    Waste of time.

    Why all the negs?
People knew stock was extremely limited.
People knew staff would have a pick at everything beforehand.
These types of "clearance" sales are always like this… limited stock, gone in a flash.

And no-one can ever say that if they were in the position of working at DSE and had the opportunity to purchase prior to the sale that they would have not done it. Every job has it's fringe benefits…and these guys were lucky enough to be orking there at this time. I'm sure you get discounts or benefits where you work.

    • +5

      I'm negging because:
      1. The DSE reps talked up the sale on OzB, then ran for cover when they realised how this would actually play out,
      2. Mate took a day off, drove 100k and ended up with the Wii Fit starter kit yoga mat thing, and 2 DS games; but most importantly,
      3. He didn't get a $100 Xbox for me

Dick was on ABC this morning whinging about not getting his jam into Coles. Where's my Xbox Dick?

        1. Mate took a day off, drove 100k and ended up with the Wii Fit starter kit yoga mat thing

        wait what?

      • +1

Dick Smith sold DSE to woolworths many years ago, so he has no idea where the xbox is :)

  • +1

kind of crap you can't neg after you revoke positive vote
"You have already voted on this deal. Your vote has been subsequently revoked"

  • Same experience for me, didn't see any of the big deals, just looked like a quick way of getting rid of old stock.

  • +2

    waste of time and petrol

  • +9

Posting a negative because everyone else is.

    • +1

No doubt that was a similar attitude of the DSE staff hoarding sale items

  • -1

cant believe i thought this was gonna be good

  • +2

want to be a part of most negs deals :D

    • all aboard…

  • -1

    crap

  • +6

I don't understand why for these sales there aren't limits per person. One of the functions of a sale is marketing and it just seems like common sense that if one guy can take the whole stock then as a marketer your not getting the job done.

      • +3

u know what i'm not lacking? an xbox 360..

      • Just need to read the board and I'm right and your wrong. Everything is about marketing.

        • Exactly, I think DS should have tried to do something to reduce possibilities of what really will be scalping, there should have been limits, their prices were that much lower that shifting stuff was never going to be a problem. I also think that if stock was so limited, they probably should have just let staff have first dibs and then cleared out the crap.

In a nutshell, this clearance was really ruined by ozbargain, not DS, many people heard about it, and there wasn't enough stuff to go around to the numbers that went.

  • +4

Is anyone sad to see dick smith closed down? Not me.

    • +4

The perfect "It's all about me, totally, everything is about me" Ozbargain post.

I doubt the DS staff are thrilled about its future.

  • So I went to OW to try and get a pricematch and it turns out my store (Braddon ACT) doesn't have any of the G19, G9x, SW X6, G15 :(

    • Officially only stock limited gaming items and none of them were in the list. I got the last g19 btw in Canberra centre

      • +1

shakes fist that was supposed to be mine!

        • I actually saw it hiding at the back and my friend asked the staff if it was for sale. Luckily it was, I had given up already and wasn't going to argue with them over it

      • Which means you were in the queue when I walked past at 8.15am. The staff said later that the G19s were the first thing to go.

  • This would have slightly better if they limited one type of item per customer, and only reveal that fact on the day.

    • +1

That would require the administering of a sensible management practice

  • +7

"You must comment on the deal before you can cast a neg vote, here it is!!!

  • +1

Had been to Greensbourough sale, only one g19 left. Gave it to the guy 1ho was 1st in queue. Was looking at the consoles, staff yelled out no consoles before it was even opened. Dissapointed.

  • Absolute waste of time. Dick Smith is a joke.

  • Anyone know if theres anything left at the main Perth CBD store?

    • +1

That assumes there was anything there to start with. Not much at Livingston anyway.

  • got a few $5 games from the bargain bin. heaps better bargains than target or big w ever had. this sale has it's good and bad points but was seriously overhyped by the leak and facebook. BUT, it's not all over, there is still round 2 on the 11th and the closing sales of some dick smith stores. i agree on an item limit on sales such as this, maybe 5-10 items max (no doubles).

  • Was there any "fine print" attached to this sale thingy?

If so did anybody read it?

