1780

Send free text and picture messages, plus get a FREE real phone number on the Web at pinger.com/textfree.

Other platforms like phone don't seem to work since you need to be in the US store and the company told me they will try and make it global soon. Maybe Android will work. Please confirm.

MOD EDIT - Always free, and software so could come under the standard we apply to apps which means it belongs in forums. However it also includes free SMS and US phone number which is permissible. No further reports or comments necessary - Thanks

Just signed up, seems to work, sent myself a message.

Now it's time to send other people texts. :P

Also if you want to seek revenge on someone you can flood them.

      • Especially when using a PC keyboard…. Muhahahahah

        • If you flood it, it tells you to slow down after 8 texts in 5 seconds. :(

        • And how did you come to know this?

    • doesn't work for me says: 'Textfree currently only supports texting to phone numbers in selected countries. We're working on supporting more countries soon.'

  • Sent myself one too, worked very quickly — what I'd expect if i sent it from another mobile here.

  • +1

I just wonder how long this will last though. Nice find btw

    • I've been using pinger's service for about 2 years now so I'd assume they are going to stick around. I have it on my iphone here but it's possible I was only able to buy it because I have a US itunes account as well. It works well but they do send you messages about their other apps and promotions they are running. It's a annoying but worth it to text my friends back home for free.

      • "buy it because I have a US itunes account as well."

That is correct. It seems it works for all Androids though.

        • It DIDN't work on a mate's Symbian-based Nokia handset,
even via Opera… 'seems to need a new[er] ver of Flash

      • It works well but they do send you messages about their other apps and promotions they are running.

Are the messages sent to the pinger number or all the mobile numbers you've text to?

        • +1

They go both ways nfr. And to email accounts. So its an SMS and Email service in one. Your email is [email protected]

        • tommy I was asking where the spam messages are sent to.

        • To your mobile only

  • +1

    great! working so far.

  • How do you send sms to australian numbers? What international dialing code is required.

    • +1

      If mobile is 0412 342 162
      then enter this
      61412342162

      • +34

        Hey thats my number!

      • +1

        enter this +61412342162

    • +1

To text outside the US, start with +country code, then area code, then the number, eg oz mobile: +614xxxxxxxx

  • +1

Don't see what's the US number for if we can't receive on it ?, other wise works fast as I sent one for myself and shows the US number (good number I must admit)

    • I can send and receive no problems with the US number it gives.

    • Seems to work like texting in Skype… SMS replies are interleaved with your outgoing SMS's.

  • +13

what did people put in for the zip code?
screw it. just put in 90210

    • +2

hahaha that's exactly what I did ;) You sure your name isn't 'Branden?'

      • +3

        i put 12345, i;m doing it wrong, aren't i?

      • LOL me too :D

    • +2

Hahahah that's the one I always use. Ahhh the good old days hanging out in the Peach Pit… not.

  • did any one know whats that usa phone number for? i called that number but seems no one pick up the phone

    • +10

That's cause you were on the line :D

      • i am using skype lol

  • +2

    Must….not…use…to..spam…telemarketers….

  • There is no charge for the recipient is there?

    • neg

  • not bad! has ios and android app too

  • +2

    Yep works well.

Wonder whats in it for the company… why go to the trouble of offering this - wheres the payola for them?

    • +1

Maybe it's run by the Underpants Gnomes?

    • There is adverts on the web version from what I can see. Also there may be ads on the other platforms. Since the US have plans with unlimited global texting it's possible that they can still make a profit.

      • Get AdBlock. I haven't seen an add in ages after getting this chrome extension.

        • I support sites with non-obtrusive ads and whitelist good services.

  • When I try and sign up I get "we're so sorry. The Textfree servers are unavailable right now. We're working hard to make them available ASAP."

    EDIT:
This only happened when using Opera, tried with Chrome and it worked.

  • Thanks OP, I'm Pingin!!

So far have sent sms to Norway and NZ, and they have both worked

    • fyi, picture messages will only work if you send them to USA numbers

  • thanks OP!

  • +1

It seems there has to be a catch - in six months time they're not going to suddenly spam every single number you've sent to, with premium services they don't want are they?

  • +2

If I was to reply to the text message, would I be charged an international sms?

    • +2

Fair question. Who ever neg'd, do you have an answer?

    • yes you will
      from pinger website
"Do we get charged international fees?

It's free for you (the Textfree user). However, standard messaging rates apply for the people you are texting. Because Textfree gives you a US phone number, your friends abroad will incur international fees!"

  • +3

Android app works like a charm. Go to http://www.pinger.com/goto/apk

    • doesn't for me - after logging into the app the main page just keeps refreshing

  • Hi What is the meanining of ZIP code?? (just joined to the site)

    • +1

      Post code

    • zipcode just lets you choose your US numbers' prefix
Eg. 93036 (Semi Calif) is (805)…
90210 may be 242… or some other

US/Can mobiles use same number sceme as their landlines, unlike Euro/Asia with separate number prefixes.

