    How is the screen?

    • +6

      bad as usual

    • +3

Good if you don't use it much. Mine's normally connected to 2x monitors via USB C dock.

  • +4

come here for the screen comments…

    • I bought the same laptop from Lenovo delivered to me at end of December, with the same specs + a 300 nit touch screen and MX450 graphic card. I also added office 2019 CD key. Fantastic laptop! The only problem for me is that it doesn’t run sketch up 8(a really old 2010 version) properly, maybe the graphics card is too good for it…….. looking to buy and try a new laptop, if anyone want to buy my laptop, please PM me, I have receipt and box still. :)

      • Did you end up finding a good laptop for Sketch-up?

  • 100 nits

    • +3

      250 Nits…

      • 250 not bad like HP Probook

        • +1

Two bads don't make a good.

          • @mrtee: Still better than 100, just startup a HP Probook G8 today according to spec it is 250nits, it is actually quite OK of course not as good as a desktop 2k IPS screen.

  • Battery life?

    • +7

      Yes it has one

  • Which dock does this work with?

    • +1

Uses USB-C so it should be with any dock that's USB-C.

      • Both Lenovo docks work well. Gen 2 USB C or Hybrid.

  • It is a 250 nits display, not enough.

I recently bought two Lenovo laptops last month (back to school offers were pretty decent).

    • One is a 15.6 inch 500 nits HDR screen, pretty amazing.
    • The other is a 14 inch 300 nits screen, just enough I think, I would not go for less brightness.
    • +1

      Prices of these Laptops?

    • +2

200 nits is the standard minimum for an indoor monitor

I have a 400 nit laptop which I often hook up to 2x 200 nit screens for work. You do notice the difference, but I really don't see it as an issue. The laptop screen is amazing, combined with the touch screen you almost forget it's even an electronic device at times, but the screens aren't really an issue at all. I hook up to the screens and have no real issues though - it's not at all problematic… Doesn't have as much wow factor to it, ie a 200 nit screen is not at all impressive, but there's no real issues.

Basically, the 400 nits is a cool thrill for a pricey laptop… But I really don't miss it much, even after an 8 hour day on 200 nit screens.

      tl;dr:
This is a $900 laptop lol 250 nits is very much enough for a generic no thrills laptop… It's not like this is some 13" 2-in-1 you'll use outside…

      • the brightness probably also impacts battery life and a selling point of laptops is run time …so bigger battery or less nits for same run time.

        • Most state "up-to" these days, which we all know that's with lowest brightness settings lol

  • +23

Stop whinging about the screen. It's such a non issue for the average user if you're in a normal office/home environment. I bought 10 of these E15's last year (albeit 10th gen i5 not 11) for our office staff needing to WFH when covid struck and as the office IT guy I can vouch they have been great to work with. Performance to price ratio is very good, plus with Shopback you can get 6% back. Lenovo support have been great for issues with other devices. 8 months in and it's been smooth sailing.

    • Thinkpad A, E & L Series
      2.50%

It's not 6% at Shopback and don't forget that very very important line in italics at the bottom of the post ;)

      • Apologies, when I ordered it it Shopback must've been doing a promo. Didn't check this time around.

    • I've been a sysadmin for large departments. I wouldn't use a 250 nit screen myself, and wouldn't recommend it for "average users", nor anyone else.

      • +10

yeah, because the sysadmin spend most of his time on 4k 144hz on FPS game.

        • More like crafting iiiiiiitttttttttttt memes on users, brands and competitors. Or maybe that's just me?

        • -2

I've only ever used what everyone else uses.

          From notebookcheck review (AMD version):
"However, the screen brightness is very low. 250 cd/m² is often not enough in very bright rooms."

I daily drive this laptop. Between the solid tactile keyboard & trackpad, good I/O (yes 2-3 usb a ports, plus type c for dock) and consistent performance I think it's a good deal for the price. Sure the screen isn't that 'bright' but its perfectly fine staring at spreadsheets and visual studio all day.

    • +1

Not so fussed about the screen - but what are some other possible cons?

      • +2

Webcam isnt great. Can definitely tell the diff between this (720p) and something like on a Surface device (1080p). It's fine though for zoom and teams internally I guess. Won't wanna be doing any super important/critical business conferencing with it.

It's thin but definitely not ultra light.

Battery is okay - nothing amazing. If you push it hard you might get 4-5 hours.

Plus it's a fingerprint magnet. But only noticable if you're really looking.

GPU lacks so don't expect to be doing any gaming.

        • +1

I can definitely deal with those cons - cheers for the reply and the post!

        • Any pros that you might care to list??! lol

          Just kidding.

…or am I. A laptop with a 4 or 5 hour battery life, average screen, not light to carry, almost $1,000.

Clearly there are some benefits to this brand (durabiltiy, longevity) that are mentioned frequently. It would be good if the vendors could expand a little on these benefits…. they might get more sales that way (i.e. from me? haha).

          • @clandestino: Haha it does indeed sound like ive discounted this laptop bigtime with those all of those cons.

For my primary use case productivity ie excel, ton of chrome tabs, coding and sys admin stuff this device shines - mostly because of its performance. It all really depends on what your requirements as a user are.

