I have sold about 2-3 hundred hp's in my time and the biggest complaint I ever received hands down about them was heat, some even hot so hot they warped. Don't get me wrong they are NOT bad laptops just some (not all) have heat issues.

BUT great price considering the specs.

I looked at two on the weekend that ran perfectly until a windows 7 update. What I found surprised me was that the default power saving settings after the update had changed to Windows preferred settings and this actually disabled the fans inside the notebook. If you changed the settings in power management to "HP preferred" instantly the system would start cooling itself under conditions that required additional cooling.

With out this option selected I could see how the machine would melt into the desk and die due to heat within days. I expect a lot average users would not notice that no fans are running.

HP/MS need to really talk to each other about what updates can do to a machine.

FYI this update did the same problem on two different model HPs so Id expect a lot of people would have this problem, something to watch ifyou get this machine or if you already have a HP

  • My mate also said that his fan was going at over-drive and stoped his lappy many a times b4 he decided to take it apart and clean all the dust out, i think it solved his problem :) might work for some

    • Yep, dusty as always. I had a hp pavilion for 7 yrs ( dust it inside couple time), i do the same thing with my Compaq now (at least every 3-4 months).
Use SpeedFan for tempt control, it's also depend of the design + programs you run as well. My compaq runs Chrome ( 6 tabs), a game, itune and the tempt is between 69○C-82○C and that is "normal" for it.

  • Thought I would share my experiences with this laptop. Bought it for $899 last year. Use it for general browsing and gaming. Since someone asked about LOL, I play League of Legends on it all the time, which it handles fine, though I'm usually one of the last in the game, there is no stuttering what so ever. I also have no troubles handling source games. MW2 runes fine on medium and I haven't tried it on anything higher then that. I always run it on a cooler, though it still gets a little warm in MW2, I haven't had it overheat yet, something I have experienced with past laptops.

Will say I find the screen I find to be average and I have definitely had better with past laptops. It's not an issue of resolution I just find the colors are really washed out, but overall I have been happy with it for the price I paid, so for just over $600 it's a bargain.

    • I have a similar laptop (slightly lower cpu) and it runs Dota 2 fine on max, but the screen res really lets it down.

  • My only dissapointment is the hard drive spins at 5400rpm as opposed to 7800rpm. Not that this has posed an issue. This is a comment i found online , what does this exactly mean?

apart from this and the screen resolution i found that this laptop is a sure thing to buy once i check it out physically tomorrow.

    Rotational speed
    [rpm] Average
    latency [ms]
    15,000 2
    10,000 3
    7,200 4.16
    5,400 5.55
    4,800 6.25

Is this much to be worried about o.O

you mean 7200rpm hahaha I'm just being a jerk

      • haha nope i meant 7800 as it was a comment taken directly from a website and not my own words :P so jerk back at ya :D

    • It means the hard drive is slower than a normal desktop HDD. IMO this isn't that big of an issue (basically just longer boot times and level load times for gaming) and is very typical of laptops at this price.

  • very good price! bought this back in august last year for $850 @ DSE

    good specs

  • I'm just wondering what the battery life on these things are.

    • You could expect them to last from 1 year to 3 years

      • +4

Mine only last 2 hours, so 1 to 3 years is incredible !! :-)

        • I see I should have been more specific…
Anyway, thanks for both answers! :)

  • I had this laptop 2 years ago and the first problem I've encounter is the hinge that holds the monitor suddenly breaks during the first two months of using. I return it to hp and they fix it with no problem. After that it's the heat. It overheat too much then it shutsdown. Called hp again and they fix it. In that first year I returned it 4 times due to hinge and heat issues. Two thumbs up for hp service but for the laptop I end up buying another one but its a Mac.

I have this laptop. Got it for $600 over 6 months ago. GREAT laptop and awesoem gaming performance.

Laptop auto-switches between graphics cards so batt life can be extended into the 4 hours at a pinch.

I have it and it's fantastic, and for all those talking down the spcs, I replaced the CD tray with an SSD and use an external monitor for the most part, and have never had a heat issue. Very good value for the performance.

