Am I crazy to be looking at a 3070/80/90 to upgrade my 2080 Super

    • +22

A 3080 or 3090 might be worth it in ur case not a 3070 really and thats only if ur made of money…

      • +17

Yep, I'd agree with this fella - there isn't much point upgrading from a 2080 Super to a 3070.

    • +1

What game you playing?2080 can't handle?

      • -1

Honestly I already know upgrading unless to a 3090 would probably be just silly. Having a few issues with Cyberpunk but getting mostly 60FPS with most settings maxxed and Ray tracing set to medium on 1440p. Pushing it to 4K seems to drop it right down though. I use the PC secondary to my Series X but it’s slowly getting more and more use lately

          • +4

@zilver: But 1070 has no ray tracing.

            • +1

@aveeno bb: Going from Ray Tracing on Medium to Ray Tracing completely off doesn’t actually bump my FPS much at all, I must say as much as I enjoy the PC side of things looking better when it works well it’s a brain (profanity) sometimes getting it to that point haha

          • +2

@zilver: What settings? I am running gtx 1070 at 1080p medium settings, high textures and I get 40-50 fps . Cpu is Ryzen 5 1600.

          • @zilver: What settings are you running? I can only get 60fps at medium on my 1070.

          • @zilver: yeah maybe with settings set to xbox one level

        • +6

I think Cyberpunks boatload of stability issues have more to do with poor software optimisation rather than hardware, but as everyone else has stated the 3070 is definitely not going to blow your mind -if that is what you were wanting. As most benchmarks suggest, you won't see that much of an improvement until you get into the 3080+ category.

Here is a video from Gamers Nexus specifically about Cyberpunk and video cards. It should help you figure out what you want.

          • @Outsider: Thanks for the tips!

I’ll probably hold off until the next round of video cards for an upgrade, I’m running it on a Ryzen 7 3700X and the 2080 Super. I’m very very green to the PC side of things so overclocking isn’t really something I’ve looked into, but I can’t really complain hitting the 60FPS with most things on max at 1440p is good. I’d just like to be able play on my 65” 4K TV with similar settings as that’s where I play most my single player games

            • @MBix: I was gaming on my on my 4k TV with my 2070S before i got my 3070 last week (ME Andromeda, GTA 5, Squadrons, Jedi Fallen Order) - you should be able to generally get 60fps in most games with occasional dips. You can turn down certain settings to get better frames but generally its mostly playable.

I would seriously suggest giving it a try. Don't dismiss is just because you think you won't get sufficient frame rates. And also, unless you're playing competitive shooters, you don't need insane fps.

              • @bpop99: Yeh I'm definitely happy with hitting around the 60FPS mark for single player games, I think maybe my thought process was if Cyberpunk isn't hitting the mark then future games won't but from everything I'm reading Cyberpunk needs a bit of TLC from the devs to get it optimized better. Will give my 4K TV another whirl over the next few days! Thanks for the tips.

              • @bpop99: On the same boat. I had 2070s before then 3070. Noticeably faster.

            • +1

@MBix: To be honest that is probably the best option.
For Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, the RTX 3070 Founders edition drops below 60 FPS during high loads on "high" settings (not even ultra), and the RTX 3080 and higher cards are scalper priced thanks to all the Australian retailers.
Extra credit to Mwave staff, for rigging the NVIDIA Founders Edition raffle and selling the cards for $2750 on eBay.

If you already have a good working card, especially one that is at the level of a 2080 Super, it's most likely best for you to be patient and wait for the prices to normalise. Hopefully all the bugs and glitches and poor software optimisation on Cyberpunks behalf would be fixed by then too. Future Ti's and Super's are another aspect to look forward to as well.

            • @MBix: i get 55 fps on 1440 p with my 1080 ti - most setting to high - wouldn't buy this crap for above rrp

            • @MBix: How does your 3700X handle games? mine seems to always be at 100% usage. Like cod cold war i get 50-60 fps @ 2k with a 1070, even with the graphics turned right down

              • @damoday: Honestly I'd love to tell you but the PC hasn't yet received enough usage to warrant the purchase (long story short - won a decent gaming laptop, sold it, purchased this) so I really wouldn't be able to tell you how much of a hit the CPU takes in the games I've played on it so far because A: Cyberpunk is the first game I've put any proper hours into on the PC and B: I have no idea how to go about measuring that haha

            • @MBix: DLSS will be your friend; and if you're playing on a TV at couch distances, you're not even going to notice any downsides.

        • +2

I've got a 3090 and I can tell you that it doesn't run it smooth on ultra everything at widescreen 3440x1400. So if you're looking to buy it for that reason, do not.

Don't get me wrong. Can run it awesomely, but it def doesnt run it perfectly. Even with RT off.

          • @Ruddaga: Kidding me? DLSS off though right?
            What’s your CPU ?

            • @BuIIy: 5900 CPU.

Mind you the wide screen is taxing in a different way than 4k. Dlss on all the way. Cruising around the busy parts of the city you see it drop to 60 fps with Ray tracing off.

