Absolutely horrible foreign exchange rate while paying by this card, I have mastercard. Used to be brilliant. Anyone else noticed same issue?

    • ??? The rate is the same as for transfers is it not?

After $350 AUD for the month there are additional fees but that is separate from FX rates and can be avoided if you space out the transactions

    • +1

Can you give numbers please? Exchange rates I see versus my visa and master cards are better along with international transfer fees into other accounts too.

Maybe I am missing a good deal on the cards/ banks you are using, so I am interested!

      • Used Wise MasterCard for recent Plex deal TRY₺617,24=71.36$ which included conversion fee of 0.40aud. Based on the comments everyone else paid less.

        • You know try recently crashed big just around that date and bounced back a little, right? So you are accounting for that?

From the comments seems like it’s 2 dollar difference which could easily be their recent volatility…

          • +1

@Larsson: Sure but unlikely that everyone who paid TRY before and after me paid less.
Also conversion fee? Many banks don’t charge that.

            • +2

@evgpek: This is exactly the gimmick. Banks just add the FX fee commission onto their rates and call it FX fee free lol. I don't give much credit to banks who claim to take zero commission just because they don't itemize it. You show me banks who convert at spot rates with no fees, that's a different story

              • +1

@trotsky: For the likes of 28Degrees you can check conversion rate on Mastercard site and that's exactly what you get on your CC bill, so not sure where you get your FX fee commission story from.

                • @[Deactivated]: Why on earth would you use 28 degrees as an example when I am talking about how legacy banks hide their commissions behind inflated FX rates?

28 degrees are one of the few cards that do not do this and to use it as an example here is picking an argument for no good reason? You want to give me the same comment but sub in a 3 letter big 4 bank? No, I didn't think so

                  • -1

@trotsky: Because it's one of very few credit cards that don't charge currency conversion fee, that, according to you, do not charge it because they unfavourable exchange rate. The other I know is Bankwest. All other banks charge currency conversion fees for foreign transactions.

So which 3 letter big 4 bank bank that does not charge fee but is using bad exchange rate you're talking about?

        • Followed your link. Went to the last page. 4 different reports of 72.06 from Coles MC. Which day did you do this spend on?

          • @trotsky: 25/11 in the morning

            • +1

@evgpek: Just went back and had a look, you should do the same. You were cheaper than ANZ, about the same as revolut and more expensive than Commbank. But that's for a rate that changes throughout the day, for a particular transaction and currency pair. What you should do in future is check the spot rate at the time of the transaction so we actually have a point of comparison.

              • @trotsky: ANZ was 71.09 at 8:02am
                Commonwealth 69.66 at 5:07
You have a point TRY fluctuated. However with conversion fees this card is no longer the best.

Have had Wise for about a year and use it frequently to transfer between AUD and USD. it's good.

I use ING, 28degrees and citibank as my travel cards - whether that's to withdraw cash or swipe while traveling overseas (when that was a thing).

How does the Wise Card compare? Is it a worthy alternative to the above?

    • They charge fee after you withdraw like 350 AUD a month, so yeah, better keep your cards. I once encountered ATM in rural Austria which wanted use really bad exchange rate or, if you declined, charged you 10 EUR for withdrawal. Ing card would have been handy for that.

Life hack for those who need afterhours support with Wise - just call overseas number active at that time and hang up when placed on hold. They'll call you back.

  • would this be useful if my family wants to transfer money from China bur in USD currency??

    • Wise's service would be useful, yes… but for your situation probably just use it to transfer& exchange to a bank account

Hi, can i ask the ozbaragin community knows the answer for these as a bit grey on their website. Also couldn't find this in the comments here.
    1. If you purchase international items online is there only the conversion fee rate?
    2. Is there bank fees to local items purchased online and does that still mean you can only purchase up to $250pm?
    2. Can you transfer between Australian bank accounts eg. WISE => NAB like a bank transfer? If you do, is there a CHARGE (AUD to AUD)?
    3. Does bank transfer count as either send $250pm limit or $250pm withdrawal limit?
As you can generate virtual cards, is there a limit?
    Thank you in advance.

      • Thank you

  • I'm planning to move to Germany soon. Is there any reason I shouldn't move all my money into a wise account and get paid into it when I am living there too? (other than interest rates on savings accounts).

    • Wise is not a bank. Its not as reliable as a bank because they could close your account at any time and leave you stranded.

    • They also have an account limit so you can't he holding like thousands of dollars in the account. Max EU $15,000 otherwise they charge you a fee amount each month your balance is over.

      https://wise.com/help/articles/5Sle9tyfybL40w6D2ajcMV/i-live…

    • Here’s what you probably should do , start a bank account in Germany for your usual needs and receipt of wages etc. Use a reliable money transfer service to transfer your money from aust to Germany (auditor euro) if it’s a large amount use something like OFX. They provide better service and faster transfers IMHO. If it’s a few grand use wise.