  • So my endeavours this morning -

    • Eastland - no stock. mentioned they have a lot of 6012's if anyone wants them, but they're on the website too for $630ish. (i5, 6570 graphics)
    • Knox - no stock.
    • Dandenong - 3 tries, no answer. You're welcome to try again :P

Found it kinda funny that both Eastland and Knox had to go and physically walk to the back room to check, their computers were a bit lame.

Also, the guy at Eastland checked the 'warehouse' for me to see if he could order one specifically, and said that this laptop wasn't actually in their system. Not sure what's going on there… maybe it's on clearance?

  • Yeah I've been told its a Clearance so they can't send it to another stock as I've found a store with stock 2hrs away.

    Thanks for the post.

My auntie was looking for a laptop for her kids and the budget was $700 and this was under it!
She picked one up at the Highpoint store for the price stated online.

  • dang, bought this exact computer end of last year for 700 with slightly smaller HDD, thought that was amazing deal. Really fantastic deal here

  • I called up this morning, and was told that "there is none left in NSW".

  • no stock in myer - rundle mall, adelaide store..

how do i get my hands on one of these?

    • If someone can post their receipt.. it could help me with trying to get a price match :)

  • Just to confirm almost all victoria myer's are out of stock.. Just bought the last brand new one at Chadstone..

  • There is one left that i know of. In Canberra they were all sold out. THe guy checkd the warehouse and there was none, he then checked the rest of Australia and said there is one in Brisbane city store and that you could ask to do a phone order paying by card if anyone is interested- personally i like to see the product physically in most cases so im not interested.

  • hmmm where can I get one of these babies?

  • I paid $1000 for it back in July last year. Good price for a good laptop. Only issue is two of the direction keyboard buttons make a slight odd click sound as if not seated well.
Wish it had lit keyboard though.

  • There doesn't seem to be any stock left in Perth. Myer Garden City had a few of the DV6-4023TX's for $612 - similar specs to the 6024 (albeit slightly weaker graphics card), so this might be suitable alternative for some.

I rang around today and no store in Sydney has any stock left. However, Blacktown said they have one DV7-6107TX and can offer me the clearance price of $696 which I very happy to accept. I am not sure this is a manager special or what but if anyone want a copy of receipt, let me know I can upload it.

    • +1

Can u plz upload the receipt mate? Thanks

      • +1

Will do tomorrow morning at work

        • +1

Cool, thanks man…keen to get that laptop! If there is stock around lol!

    • a quick google shows the differences between the DV7-6107TX and the DV6-4024TX as:

      17.3" vs 15.6"
      1600x900 vs 1366x768
      8GB vs 4GB RAM
      BluRay Player vs DVD RW
      HD6770M 2GB vs HD6770M 1GB
      3KG vs 2.5KG

Not bad for an additional $69.50!

Please find a copy of receipt here: http://upload.ozbargain.com/2012/04/11/8179_dv7_myer.pdf

      Good luck :)

      • is that a display model?

        • The one I got is a display-ish item. The sale person told me that it just been put on the shelf. The packaging and the laptop is in mint condition. Most of the pre-load software has not run the 1st time yet. He also offer to get me a new unit from QLD "warehouse" for an extra $20 delivery if I don't want this unit.

    Hey Guys,
I work at a Myer store in Sydney and ever since the 10th of April I have been receiving heaps of calls about this laptop at work and I couldn't figure out why (it kinda freaked me out). Now that I've found this, it answers my question :P

    Just to clarify:
This is a clearance model. NO STORE IN NSW OR VICTORIA HAS ANY STOCK. Other states are most likely also all out, but I didn't check. Nor will we be getting any more as all the warehouses are also out of stock.

I've still been getting calls about it today, so hopefully the calls will stop soon :) Just goes to show how effective this site is.

    • Thanks for the info, its good you came on here to let people who where they stand.

    • Sorry mate im not really though ;)

No HP lappy for me. Never ever buying another HP. Screen of Death problem with my DV6 lingers. HP in U.S. repaired or replaced lappies with this problem whereas HP Aust wanted to charge me $600 to replace motherboard!