  • I kinda wanna revoke my +ve vote but hey, it got me to go for a bit of a walk. Can't neg something that makes my lard ass exercise ;)

I wasn't dying to get something so no dramas from my end but I feel bad for all you guys who ended up wasting your time because of this. I'm not a big fan of how the DS staff have handled themselves throughout all this and ideally, staff would have to line up like everyone else. But I think even if they were limited to one or two items each, I would've been happy with that.

  • where did all this information come from, it was not Dick Smith themselves in a big newspaper add it was just leaked information online that people saw and thought everyone would be able to get little did they know it was just a few consoles in a few stores. I worked at officesworks and we from time to time would get computers and cameras marked down to $30 just to get rid of them if that was leaked online you would have the same result as this people getting angry at a company that did nothing wrong

    • +2

Dick Smith confirmed it on facebook - that's hardly a few items marked down in a remainder bin.

  • +6

wow shocking to see staff baggin items before customers.
    neg for me

  • +2

Went to Lidcombe store at about 11am.. Place was empty.. nothing on shelves pretty much. There were about 6 of those $5 Wii towers… looked and walked around for a while.. then saw that there was only 1 Wii tower left! I went to the front counter - saw two young boys with about 15 XBox 1500 cards.. they were laughing. The staff guy was helping them out and searching the store for them. I asked another worker if there was anything good left that was on sale. He said no. (haha, what did i expect?).. Left the store… went to Spotlight (BORING).. then walking back to the car i saw two DSE employees with an orange trolley (you know those flat ones?) Packed FULL of boxes.. I only saw about 4 DJ Hero boxes.. (it's on the list).. but they had other boxes, just they were in front and too far away… SOoooo.. pretty much they bought EVERYTHING. Seriously… about 35-40 boxes, they were going to their car…

    • If the staff gets to 'jump in' the queue before public bargain hunters, then -ve from me. these "talk to the 'snatch'perts" should really just have their own staff shop for these "sales". Sorry to all the ppl who have missed out on this deal as well..

  • Lol @ all the whingers

As if you wouldn't of bought the consoles if you were staff.

It was an unadvertised sale with limited stock what do you expect,
I guess it is school holidays ,you kids need a job.

    • -1

      No it isn't…

      • Surely is.

        • -1

          Well in NSW it isn't.

    • totally agree!!!

  • Complete scam… just went to both Disk Smiths in Perth City. The one in William St, they were clearing out the shelves. I asked about all the 'deals' and the guy said it was the ones with the red stickers. There were like 5 red stickers. All rubbish games. Other Dick Smith had nothing on sale at all……

    • -7

Total scam, I guess they shouldn't of advertised the sale.

      Oh wait….they didn't.

    • I was considering lining up at the Perth CBD store at 9am, considering it is listed as one of their "big" stores. Glad I didn't as when I came off the train at 730, there was what looked like a line already. Thanks for your post but shame you walked away empty-handed.

  • picked up dead island on ps3 for $10. good buy

although unchartered twin pack was not on sale as the link described

  • +1

All the games from the list i wanted were on the shelf, but full price. Checked at counter and they said only marked stock, nothing else, leaving Fighters Uncaged the only xbox game reduced. :(

  • Bankstown store (use to be Powerhouse)

Line of about 50-100 people at the door 5 mins before opening.

After squeezing everyone through the same door even though the staff could've opened the 2 other entrances they had, rushed to grab whatever was available.

Managed to get 2 x Logitech G13, also found a WOW wireless headset, but after lining up for nearly a good 45 minutes to an hour, was told the product code scanned from the headset wasn't the same as the one advertised as clearance pricing on the dicksmith site. Disappointed, but fair enough…

Loads of customers in front experienced similar issues of picking lots of items, which weren't on sale. Had 2 uni students in front with a G27 and a bunch of games and xbox point cards, none of which scanned at clearance pricing. They waited pretty long too =\

There were only 3 staff for the entire store. They were very good at shooting people down telling them all the stuff they picked was not on sale.

Have to say you'd have to be very lucky to have got anything worthwhile.

