8329

Saw this today at Coles.

15% off gift cards including Nintendo eShop, The Kids/Teen/Him/Her/Cinema/Pamper/Pub/Bar/Restaurant gift cards and Google Play gift cards ($50-100 only)
Starting 25/11 ending 1/12

UPDATE: cards not activate or not scanning/discount at checkout. Coles are pulling all cards out and refund. Some people reported some cards are fine. Wait until this is resolved. Such a shame.

UPDATE 2: some people reported that JB-Hifi has lifted the restriction on $500 max Gift card purchases, so you could try your luck. Please buy max 5 cards only and leave them for other people (including me, haha, got none so far) so everyone can have a smiling Black Friday purchases.

PARTY IS OVER. Well done to those who got the cards. Pity to the people who could not get the cards (me too, tried 5 times, gave up, friend gave me few cards). What a good deal with such a shameful operation that left many people frustrated.

      • So they can just keep doing this and we get to use it at fewer and fewer restaurants? That's ridiculous.

        • +6

I'm planning to contact them for clarification and might even take it to ACCC.

The card says any restaurant that accepts eftpos. I'd argue that fastfoods like maccas are a subset of restaurant, so therefore should work.

          • @noone: Yes, appreciate if you could provide an update. A few Asian dine in cafes, previously worked and now don't. Meals are around $15-20. Don't see why they should be excluded.

          • +1

@noone: Yes, lets do this together, we may even be able to take a class action against TCN.

  • +1

My cards were successfully loaded and the status was active till 30 Nov.

They are coming as suspended now. TCN is not contactable via phone.

Does anyone know what's going on? I have sent them email but still awaiting response.

    • Same experience, had to be patient via phone until someone finally picked up. Your other alternative is sending a message via Facebook, after they acknowledge the issue, should be fixed within 24hrs.

    • Was your issue resolved. I still have a couple of my cards as Suspended !

      • No, all cards still showing as suspended.

  • Just tried to exchange 5 x $100 'HIM' Giftcards for a JB HiFi Giftcard, in store, in Melbourne and was rejected. Was advised it is against the T&C's for TCN.

People have said this earlier about updated TCN terms and conditions, but to be honest I'm reading them and I can't see that limitation or the $500 at JB limitation. Can someone point out where that is stated?

    • +4

$500 limitation is lifted but it doesn’t mean the store has to exchange it for JB-Hifi gift card.

  • JB's flip-flopping on the 5 card limit was more annoying than the card activation issue. I ended up refunding all $1500 worth of Him/Her card purchases I made with them and pocketed the $225 gain, and will spend it elsewhere. If they'd not imposed the 5 card limit for those first 2 - 3 days I would have happily spent it all with them.

    • Did you mean you refund exchanged jb gift card or tcn?

  • +2

Digital restaurant cards declined, but physical restaurant cards accepted in the same restaurant since 01/12/2020. I use the digital card in the same restaurant and pay the bill successfully in November. Does anyone know what happened?

    • +1

what type of restaurant is it?

      • sea food, not takeaway and fast food

        • if it is a restaurant i think you have a case of asking TCN for an explanation. They can't just start wiping out places that they don't like as they wish.

          • @shiba: Yes they can under their T&Cs
“At any time we may add or remove participating retailers and/or where the Card may be redeemed and/or add or remove goods or services which may be purchased with the Card.“
            It is allowed under ACCC
            “ Businesses must clearly state:
-all conditions and restrictions on use of the gift card“

            • @wtfnodeal: The headline for the restaurant card was
'Over 10,000 restaurant. That’s right – from 5-star dining to your local favourite, from breakfast to dinner and brunch to dessert. Use this card at any restaurant that accepts eftpos. Now you have the chance to go to any restaurant you ever wanted. The only decision left is where to go!'

And I noticed they have added this new condition now '*Not valid at fast food or quick service restaurants.'

Is it reasonable to advertise any restaurant and then later on add exclusions? What is to stop them from excluding more and more 'participating retailers' down the track when this list was never published in the first place?

It is plain false advertising imo.

