I have the 240hz model of this laptop with 100% sRGB coverage (it makes a world of a difference), got it for this price on launch. This is an okay price, but now you can buy 5800H models in this range.

I believe Gigabyte has rebranded this Clevo NH55DPQ.

The 180w power brick is fairly small and the removable battery is a nice touch. However don't expect decent battery life on this model at all. There are two M.2 bays and one 2.5" SATA drive bay, so there's definitely plenty room for storage upgrades. The CPU can reach throttling point, however, the GPU remains fairly cool. Arctic MX-5 has made a huge improvement. The chassis isn't thin but it reasonable size as far as 15.6" laptops go. The i/o is far above most new laptops with 3x USB A, 1x USB C 3.2 Gen 2, 1x DP Mini, 1x HDMI, 1x 1G ethernet, 1x headphone, 1x mic, 1x SD card slot. Although, a Thunderbolt port would have been icing on the cake. The fan does ramp during normal use, this could be rectified with the included Control Centre application. It also includes 3 different power and fan profiles. The keyboard has a fairly long travel and can feel a little mushy, I don't mind it. Trackpad size is a little below average. The laptop does have thermal pads on both the GDDR6 and VRMs, which is always nice to see. Overall I would say this is a well built laptop that would serve as replacement for a low to mid-range desktop. However, I would personally spring for a better screen.

    • This was a really informative comment, and you seem really knowledgeable about this kind of thing, do you have any recommendations for mid-range gaming laptops with removable battery? Your advice would be much appreciated.

I would either wait for a discount on the Lenovo Legion 5 with a 5800H and RTX 3060 and 80wh battery like this eBay deal. I'd wait for a restock and discount of this model of Legion 5 Pro if wanted maximum performance from the 140w RTX 3070 and a bright 500nit display. The power bricks on both these are quite large.

If you need Thunderbolt for external nvme drives or eGPUs, then look to Intel 11th gen (like the i7 11800H).

FYI - around 46MH/s ETH mining
55C - 57C on Vram temps with battery removed , base plate removed and cooling pad.

    • Can a laptop start without a battery plugged in?

      • +2

Yes, if you have the ac adapter/charger plugged in.

Wait… miners are buying laptops exclusively for non-LHR cards???

      • If they were it would be out of stock, i think its a little bit too expensive for just mining.

BUT would be worth if u needed a laptop and mine on it to make back the money, 12 hours mining on it comes to $4-$5 a day i think on 48 hash (at current prices)

        $4 x 30 = $120 in a month

        • $112 per month after power.

      • Nearly not as much here in Australia, but in China, the rebranded Clevos with 3060/3070 are being sold with 2core cpus for 5-6k Chinese yuan and does nothing but mine cryto. Especially after the crypto farm crackdown many shifted to laptop mining.

    • what's the real world profit on that, $90- 100 per month?

  • is there any chaper laptop with RTX3060 or above (good TDP version) ? I don't care about display etc.

      $1400

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-15-6-inch-i5-11…
      $1500

      Both 95w

They have been cheaper before at Bing Lee but sold out.

Personally, I'd wait for the next Dell eBay sale and get a G15 Ryzen 7 125w 3060 with mux switch for $1800.

      • thanks mate! do Acer have a education portal like Lenovo ?

        • +1

          acer have refurbished section

I got the 3060 95w Acer Nitro for $1149 couple weeks back

it's $1349 now but I think there's a good chance it'll drop to $1149 over the weekend again

          https://online.acer.com.au/acer/store/refurbished/refurbishe…

mine looks and feels like new, same warranty so all good

I reckon that's the lowest price for a 3060 laptop ever. as soon as I saw it I immediately purchased, and sold my old 1660ti lappy for $50 less, so it's a super solid $50 upgrade

          • @shabaka: wow! what a deal! thanks a lot, that's the best price for 3060 95W :D
did you get this one ?

            • +1

@bazingaa: yes, that's the same one I got.

when I was looking at it 3 weeks ago it also was $1349 during the week, but dropped to $1149 on Friday night, and stayed at that price through Saturday and Sunday, and I ordered on Saturday morning. dispatched on Monday, and Tuesday it was already on my desk

so I would suggest you monitor the price and see if it dips on the weekend again

              • @shabaka: thanks mate, is there any free RAM slots and M.2 slots for upgrading ?

                • +2

@bazingaa: yes, plenty. It comes with one free RAM slot, one free M.2 slot, and one free 2.5" SATA slot (SATA cable for it is in the charger box)

which matches my old laptop, so it was a one to one upgrade, just moved my NVMe drive with games over to the M.2 slot, RAM stick into free RAM slot, and spinning 2.5 drive into the 2.5 SATA slot and it's been working like charm ever since

you need DDR4-3200 RAM for this machine (runs as 2933)

                  • @shabaka: It doesn't have an SD card slot does it?

                    • @CVonC: no SD slot, no

I have a USB3 reader I use, it's faster than any built in ones

                    • @CVonC: I bought a cheap Ebay card to USB reader. All good. Most won't have an issue.

                  • @shabaka: it is gone now, 404 error. they only has 2 refurbished laptops now.

                    • +1

@bazingaa: yeah looks like all scooped up!

check back again, it gets restocked once in a while

                      • @shabaka: it is back at 1349, saw some reviews mentioning CPU bottleneck with 4c CPU, did you notice it?

                        • @bazingaa: no, haven't noticed to be honest

                        • @bazingaa: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Nitro-5-AN515-55-Laptop-R…

you can see in this review, in comparison section, that it performs sometimes a bit faster than a 3060 system with a 6 core i7, sometimes a tiny bit slower

while it certainly outperforms in games a 2060 laptop with a 4800H which is 8 core 16 thread

which means that even if 4 core CPU is not enough for 3060 in 95w tgp, the deficit is minimal, if any. and 4 cores allow 3060 reach its potential

                          so.. all good
