                • @SueyJitSu: Well it's easier and cheaper than a transplant… and the biggest shame is heat throttling.

                  • @raybies: true - but hopefully after some research and googling… a replacement CPU fan which is plug'n'pray will work just as well.
I don't even own this PC, I just got my mate to buy it since he was looking for one. He says it can run hot to the touch after an hour or so of CyberPunk.

              • @raybies: I would be reluctant to do anything that would make warranty claim difficult. I imagine if you hacked a hole in the side you would have a fight with Dell if you need to claim a repair.

RE that post linked to Dell above with the Noctua NH-U9 refers to a "pancake cooler". This is the standard non-K series cooler, so I want to make sure people aren't confusing the two models - the non-K with pancake cooler vs K-series with fan sandwich cooler. In fact, the "solution" photo looks almost identical to the stock cooler for the K-series.

                https://www.dell.com/community/image/serverpage/image-id/639…

This is the pancake cooler for non-K series
                https://www.dell.com/community/image/serverpage/image-id/640…

                • @lunchbox99: We're talking about the tower cooler w/ a fan in the middle… it's not enough to disipate heat which causes thermal throttling.
I would still try leaving the side panel off… hang a USB fan on the side.

                  • +2

@raybies: Yes there are two fans. A pancake and the tower. This machine has the tower yet under intense CPU load, it still hits 100C. After significant research over the last 24 hours, I am going a Noctua setup as in the picture below (https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8940-Better-…). It appears to easily connect to the fan headers on the board and fits perfectly inside the case. I have already moved the hard drive to the top of the case instead of the front and removed the front hard drive cage to improve airflow. The way the front plastic cover is setup allows for air to come through to the CPU section from below. I will let you know how the fan setup goes when it arrives. Which should be next week some time.

                    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/378415/85489/noctua_co…

                    • @ngcl: What temps are they claiming on the noctua setup? Seems to be fundamentally quite similar to the stock tower cooler, albeit with 2 better fans. I'm wondering if the issue is the case is just hot due to limited airflow - single relatively small rear fan, no top fan, no front fans etc

Still considering just buying a motherboard and mounting into a case I already own. If they didn't have that stupid proprietary front port setup, you could just move it easily.

                      • +1

@lunchbox99: Drops to 60-70's max instead of 100C. It may look the same, but better fans and better cooler. Three heat pipes vs five. It's just a better cooling setup. I guess I will see.

                        • @ngcl: ok, cool (literally)… thanks for the info.

                    • @ngcl: You'll still have the 3070 blowing hot air in to the case and just the punny 90mm fan to disipate all the heat.
Open side panel + fan is a 1 min mod… you could even get a $10 fan hub so you can run all 12v fans from the existing header if you don't like crimping/soldering.

I guess it depends where you've got the PC setup, if the left side is against a wall or object that ocludes the open case then I think it's a no brainer, but if you're looking at the panel it might be aesthetically retrograde.

                    • @ngcl: tryna find the thread where the dude moves the rear exhaust fan down to the front as an intake :)

      • If I keep the casing side panel open, would it help in cooling while gaming?

  • Mine just got delivered, in Sydney, via StarTrack.
ordered it Nov 25, somewhere around #350 or so.
1 day inside what they estimated for delivery.
    Sweet :D

  • Mine delivered too. I ordered that within 30 minutes of deal being posted.

  • Delivered in Sydney

  • Just received this email. My dream had been shattered.
Where is your promise for delivering on 22 Dec.2020?
    Boom ! My Christmas Gift.

    Your order has completed production!

Your order is on schedule and is estimated to arrive by Jan. 06, 2021

We’ve finished customizing your product and are sending it from our factory to our sorting center in Australia. This process can take up 6-8 business days.

View the status of this order online by visiting the Order Details below.

    Thanks for shopping with Dell!

    • I got the email today too but estimated to arrive Jan. 09, 2021 :(

      • Obviously Dell AU sold the merchandise that they did not have in stock. They need to produce then ship from overseas. Given false info for having you on the toe.

