air fryer and it’s like they were just baked.

    • I do the same process

  • Btw the vegan jokes are all old now. How about some original ones?

    And GO!!!……

  • the filling tastes a little weird (but realise taste is subjective) compared to Linda McCartney pies but Linda McCartney pies are $5 for 2. even so it's a good effort from 4+20. I'll buy them at this price but not at full price.

  • Madness 💯 Beef for me.

How anyone could eat one of these is beyond me.