Overall impression of this sale is that like someone mentioned before, we're just helping them clear out their old stock.

Well done to their marketing team for this confusing and disappointing sale.

    • +1

I did say this is Dick Smith's ploy to get ozbargainer community to do a stocktake for them. Instead of staff having to look for unwanted goods, why not get the people to look or them and bring it to the counter.

  • when i went to one store one guy had like 10 games and was asking the staff to check if they were reduced

  • +1

    Dick Smith Toowoomba
    Got - Avatar CE $5 PS3
    - RUSE $5 PC
    - Sports Champion $5 PS3
    - Eye Pet PS3 with camera $5

Pretty good deal had a plently of stock left including Gran Turismo Prologue, WWE 2011, FIFA 2011, a bunch of PS3 move games, Prince of Persia ect…….

  • +1

Went to Dick Smith on George St, Sydney. No consoles were on sales at the prices noted in the post. All they had was one bin with assorted games. Nothing of particular interest.

  • +12

Probably would have preferred this to be an April fools joke.

  • -4

Dick Smith will hopefully be out of business altogether.

    • bit harsh

  • +6

To the guy I saw buying five yoga mats from Dick Smith Sydney, that was the only thing that I wanted from the sale and you took them all. Do you really need FIVE yoga mats?

    • +15

      Geeks can get pretty fat.

    • +3

one for each stomach to rest on while playing vidya gams

    • +2

Don't be selfish. He needed those yoga mats to sell on eBay because he doesn't earn enough already from working!

    • I got two of the Fitness Starter Kits (including Yoga Mats) from Dick Smith George Street at lunch time - there was still plenty of the mats and Starter Kits left then. I was surprised there was still a smattering of Wii accessories still left (but not much of anything else I guess).

  • +3

I have just come back from Plenty Valley Dick Smith and witness first hand the hoarding of stock by staff.

  • Just bought two games for $5 dollars each in DSE Chatswood Chase, good bargain for me.

Xbox360 uDraw Pictionary HD original price was $49.90 but I got it for $5

PCDVD Lord of the Rings War in The North original price $30 I got it for $5

    good deal

  • +4

So many people walking funny cos they all got dicked in the rear.

  • +3

If you have not seen. Dick Smith facebook comments are quite funny today http://www.facebook.com/dicksmithaustralia

  • +1

SO does anyone know if office work will price match the G19 even it is a special order item for the store?>

  • +1

Game listed to be discounted were NOT discounted and is marked at full price, I picked up 3DS pets game and went to the counter, the guy told me its $59.95, what?? its even more expensive than other stores full price.

Nothing was cheap, well some really really old and irrelevent DS games were like 5-10bucks, but who wants tham? EB,JB sells them @ that price anyways.

    • +1

It was actually $20, learn to read mate.

      • -7

There was also one for $40. Boo hoo.

        • +7

You clearly don't get it, the amount of stock that was available to be sold was so minimal that it could have easily been all absorbed by the staff which is what should have happened behind closed doors. Instead the guys in marketing thought it be a great way to create some fake hype and get people spending money. People are upset at how poorly it was organised, upset that they didnt show what was on sale and that they never confirmed what was going on sale. As for reserving stock that was disabled if you read anything before posting. All you could do was check which stores had stock which was completly wrong due to the fact that staff had it stashed away. So people wasted their time going in and there was nothing there = neg

        • smart enough to do holds on a no hold item…..genius

stores showign stock online, go in and none to be found upon store opening….

    • +2

in every sale some people will be happy some wont b… i say do your research, prepare well and hope for the best… clearance sales dont last long so what do people expect… it would be probably better having a limit on the quantity but remember that regardless you buy 1 or 10 still they get the same money so i guess putting a limit will slow down their stock clearance movement…they need to sell all as fast as they can… cheer up people!!!

    • Hehe, pretty hard to reserve a PS3 console when Home Delivery and Click & Collect options already Not Available. Checked store stock and couldn't find any store in Sydney have it, unless I want to drive 6+ hours out of town to hunt one down in some country towns. The petrol cost and loss of income (from not working) gonna cost me more than the saving I get.

