This one won't do Dolby vision as seen on the iPhone 12. Maybe the new one coming up can do it?

Easily one of the best devices I own and not really invested in Apple products or their ecosystem.

    • How does it compare to the new $99 Chromecast with Android-TV?

      • Apple TV is the best in the market, in pretty certain. Tried way to many devices.

        • +2

          better than Nvidia Shield?

          • @Drpepper666: I guess that one will depend on what you use the device for. I don't own a Shield, I could not see a reason to spend $350, when even gen 1 Apple TV was doing it's job well. I moved to 4k to match the TV screen. I don't play games on Apple TV, although that isn't bad either.

          • +1

@Drpepper666: @Drpepper666 Nvidia Shield is decent for YouTube and Netflix. I mainly use it for that and console emulation. But for all the other apps Apple TV is probably better. Especially since it obviously supports Apple TV+ and Apple Music.

            • @davef: Didn't know Apple TV+ have many movies and TVs..

        • Mate, try NVIDIA Shield Pro first.

          • +2

@darkmattersunB6c0MV: How do you try it without spending $350? One really has to have a very good reason to even try it, when Apple TV can be had for $160. You could not buy it for that kind of money yesterday even used, 2 years old. You probably can't buy it today used for that kind of money either, actually, other than this run out deal. The funny thing is, when all these devices sell, you'll probably be able to sell it for $160 two years from now.

            • @mrau: You have a point in saying that the resell value would be good with Apple. What I am saying is that please don't say it is the best in the market, and you are certain of it without trying the actual better product.
It is like saying that a Mercedes is the best in the market, but I am not trying Lamborghini.

Unless you're locked into Android, need Kodi or Foxtel apps, desperately want HDR on Youtube or prefer a more conventional remote, this blows the Chromecast away…

        • +6

Infuse makes me not even think about Kodi anymore, let alone miss it.

        • -2

          lol wut? How and why?

        • Oh bugger! I already bought, and did not think to ask if Kodi works.
Wasn't there an approved version of Kodi without all the pirate plugins?

Nevermind, it has Plex right? I think that will do the job of playing from my own server.

          • @bargaino: Forget Plex: Infuse

            • +1

@Gradenko: Infuse is shit. Its Plex integration is slow as a one legged dog due to them stupidly reindexing everything locally that Plex has already indexed.

              • @PainToad: Don't integrate with Plex then. It can play straight off your fileserver.

          • +1

@bargaino: Mr MC is the Kodi port on Apple TV. It’s “ok”. I’d recommend Plex.

          • +1

@bargaino: Unless you already have a large Plex library on your server and use Plex Pass features, have you considered Jellyfin at all? The Jellyfin integration in Infuse works very well in my experience. I have Kodi set up on my jailbroken iPad (which I would like to run on the AppleTV but I hear it isn't easy to jailbreak - I have a custom setup with a theme and layout I'm very fond of), but I find Infuse much better for its UI and loading times for stuff on my JF instance.

            • @chihaeru: Thanks folks, I'll check out Infuse and Jellyfin. For now, I still have my old Kodi box.

        • In what ways?

Excellent price, OP. I was considering the $99 Chromecast with Google TV, because the Apple TV was too expensive at RRP for my justification, but this price + the free year of “Apple TV+” makes this really competitive.

Should they announce a new device in November or early 21, it would be easy to sell this one and recoup most of your money. Apple products usually retain a lot of their value, so a change of mind to upgrade wouldn’t be an exceptional penalty.

    • +5

Also got TV+ with my new iPad but don't even bother to look at it, nothing much to watch tbh

      • -1

But some Apple boys swear by the shows 'quality', using the exact same words Apple used in the keynote lol
Ive watched morning wars and its pretty boring, definitely not 'quality '

        • +2

Some other groups of people swear by stuff that's crap as well. Go argue your opinion on imdb or something

        • Actually The stuff is generally a cut above mos streaming services, and that goes for image and sound quailityas well as content. The problem is there is bugger all content, and a lot of it is Very Public Television.
Free with hardware purchase is the right price.