        • This happened to me also with the sony xm4 headphones. Purchased on 30th november, estimated delivery 8-10 december. I contacted them when nothing arrived and they said "According to your order record, your order is currently on back order as we currently do not have the Sony WH-1000XM4 in black colour in stock as this item would have been oversold online due to multiple people placing an order at the same time". Another item that I wont be getting before Christmas!

    • Mine completed production yesterday and now due to deliver by 31/12. I suspect it will be early so I wouldn't panic yet. Dell dates are like yoyos. A couple of days ago I had an ETA of 12/01 to 18/01 and under exception management.

      • Yes, you might be right about this.
I had just checked my dellorderno against the website. It shown my package was on delivery 22:00 hours on 16 Dec.2020 which is two days ago. Even better it said the dock is only 25 Kms from me in NSW.
So this meant the production was here in NSW not overseas than originally thought. I could keep finger crossed to receive it before Christmas…to join of all you people who already have received it in recent days. I think God is watching! Cause just recently I had donated $$$ to a family that had a very hard time with their home tragedy. And today gave $$$ to Viva La Dirt team online for their effects in this hard year 2020.

        • Flew in via Malaysian Airlines.

          • @kyle: MH370? I had event information updated, local transportation booked today. Hopefully it comes before holiday starts.

    • Check your order number with StarTrack, I received same email but is says its now arriving tomorrow!

  • Did anyone get a voucher from Dell?

  • Got mine in CBR today… Amazed. Did anyone create a forum post to follow yet? Hows the performance?

  • +2

Mine arrived around 4:30pm today in MEL and already using it. Woohoo!!

    • Awesome, what game are you going to play first?!

      • Lol… Facebook games. Not really using it for gaming, just wanted a fast machine for everyday use.

        • Go for Among Us. Great game for our 3070 :)

        • +2

Way overkill for FB games but you have a great system that you wont need to upgrade for years!

          • @Serpeant: Plus I'm using it for WFH, so $1999 is definitely a good deal.

          • @Serpeant: Well you cant upgrade anything anyway

  • +5

Have had a good, run at it. Played PC VR games, msfs2020 on ultra…

    All running really well.

    It's got a platinum 500w PSU.

    • I'm mighty impressed with this build!!! Quality parts

  • Any one of you lucky guys tried to play cyberpunk 2077 on this system yet?

    • +1

I have my copy sat at home waiting, sadly my machine is in the Melbourne Startrack depot , has been since yesterday morning :(
edit… on board for delivery !

      • Lucky you. Mine still sitting in StarTrack depot in Perth waiting to be picked up and delivered to Adelaide since the 15th. Let us know how it runs. :)

        • Same, still ready for pick up. Looks like we are not able to get it until next Monday. What is wrong with Star Track

          • +1

@applebernie: What is wrong with Star Track… where do you want me to start?
Worst thing about them is that they will 2/5 times load your package for delivery, get you all excited and then not deliver it… and get this, MAKE YOU go to the airport to collect it or wait 2-3 days.

            • @raybies: Me too, still at Perth, waiting for pick up.

Mine too has been waiting in Perth since Tuesday 15/12/20.

I'm hoping that Star Track just doesn't update tracking and that I'll get it tomorrow.

Admittedly, if I get it on Monday 21/12/20, it's still on time.

            • @raybies: I missed the star track delivery and it came the next day. The guy tossed it on the ground when delivering it though. What a douche

      • Arrived this afternoon. Sorry to hear the rest of you are still waiting. Best of luck.

    • +1

cyberpunk 2077 even runs well on my i7 9700 + RTX2070 Dell laptop… I think the game is pretty good too.

    • My mate who ordered this deal got to play a couple of hours of Cyberpunk today. Says it runs really well, glitches and all lol.
Also said it got damn hot though. Hot to the touch. Which may be concerning.

    • It runs Excellent but gets hot after a couple of hours

  • Well Done Startrack!! I'm still waiting for my XPS while based on the tracking information, it says it's been DELIVERED TODAY. Bloody unbelievable. What a bloody shit service.

    • Let's hope it didn't get pinched!