    • +2
      1. So just mark the prices down as you need to, over time.
      2. There WERE plenty, before people started being shady. Remember this is the old DSi, not the 3DS.
      3. They specifically stated no reservations. (Unless you are a staff member hyuk hyuk)
      4. Should a Doctor or Nurse get a kidney donation before everyone else? They work in a hospital and have to deal with all sorts of annoying patients.
      5. They made it an official clearance and ran with it, on Facebook, Twitter and their own webstore.
      • -1

Only Ozbargain could equate a kidney transplant to a cheap XBOX game.

        • reminds me of the water bottle and the baby….it's the packaging!

    • -1

      UMAD?

    • +1

I think a lot of people are negging this deal because this deal simply has too many positive votes to it. For example, I am doing it because a lot of people who voted positive now want to vote negative (but they cannot).

I didn't go (I know my chances, and from past experience, I had people jumping the queue, bought multiple quantities - which meant I went home empty handed).

342 positive votes for this deal is not right.

      • Too many over-optimistic and naive people here :P

That's why I didn't cast my vote until after the sale has happened. If me and many people able to get what we want from this sale, then I'll give it a positive vote. If I am one of the few who get what I want but many people missed out, then I will not cast a vote. But in the end the outcome is expected - Mass Effect 3 ending for 99% of us.

    • +5

You are the idiot as all your points are incorrect.

      1. Clearance sale does not mean old stock it means for example IPad2 needs to be cleared for Ipad3. Ipad2s are hardly old stock,
      2. The limited stock is not the issue but the behaviour of DS staff.
      3. I did check three stores eyesterday - one minute before closing time. There was stock then and today both I and my girl-friend were first in line at two of those stores and miraculously the DSis had vanished before opening time.
      4. That's why some of you people end up in jail. Greedy up to the neck. I am sure staff needs 3 DSis so much more than for example in my case my partner's little boy who has got serious surgery tomorrow and will be in hospital for 4 weeks or longer. Sure. I bet all the stuff ends up on sales sites or Ebay. Go and check
      5. It was advertised on social media. Papers are not the only medium to advertise. So yes, it was advertised.
      6. DS did NOT do holds on sale items. You could NOT reserve anything.

Do your research mate before poison your environment with quarter-truths!

  • +4

Not only is this the most negged deal of all time, it now has more than double the negs of the previous record holder.

    • +5

      Angry tightarses, a bad combination

  • +2

I like many people didn't expect much from this sale and predicted many will be disappointed, and it turned out worse in reality. So here's my expected negative vote for the sale :D (Not for KKraig).

  • +1

All I've heard from friends is bad reports, one or two people managed to grab some obscure game titles just because they were $5 but nobody I know got what they wanted.

    • nothing left at warringah mall except singstar , few old games of little interest and broken case stock
  • +1

    poorly organized Sale

  • Interesting point; Called my local stores in Perth, who advised there was a big line and the decent stock got mobbed in like 5 mins…However one of the smaller stores noted that they had not had enough time to sticker items, and would be gradually releasing additional stock (games) over the next week….

  • +2

seriously nothing to buy. a $20 wii fit stand?

as mentioned… another dick's myth to me

  • I have a friend who works is DS, he admits to staff hoarding the consoles for themselves.

I still manage to get 3x 12mths Xbox LIve for $15 each.

  • I got to the Knox DSE at 9:05AM and pretty much all those items in the leaked list were gone - as in, the PS3 and XBox games shelves were about 3/4 empty, PS3's gone, DSi's gone, Logitech G15/G9x gone, didn't see any 3DS games.

There were a lot of older PC titles available. The G27 was still available but I don't know if it was for $140 like yesterday.

The lines were packed to the end of the store.

I'm not complaining (just stating what I saw) about the low stocks as I acknowledge this was a clearance and I didn't neg the deal. I think the people who waited in line at 8AM or 8:30AM deserve to get the deals.

    • +3

I was there (Brisbane store) at 7am first in line and still did not get anything as staff put it away for themselves. Fair, right?

    • Woah, that's surprising. When I checked their stock of various games and accessories on Friday they had heaps of everything.
      Pretty suss really.