    • +1

Only thing is, the Chromecast+Netflix deal is back in stock, so if you would otherwise have a Netflix subscription then that brings the cost of the Chromecast down to $45 (Apple TV+ notwithstanding)

  • Do I need this if i have a Shield?

    • +5

I think Shield is the 'grail of all streaming devices.

      • Do I need this if I have a Shield TV, 2 Sony Android tvs, one Mi box and an Apple tv 4th Gen? 🤪

Update: got one with 6.5% off gift cards(MyBenefits/Rewardgateway). Thanks OP

    • Why waste your money?

  • +1

Thank you. Free express delivery is a real bonus too.

    • How so?

      • +3

I'm based in Melbourne. Maybe that option is not available in other states.

        • Yeah I did Click and Collect because otherwise it was $6 shipping

  • Great price for a great device! News ones will be much more expensive I suspect, likely a pro model designed for gaming too.

    • -1

It is a great device to watch 4k content the only issue is the remote it’s battery drains fast so have your mobile handy.

      • +3

Can't remember the last time I charged my remote. I use it everyday.

      • +2

Yeah, I think you might have a faulty remote. It can easily last 3+ months with heavy usage and 6 or more with light usage.

  • +3

Running the 1080p one since release. Magnificent box. Just nabbed the 32gig

  • +2

anyone know any good Android TV that are able to sideload apps? Had Apple tv not liking it too much.

    • Vodafone TV is a solid choice, local warranty, antenna input and 4K.

    • +1

My Vodafone TV handles sideloads brilliantly, have installed Kayo and Prime Video

    • I think the new Chromecast has displaced the Voda TV as best recommendation:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/chromecast-with-google-…

      Does it not allow side-loading?

      • +1

It allows side loading, I have the new Google TV and sideloaded PlutoTV and BBC iPlayer. It natively has Amazon Prime Video (so no side loading needed for that).

Plex seems way better on the new Google TV compared to the old VTV, especially if you have Plex Pass and use the Live TV functionality.

        • I tried to side load Foxtel to the new Google Tv but was unsuccessful.

  • JB you have done it again!

  • Anyone able to tell me the difference between one of these and a smart box running android Tv, like a Xiaomi Mi Box S? Wanting to buy one for kids room

    • +6

mate just buy now think later.. can return if u dont like. soon out of stock

    • +1

Apple tvOS vs Android TV. If you are into Apple ecosystem already (iPhone, HomeKit etc etc) this is a good option (Home control, AirPlay, remote control).
Android TV is cheap, customizable, easy to sideload apps but the UI a bit clunky and slow (not Shield though)

      • +1

Thanks appreciate it. I'm already more with the google ecosystem (android, google home speakers, smart plugs) so i might stick with the android tv then. cheers

    • Can't load Kodi on this easily.

      • If you have a Mac its easy, just install Xcode from app store, sign the Kodi IPA and install, if no Mac then yes it is harder.

        • +2

You missed the part where you got to do that every 7 days if you don’t pay the yearly fee for a developer account.

          • @PainToad: Is Reprovision available to resign apps on board?

      • VLC is all you need.

        • Not for what I use Kodi for.

  • +1

    Ordered thanks

  • +1

Bargain! Got a 65Gb in the TV room. Ordered a 32Gb for the bedroom. Thanks OP.

    • +19

glad you got a Extra 1GB on top of normal 64GB version :p

    • +3

When did they start making 65 GB ones? Are they any better than 64 GB ones?

    • +4

Did you get the 65gb one from aliexpress?

  • Anyone know if you get 1 yr Apple TV + if you already had a free year from a Mac purchase? Mine is about to expire And considering buying this if you get extra year.

    • Wondering the same if anyone knows

    • -4

Pity you can’t get kayo on this want to get it for the cricket.

      • I use Kayo on my AppleTV all the time.

      • The Apple TV was the Kayo launch device. The app is designed for Apple TV first.

my free trial just got extended from ending on 1-Nov-2020 to 1-Feb-2021. I don't know why it suddenly changed a few days ago.

I only noticed it yesterday because I was about to cancel the free trial before it charges a monthly subscription.
