Good deal. I probably give a slight edge to this one below only because you get the same number of points but you don't need to wait another year (incurring another year of annual fee) to get the full amount. With the $200 cashback also, annual fee is $225. A little higher than the $195 here but since you don't need to wait until the 1 year anniversary to get the last of the points, may be a better deal for some

    • +2

      agreed

      • +4

On the phone? Just send the a secure message via ANZ Internet banking the minute you want to cancel the card. That’s all it takes.

        • -4

Tried that, was told we had to call.
They said they cancelled the card & would send a final bill, but they didn't.

After finally agreeing to cancel the card, they added the annual fee and told me to login to get my final balance, but of course they'd cancelled my login. A few more hours & days of back & forth finally got the final bill, with the annual fee & interest..So more calls..

TLDR: painful, time consuming process. If i did it again, I'd start by putting a freeze on the card after 11mths, move to a new card, pay off the amount owing, then cancel.

          • +7

@M00Cow: there's a cancel card button in the portal.
I've cancelled many anz cards and never had to call.

            • +6

@bohn: I believe one of the things to come out of the banking royal commission was that you had to be able to cancel cards online.

              • -1

@snb9211: yes that's true, but despite that, there has been one card that I have been unable to close online. Can't remember which one it was now, perhaps Virgin?
                Not sure.

              • @snb9211: even shittybank has a cancel online option.

every bank must provide an online way to cancel.

          • +1

@M00Cow: Not sure what you did but my experience was painless, asked to cancel card online and 2 days later it was done.

Only had the card for 4 months as well

          • @M00Cow: Wow… how funny. You poor bugger, you put yourself through all that when there is a simple cancel card option in your internet banking.

            • @sidoz: When i tried that, it said I had to call.

      • +1

I just jump online make sure the balance is zero on the card then cancel it.

        • +1

Yeah that's what I did too. Did that yesterday, in fact, and was told I could cut up my card within minutes.

    • +14

Just a heads up NAB is pretty much the only company to prorata your annual fee (at least last time i was with them) so you'll get a large proportion refunded if you cancel prior to the first year.

      • Would this apply to the first year ?

        • +5

          Did for me
Not sure why i got negged though
          The wonders of ozbargain

          • @Drakesy: Question. How do you cancel in the first year when this deal requires you to hold for 12 months?

Perhaps you're talking about other nab credit cards?

            • @DevlicK: Get your 100,000 points in the first 3 months
              Then cancel
              Simples
No value in holding it for a year to get another 25,000 points and pay the annual fee

              • @Drakesy: I see, so the requirement to hold it for 12 months is only for the extra 25,000 points and not for the initial 100,000 points?

I read it as though you needed to hold it for 12 months for the 100,000 points too.

                • +1

                  @DevlicK: Yeah,
                  I dont blame you
The wording is a bit confusing
But once you have your 100k points they cant take it off you

      • +1

Think AMEX does this too. At least they did for me when I cancelled my Qantas Ultimate earlier this year.

      • +1

Yep. I broke my record with this card and had it open for less than a month and actually got a full refund.

Also got a full refund with St George even though I had that card for 6 months.

Qantas Money gave me pro rata refund also.

        • I guess the only thing to be careful of is the banks (their algorithm) could see your credit history of opening and closing cards in a short time frame, and reject a future application (ie. nothing in it for them)

          • +6

@tunzafun001: 35+ credit cards (just about one every year for pretty much every bank) would suggest that they don't really care.

            • +2

@endolphin: Yep agreed, done right and credit card churning barely affects your credit score (this is after 6+ cards a year for the past 4 years)

              • @Drakesy: I generally stick to 4 a year, but can also confirm minimum impact: excellent to very good across all score providers for years now.

        • Doesn't this card require you to hold for 12 months?

      • Curious how this works? If you cancel the card, where do they pay the refund? Normally when you cancel the card you need a $0 balance, so where does the pro rata refund go?

        • They call/email you and you elect a bank account for it to go into

        • +1

nah you dont need a $0 balance to close the card, you can close it while still carrying a balance and they'll continue sending you statements until you pay it off fully.

      • Yep, did the same for me, i was bloody surprised thats for sure.

    • -4

ANZ very much don't like card flippers though. You very often hear of people getting knocked back simply for looking like a card flipper, despite high credit rating + stable income.

      • +2

I've flipping between ANZ Qantas & Reward every year for the last 3-4 years or so. But i keep the card for at least 6-10 months.
        Never have any issue.