      • Thanks for the quick reply KeRRR. I've just contact StarTrack. They said it's been delivered to a Shopping Centre…(What????) Anyway, got my Case Number, and now 20 mins with Dell Customer Care, while waiting for they checking on my order over the phone, I got hang up by Dell….Totally speechless. That's exactly what I need for the end of bloody 2020 and just before X'mas

        • You are better persuing the case with startrack. It may have been delivered to a business where it can be recovered. Happened to me, got it the next day. Goodluck!

        • How did you go with StarTrack. Hope you got your PC back okay.

          • @Jasperlmk: Haha it’s getting better. Just received a call from Dell customer care this morning said ‘you received your XPS computer, yeah?’ F me

            • @ozself: Unbelievable. They wouldn’t have to call you and ask if they believed you have received it. What does StarTrack say. They must be able find out where exactly they have delivered to?

              • +1

@Jasperlmk: On the StarTrack website, it clearly showed that it’s been delivered and signed by someone else. Call StarTrack 3 times yesterday, they sounded like they didn’t have a fking clue and told me that it seems like my computer had been delivered to a shopping centre based on the GPS information. How could they messed up with residential and commercial address? The other thing is there is NO shopping centre in my suburb anyway….

                • @ozself: StarTrack also faked my delivery. it was signed by some one called Anthony. i phoned to say no it hasn't been delivered. after wasting an hour checking with neighbours

                  they never phoned back.

i phoned Dell the next day, and it was delivered.

                  • @palmplex: Obviously I'm not lucky as you mate. Just called StarTrack again since they told me that they gonna call me back today (of course they didn't). They said they'll put my case into another division (WTF does that mean..) and asked me to raise the issue with the Sender (DELL) and DELL told me to contact StarTrack….LOL you see where I'm going right?….fking hilarious

  • Did you guys with Star Track delivery get status updates?

Latest status update was "Ready for Pickup" in WA on 15/12/20.

I'm just hoping Star Track are too slack for updates and that I'll get it today as KeRRR suggested…

    • Nope, still showing 'Ready for Pickup' in WA

      • What about those who have received it already from Star Track - did they get status updates along the way or just on delivery day?

      • Still ready for pick up in Perth. 28hours drive from Perth to Adelaide. Doesn’t seem like it will be on time for 21st.

    • Same here. I think someone said they got a “out for delivery” notification on the day they received it.

      • +1

I just found I couldn't find the item information on dbschenke anymore…

      • There's a 'Onboard for delivery' notification like the regular Auspost parcels if you've entered the Startrack number into the Auspost app.

  • got my new Dell yesterday,

my download speed is a third what it should be ( 30Mbps instead of 100) and upload is 0.35Mbps instead of 38Mbps. on both wfi and ethernet

Dell are currently troubleshooting. Basic support people have found nothing wrong.

    anyone else?

    • +1

That would be your network or nbn versus the actual pc. You don't always get rated speeds due to congestion in your area at the time of using it.

Check with another system or laptop and run a speed test.

      • Thx, Yes I have multiple PCs and multiple networks ( NBN and mobile networks ) . It's definitely this new Dell PC !!!!

I've also tried a VPN client from the Dell to see if the firewall was interfering, but same problem.

I turned off the PC McAfee firewall but same problem.

        I've reset the network adapter.

        No device driver warnings.

        Any ideas? LOL

    • Mine's using ethernet only, Cat 5 cable (would Cat 6 make any diff?)
      115Mbps Download, 5Mbps Up
      Ockla Speedtest

Stock pc with some light installs
I did uninstall the McAfee and Office apps first thing tho

    • +1

Update on my internet speed issue on Wifi and Ethernet.

The problem was the settings in the Killer Control Center , Under settings

Killer Prioritization Engine is rubbish, so Dell turned it off in the settings. I was told its not compatible with all ISP's . I'm using Optus NBN with DNS4Me for my DNS provider

is this feature just marketing ? Does it actually improve anything? LOL

I never tried these settings myself because it looked like it was just for Wifi and not for Ethernet.

      • Funnily enough I had to disable the "Killer Analytics Service" and "Killer Network Service" on my MSI laptop the other month for the same reasoning. Also made me have constant drop outs on Battlefield V.
All other devices in the house (ipads, phones, and other laptops) all had fine speeds.
My speeds were instantly fixed once I disabled those services.

        • Well Killer is the perfect name then. It kills your connectivity.