Like now I'm in a quiet place and it's 100 fps. But I've played 45 hours now so I'm well aware of the games real time performance. Benchmarks etc are probably just from more quiet scenes… If you're flying around in the fastest car, you see the fps take a hit.

        • im currently playing 100fps ultra 1080p on a 2080 super without ray tracing , i dont think its worth sacrificing so many frames for me as i dont notice much different

          • +1

@Understandable: See that to me is impressive, even lowering it to 1080p I still wasn't hitting 80fps. Mind you was before the hot fix patch was released so may be a little better.

            • +1

@MBix: have a look at this video by digital foundry, they went through all the settings and looked for what increased framerate whilst having near no visual impact, for me trying these increased me frames by about 20 without me noticing a graphic difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC25ambD8vs&t

              • @Understandable: What a bunch of …. Downvoting me for sharing my opinion…

                • @zilver: I think it's because you didn't share the settings you used.

On a 1070 paired with a 3700x, using high settings at 1080p, I get 50ish fps for example.

                • @zilver: I did not downvote you ….

    • +4

Performance boost of going from 2080 Super to 3070 is like going from 2080 Super to 2080 Ti.

I would say 3070 is not worth it, 3080 maybe but can't find one, 3090 definitely not for that price unless you are a power user.

    • -5

A 3080 is around 50% faster than a 2080 Super, IMO an upgrade should be closer to 100% faster to really notice a difference.

    • +1

Am I crazy to be looking at a 3070/80/90 to upgrade my 2080 Super

      yes.

I’m keen to wait for for revision of 3070 with more vram. From some benchmarks it seems the card can get vram limited for rt enable modes. Nvidia had plans for higher vram 3070 models and they’ve allegedly scrapped it due to vram supply issues of gddr6x

    • Absolutely.

Skip this generation of cards. With the new consoles out give it a year or so to see the direction things move in then grab something with the next release.

  • +1

    So tempted right now

    • -1

3070 is still not easy to find under $1,000, I would buy now or situation won't get much better.

      • +1

think i'll wait for 3080 ti release to buy

        • In that case your best chance is to get in the queue on the launch night. I lost all hopes of getting 3080 at a decent price anytime soon.

          • @aveeno bb: I'm hopeful that in 6 months time rtx3080 price will come down and be available for me to buy

        • Is there an estimated RRP for the 3080Ti? My wild guess is $2k

          • +7

@Caped Baldy: what does the RRP matter? you live in Australia, you will get reamed for it, RRP means nothing here.

            • @iainmacsoul: Assuming stock levels globally settle by the time 3080 ti is out, I hope that changes. Rumoured Nvidia FE MSRP is $999USD. May equate to roughly $1800 for other branded cards here

  • +1

    Awesome, bought one.
Now off to securing the extra parts.

  • Best price for 3070 I've seen. The only drawback might be that it's a dual-fan model.

I guess for people with a smaller case it might actually work out better.

    • +4

The fans can get a little noisy - but performance wise you're not really missing anything much.

This is the OC model but I just used afterburner to OC the power limit by the max 10% and basically get the same performance as a higher priced 3070.

There isn't really a justification to pay more given that at this price its still already inflated from the USD499 RRP announced by Nvidia (even after accounting for GST)

  • Got one this morning, it said sold out until now.

  • +1

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/9775509/redir People from previous deal arent even getting stock until next week

    • Awww don't tell me that, I was counting on getting it by Friday.

    • May be they just got delivered a big batch of 200 or so.

      • Order updated, they responded to a question regarding me adding insurance to the order.

"Hi , your order already schedule for dispatch tomorrow, unfortunately too late to make any changes. We will notify you the tracking detail once your order dispatched."

    • +3

I got mine on Saturday, I asked Scorptec to cancel my order (after being told stock wouldn't come in until the 23/12) and magically they found some stock to send me one.

Either they had a batch come in or they bumped somebody else's order to get mine done.

Still took two weeks to get an 'in stock' item using express shipping, so keep that in mind if you want it this side of Christmas.

    • I was one of these - cancelled my order and still waiting for my refund to clear. This experience has completely shattered my trust in Scorptec.

    • Mine just shipped 👍

  • Oz I know that this is still above the original RRP for this product but its the current best price.com doesn't have the same ring to it

  • Lets me add 51 in cart. Looks like about 50 left now.

    • It is slowly dropping, it is fun to watch.

  • OP, might want to add + Delivery

    • Thanks - missed that out

  • My gtx980ti is really struggling right now, (lowest settings for AC Valhalla, planning to play cyberpunk next), would this be a bargain purchase or should I still wait for the price to come down to its MSRP?

    • -1

I also have 980Ti but have Xbox series x and PS5 so not in a rush but will deffo build another PC with a 3080 in it for 4k gaming. Not gonna bite the bullet with these inferior cards but it's up to you.

      • Ehh, my monitors aren't 4k, but might a while to see if they (3070 or 3080) are going to drop further during boxing day or something.

      • Lucky man!

    • I upgraded from a 970 to a 3070 and the jump was definately worth it.

