Update on 10th Nov:
There is a pop up on the page now explaining why some addresses are not eligible

Why can’t I get 5G Home Internet yet?
Telstra 5G Home Internet may not yet be in your area.
You may be in a 5G coverage area, but your address may not be getting the minimum download speed of 50Mbps required for 5G Home Internet to work.
The good news is we’re expanding our 5G home internet capacity all the time, so please check your address again soon.

Is there a credit check required to sign up?

    • Most post paid services come with some sort of credit check.

  • -8

sorry OP, there is nothing with the deal, just let everyone know that Telstra support service is utterly crap now, it comes from who with them for 7 years.

    • It actually is terrible, but still might be worth fighting through for a good deal.

    • -1

negs might be from Telstra staffs

  • 1 month free with Optus as well

    unlimited data

I don't have a line of sight of the tower but connection is pretty good. speeds are 1.5 - 2 times faster than what 4g was.

waiting for NBN was the biggest mistake I ever made

    • Only 2 times? Not worth it

      • +1

what do you mean not worth it

same price, more speed, unlimited data

plus now I can flip the 4g modem on the eBay if I want to

        • Good on you. 5g not available at mine

  • Can you configure the modem to 4g only? I get atrocious 5g speed at my place, but excellent 4g speed.

    • Just checked , don’t see such option.

      • @icantremember - I am on the Optus version of this plan. There's no 5G tower near me and I've been connected to 4g all this time.

  • It's funny how they advertise such high speeds only to limit you to 1TB data. Its like giving you a ferrari but you're only allowed to drive in the city.

    • +4

Some people only need to drive in the city.

    • You can drive the Ferrari at full speed in the city, just not for long as the police will catch you

  • Failed at step 1…..

  • +1

Weird, I'm in the coverage area for Telstra 5g but not for home internet 5g

  • +2

Alleluia! Perhaps, finally, there is a viable solution to getting off the $#&@ing NBN.

  • The address checker is not working.

  • +2

Have been on this since invite only. Amazing compared to the dogshit FTTN service I had. Averaging 600mbps down 90mbps up. Warning if you are playing competitive games that sometimes I've had random ping spikes to 155ms for about 30 seconds (ping is normally ~35 from Brisbane to Valorant servers). Seems to occur once or twice a night, unsure the cause yet. 1TB is tricky to manage but 25Mbps isn't terrible if you do go over (FTTN speed was <50mbps anyway for me). I use VPN port forwarding to access media server remotely. Next investment is a 5G antenna since these modems come with ports for external antennas.

    • +1

Thanks for confirming. I need the stable low ping which my shitty 30mbps FTTN provides

      • +2

Yeah I honestly have considered using Launtel for FTTN and paying for it on weekends when I play games then pausing the service during the week.

        • Thats actually not a bad idea. A bit of work deactivating/reactivating Launtel broadband but worth it i reckon

    • Hey mate, do the antenna ports say what they are?
      SMA perhaps?
      Cheers

    • Does this come with a dedicated IP?

      • Short answer is no.

Longer answer is: I'm using Port Forwarding with a Dedicated IP from my VPN provider.

  • Unavailable and I'm within 800m of a 5g tower oh well. Back to my FTTN :(

  • I am using this.. Though speed test always returns speeds what they are claiming but it fails to do certain tasks, especially in evenings and feels a bit lagged(sometimes too much) especially on mobile devices.

  • -1

Seems like a pretty good plan, the data allowance is just ain't enough.

But when I was previously using the Telstra 5G network, as my primary internet connection, I was pretty happy for 2 years or so … but in the last few months of the contract, the service degraded - this was 12months ago now though.

  • -1

If this was 20$ cheaper if have it all day every day

  • Crazy! I am bracing for a very slow 5G . Back to the slow ages…

  • Does Telstra give you discounts on mobile plans if you have home broadband? I’m on Superloop and am wondering if I move to this plan if I may be able to get a cheaper SIM Plan. I think Optus do that kind of thing

    • No they don't. However, you may get a port-in credit ($10 per month) applied to your mobile plan. It needs to be negotiated via Telstra chat.

  • +6

Feel ridiculous that mobile network is even faster than landline
the NBN project is just a waste of money

    • +2

If you're in an NBN FTTP area you can get gigabit NBN.

      • +1

only around 30% of homes have FTTP connection
and majority are with the worst connection type FTTN

        • +1

They'll be upgraded. If it wasn't for the NBN, users would still be on… ADSL.

Having both Optus 5G and HFC NBN at work, I prefer the stability of a cabled solution. Latency and packet loss is all over the place on wireless.

      • I was on UltraFast FTTP NBN and it is still slower than this 5G Home Internet.

        • What plan/ISP were you on?

          • @eug: Telstra UltraFast Plan, I cancelled and signed up for this 5G Home Internet, saving $70 per month.

            • +1

@T-man: Looking at Whirlpool, people are getting fast speeds on that plan. Was your router or wifi AP able to handle the speed?

              saving $70 per month.

That's great, although I would expect a 1TB plan to cost less than an unlimited one.

              • @eug: I always use the provided modem by Telstra, so used Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 for NBN and this new Telstra modem for 5G Home Internet:

                https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/60614/92084/img_1931.j…

                • @T-man: Oh just checking as this was an issue mentioned by others on OzB in the past, on NBN you were definitely connected to the old modem over 5GHz wifi (or LAN)?

                  • @eug: I run the speed test on my desktop using an ethernet port.

                    • @T-man: What speeds did you get?