        • Keeping for 6-10 months could well make the difference

In my case I was accepted for $6k card with ~40k income and ~600 credit score. Cancelled after 4 months when I got the points. Next year got knocked back for $6k limit while earning ~80k and ~840 credit score lol… Only difference was most of my credit history is flipping cards every 3-4 months.

          • @[Deactivated]: I cancel my anz cards after 3 months and have been doing this every year.

Never been knocked back by anz
            Citibank though
They used to be known for knocking people back

            • +1

@Drakesy: Citibank are another one that seem to yeah

The 3 brandings of BOM (St George and something else), NAB and AMEX I've not had any issues with though

ANZ never formally denied my application but instead sent me in circles for months. Stupid requests like ALL payslips for the last 3 months, then 6 months, then no response for weeks after I provide them… They also wanted a full detailed statement of my share portfolio and savings accounts… Provided all requested info and still got sent in circles. All the other banks mentioned were fine with 2-4 payslips, with no other evidence required.

It could be the case that maybe you have an account ANZ can see already or something like that, dunno… But last two times I tried with them it was an absolute mission of getting all the documented they wanted only to hear nothing for ages.

              • @[Deactivated]: Same for me. A wasted credit check.

              • @[Deactivated]: I'm the opposite with Citibank. My CC applications were approved very quick - usually within 48hrs. I can cancel and reapply the same CC within 3months - they don't have 12-18 timeout like other big 4 banks. I've just closed one late Feb and applied same in Jun. No problem.

              • @[Deactivated]: Just for contrast, had NAB just call me and they basically already guessed all the issues with my application and added notes for it all…

(Had some unpaid leave on payslips, one CC wasn't closed on credit file yet (closed recently) and I put through one AMEX card with a c limit instead of two seperate ones with a and b limit. Confirmed all these details and they added notes without any extra documentation required)

Edit: andddd approved 30 mins later.

    • +1

Another problem with the ANZ one is that it's an additional $65 for an additional cardholder which is a deal breaker for me

  • +4

    open for over 12 months

This means you'll be slugged $395 for the 2nd year's fee - not worth it for extra 25K points.

    • Plus the 12 months you have to wait to churn

    • Apparently they prorata a refund if cancelled early, but that still means you'll have to pay the full $195 + 1 month next year instead of ~3 months of the $195.

$195 + ~$30 is worth it for 25k if you don't plan to flip another card in 12 months

  • +6

The other positive is NAB prorates your annual fee. Thus earning you that extra 25k points if you wait for 12 months and 1 day.

    • What does that mean sorry?

      • Means if you cancel your card after receiving your second year points 25k, you only pay for the number of days the card was used for in the second year. So if you cancel 3 days after it'd be $395/365*3 = $3.25

        • I wonder if it would it be possible to join, spend the $3K in 60 days, get credited the points, then leave in the first year and get credited back the annual fee for the remainder of the first year?

          • @eddomak: +1 - can someone answer this, please?

          • @eddomak: That's what @FutureTech means :)

            From experience they're correct

            • @Drakesy: @drakesy Thanks. The earlier posts seem to point to the experience if you cancel at the beginning of Year 2. I was more wondering about cancelling within Year 1.

          • +1

@eddomak: I cancelled in my first year after maybe 4 or 5 months and got the rest of the 1st year annual fee back.

            • @chillybags: Did you have to request for it? Or they pay back automatically?

    • Good to know, however be careful not to close the account before you get the points or it'll be lost. That means you'll pay probably 1 month's fee (~$33)

    • that's for second year annual fee, right? no way they'd do it on the first years

    • +1

That's a bit silly though. Just get the 100k and close immediately in order to reapply in a year's time to score another big bonus.

      • Agreed. But some people forget (or can't be bothered) so this is their consolation way out.

    • Is this a formal policy, or did they do it because you asked? Some banks will do this if you ask - but it'll depend on the representative serving you

    • ye but that means the card is open 13months, then you have to wait another 12 for the next 100k.

or you can spend and close within 3months and open a new card after 12 months.

the 2nd year bonus is a scam for noob churners

  • Is there a cap on points earn per month?

    • -1

Hi, the earn rate is 1 Qantas Point for each $1 spent on eligible purchases (up to $5,000). Over this cap, the earn rate is 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent up to a maximum spend of $20,000 per statement period.

1 Qantas Point per $1 up to $5,000
on everyday purchases using your Visa Card

      0.5 Qantas Points per $1 from $5,001 to $20,000
on everyday purchases using your Visa Card

  • This offer is exclusive to The Champagne Mile and it ends 30 September 2021.