      • Can ofx be used like wise, especially getting a card. I was suggested to use wise for the first few weeks until I was settled and registered my residency, opened a German bank account, etc.

    • You can do that temporarily. I did similar when moving country. But don't put ALL your money there. For EUR+AUD only they charge you if you hold over a certain amount, and also because they're not a bank the protection should they go bust is very different to a bank. From personal experience I will add that their service used to be incredibly unreliable 2 years ago and it haunts me still. No issues recently but I used to have every issue possible including balance not being correct transactions on statement just disappeared card constantly declined randomly incorrect fees charged etc.
Fine to use at the start until you are settled and have opened a German bank account.
Don't put your life savings in wise. Keep them in oz and just use Wise for your first few months spending and then use Wise to transfer your savings directly into your German bank account at a later date.

  • To be clear, withdrawing money using this Card is free up to AUD$350 equivalent and also up to 2x. Above that, there will be fees involved.

This compares unfavourably to Citibank which doesn't charge fees when withdrawing money overseas of any amount. Not sure with HSBC but presumably the same.

    • Or just use ING, they even cover the overseas ATM fee which can be $8 in Thailand or $15 i the rip-off Fiji.

      • isn't there some requirements involved to access the free ATM withdrawal fee?

        • There are but they're but not very onerous. In the month before you travel, just make a deposit of $1000 (which you can withdraw straight after) and 5 card transactions (which you can do in one supermarket visit by splitting the purchase if you want).

          • @dazweeja: I see….what happens if you're overseas for more than the month? Is there a work around this?

            • @bawlingonabudget: just transfer the money in from other bank or use ING as your main bank, you can use the card oversea as well with no fx fee so you don't even need to withdraw so much cash. You just need to use the card 5 times i.e online transactions or in the shop either in Australia or oversea.

This compares unfavourably to Citibank which doesn't charge fees when withdrawing money overseas of any amount

      on citibank brand atms only

      • Not in my experience. In Japan, 7-11 allows fee free withdrawal. I did use Singapore Citibank when in Singapore. Anyone can comment?

In Indonesia, I was pretty sure BCA let it through as well fee free. Anyone else can comment?

        • When I went to Indonesia, I used to use citibank with no atm fees. Most banks were fee free except for like 2 big ones specifically. There was a list of banks you could use from every country that was supported on whirlpool that I used as my bible so I never actually went to the banks it said not to use.

However, I'm pretty sure citibank changed how their international stuff works a year or so ago so this might all be outdated now.

          • @AlmightyBeing: wait until you go to Thailand or Fiji then you will appreciate that you have ING card.

    • HSBC don't charge ATM withdrawal fees at some ATMs (those they network with) but their FX rates are worse than Wise's, hence why I moved. I don't mind the nickel and diming of Wise on txfr and ATM charges as long as the total fees are lower, which for me (USD to AUD) they have been to date

      • HSBC recently moved to what they called Real Time Exchange Rates. I got notification about that.

Whether that is better or not vs Citibank, not sure. One thing I know, Wise was better vs Citibank vs HSBC.

However, we are talking about accessing cash overseas fee free.

Says $10 for the debit card ?

Has it ended? I think I see $10fee

This is a good company that I've used for years. They played a big role in loosening the grip that major banks had on one of the more outrageous rackets in the financial services industry (forex).

"2 Free ATM withdrawals up to A$350 a month, then a small withdrawal fee

Only pay a small conversion fee when you convert your money — typically between 0.35% and 2,22%"

What is the point of this card?!? When you can even get oversea ATM fee reimbursed with ING bank and no fx fee.

    • Agree - although ING recently put a monthly cap on international ATM fee reimbursements.

Either way ING still seems like the better option for travel.

      • they limit to 5 times a month which is still very generous.

  • is this the best card to buy YouTube premium and Spotify

  • ive had transferwise since 2017 and its a godsend. i use this to transfer usd into and withdraw from my tastytrade account. i pay my indian youtube premium, argentinian crunchyroll, american google fi, turkish netflix using transferwise.

    • Google Fi can only be used in US!

      • Unlimited Plus and Flexible also come with international data in 200+ destinations, and for supported Pixel phones, 5G coverage is available in select countries and territories.

  • Free shipping on international purchase??

  • Um, mine was free back in the day.

  • UP Bank has API integration with Wise too. So you can do international transfers directly from your UP account using Wise.

  • Thanks. I opened an account and transfered $40, not $30 so I can withdraw from ATMs for free.

  • I just transferred $30 and managed to get a free debit card sent out.. already added to Apple Pay too. Offer still on? No mentioin of $10 fee anywhere in the process.

  • Legend. Thanks heaps for this, I misplaced my card a few months ago and didn't want to cop the fee for a replacement, now my new shiny green card is on its way :) appreciated

  • Can anyone confirm its still free to order

Received the card in NSW today. It is from VIC. I ordered it soon after seeing this deal.