                      • +1

@eug: NBN: roughly 700mb down and 140 up
                        5G Home: 900mb down and 100 up

                        • +1

@T-man: Oh, 700Mbps. 5G advertised speeds are 50-600Mbps so I thought your NBN speeds were in the low hundreds. Telstra does say the typical speed for the Ultrafast plan is 700Mbps so that's right.

Now that the 5G plans have opened up, it'll be interesting to see what your 5G speeds will be in a few months time. At least there's a 1TB quota so you won't get many people hammering it endlessly.

Just rang Telstra and the address checker is down, they couldn't even check my availability on their end

  • +1

Pretty silly it says not available in my area yet I know for a fact I live directly across the road from a 5g telstra tower lol

    • Same. I have 2 telstra 5g towers within 300m line of sight and computer says no. I wonder if the address checker is just rejecting everything
      .

  • Sorry we are unable to check your address at the moment.

  • Went onto live chat this is the reason they gave me

Not all addresses shown as '5G' in Telstra's mobile coverage maps will be eligible for 5G Home Internet. We want to make sure our customers have a great experience which is why the serviceability quality checker may show that 5G home is not available to customers who otherwise gets 5G coverage on their mobiles.

Now, since FTTN is the only available technology type at the premise, I'm afraid we will not be able to provision this 5G Home Internet plan.

  • -4

Tried 6 different addresses in different areas but it says not available. So ridiculous.

    • what suburb are you in?

      • I tried, Zetland, Rhodes, Wolli Creek, Kirrawee, Wentworth point, Kensington, none worked

        • It's stupid… Check number 68 on a street "Unavailable" then checked 68B on the same street "Available" bloody ridiculous.

  • THe address checker should be back now, i have managed to order one for my home, bye bye NBN!

    • What suburb you are in?

      • Ryde 2112 nsw

    • Yep checked earlier and it denied me, just checked again and it's available.

  • Old address is able to get this deal, new address is not eligible.

    Pain…

    • +1

exactly the same boat here :(

    • +1

Try again, try a house nearby and then try yours again.

I live in a townhouse, for example twnhs 15/3 ABC Street , it said not available, then I tried just simply 3 ABC street and it worked. then i tried 15/3 again and it worked

      • I just did what you suggested, tried my neighbour's address, shows as available.

Tried my address again, not eligible.

To quote the Fresh Prince, "How come he don't want me, man?" :|

        • +1

yeah same, tried some addresses around my area and they worked but not mine

        • You can order for one address and get it shipped to another

          Hmm

  • +1

Damn, I pay 85$ for 400GB in Toowoomba and looks like I'm getting ripped off. This offer does not work for me sadly.

    • +1

Internet mob ripping everyone off it sucks. They going to be crying once they loose a shitload of customers to starlink once it becomes mainstream with more plans, on-top of that more reliable and better ping

  • Just signed up - thanks OP. Currently on aussie broadbands NBN and have been waiting for 5g to become available in my area 3174. Also means I can get rid of 2 modems and a crap load of wiring tucked in our tv unit.

  • +1

Jesus Christ it throttles at 25megabit? That's like default plan for people on NBN wireless holy shit that's not bad in the slightest. And it's cheaper than nbn wireless lmao god I hate isps

  • Cheaper and faster than my NBN I have with Telstra. Feelsgoodman

  • Ooohh, tempting.
Is the modem/router OK? I have NBN and have to be careful locating the router to get coverage upstairs

    • +1

Look for my comment above, the modem is good, better than the Nokia one Vodafone and Optus offering their customers.

  • Na thanks, I'm waiting for 6G. =p

    • Pffftt. 6G is too slow. I’m waiting for 7G.

  • -2

another 5g con job where only few can get. move onto the next bargain nothing to see here

    • telstra 5g reaches 75% of aussies

i would rather be with this incompetent company than be with the rotting copper corpse of nbn

      • +1

yes i agree but according to a rep on earlier post it going be limited per postcode

    • Agree tried 3 different addresses in different suburbs in Melbourne not available… seems to be very limited

  • 5G works for parramatta, but modem wont let me. Damn you telstra!!

  • This sounds pretty good to me, I would like to know though, is this powerful enough to supply to a 4 bedroom home in all areas? two story so the footprint isn't that large.

    • You'd be better off using this 5g modem purely as a modem, and get a mesh router to provide wifi coverage for your whole house.

  • Can this modem be bridged?

    • Apparently not (source: whirlpool) in anycase for mobile broadband you are behind cgnat… so port forwarding wont work

      • Wow can't be bridged….. Wonder what I'll do with my orbi mesh system then

        • I use mine with my orbi perfectly, changed from a telstra smart modem gen 2 to this and no issues at all.

        • In the Orbi options configure Orbi as the Wi-Fi access point.

  • Ordered one too. Lets see how first month pans out side by side with nbn. Then send one of them packing

  • Do I need a router too?

    • +1

      It comes with one.

  • If the current house address showed no service, has anyone tried an address a few houses away (that showed availability) and change the delivery address to your own house? Then set up to be used? How about the billing?

    • It’s not geo locked. The SIM card is locked to the Telstra tower that’s closest to the address. Just need to be connected to the same 5g tower.

      • Thanks for this info

  • Well I'm on fixed wireless NBN that ranges from 5/5 to 65/7, fluctuated like crazy so despite the negatives of dealing with Telstra I'm in, thanks op.

  • Does anyone know the dimensions of the Modem?

    • I have not seen one (it is on order) but according to a review video I saw, it is the same height as the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 but a little thicker and wider.
      The Gen 2 is 80mm x 131mm x 213mm