      • Cheers for that info

I haven't had any problems on telstra, both wifi and ethernet give me ~115/s download

But I might turn off that Killer feature and do a speed test now

  • got delivered today, still waiting for the monitor.

  • +1

I love this new pc! (I'm not a gamer, coding and daw use here)
Spent a night setting it up
Decided to do a backup of the working state before I installed anything heavy
So I installed Macrium Reflect free version and winged it
8 minute backup of the SSD @ 45GB, could have halved that but chose image verification for safety
YOLO, so then ran an 8 minute restore of the whole SSD
Worked perfectly, I can get back to this semi-new state anytime now.

    • Just curious , doesn't Windows 10 have a built in backup thingy already ? I'm waiting for Dell to fix my speed issue before I backup so this is helpful

      • That feature is deprecated now in Windows AFAIK
Macrium Reflect has a really good rep for reliability over a decade now, easy to get answers and tutorials on it
Plus I tested a backup-and-restore on the XPS8940 and it worked perfectly.

I reported it here as I figured many would be installing clean from scratch
It's nice to have saved working states if you want to clean up later down the line, saves a lot of time

I might even pony up for the pro edition as you can then boot into your backups without doing a reinstall

I used to use Acronis back in the day
they had a few fails as I recall

  • If I keep the casing side panel open, would it help in cooling while gaming?

    • +1

To some extent, but see how it runs first or do a bench test, that way you can just get an aftermarket cooler if necessary.

      • +4

If the PC (repeatedly across several customers) overheats under stress with the case closed then Dell need to fix the fan profiles in the Dell BIOS or otherwise modify the hardware. This would clearly indicate a design fault.

If we bought a new car and it was overheating from new, its not up to us as the customer to put in another radiator or more cooling fans!

        • I'm curious to see some bench results with core temp or another monitoring application on stock. This would give factual results that can be improved upon.

          • +1

@KeRRR: Atm I've hit Max 88 degrees after 100% CPU usage at 4.66ghz for 25 minutes

            • +2

@joshr1pp3r: What was your ambient room Temp at the time of test? I assume you are running stock with turbo enabled? I'll talk to Dell and see about any possible bios updates.

Edit: may make a forum for these discussions, to better keep track of them.

              • @KeRRR: about 20degrees.

Hitting up to 90 degrees now after 40 minutes and dropping clock speed down to 4.2 to 4.4 ghz

              • @KeRRR: Forum would be super useful.

              • @KeRRR: I don't care if it sounds like a Cat 5 Cyclone, as long as it's cool. Surely there's fan control in the BIOS?

            • +1

@joshr1pp3r: To have consistent CPU tests:
              1.- Use Cinebench R23 (https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6709-cinebench.html)
              2.- Use HWInfo 6.40 (https://www.hwinfo.com/download/)
              3.- Screenshot of CPU temp.

Cinebench is a short test ~1min, so if the CPU thermal throttles w/ it, you know there's a problem.
Most people are seeing a throttle even with a 1 min CPU only test.

              Bonus:
4.- Add some GPU heat with FurMark (https://geeks3d.com/furmark/).

            • @ngcl: less than 20C? Gawd it's 31C in Brisbane now.

On handbrake mine got to 94C but averaging 70-90C with clocks between 4.49 - 4.68GHz. Still very quite at all times.

              • @lunchbox99: Yeah, Kinglake Mountain Ranges in Victoria. Just spoke with my sister in Brisbane and we have about a 17 degree difference in apparent temp!

                http://www.3dmark.com/spy/16494806

That's the link to the run I just did now.

              • +1

@lunchbox99: I was playing assassin's Creed max settings for about an hour (room temperature about 29-31©) the gpu was fine under 80 all the time, but the CPU at about 85-90 with peaks of 93..

Even the case was very hot, you couldn't keep your hand for more then 5 seconds.

This is far from ideal, the temperature issues will definitely start after the 12 months warranty if not ealier.

So now I am forced to start looking for some better fans.. Or keeping the case open.

  • Curious what resolution monitor people are pairing with this (office work/games). I don't play first person shooters (stupid motion sickness) so should I go 1440p hi refresh or 4k low refresh?