Hasn't this been available for like the past 4 months via NAB's website? Is there specific criteria that is different/exclusive here?

    • +1

Hi, the standard offer on the public website is up to 110k bonus Qantas Points (90k in first year + 20k in second year) with reduced $295 first year annual fee (save $100). This offer is 100k bonus Qantas Points in first year + 20k bonus points in second year, with $195 first year reduced annual fee (save $200).

  • +1

Last time I looked at a nab credit card application, it wanted expenses split up by category (like they do for home loans these days) .. rather than just one figure.
    Bit annoying.

  • +2

I'm on this card atm - it's a good one. Bonus points came in quick. NAB app is good.

  • Hi

Is this offer available if I already have a NAB Qantas card for my business?

    • Hi, this offer is not available to existing customers who have received or are entitled to receive NAB Qantas Rewards bonus Points for a new personal NAB Qantas Rewards credit card in the twelve months prior to the opening of a NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card. If you only hold a NAB business card, then the T&Cs don't state that you are precluded from the offer.

  • Minimum salary required to apply for this card? Didn't see the info anywhere….

    • Hi, NAB doesn't currently advertise a minimum salary for this product. I believe there was one in place up until around 2 years ago, but it was then removed. If you contact NAB direct, they may be able to provide further guidance here.

    • +2

Minimum credit is $15K so I believe around +$70K/annual salary.

  • Do you have to go in the branch to verify ID? My local branch is temporarily closed.

    • Hi, NAB does have an online verification process for new users, this is mentioned on the offer landing page. Unsure exactly how this works, but I'd assume they have processes in place to enable online ID verifications during lockdowns. I'll check this with them to see if I can obtain further information.

      • Thanks, I was talking to an ANZ customer rep and they told me to go in a branch for ID verification which is super annoying.

        • +1

Yes, ANZ & St George are quite antique with their validation for new customers. If you want to setup direct CC repay, but from external bank, then you have fill a form and bring into branch. Probably same for big 4 banks.

With Citibank, just do a secured upload the doc.

          • @timhn: Add westpac to that list as well.

Dinosaurs. I even had to do westpac again after opening a new card 12 months after closing a previous one… ><

    • You can add NAB to the list too.
I already have a NAB account (for 5 years), but was also requested to go to a branch again with 100 points of ID.

NAB is not my main bank though.

  • +2

Looks like the link on this deal is still active - might be worth a try for more points upfront?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/621441

    • More fee upfront as well, wouldn't pay $100 for 20k points.

      • Fee is largely irrelevant if having the card open for only a short period

    • Looks like its targeted - the offer pages states "This offer only applies to personal credit card applications made by existing pre-assessed NAB customers and is not transferable to another individual"

  • Ah damn I literally just took the 90k deal 4 days ago as I needed a new card. I guess it's only 10k difference oh well

    • +1

Same! I just got approved as well. 15k points damn

  • How do you add an additional card holder?

  • Need a new $0 first year card deal. Just finished up my amex and ANZ cards this year and currently with WBC. Doesn't leave a lot of options.

    • i got cba ultimate fair bit of spend and less points but $0

  • Does anyone know what the minimum credit limit is on this card?

    • +6

      $15,000

Do people never bother clicking and reading the links before asking these kinds of questions?

  • What's everyone using their Qantas frequent flyer points on these days?

    • May be get some Qantas Business Class Experience at Home or Pyjamas
      :)

  • Honestly NAB Signature deals are better than it looks. If you want to cancel the card, they will give you a pro-rata annual fee refund for it. Load up the live chat after you log in and they will be happy to assist. Refund came through, too easy.

    • -1

Can you cancel the card within the 1st year and get pro-rate refund $195?

So spend 3k as fast as you can, get 100k points, then cancel and get refunded pro-rata $195?

How long does it take for the 100k points in your Qantas account after reaching 3k spend?

      • For me it was between the 1st and 2nd statement period to get the 100k bonus points. After it goes through, you can have a live chat with a NAB customer service rep and they would be happy to assist with the pro rata refund. Not totally free, but it’s worth it IMO

        • Did you cancel on your 1st year?

          • @Homr: Cancelled it after the 5th-6th month but I know you can do it after you get your bonus points as well. No problems cancelling within the 1st year.

  • -5

    $195 fee kilsl the deal

    • 100k Qantas points is like $600-1000 of gift cards minimum lol, and that's the most inefficient way to use them…

  • Thanks OP, applied and conditionally approved following income verification.