              • @shiba: What you said is all included in the T&Cs meaning consumers have accepted them before purchasing the gift cards. Yes they can exclude all the participating restaurants in Australia if they want to. Reasonable or ethical or not is irrelevant because it is part of the T&Cs and ACCC allows it. Do remember that all the restaurants whether on the list or not they don’t have to accept your offer to purchase their services or products regardless of the payment methods. I did mention my past experience in my earlier comment that I put through an online order on JB-Hifi website and paid with JB-HIFI gift card and later it cancelled my order stating it declined to accept my offer. I took it to the Consumer Protection in WA was told it could decline to sell me anything at its discretion regardless of the payment methods and it also meant my gift card may expire before it started to accept my orders but because that was the risks I accepted before purchasing the gift card there was nothing anyone could do about it.

                • @wtfnodeal: Totally different scenarios. JB HiFi's declining to accept your offer means the transaction has not completed and there was no contract formed between JB Hi-Fi and you. However, the transactions between consumers and TCN have completed, and whether the standard terms by TCN are valid needs to be tested.

                  • @sydop: No. There are T&Cs attached to the gift cards and T&Cs attached to the retailers and restaurants etc. I mentioned to Consumer Protection if JB HIFI could decline my offer for any reason meaning my JBHIFI gift cards were going to be worthless plastic cards and they said yeah because you agreed to both the gift card and JBHIFI T&Cs before purchasing their gift cards. The key takeaway is you agree to their T&Cs before making the purchases.

                    • +1

@wtfnodeal: Standard T&C must be fair to be enforced.

I would even test that TCN made false or misleading ads to consumers if challenging the T&C is difficult.

                      "
Over 10,000 restaurant. That’s right – from 5-star dining to your local favourite, from breakfast to dinner and brunch to dessert. *Not valid at fast food or quick service restaurants.
                      "

Such info on the purchage page is obviously misleading. TCN could give list of "over 10,000 restaurants" and I am happy to test them.

                      • -1

@sydop: Yeah? We have a lot fish and chips stores claim themselves number 1 in Western Australia. Are you going to test them too? This is what is extracted from ACCC
“There is one exception to this rule. Sometimes businesses may use wildly exaggerated or vague claims about a product or service that no one could possibly treat seriously or find misleading. For example, a restaurant claims they have the ‘best steaks on earth’. These types of claims are known as ‘puffery’ and are not considered misleading.”

                        • +1

@wtfnodeal: It is ok for you to think that "best" and "10,000" have the same indication to consumers. However, for me "best" is a subjective word while "10,000" is very objective.

It is also good for you to insist that the T & C is working for TCN, but I would fight for my right.

Meaningless to argue this here, I should utilize my time on ACCC.

                          • -1

@sydop: If the fact is only “9,999” does it mean TCN fail the test? You should take it to ACCC instead of wasting time to argue with me. My understanding is if there is a doubt in whether there is misleading info advertised on the retailer’s website the benefit of doubt usually goes to the retailer and ACCC won’t do anything about it but to let you know you have right to take it to the court. Good luck and hope you continue to fight for all Australian consumers.

  • Has anyone managed to get their cards activated that were charged by Coles but Declined by TCN? I was told to open a ticket with Coles support and I have heard nothing.

    • Finally got around to checking the 2x Him and 2x Her cards last night.
      All showed as Active.

      • Been a week, since ticket logged with Coles, no response yet. Will call em tomorrow and chase up. TCN never again !

        • Checked today and balance is good now
And yet response from Coles … We r checking with TCN

      • Have you done anything special to make it work?

  • I got 3 cards suspended for reason. Has anyone with the same problem.

  • So best way to convert these cards to JB Hi-Fi gift cards ASAP is to buy an item and refund straightaway back to store gift card?

  • -1

After reading the recent comments, it appears Jb doesnt accept more than 500$ worth of Tcn cards in one transaction. I have 900$ worth and i am worried now.

Did anyone recently use more than 500$ of cards at the store?

If not, can I convert a physical HIM card to JB GC ?

    • +5

You need to read more. Don’t want to be mean but it’s been widely reported. You can use as many cards as you want but try to go at a quieter time. I have used 21 cards to buy iPhone 12 Pro.

And No, to my knowledge you can’t buy JB gift cards from physical gift card but it’s enforced by stores so some teller might let you do it.

  • +1

I just managed to use my pub and bar card (exchanged to digital mastercard) at maccas self service terminal. That worked when one the first day of the sale then read that it didn't work but for me it still works.