      HTH

      • +1

Do you know what zipcode will give me a prefix of 555? Would love to have a phone number like in all the Hollywood movies. :)

        • -1

From memory the prefix 555 is used for directory assistance. In some us states any number beginning with 555 gets directory assistance, other states a specific number like 555212 is used.

Anyway I'm going fishing for a better number like (911)xxxx. etc when I have time.

        • I dont think you'll be able to use a 911 number
          http://www.areacodelocations.info/9/

        • +5

555 is reserved for TVs & movies. No real US telephone number will ever start with 555.

        • Living in Moorabbin, VIC will give you a prefix of 555 :o)

  • how is pinger different to whatsapp? im kinda curious, signed up for it anyway

    • What's app will allow you to text to other whatsapp users. Pinger will allow you to text to anyone and they will be able to text you at an actual phone number. There are several services that do this and most are free.

    • +1

whats app is not an sms.

it's more like an email. sent thru data.

and yeah, only whats app to whats app.

  • Can others reply to your text?
What's the point if you can't use your own number as the sender?

Edit: Oh, I see. It has like an inbox for replies.

    • +2

As someone's already mentioned, send and receive works, but you must log in for both afaik.

I think http://www.yakedi.com is worth a look as your real mobile number is sent in your free sms, cons: limit of x3 sms p/day and Aust/NZ only.

http://www.youtxt.com provides x10 free international sms.

I hope they can sustain the 'unlimited' thing. 20 p/day might be better.

      • I reckon they can sustain it since they have ads and they have been going for some time.

      • youtxt i find annoying because they advertise directly in the message. It makes me look like a cheapskate infront of my friends.

        • +3

Your friends need to see the real you sooner or later. You're posting on Ozbargain sunshine!

  • This is good stuff. Great find. Hope this will last a long time.

  • thanks OP

    • +2

You are right smnfrstr. It's always been free, so not sure it belongs on OzB, but it seems many people are discovering it now so I guess it's a good thing

    • +1

Doesn't make it a bad deal for you to neg it. At worst it just means it should be moved to the forums. Use the report button if you believe that's the case.

    • +8

Might have always been free but i would not have found it if not for this deal.

Thanks OP you rock my universe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Except if people don't know about it, it's worth posting. What a waste of a neg.

      • -3

I could say the same for you. What a waste of a +. If its always been free and available, why is is a bargain?

        • +2

Did you tell us about it? Deals or GTFO!

  • Awesome thanks :)

  • -1

Does it cost replier's international rates?

    • I think it must do.

    • Yes, but that's like anything. Your friend can also sign up to pinger and easily reply from the web and other platforms.

      • -1

        What about my "other" friend?

  • +2

Awesome! Just moved to the US and it works to send free text to Australia and Germany! Thanks so much!

  • GR8 find thnx

  • +1

You need to register a US itunes account to install the Pinger app which is called "Textfree voice + VM".. Tested and works really fast! Very impressive. Thanks

  • +1

This looks even better then JaxtrSMS. (JaxtrSMS uses phone number, receiver dont need app like this, but getting US Free # is great with this)

For android, the official app is available for outside USA from pinger site (http://pinger.com/content/android-int.html) - direct apk link is : http://pinger.com/goto/apk.

    • +1

      i just used Market Enabler

  • hmmm…. it doesn't want to work for me…… I can receive… but not send for some reason… neither from pc or from android…..

    halfway there I guess :)

    • +1

Same here Andy. Maybe they've just become massively inundated by members living in Beverly Hills..

      • +1

Works fine for me, just type +61XXXXXXXXX into the box.
        Remember the +!

You can also change the signature so you don't look like a cheapo, or to provide a number for reply.

        • -1

Thats the one. "+614NNNNNNNN" there is no '0' as the first digit for the mobile number. The + sign is req'd.

        • yep… done all that… still no go :(

        • yeah I've just changed it to 'sent from my android'. Nice and generic.

and yes, 90210. Gotta love it.

      • maybe a carrier issue?

    • Not working for me either, I'm with tpg using their web interface.

  • So, Brains-Trust…

How to get the OTHER offered "free" service, ie, Free TALK…?

  • +2

Viber is my favorite of these services.

    http://www.viber.com/

Talk, text and pictures worldwide for free.
Both parties need the Viber app on iPhone or android. Thats all.

Like Skype on mobile but way better.

    • -1

      Nvm, Viber is VOIP… lol.

      • So is Skype, so what?
What else do you want for free with your lol?
Used it to call people in Europe for so many hours this year, sent heaps of photos whenever the mood took and ship loads of sms, all for the Ozbargain favorite price of free.
The reason I like it is it integrates into you Android device (or ithingy) seamlessly. No learning curve, no usage limits.

    • +1 for Viber.

It's easy, and it works really really well.
Made so many free calls right from my mobile while my sister has been in France.