  • +3

Waiting for Boxing Day to get a better model . If you use eBay discounted gift card plus the eBay 20% off sales (hopefully they are going to run another one on Boxing Day), you should be able to get a better 3 fans card for $900

    • +1 for this. Stocks for 3070 are definitely available and will only improve over time.

  • This is a nice looking card by this generations standard. So many ugly designs this year.

  • +1

I'd be waiting for some GPUs with higher VRAM. It's been rumoured 16GB or 20GB models are coming out.

    • Just to note, you don't really need more unless you're gaming on 4k.

I've been gaming on 4k since I received this card last week, and basically most games i play take up 4 - 7k GB of VRAM in 4k (haven't tried Cyberpunk though). For anything below 4k, I'm sure its going to be the next GPU cycle before you get beyond that amount.

      • +1

I think the main issue is the longevity you will get out of 8gb cards, with the new consoles having 16gb of shared memory.

Their split of gpu to cpu allocated memory is going to trend towards 10-12g for the gpu, and 4-6 for the o/s and cpu.

So it probably won't be more than a year or 2 until your always hitting the 8gb limit for the pc cards running most console ported games.

This may be sufficient time gained from a card to make it worth it. But it is still a limitation to take in mind if you normally hold onto a card for more than 2 years each time.

      • +1

Or gaming in VR, which is becoming a thing.

        … Commenting for a friend.

  • +1

Thanks ordered, hopefully it'll be a massive upgrade from my 970 for close to $1000 delivered - yikes

    • How much are you paying for the delivery?

      • $12

        • +1

          Should have said $900*

    • +1

970? It's totally different league. You will be impressed.

      • I got a 3060ti last week to upgrade from my 970strix and it's a big leap. DLSS is excellent so hopefully more games will support it.

Control, Cyberpunk and VR (Quest 2 VD link) are great right now.

        • Nice, ever since I've got my 3070 recently, I tend to play more recent games because it's so enjoyable to play these games.

Playing Cyberpunk and AC Valhalla, and occasionally Flight Simulator.

        • I have the same 970 as you, and I keep looking at which card I should jump on now, or wait for after Christmas. If only more of the Founders Edition cards were coming.

        • Should also say I got the dirtiest cheapest Galax first batch ($739 from CPL) and it overclocks pretty well. I'm peaking at just over 1710MHz GPU vid clock with the One touch OC, and sustainable. (Using AIO CPU cooler so my box is probably quite cool).
Haven't played for hours on end mind you, but didn't break a sweat with Cyberpunk. I'm running 1200p FYI however, so somewhere between 1080 and 1440.

          • @Thiefsie: Nice. Yeah, I'm at 2560x1080 with an ultrawide so somewhat similar. That's good to know about some real-world usage, thanks for sharing.

  • +2

Shopping express might do 3070s for $849 again for boxing day if:
    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/Vote-Boxing-Day-Price
Gets enough votes (scroll to the bottom)

  • Hey it's not out of stock… Yet

  • Relatively a good price for the current market. You can get two of these for the price of some 3080s.
On the other hand the RRP for 3070s is USD $499 = AUD $660.
I think I can wait a little longer.

    • +6

Yea but the aussie msrp is $809 which sucks…

    • Don’t forget in the US MSRRP excludes sales tax, which we included

      • +1

True but $660+GST is still only $726.
Although, I don't think many people in the US are really getting them for $500USD anyway. It's inflated everywhere.

        • Amen.
Supply and demand. Or “” and demand

  • +3

I got a 1070 but I am playing cyberpunk and its running well. I have no complaints. Prob wait until the 4070

    • +1

Yep cyberpunk made me realise I absolutely dont NEED an upgrade unless i want RTX/DLSS, especially at this price. If I can get a 3060ti at 650? Sure. But I dont need to spent 850 yet, no games need that yet (games I want to play anyway).

      • +1

Same reason for me too! I don't "need" an upgrade. Unless I really want RTX/DLSS as you said. :) And even then, it's not a game changer for me. I can wait.

        • Exactly. I honestly expected the game to be more taxing at 1440p but with fidelity fx it runs fine. The improvement ill see from a 3070 is not at all worth the price, especially for a "lower tier" model.

    • What settings are you running? I can only get 60fps at medium on my 1070.

      • Start with everything to medium. At 1080p that alone should be fine, maybe using dynamic fidelity fx to set min fps to 60 with min res at 90% will help, but for me at 1440p i run medium @ 60fps with fidelity fx at min res 80%.

      • +1

        My computer is: AMD 5800x, 32gb ram, SSD, 1070. Ultrawide @ 2560×1080p 144hz

On ultra, film grain off, motion blur low. I am getting an average of 35. Didn't test out when I am in a huge battle.
On medium I am getting around 55

        • I think your 1070 and monitor are "bottlenecks" in your system.

  • This should be a good upgrade to my 5700XT, at least with DLSS and smooth ray tracing.
Would’ve preferred a 3080, but hey what’s the point waiting around for never

    • You basically went from a 2070 super to a 2080 ti. Is it worth it?