Im plugged in almost all of the day, so 4-5 hours is plentiful for me when i need to duck out, plus i only take it home a few days a week (the laptop mainly sits on my desk nowhere near windows or bright natural light, connected to to a dock) My use of laptops probably varies to the average ozb joe. If you travel or are on the go and need something quite portable and with 10+ hours battery usable outside in the sun (admittedly the E15 doesn't do those things amazingly) definitely look elsewhere.

For $920 (inclusive of the 3.5% cashrewards and shipping included) for this level of performance, storage and 16gb ram (steer clear from 8gb) plus its other pro's (killer keyboard, build quality) its a good value device for me.

Hope you find what youre looking for and at a bargain price!

    • What kind of a freak does actual work on their laptop screen anyway.

      • +1

Bingo! Maybe 1% of the week it's undocked and taken outside or into a meeting. Other 99% usb c dual monitor that shit.

    • +1

that's right peeps, stop whinging just rip off the screen and then HDMI all the way problem solved!
no one buys laptop because of the screen it's all about te chip, the ram and the SSD who cares if it was a blurry screen?

      • -1

        ;)

      • Maybe get a NUC for much less than? Recently got an i5/64GB/1TB nvme for just over $850.

    • +2

I got a Lenovo L380 from last deal with 250nits screen. Its fine to work on in a dark room but I struggled to use it indoor in a well lit room when it was sunny outside. Had to change my seat in the library to a shaded space to work. IMO Its not a big deal if you are happy to put up with this flaw as most of the time I don't use full brightness anyway. But for my next laptop I would go for something a it brighter for convenienceof having it if I need. .

    • +1

      Average user here.
I too once though it was good enough… until it wasn't.

If you happen to have the conditions to suit the screen, or engineer the conditions to suit the screen then it's ok, but in the real word it's not.

Using near a window with indirect outside ambient light on an overcast day i experienced what people were complain about for the first time.
It's really isn't good enough, and would be such an easy fix.

Still love my E series, but let there be no mistake, this is an issue.

    • But its not just about brightness, what about colour?

Last I checked, typical office workers don't look at high quality images and videos on social media, nor stream videos for hours most nights. When doing this, having not just decent brightness, but IMO more importantly decent colour gamut is a must. 45% NTSC is literally 1/3 of the way to pure grey scale (black and white) from your typical budget monitor or TV (the baseline everyone has been used to for well over a decade) with 72% NTSC / 100% sRGB.

As for brightness, if you have a window behind you and you don't want to sit in the dark with a light running all day whilst you work, then RIP your eyeballs straining to see anything on a dimly lit screen. I have my 300 nit work laptop screen set to 95% brightness, to match my work monitors set to 50% (default), which is neither dim nor bright with the blinds halfway down next to me.

      • No one in their right mind would buy this laptop for extensive media consumption or professional video/photo editing. That's like buying a 4wd and expecting it to give you a thrill around corners. It's just not built for that purpose.

Sure you can still flog your big 4wd around a bend here and there and it will get the job done, but it's no rwd sports car. Using this laptop daily, the colour is perfectly fine even when viewing photos and videos. Wouldn't even know it's subpar unless a professional whose tuned in editing media explained why.

Brightness is a fair point. Wouldn't sit anywhere near a window with natural light on this screen.

        • OP said perfectly fine for home use. At home, people spend most of their time on digital devices consuming media.

If you can't immediately spot a 45% NTSC screen then you must be partially colourblind. Again, its 1/3 of the way to black and white from your typical budget TV or monitor from 10 years ago.

I'm not comparing it to professional grade colour gamut (say 100% NTSC / 130% sRGB), so your analogy is flawed. This is like cornering in a 4WD vs. a standard run of the mill hatchback or SUV (that's what 72% NTSC is).

  • This or the Redmi 16" notebook? Aside from the webcam and backlit keyboard

  • This or ryzen?

  • $4 less than the .edu site price - nice.

Hi mate any deal on an i7 please?

  • +5

I am surprised the code isn't THINKARSE

Lenovo is a bit more conservative I guess

    • +1

at this stage I think it would be appropriate for Lenovo to rename this model ARSEBOOK and be done with it

majority of its sales were from TA posts exclusively

  • This thinkpad, or the dell inspiron deal ?https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/602943

    • Unless you prefer the Ryzen this is a good price given it comes with 16 GB Ram and decent built quality.

Can't believe the negativity around the screen

250nits screen is perfect, if you plan to work in a dark room with no light… Or under a bridge over a river where you don't get much sunlight.

    • Really? I find it horrible to work with my work laptop which has 250 nits screen. Currently using Yoga 7i 15 which is rated at 500 nits and the difference is night and day

  • +1

Was just discussing with workmates how bad our ThinkPads are if you want to use them as laptops. Screen brightness aside:

    • the hinges are terrible; screen flops open and shut if you're in a moving vehicle
    • the trackpad is the worst I've used: mouse jumps all over the place, clicking random things (same for a colleague). Turned the sensitivity wayyy down to the point that it's unusable

Thankfully, mine spends 90% of its life docked because it's infuriating to try and use for its intended purpose.

    • Which models do you have, just for reference?

      • T580's in the small group I was having a whinge with :)
